CAL-NEV-HA

Aloha Kiwanians,As many of you know, I am your 2012-2013 Cal-Nev-Ha District Governor. I

will be serving you this year alongside my wife, First Lady Donna Jander.Together with your local club leadership and our amazing team of Lt. Gov-

ernors, we are here to inspire and equip you to stay fixed on our District’s three major goals.

First, we need to build our membership. As the largest District in Kiwanis International, we can do our part if each club ends the year “plus one” in active membership. That’s more than 500 new members providing service to our com-munities with just that one simple task. I believe you get what you focus on and I know if you focus on this one thing, you can do it.

The other thing we are asking our Cal-Nev-Ha District clubs and members to do is to “step up” the reporting of service hours. Did you know that some of our members aren’t reporting all the projects and hours they put into volunteer work in their communities each week?

It’s our goal to conduct and report more than One Million hours of commu-nity service throughout California, Nevada and Hawaii. I suspect we are already doing this. Now, we just need to make it official and report it.

More importantly, Donna and I and the whole District Team are dedicated to helping you get the leadership training and tools you need. Look for more infor-mation coming very soon about opportunities you will have to receive training in Servant Leadership, public speaking and more. These will be tools you can use to teach leadership to others. By building up effective leaders among our members, we can have an even greater impact, not only in California, Nevada and Hawaii, but the entire world for generations to come.

Please take a moment to view the short video by clicking on the link below. Look for the next quarterly video in the coming months. I hope you enjoy this video and will share it with others.

Thank you for allowing us the privilege of serving you this year.

The Key Leader program was developed seven years ago to provide high school youth with a structured classroom experience to learn hands-on what being an effect and responsible leader in their community means. Site Coordinators Natali Galt, Mike Akana, Rich Fuller, and Shannon Martin spearheaded this project at sites throughout the California-Nevada-Hawaii District during 2012. This coming spring will see the addition of a new site for Key Leader in the Santa Barbara area.

The Key Leader Program has already reached 16,400 students at 317 Key Leader events in 39 United States, five Canadian provinces, Malaysia, Brazil, Cayman Islands, El Salvador and Singapore.

The mission statement of Key Leader is to inspire young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership. Its intent is to build on the future. Participants of the program attend an intensive three-day camping retreat in the mountains in a secure facility to learn about community, communications and service.

In October, 62 youth and 30 adults traveled to Camp Cedar Glen nestled in Julian, CA to attend the annual Key Leader program.

For many of the students this was the first time away from home and the first time out of the city. The country provides an excellent setting

for immersion into the concepts of building fellowship and community.

In years past, delegates from China observed the program in order to take back with them the Key Leader concepts and are working to bring this program to China. The program has brought students and adults to the Julian, CA site from as far away as Washington D.C.

Students are provided with exercises that build personal integrity, personal growth, and respect, community building and achieving the pursuit of excellence.

Attendees began each day at 8 a.m. and worked until midnight. The structured program provided opportunities to build personal image, build communities, learn effective

Servant leadershipIt’s not about “me” at Key Leader training.

KeyLeadercommunity and the importance of being a volunteer.

The exercises provided opportunities for problem solving and discussion. The cost of the event was $200. Kiwanis International offers a $25 discount to Key Club members.

Your club is invited to take a look at Key Leader and sponsor a youth to participate in next year’s program. More information is available at KiwanisOne.org or Key-Leader.org. The Key Leader program is open to any youth ages 14 to 17 who demonstrate the basic skills for leadership and who would benefit from such a program.

High school students and adult advisors attend the Key Leader program each October at Camp Cedar Glen in Julian, CA, just north of San Diego.

DIVISIONS 11 AND 31Kiwanis club members in Region 1 (Divisions 11 and 31) are gearing up for the 2013 Kiwanis Sports Meet, set for March 9 at West Hills High School in Santee. Kiwanis members will volunteer as judges for the events, act as buddies to the athletes, set up and take down and act as cheerleaders for the special needs athletes.

DIVISION 13LONG BEACH: The Kiwanis club provided and served the din-ner on Jan. 16 to 40 women and children who are residents of the Long Beach Rescue Mission’s Lydia House, a shelter for homeless, bat-tered and abused women and their children. The meal featured tacos, ta-quitos, refried beans, rice, tortilla chips and salsa, which was provided by El Burrito Grill.

