Award Winners

Congratulations to the artists who won Awards or were Highly Commended for their artwork! The judge, Ron McBurnie has kindly offered his explanations for choosing the award winners.

Lone White

‘Seashell’ “Beautiful construction of thrown form with each pleated section added by hand. Each section has minute variations from the rest giving the form subtle differences but a lovely overall shape. The green glaze shimmers as you walk around the sculpture.”

2. Bell Potter Securities Award: $2,000 Acquisitive. Any subject, representational oil painting. W: Julia Golzar

‘Campfire of Surprise’ HC: Lyn Greenaway

‘Memories of Weekends, in Squatters Shacks at Boat Harbour, Kurnell’

3. The Ron & Marion Ireland Award:

$2,000 Acquisitive. Any subject, representational watercolour painting. W: Anne Toppin

‘Nature and the Hand of Man’

HC: Jean Giarola ‘Spring Gathering’

“Beautiful contrast between the evenness of the stones and the curves of the orange vines and white flowers. Both an awkward and fascinating composition.”

4 The Cairns Post Award: $2,000, Acquisitive. Abstract painting, any medium. W: Ingrid Douglas ‘Reflections on Port’ HC: Tanya Ashworth ‘Ruffled’ HC: Jessica Shipard ‘Imagine’ “Interesting use of flat scumbled and painted brushstrokes over a warm ground. This is overlaid with fine calligraphic lines which relate to the reflected parts of buildings and boats.”

5. The Lou Piccone Family

Award: $2,000, Acquisitive. Traditional painting depicting a historic landmark of Far North Queensland, any medium. W: Louise Derry

‘Endeavour River Haze, Cooktown’

“Rich colour & surface developed using traditional pastel techniques to create a vast panorama of beauty at twilight. The ‘almost’ silhouetted foreground reminds me of many Flemish drawings of the 17th century.”

‘Pelicans Rising’ HC: Laurine Field

‘Memory of the Jade Plant from the Land of Fire & Cold’

‘Mangroves – Hinchinbrook – The Web of Life’

HC: Ena Carter-Ward ‘Tulip Ginger’

HC: Dayle Jordon ‘Jade Vine’

“Strong drawing skills are evident in this work which accentuates the effect of climate, seasons and tides on wood and rocks. Appealing textural relationships created between marks used to render the stones to those of the plant forms. A subtle use of the warm and cool shadowed areas.”

9. The Cairns Art Society Award: $1,000, Non-acquisitive. Any subject, miniature work, any medium. W: Sacha Leggatt

‘Fern’ HC: Marion Clarkson

‘The Blue Vase’ “Natural, delicately painted rainforest. The fine line of light contrasts beautifully against the greens and blue green of the other areas. A tiny jewel of a painting, of a world too small for us to enter.”

‘Gerbra Beauties Basking in Kitchen Down Lights’

North” Exhibition

24 Oct – 15 Nov 2008

Tanks Arts Centre

Tanks Arts Centre 46 Collins Avenue Edge Hill Qld 4870

Deputy Mayor, Cr. Margaret Cochrane officially opened CAS’s 4th ‘Artists of the North’ Exhibition on Friday 24 October to a crowd in excess of 300. The exhibition is an eclectic display of 240 works featuring all facets of art, including paintings, digital art, ceramics, photography, mosaics, leadlight, sculptures, textiles, and timber.

In our endeavour to showcase the many talented artists of FNQ, 150 artists are representing CAS, Atherton Art Society, Cairns Potters Club, Cairns Photographic Society, Cairns & FNQ Spinners, Weavers and Fibrecrafters, Innisfail Art Society, KickArts, Kuranda Arts Co-operative, Mareeba Art Society, Mission Beach Artists, Ravenshoe Art Society, The Woodworkers Guild, UMI Artists and the Visual Arts Assn of FNQ.

President Lowen Hardy thanks Cr. Margaret Cochrane and presents her with a

bouquet of flowers

Cairns String Orchestra

The evening began with members of the Cairns String Orchestra masterly showing off their skill with a bow. As always, the audience very much appreciated their performance and the ambience of the Tanks was greatly enhanced with the strains of their music resonating throughout the night. Under the direction of Matthew Coxon, they gave a memorable recital.

