JULY 2018 – THE HEAT IS ON! Denver hit 105 degrees in June setting a new record for the last week of the month. There’s no question that it’s hot this summer and that generates

tremendous amount of activity at our great Club. Every facility at LCC is being used by more and more of you and your guests while our staff is working hard every day to ensure your Member experience is best-in-class. As this buzz of activity continues to grow, I want to take this opportunity to encourage all of you pay attention to the rules that have been established over the years simply to make LCC an enjoyable and safe environment for everyone. LCC has always been comprised of Members who take pride in the ability to have a relaxed environment where Members establish life-long friendships and memorable experiences without a pretentious atmosphere dominated by rules. But these rules and the BY-LAWS have been established for a reason and it’s time for us to all be aware so that LCC can continue to function in this relaxed setting.

I ask all of you to read the “letter from the gm” in this newsletter. Our General Manager, Mr. Lance Scheele, provides excellent guidance for all of us to consider in respecting four categories:

• Respect for our golf course

• Respect for our Clubhouse and pool facilities

• Respect for the entire staff of LCC

• Respect for each other

The message is simple but can be extremely impactful in how we grow as a private club and continue to build on existing friendships, establish new friends, and take care of one another when we are in need! I have heard so many stories during my years of Membership of Members who travel together far and near, for golf, fishing, hunting, and general boondoggles that make your stomach hurt from laughing. I’ve also heard of the many funerals attended, hospital visits so Members never felt alone, and every occasion where friends will go the extra mile to be sure things will be okay. That is what makes Lakewood Country Club great and it starts with respect for one another and an appreciation for what we have at our Club. Let’s all go the extra mile to be sure we’re having fun this summer, shall we?

I love Lakewood Country Club and look forward to seeing all of you as we celebrate another birthday for our great country!!

Cheers!

Thomas M. Piercy President [email protected]

letter from the head golf proWe would like to invite all of the Membership to participate in the summer tournament schedule. During July, August, and September, there are many opportunities to

join in some competitive golf. If you have any questions regarding daily play or tournament sign-ups, please call the Golf Pro Shop in advance to check availability.

Sliceroo occurs Thursday, July 12th through Saturday, July 14th with course preparation and a practice round (10:30 a.m. shotgun) scheduled for Wednesday, July 11th. The Golf Pro Shop staff has a limited number of tee times set up for reciprocal play with other golf courses in the area. If you wish to try and play on one of these days, please sign up in the Golf Pro Shop for the lottery drawing, which will be held July 6th. During Sliceroo, the golf course, practice facilities, and Clubhouse dining will be closed except to tournament participants.

We are nearing the quarterfinals of the Scotch Matches. The matches will be posted outside the Golf Pro Shop so you may schedule your time to be part of the gallery. As always, complimentary spectator carts are offered to the Membership provided they are available. Please obtain a cart from one of the outdoor service staff to ensure our playing Members have enough carts.

Our caddie program is in its second month and going very well. I would encourage you to give our caddie program a try. These young men and women can assist you in experiencing the enjoyment of golf. Please make sure to call John Kienast, or the Golf Pro Shop staff at least one day in advance to reserve your caddie.

As we experience a higher volume of play, we would like to bring three important items to your attention. Getting to the Tee on Time- As a courtesy to your fellow Members, players should be on the tee box by their starting time. We have several time-coordinated clocks so you can plan your practice accordingly. Players not attempting to drive the #1 green should tee off first in the group. Also, please clear the #1 green in a timely manner. Pace of Play- It is important to remember that it is the player’s responsibility to play his/her round in the allocated time of four hours or less. The staff is spending many hours monitoring and assisting players with the pace but the players are ultimately responsible for keeping up with the group in front of them. Please make sure you are within one shot of the group in front at all times. Course Care- Please utilize the sand/seed bottles on the carts. Don’t just repair the divot you made, repair any areas on the golf course. You may have to hit the next shot out of that divot if it is not fixed!,

Fridays – July 27th & August 31st 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Please join us this summer at the pool, the last Friday of each summer month, for complimentary live entertainment (pool guest fees will be in effect). Bring your family and friends to these fun filled summer nights at Lakewood Country Club for sunset viewing and live music. All artists will perform the following Fridays this summer from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. We are happy to bring this amazing and talented lineup into such a friendly outdoor setting that offers our Members and their guests the perfect summer escape.

