CAFOD was born when volunteer members of the National Board of Catholic Women organised the first Family Fast Day on Friday, March 11, 1960. Two years later, CAFOD was officially registered. Since then they continued to grow, alleviating poverty and working for global justice around the world.

Thirst For Change is the new campaign that CAFOD are running right now The Zambian government cannot afford to continually pump water to Esther’s village. So when the tap stops flowing, she has to draw dirty water from the river – which Esther knows could make her family sick. Her children have had dysentery and Ricy, her husband, nearly died from cholera. Cafod also works with fairtrade.

884 million people do not have access to clean water. the world demanding clean water and safe sanitation for all. Together, we can turn the tide on water poverty. Three nights a week, Esther lies awake, listening for the splash of water on concrete. This is her cue to run from her bed and get in line. She won’t be alone. Esther will queue for hours – in the moonlight – to collect water before the village tap runs dry. If you help thirst for change many lives.

With your parish, with your friends, at work, as a family, or as an individual - however you choose to raise money, you can have fun supporting our work - and we have loads of fantastic schemes in place to get you started.

Any social occasion such as a coffee morning or a book club meeting makes a great fundraiser. But during Lent you could think about getting sponsored to give up your treats, or give up your time to train for a sponsored swim or a fun run.
