yorkshirecadreschool2011 75 years ago workers in Spain rose up against an
attempted coup by Franco and other army generals. They
took over three fifths of Spain including the working class
stronghold of Catalonia and from there organised columns
to liberate the rest of Spain from the fascists. In their wake
they left villages where the peasants took over the land
and factories which the workers now controlled.
Yet this powerful movement was defeated, inaugurating an
almost 4 decade long dictatorship. We will discuss why
this was the case and what lessons can be learned from
those event for today, where in Spain and other countries
around the world youth and workers are fighting back
against capitalist austerity.
The cadre school will take place over two days at theCosmopolitan Hotel, Leeds, with an evening social on the
Saturday night. Overnight accomodation can be provided if
requested.
