Questions/Discussion
Key points regarding ESRI’s CAD support
ArcGIS CAD data support is core technology‘Out of the box’
Does NOT require an extension
CAD data can be directly read by ArcGISDoes NOT require any conversion
Behavior similar to other feature datasets and classes
Available at all license levels
Supported file formats and versions:AutoCAD DWG/DXF: Release 12 ‐ 2008
MicroStation DGN: 5.x – V8
CAD data model in ArcGIS
Geometry Attributes
Coordinate System/Projection
CAD data is comprised of:
World File
CAD entity geometry is represented as GIS feature geometry
CAD data can be reprojected to overlay with other GIS layers
CAD drawings can be transformed from local coordinates to real-world location
CAD properties and database links are stored in attribute tables

A CAD dataset contains feature classes and a CAD drawing dataset:
text, tags, and attribute definitions
polygons and is useful for 3D representation
drawing dataset represents the entire CAD file as a single layerpoints, blocks, and cells
lines, polylines, and arcs
closed areas such as polygons, ellipses, and circles
Projection files define a coordinate system for a CAD dataset. They are recommended but not required.
Coordinate Systems and Projections
Coordinate SystemsCAD drawings may not initially have one defined
Not required ‐ but recommended
Select, create or import from other dataset
Projection filesStores coordinate system info
Created in ArcCatalog
Can be copied and reused for other CAD files
Georeferencing (Transformations)
Two‐point Similarity transformation method (Georeferencing toolbar)
Scale, Rotate, and Translate
Aspect ratio always maintained
Cannot skew or ‘rubber sheet’ CAD drawing
Transformation managed by World FilesWorld file must use CAD file name prefix
Must also reside in same folder
Not required for spatially accurate CAD drawings
Not all CAD drawings need to be transformed in ArcGIS

Mapping Specification for DWG (MSD)
What MSD is…Is a specification developed by ESRI for coding information in DWGs
Used by ArcGIS 9.3 +
AutoCAD data structuresCoordinate System Defined
Feature Layer Filter Criteria
Attribution Schema
Attributed Entities
What MSD is NOT…Data Standard
New File Format
Software Dependent
Custom Objects
ArcGIS for AutoCAD + MSDProvides ability for users to
Read ArcGIS data in CAD systems
Organize and attribute CAD drawings for use in ArcGIS
Solves the question ‘How do I export my feature attributes to a CAD drawing?’
Available in the next ArcGIS for AutoCAD release (Q4 2008)

MSD Feature Class Tools
1. New feature class name and type
2. Specify CAD properties
3. Use property selectors
4. Define schema and default values