July 27th Featuring- Mike Massé – Classic Rock Covers Mike Massé is an internationally acclaimed acoustic artist, known for his epic performances of classic rock covers. He was schooled from an early age on the essentials of rock: Beatles, Stones, The Who, Clapton. He credits the Beatles with teaching him to sing and play guitar, as he studied their songs carefully in his teenage years.

August 31st Featuring- 25 South Band –

Country Rock, Southern Rock, and Classic Rock 25 South Band has over 100 years of combined playing experience and is a dynamite three piece band focusing on 80s, 90s Country, Country Rock, Southern Rock, and Classic Rock! Audiences easily identify with every song and are quite familiar with the very popular hits the band performs. They are honored to perform for you here at LCC!

Respect: the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines respect as: a feeling of admiring someone or something that is good, valuable, important, etc.: a feeling or understanding that someone

or something is important, serious, etc., and should be treated in an appropriate way.: a particular way of thinking about or looking at something.

I don’t like getting up on a soap box; but I must tell you as Manager of this private country club, I have noticed a lot of disrespect lately from the Membership and their guests.

Realizing that the golf course has been limited in availability over the last eight months, there has been a pent-up demand for the new golf course. The entire facility is under duress with more rounds being played than in the past, the pool is being utilized more than ever before, and the Clubhouse is buzzing in all areas. Booming business was expected, and it brings a smile to my face with so many Members utilizing and enjoying the facilities. It is understood how there may be some frustrating scenarios from time to time due to volume. However, the Membership must take some ownership in the upkeep of the course and facilities, as well as enforcement of the rules at LCC.

Golf CourseBeginning with our recent restoration: Membership agreed to complete work on the course stemming back from the mid 1990s. We have made a significant investment to what many consider to be our primary asset at LCC. Yet, I see every day people disrespecting the new layout we just invested over $1.5 Million of your

money to upgrade. Ball marks (dozens) left on the new greens, divots not filled on tee boxes and in fairways, and carts being driven or parked in areas where there should never be a cart, i.e.: immediately off the green complex, over tee boxes, and in roped off areas of new turf. To the Membership of LCC, I ask you to please respect YOUR golf course; while we have a maintenance team to maintain the golf course, your dues shouldn’t be directed to fix all the items golfers leave behind, more so to be pro-active with maintenance practices and labor efforts to enhance the playability of the course. A few quick moments after each golf shot from each golfer can make an enormous impact on the playing conditions of your golf course.

ClubhouseIf a dreadful day on the golf course, or at work, or home, results in the devastation of the Clubhouse and facilities, we need to take a step back and realize that as a Member of a private country club, the Clubhouse/pool building deserves the same respect as your home. Taking out frustration on the facility and the furnishing causes increased spending to make repairs versus spending on future enhancements. In addition to damage, we are experiencing theft of many locker room & bathroom amenities such as lotions, toothbrushes, and razors that are offered as an amenity to use and enjoy while at the Club – not be taken for use at home. Children are unruly and running around the Clubhouse unsupervised, which is not only a safety concern, but causing frustration from Members trying to enjoy the facilities, not to mention the added expense of repairing broken furnishings and fixtures. LCC has rules pertaining to children while in the Clubhouse/pool building and golf course; please refer to the Board Policies found on the LCC website under Article IV, section 2. Members should take pride in the facility just as you would in your own home.

letter from the gm letter from the gmFellow MembersUnderstanding that from time to time, Members may not see eye to eye with one another. LCC is to be a place of enjoyment, not additional stress or turmoil. Members want to come out and enjoy all the amenities we have to offer. Please treat each other with kindness and respect. As a Management team, we constantly educate our staff to work & live by the “Golden Rule” which is to treat others the way you wish to be treated. I ask that Members treat each other in the same manner. Guests and family are the responsibility of the Member in which they are accompanied. Please take the time to educate guests and family members on the rules of LCC, to ensure a pleasant time is had by all.