DIVISION 19TORRANCE: The newest member of the Kiwanis Club of Torrance is Chuong Vo. He is the president of the Torrance Police Officers Association and is a former member of the Leuzinger High School Key Club. He was also a Kiwanis scholarship recipient when he was in high school. Past Lt. Gov. Tony Molino inducted Vo on Jan. 29.

DIVISION 23DOWNTOWN SPARKS: The Kiwanis club sponsors an ongoing program for bike repair, safe riding practices and recycling in its bike shop. It is home to ongoing clinics for youth organizations, refurbishing of bikes for at risk youth in our community and bike sales of a limited number of refurbished bikes. These sales support the club’s donation of bikes to youth in the community. The program could not exist without donations of bikes from the community. The club recently moved its bike shop to a larger building.

DIVISION 37POWAY: The Kiwanis club collected near-ly 1,000 old cell phones from the commu-nity by the end of January in an effort to help deployed soldiers. The used phones are turned in to the national organization, “Cell Phones for Soldiers,” which is able to exchange the phones for 120-minute phone calling cards. Joyce Handa of the Kiwanis Club of Poway has coordinated the local effort. So far, the local program has resulted in 73,680 minutes of talk time. The Poway program was recently featured on a San Diego television newscast.

DIVISION 43MONTEREY: The club hosted its annual recognition for the outstanding Naval Post-graduate School’s International Student,Outstanding Civil Defense Language In-stitute’s Civilian and Outstanding Military Language Instructors of the Year. The event was organized by Dr. Christine Campbell, a Kiwanian and the assistant provost for the institute. Each recipient was presented a cash grant designated to his or her favorite local charity.

DIVISION 31LA MESA: The club held its annual November rally race for the All American Soap Box Derby for youth, including Christopher of San Diego, pictured above.

Past Lt. Gov. Hartha Jackson is presented a William A. Dunlap Fellowship by Gov. Gary Jander. Hartha serves in Kiwanis in the San Diego area.

Kiwanis, Circle K and Key Club members from Region 16 gathered Jan. 12 for the region’s annual conference in Sacramento.

Eighty people attended the conference, which featured workshops on “Enhancing the SLP Connection” and “Engagement Marketing” and wrapped up with a Kiwanis One “scavenger hunt.

Region 16 Trustee Bill Hooper hosted the conference at the Dante Club, and CNH Gov.-Elect Rae Whitby Brummer and her daughter Judi Whitby served as moderators.

The conference brings together members of clubs from Divisions 7, 27 and 44 for a time of sharing ideas about number of topical issues.

Those attending discussed topics at their tables and then chose a spokesperson to report on what s discussed.

The conference, which cost $15 a person, included lunch.

The “Engagement Marketing” portion the conference focused on the use of social media, and benefitted from the input of Circle K and Key Club members , Whitby-Brummer said.

WHAT IF YOU COULD SAVE A BABY’S LIFE?With The Eliminate Project, you can. Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one

baby every nine minutes. But three doses of a 60-cent vaccine can protect babies—and

their mothers too. Kiwanis and UNICEF have joined forces to bring this vaccine to 40

countries, eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth by 2015. What can you do now?

Grow your club, because you’ll need strength to take on the challenges of the campaign.

Learn about MNT, and advocate for the cause. Over the next five years, the work you do

to eliminate MNT will change the world. Find resources at www.TheEliminateProject.org.

The California Society of Association Executives chose the Kiwanis Family House as its 2012 “Charity of Choice” at the recent Seasonal Spectacular event and tradeshow held at the Sacramento Convention Center in December.

Nominated by Bethany Getz of Marriott Hotels and Resorts, the Kiwanis Family House was the recipient of a truckload of donations from its current wish list. The items were donated by both exhibitors and attendees throughout the event.

One exhibitor, the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau, was recognized by the executives association for going “above and beyond” in gathering donations for the Family House. The vistors bureau was named the “Charity Rock Star” at the event.

The Kiwanis Family House was built through the efforts of numerous Kiwanis club volunteers from the Sacramento area. It opened on July 23, 1984 to answer a need for temporary housing for the families of pediatric patients at the UC Davis Children’s Hospital in Sacramento.

