I n 1947, Dutch importer Ben Pon spotted workers

at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg factory using a stripped-

down Beetle to move parts around. Inspired, he

sketched the platform for a versatile commercial

vehicle that could be adapted to a multitude of uses.

From this sketch, the Transporter was born, and the

van world has never looked back.

Brilliant then, even better nowSince 1950, millions of Transporters have been built

and have proved to be reliable workhorses for delivery

drivers and tradesmen all over the world. There’s more

to owning a Volkswagen than just work, though –

Volkswagen vans have always stood out from the pack,

which has helped them build a loyal following, from the

original ‘Splittie’ to today’s sleek, modern models.


The Crafter is the van to have for seriously

big tasks. It’s available as a van, a chassis cab that you can customise

in lots of ways or a window van, and has

a payload of up to three tonnes.

The Amarok joined the range in 2011.

More loading optionsIf you want even greater flexibility for accessing

your cargo, you can order an additional sliding

side door. This means that you’ll be able to access

the contents of your van from either side, so you

can park on any side of the street for easy loading

and unloading.

You can also opt to change the twin rear doors

for a tailgate that comes with a heated rear window

and wash-wipe system, or rear wing doors with

opaque glazing. This prevents people seeing the

contents of your van, which adds another useful

level of security.

For a van that’s less than 4.5m in length, there’s an

awful lot you can cram into the back of a Caddy.

With a host of loading options and accessories

available to make it even more versatile, you can also

carefully tailor the Caddy to suit your needs.

Easy to load, plenty of roomThe Caddy is definitely the van about town, thanks to

a generous payload and load volume that you’d simply

never expect in a van this compact. You can fit up to

3.2m3 of cargo in the back and loads up to 1.78m long,

and it’s all easy to secure, thanks to six load-lashing

rings. A floor height of just 570mm makes getting things

in or out really easy, too, while a full-height bulkhead

keeps you safe from loose items. With a sliding-side-door

aperture that’s 70cm wide and asymmetric rear doors,

great access to your load is assured, too.

If you need something a bit bigger than a Caddy, the

Caddy Maxi offers all of the Caddy’s practical benefits

– same terrific low load floor and lots of load-lashing

rings – but with even more space and better access.

Compared with the standard Caddy, the Caddy Maxi

offers another cubic metre of load space (bringing it up to

4.2m3) and a load length of 2.25m – that’s almost half

a metre longer than the Caddy. It also offers a sliding door

on each side as standard, letting you access your load

from each side. You can opt for a tailgate instead of the

twin asymmetric rear doors if you wish, too.

Just like the Caddy, and for even more loading options,

you can make full use of the streamlined roof-rail

channels by specifying a set of Volkswagen load bars.

These can carry up to 100kg and increase the variety

of things you can carry in your Caddy Maxi panel van.

Cargo + crew = kombiNeed a small van that can shift workmates and the kit you need to do the job? Enter the Caddy Maxi kombi – a truly flexible compact van

Sometimes it’s not enough to carry goods – sometimes

you have to take workmates to jobs, too. Enter the

Caddy Maxi kombi – a versatile van that can do both

with ease. You can load it to suit your changing needs – with

the rear seats in place, you can seat five people and still

have enough room for 1.6m3 of cargo.

Fold the rear seats and you increase the load space to

3.9m3, or remove them to give you 4.1m3 – that’s just a

fraction smaller than the regular Caddy Maxi panel van.

It comes with twin, glazed side doors and asymmetric rear

doors for superb access.

Why torque matters Torque is often more important than power when it comes to an engine’s performance. If you carry heavy cargo often, pick an engine with lots of torque. It will move a heavy load from a standing start better than one with less torque, and keep it moving more easily. A torquey engine may even use less fuel, because you won’t need to rev it as much to get the best out of it.

Top tips to help you save fuel Cutting fuel use isn’t just about engine technology – it’s also about being clever. Follow our four tips to make your van as economical as possible.

Check your tyresUp to 20% of a vehicle’s fuel consumption is used in overcoming the tyres’ rolling resistance. It’s even more if your tyres are underinfl ated, so check them regularly.

Use your van’s gearshift indicator

A gearshift indicator is fi tted to all Caddys. It helps you change gear at the most

effi cient times, which cuts fuel use and lowers emissions.

Driver training Driver training can teach you to drive more safely and more economically. Ask the Freight Transport Association (www.fta.co.uk) for details on a course to suit you.

Add a sat-nav A sat-nav system can plot

Start/stop Start/stop allows you

to save fuel at traffi c lights. When you stop, put your van in neutral, release the clutch and the engine automatically switches off , saving fuel and reducing emissions. When you’re ready to go, depress the clutch and the engine starts up again.

Energy recuperationWhen braking, energy during deceleration is wasted. Our energy recuperation system uses some of that momentum to turn the alternator and

charge the battery. If the battery is well-charged,

the engine has to do less work turning the alternator to keep it topped up. This cuts

fuel use and emissions.

Cruise controlBy keeping your van at a constant speed, cruise control saves fuel that would normally be wasted when your speed fl uctuates. It’s especially useful for driving over long stretches, because it stops your speed creeping up unintentionally and reduces the driver’s physical workload.

Hill Hold AssistHill Hold Assist helps you make a smooth, effi cient getaway, every time. On steep inclines, the system holds the brakes at the optimum levelto prevent you rolling back. This reduces the need for you to rev the engine unnecessarily.

life easy. Asymmetric rear doors allow you to handle

loads of varying sizes, while a wide, sliding side door

provides access from the kerbside. Six load-lashing

points help keep everything secure.

Other thoughtful details include a rubber floor lining,

and a hardboard roof and half-height side panels to

protect the interior from knocks. A heated rear window

with wash-wipe ensures a clear view behind and a

full-height bulkhead keeps you safe if your load shifts.

Safety fi rstCaddys come with an outstanding standard safety

specification that includes Volkswagen’s Electronic

Stabilisation Programme (ESP). It uses the Caddy’s

safety systems – Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic

workmates cool, so choose one of our manual or automatic

air-conditioning systems. We can also provide you with an

auxiliary heater for the rear passenger area (Caddy Maxi

kombi models) – ideal for early-morning winter starts.