Gaye Nichols was presented with a voucher for $300, sponsored by CAS and Cairns Craft Centre, for winning the Unpacker’s Prize. Her oil on canvas work titled “Red Earth Series 3” was chosen for its excellent use of light.

Lowen presents Gaye Nichols with her prize while Exhibition Co-ordinator Ron

Clark holds her winning work aloft

Joan Maccarone & Brenda Mellick deserve a clap for, once again, selling raffle tickets on the night. * Don’t forget to buy your tickets in the two paintings that have been kindly donated by Michael Ferris and Robin Johnston, valued at over $1000.

On entering Tank 4, you’ll be amazed at the vibrant display of works. Thanks to Tanks Arts Centre’s Acting Curator Pauline Langley, and CAS members Ron Clark and Carmen Searle for curating the exhibition. They did a great job with the hanging, ably

assisted by Robin Johnston, Jim Logan, Di Sant, Maurice Evans, Gen Anderson and Les Ferguson.

“A spectacular display of art”

Artist in residence, Sheran Barton will be demonstrating her work each Friday. Mike Ferris will be holding workshops 8-9 Nov. on sketching buildings in black and white. Ph. 4055 2544 to book your place, all materials supplied. The Spinners & Weavers will also be doing a spinning and felting demo on Friday 7 Nov. 10am-2pm.

Thanks also to Carol Laing for processing all the entries & Geoff Brazier for the Bar. Many thanks must go to Exhibition Co-ordinator Ron Clark for organising the event.

As we go to print, so far 24 works have been sold and we’ve still got 2 weeks to go! * If you can help on the roster, please contact

Photographing Artwork

You may be a superb artist but if you cannot convey this through your digital images, you have little hope of selling, nor having it selected for exhibition work. That means no other elements of your room/workshop - we are not interested in how pretty your cat and flowers are on the table! NO flash glares, out of focus images, poor colours or over saturated unreal colours. These all subtract from your work. You have to produce an honest replication of your work.

Let us discover how to produce professional looking photographs. Here are just some tips that may help you, it is not rocket science and we are all capable of achieving this. As we are in this digital age, I will only make reference to this.

Gather up all the equipment, have camera (with charged batteries), tripod, your artworks and relax. Find a clear area against a neutral background.

Ensure you are using the largest format your camera can take, i.e. the highest jpeg or select raw format depending on your camera. Understanding your camera always helps – yes, do read the manual, you will be surprised what you can learn.

In the perfect world a decent SLR is really the go and use a lens >50mm to prevent barrel-like distortion or a fish eye effect. A 200-300mm lens is even better, but you have to step back further and zoom in. This flattens out the image far better. But as most of you have a point and shoot camera, you too can manage this successfully.

The camera should be lined up square-on with your artwork @ 90 degrees pointing directly at the centre of your artwork to ensure a straight-on focal plane, rather than looking down or up at a painting. Otherwise, a rectangular piece of artwork will come out looking like a trapezoid. The easiest way is to hang your work on a wall rather than on an easel.

Use your camera at a distance from your work so that the artwork fills

most of the view-finder. This will eliminate a lot of unnecessary cropping later.

Try to photograph your paintings unframed, unless the frame is truly integral. Personally, I only photograph unframed work or remove the frame on my computer later when I crop the image. Frames are very distracting when viewing on the computer and print out. After all, you are trying to sell your painting, not the beautiful frame.

I cannot stress enough to use a tripod for your camera. If this is not possible, find a firm surface to place your camera - this allows you to use a longer exposure (highter F-stop + slower shutter speed) which allows more light to fall on the sensor of your camera. This will ensure your painting will be well exposed and the photograph is super sharp. Check the manual for the minimum focal distance.

Use natural sunlight or slightly overcast days. I prefer to photograph on my verandah with an overhang - still plenty of light, but no direct sunlight bouncing off the canvas surface. Mid morning is always good for this. Digital cameras like to photograph in this environment. This will produce the most accurate colours of your work. Remember NO FLASH.

If you understand the white balance setting on your camera, then experiment with this. Include a grayscale strip if you have one and this will assist you when adjusting your brightness and contrast levels. Remember to have your computer monitor calibrated as well. You will be surprised when doing so - your prints ought to be pretty close to what you see on your screen.

You may wish to try and use diffused natural sunlight - in a room with neutral background and large bright windows on a sunny day is excellent. Avoid having sunlight directly on your work, preventing blown out colours completely.