Prior to Kiwanis’ response, there were no accommodations available at the hospital, and no nearby hotel or motel facilities that were safe and affordable.

When a child was in a

life-threatening condition as a result of cystic fibrosis, cancer, prenatal difficulties, or trauma from an accident, the distraught families who needed to be near their child were forced to sleep in their cars, with no access to bathing, bathrooms,

laundry facilities or a place to gain respite from their overwhelming fears.

Located on property donated by the UCD Medical Center, the Kiwanis Family House offers 32 bedrooms, each with shower and bathroom facilities, four

kitchens with dining areas for self-meal preparation, laundry room, a child’s game room and an outdoor play area. Families have free long distance phone and internet access, free shuttle bus transportation to and from the hospital 24 hours a day.

ccording to the dictionary, a partnership is an arrangement where parties agree to cooperate to advance their mutual interests. Non-profit organizations may partner together to increase the likelihood of each achieving

their mission and to amplify their reach. For instance, the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation partners with the Cal-Nev-Ha District to achieve the mission of Building a Better Future for

our Children, or, more specifically, to achieve the goals of preventing and treating pediatric trauma and training the future leaders of our District.

To address the first goal, the Foundation partners with six hospitals located throughout our District to produce programs to prevent and treat pediatric trauma.

One such program, our Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship, is now providing specialized training to our fourth

Kiwanis doctor. Our Kiwanis doctors as part of their grant agreement with us go out into communities within the District to share their expertise with other emergency room personnel and first responders.

Each year we receive grant applications from our partner hospitals for special trainings, equipment or programs to serve critically ill or injured children.

These programs are currently largely funded by the hard work of our Service Leadership Program (SLP) partners in Key Club, KIWIN’S and Circle K and by your contributions to the Dunlap Fellowship and Champions for Children. Unfortunately, at our current level of fundraising we are only able to satisfy one quarter of the amounts requested by our partner hospitals.

Our second goal is addressed by the funds the Foundation contributes toward trainings for the officers of our Service Leadership Programs (Circle K, Key Club and

KIWIN’S); by scholarships to help SLP members advance their educations; and by scholarships that encourage and enable high school students to attend the numerous and growing Key Leader training camps.

Our mission is not impossible; it’s achievable and necessary to ensure the future for our children is better than their present. We count on Kiwanians to be our closest partners. That’s why First Lady Donna and I urge each of you to consider becoming a Champion for Children.

Please visit our website at cnhfoundation.org or visit us in person at our booth at our upcoming Mid Year Conferences to obtain the enrollment form.

For just $10 per month, you can make an enormous difference in the health and well-being and growth of the children in our three-state District.

Champions for Children:To help our donors become more involved in our projects, we created Champions for Children, an annual sustaining donor program which provides the Foundation with an unrestricted source of revenue. This year, First Lady Donna has adopted this program as a way to encourage others to support her First Lady’s focus. For more information about the Champions for Children initiative, including how to become a Champion and receive a commemorative pin, visit cnhfoundation.org. Donations to Champions for Children are set up as monthly automatic deductions from your credit card or debit card.

Distinguished Service Award (DSA):This Foundation award is presented to a Kiwanian or community member in appreciation for “many hours of service to Kiwanis and the community.” Distinguished Service Awards support our Pediatric Trauma Program, club grants, Service Leadership Programs Scholarships & Leadership Training and our other program services. A Distinguished Service Award is available for a $150 one-time donation and can come from your club’s service account.

Friends of the Foundation 2013:Friends of the Foundation support the Foundation’s Service Leadership Programs (SLP) Scholarship Fund, or may designate their contribution as unrestricted, allowing the Board to allocate the contribution depending on the current need. Yearly gifts of all sizes are accepted. For as little as $100 per year you too can become a Friend of the Foundation and receive a beautiful plaque that can be updated yearly with your continued support.

Kiwanis Professional Center:Support the Kiwanis Professional Center through the purchase of “Building Bonds” and/or “Building Bricks.” Commemorative inscribed bricks are available and are a thoughtful way to memorialize an event, a club or a person. Bricks are available in incriments of $150, $250, $500 or $1,000, depending on the amount of wording inscribed. An original brick is placed at the Kiwanis Professional Center. A keepsake brick is available for an additional fee for you or your honoree.