StaffThe staff of LCC are trained to perform their various responsibilities in their respective departments. First and foremost, to be attentive to the Membership. That being said, the most challenging responsibility the employees are faced with is making sure the Membership and their guests are following the rules and guidelines for the enjoyment of the ENTIRE Membership. The rules of LCC were formed by the Membership for the Membership’s enjoyment and should be followed by the entire Membership – no

one person is above the rules. The staff is tasked with enforcing these rules daily, and I will not tolerate a Member disrespecting a staff member, when they are enforcing the rules. Should a Member feel that a rule is no longer applicable, don’t take it out on the front-line staff members; please contact myself and I will bring the rule in question up to the appropriate Committee for their consideration. I will provide you with a timely response to your question and explain the decision made by the Committee.

It pains me to have to write a letter on a topic such as this, but I believe it requires immediate attention. LCC is a wonderful place and the Membership is fantastic, that’s what makes LCC so special. Be respectful of the surroundings and each other, and it will become better and more enjoyable for all Members..

It’s a pleasure to serve you as General Manager, please let me know if you have any questions or feedback.

Sincerely;

Lance Scheele General Manager [email protected]

letter from the clubhouse managerThe pool kicked off the summer season with great success. The kitchen staff, wait staff, lifeguard staff, bartenders, and managers have all been working hard in making the Members’

experience pleasant. Hopefully, you have enjoyed the rotating items on the pool menu, along with the standard favorites, as the rotating items will be replaced with new choices starting the second week in July.

A quick thank you to all the Members who have hosted parties at the pool and were patient with our staff and kitchen allowing us to execute your needs to the best that we can (since we are not set up to host large parties out of our kitchen, in addition to the normal pool business). With that being said, for those who are looking to host parties at the pool, please know that we are limited with our space, and the best way to go about doing this is renting one of our three cabanas that offer a more private experience. Keep in mind that the cabanas comfortably hold around 6-8 adults and children, we ask that you do not have more in them as it infringes on the other Members who have rented the other cabanas. A friendly reminder, if you plan on bringing over six guests to accompany you to the pool, please call the Club to let us know.

Our Annual Memorial Day Pool Party was a great way to kick off the 2018 pool season at LCC. We had over 200 Members, guests, and children in attendance. The new location of the buffet, under the awnings against the pool house, was a big hit as far as keeping all the food in one shaded place with the

exception of the grill items. This location also allowed a better flow and seemed to stay more organized. If you weren’t able to attend, we hope to see you at the two other holiday pool parties, Fourth of July and Labor Day. The six couples who attended the Couples’ Summer Barbecue Cooking Demonstration had a great time. The event moved from the pool grill into the Clubhouse kitchen, due to the heat and the items Chef Mat was preparing. They then dined on the private Ballroom patio with the romantic ambiance from our new pillars of fire and the street market lights. At the end of the June, Mr. Reinig, Mr. Piercy, and the other members of the Parkside band kicked off the Summer Concert Series with a BANG (and a violin twist)! For those who attended, we hope you enjoyed an evening of fun and dancing.

We look forward to seeing you around the Club in July. Come celebrate the 4th of July at our annual Fourth of July Pool Party and Barbecue. The pool hours of operation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The party (buffet, entertainment, and games) will be from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be a dalmatian bouncer and 30’ blow up obstacle course, along with pool and pool side games throughout the event. Following this event is LCC’s Sliceroo. As always, we are gearing up and looking forward to our 62nd Annual Member-Guest Event. This is always a wonderful opportunity to showcase our Club and we all take pride in making this one of the greatest Member-Guest Events in the country. Please note - Member Dining will NOT be available during this four day event, however, the pool will be fully operational. We hope you join us at the pool for our Summer Concert Series, the last Friday of the month, July 27th for complimentary live entertainment

featuring- Mike Massé, who is an internationally acclaimed acoustic artist, known for his epic performances of classic rock covers. He was schooled from an early age on the essentials of rock: Beatles, Stones, Who, Clapton. He will perform from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Bring your family and friends to this fun filled summer night at Lakewood Country Club.

As always, my door is open to any comments or concerns. Please feel free to contact me at any time.
