solWith energy sources becoming scarce, It is no wonder that man is turning to our most bountiful source... the Sun.
mccord blackwell - DSID 125
San Jose’s Green Vision Clean Energy Showcase provided an opportunity to develop a public structure that utilizes the power of the sun.

LocationLocation is key for a solar structures. I investigated potential sites for the ideal solar exposure and foot traffic.

LocationPaseo de San AntonioThe Paseo de San Antonio Provides an idea location for my structure. Major destinations near by provide ample foot traffic. Not to mention the south facing sky is not prohibited by many tall buildings.

InspirationLooking to Italian espresso bars and American diners for functional inspiration were key in my choice of concept.

Inspirationconcrete structures are an inviting cool place that are idea for public areas. I really wanted to stick with that feel.

Initial ConceptsMy initial concepts were to ways to provide the user with both power and shade. A sesense of privacy in a public location and a gathering location. these are some sketches that show my thought process for the desired concepts.

ConceptSketches developed a concept that provided people with a meeting place with added elements of solar power.

ConceptI went right into mock ups in order to develop more understanding of my concept and form.

Materials I wanted to use an innovative material for the majority of my structure. I chose LiTraCon’s translucent concrete to serve that purpose.

Materials
Lighting was necessary for my
structure to provide interest in
the night. Color Kinetics is an
American based company that
have been used in many public

In order to minimise the need for excessive structure needed for the solar array I chose to use TFPVs (Thin Film Photo Voltaic) produced by High Flex Solar.

Cafe SolCafe Sol developed into a large structure that provides its users with a place to convene, converse and recharge personal devices as well as themselves.
mccord blackwell - DSID 125
Lighting is provided from the interior of the base as well as the uprights.
A High counter level allows for people to lean or sit on the surface if a shorter duration is desired.

A simple sub structure provides rigidity for the flexible solar array.
The table top houses the outlets for charging.
The Steel I beam and concrete uprights house the wiring as well as tprovide the majority of the structure
The concrete base is the foot of the unit, housing the batteries and major electronic components.

My intentions are to have the majority
of assembly done in factory. In doing so
on sight construction will be reduced to
a minimum for time and cost reasons.

The power access is via the ridge in the middle of the table top. Sealed covers protect the sockets from the elements.
The uprights are a key support in the structure and have a unique cross section in order to conceal the components
An access panel in the lover section of the uprights allows for easy access to the components in a discrete manor.
