Pencil Drawing and Sketching
Drawing is about learning how to translate what you see onto paper. It is a skill that anyone can learn. It just takes the desire to learn and a willingness to put in time to practice. In this eight week class you will learn how to sketch and create realistic drawings of a wide variety of subjects.
Through demonstrations and lots of drawing practice you will learn how to control the size of your drawings, understand perspective, see and quickly measure proportions, simplify complicated subjects and much more. You will also discover how to see light and shadow and then translate that information into your drawings. The subjects that you will be learning how to draw in this class include buildings, people, birds and animals, still life subjects and landscapes.

Introduction to Fly Fishing
This course is designed for beginners to learn fly fishing; no experience is required. Through slides, demos and hands-on exercises participants will learn about fly-fishing equipment and techniques for streams, lakes and ponds. Students will learn basic aquatic entomology, how to “read” water that holds fish, some game fish identification and biology. Basic fly casting techniques will be taught, on grass and at a local farm pond. All equipment (rods, reels, flies, etc.) is provided.

The Cal Poly’s Wine & Viticulture major is quickly becoming one of the nation’s premier college programs dedicated to the growing and making of wines. It is supported by a 14-acre campus vineyard, which is surrounded by the university’s breathtakingly panoramic range lands. This workshop will begin with a tour of our campus winery and an explanation of the wine making process. We will then visit the campus ‘SIP’ (Sustainability in Practice) certified vineyard. After making our way up Stenner Creek to the beautiful historic barn at Serrano Ranch, we will enjoy a BBQ and tasting of Cal Poly wines. Cal Poly’s Beef Center Manager will
explain innovative range management practices used on Cal Poly land.

Celebrate Earth Day with this unique field-to-fork experience! San Luis Obispo
County is receiving international attention as a leading wine growing region. It
is also becoming home to makers of fine spirits. This foray into Paso Robles wine
country will begin at Villicana Winery, producer of award-winning wines and now
of RE:FIND, handcrafted spirits derived from grapes. You will tour the distillery
and learn about the distillation process. Afterwards, you will travel to Windrose
Farm, a highly diversified biodynamic farm that is home to an astonishingly wide
variety of vegetable crops, apples, stone fruit and sheep. Abundant open spaces
provide habitat for other animal, bird and insect life. There, taste the farm fresh
creations of leading local chef, Pandee Pearson.

Cal Poly offers a Master of Science degree and two graduate certificate programs in fire protection engineering (FPE). One graduate certificate is in fire protection engineering science and the other is in fire protection engineering applications. These are the only FPE graduate programs offered on the West Coast. The goal of the FPE program is to prepare graduates to become licensed professionals in fire protection engineering to fill the increasing demand. Classes are offered on campus or online. Parents! Here’s an special opportunity for your young scholar. Kids Learn STEM Summer Camp is five action-packed days of hands-on, brain-on fun for grades 5 to 8!
This year’s theme is: ENERGY! Young scholars will explore the science, technology and engineering of energy through a series of inquiry-based activities. Led by Cal Poly faculty, your child will “Learn By Doing” as we test solar panels, build wind turbines and investigate the energetics of chemical reactions. Participants will work in small teams to develop and solve scientific challenges, explore the Cal Poly Campus and visit real research laboratories! Cal Poly Kids Learn STEM Summer Camp will power innovation and critical thinking for the young scholar. Space is limited. Don’t let your child miss this experience.