Remember, do not use a flash. Even acrylic and oil paintings will have reflection, especially once they

are sealed. You may wish to try a polarizing filter, especially for photographing artworks behind glass. Here it is very important to watch out for reflections.

Naturally, it would have been optimum to have photographed your work prior to going behind glass, but you may be quite successful by placing your work on a floor and standing above or on a small ladder. (Also, when you clean the glass with glass cleaner, ensure that this is glass and not plexiglass, which is damaged easily.)

Unless you have a proper photographic studio, I will not go into setting up correct lighting for optimum results. If your artwork is small enough you may wish to try using your scanner. This can sometimes produce a better quality than a photograph.

If you have a camera with manual exposure controls, take shots with slightly under and slightly over exposed settings with your correct exposure. This will give you a variety of results to choose from and if computer savy you can then blend these exposures to ensure you have a true replica of your work.

Image Resolution & Resizing: Always check what the requirements are for sending photos by email. Image Resolution is extremely important. For printing, ensure the largest format and around 200 – 300dpi. For websites and emails, 72 dpi is adequate. This is the most a computer screen can display and keeps the file size down. Any less and you risk losing too much quality eg distorted and fuzzy. If showing your work on computer only and not for print out larger than 3 x 5” – a resolution approx 800 x 800pixels @ 72-150dpi will display your work perfectly and this will keep your file size down.

Happy snapping.

Cheers, Ingrid

Mr. Pedantic’s Pertinent Painty Points.

Point No.10 Picky Picky Aaaah the endless question of what to paint. It’s a toughy isn’t it. Someones head. A Pony. Flowers. A landscape in the hills. A swirly purple thing with pointy bits in it. Lets talk about choice of subject. For anyone who is serious about their painting as “Art”, as opposed to it being in the same category as basket weaving or macramé, the process of deciding what to paint is a regular kafuffle. So, lets look at it from a couple of perspectives or three. First up is “Doability” With painting there’s no such thing as “over ambitious”. A good complex subject that looks impossible to paint will always give you more than one within your comfort zone. After all, every painting is only a mosaic of coloured spots next to each other. Its just a matter of identifying the colours of the spots. And besides, this is ART. This is the time when you get to be the boss and direct traffic any way you want. So, if your Pandanus Palm has 5 fronds, but you paint it with three, so be it. The fact that they are shaped like elephants in the colour of strawberries is your business. Its YOUR painting. It is what it is and will be what it will be. Secondly, “Likeability”. Ask yourself “when this is finished, is it something Id hang on my wall? If you don’t like it…. Why are you considering painting it? If your next thought was “maybe someone will buy it” Well,…if you wouldn’t buy it , why would they? Take the time to find subjects that grab you. Imagine them in your prime spot over the mantelpiece. (or the telly). If the answer is “yuk” then move on. And Thirdly, “Originality”. The curly one. In order of priority of what’s most important about art, the top of the list will be Originality. Take the time. Look at your idea from many perspectives. This vase of flowers in front of me, what if I paint it from above? How about looking up at it from a childs perspective? Or ridiculously

close up? Or from within the bunch looking out? Bend the rules. Be new. Don’t be predictable and dull. After originality comes colour, followed closely by style and somewhere way down the list is “drawing skills”. Have a browse through an Art magazine and look for the Archibald Prize for “Rooly good drawing Skilz”. No sirree, nope I can’t seem to find it. No gold stars for drawing. But big ups for originality. You are original. So should be your Art. Go paint something. ☺ G r e g D w y e r 0 8.

Michelle Dousset Ink'd by Mickey Ink Michelle Dousset (Mickey Ink) has lived in Cairns for the past 5 years and in tropical North Queensland for most of her life. Graduating from James Cook University in 2003 as a Graphic Designer with a Bachelor in Communication Design majoring in Illustration, she now runs her own business combining these skills for commercial applications. Illustration is her specialty with very fine, detailed, and photo realistic work her forte. Preference is for pencil and pen & ink, whilst still enjoying painting, especially using gouache. The subject matter varies, but mostly natural, scientific and botanical type illustrations are favoured. Michelle is inspired by her travels overseas - of different cultures and lands, but is captivated by Australia; it’s people, humour, and way of life; flora and fauna; and fantastically unique scenery and locations.
