Neighbourhood House Week

Cairnlea Community Hub celebrated Neighbourhood House Week by sharing important health information with nearly thirty members of the community. Speakers from Kidney Health Australia and Breast Screen Victoria answered questions put forward by the audience on general health and wellbeing. The speakers also emphasised the importance of listening to the body and taking note of symptoms associated with diseases such as Diabetes, kidney malfunction and high blood pressure. ‘Regular exercise is the mantra to good health’ was the message conveyed to all. Important information was also imparted on the importance of Breast Screening to avoid Breast Cancer. There was also a discussion on symptoms that might point towards a growth and guidance on subsequent steps to be taken. The seminar ended with the audience giving a strong positive feedback of having learnt important health information. The talks were followed by a light, healthy and delicious lunch.

Join our new Social Groups The Hub will start up two new social groups run by volunteers this term. We welcome people to come along and join in, there is no charge to attend. The programs are the Multicultural Women’s Coffee Group with Wafa & Joyce and the Vietnamese Mums

Social Group with Kha (see page 3).

Meet our latest volunteer

Thelma (pictured below), has recently commenced helping out in our office.

Here’s what Thelma has to say;

“I am happy to be working as a

volunteer at Cairnlea Community Hub. I bring with

me several years of experience of working as an Executive Assistant. I believe I have a strong sense of dedication and loyalty,

a positive attitude and a good sense of humour that helps me to work well, both as a member

of a team and as an individual. Personal setbacks such as becoming a widow, and

raising my son on my own,

my battle with breast cancer have not dampened

my positive attitude to life and my eagerness to make life worth living. My faith

and trust in God and moral support from family and

friends have helped me to survive adverse circumstances.

I enjoy working for the community, spending

time with family and friends, and walking my dog. I also enjoy cooking, gardening, dancing

and watching movies. I look forward to continue being a volunteer at Cairnlea Community.”
