Cal Poly (3-5, 2-2 Big Sky), which snapped a three-game Battle for the Golden Horseshoe losing streak a year ago in Alex G. Spanos Stadium, visits UC Davis (3-6, 3-2 Big Sky) for the 39th renewal of the rivalry Saturday afternoon in Aggie Stadium (10,849). The Mustangs, who fell out of the top 25 in both the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision coaches poll and The Sports Network media poll after losing to Yale 24-10 four weeks ago, let a 13-10 lead early in the fourth quarter slip away as Marcus Alford returned a kickoff 96 yards to lift Northern Arizona to a 17-13 victory last Saturday in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. UC Davis had won three of four games before falling Saturday at Montana State, 34-17. A year ago, Cal Poly finished 9-3 overall, falling 18-16 in the sec- ond round of the FCS playoffs to Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas. In earning their third FCS playoff berth, the Mustangs finished with a winning record for the 10th time in the last 12 seasons. UC Davis, under first-year head coach Ron Gould, dropped its first four games of the season to South Dakota, Nevada, Northern Arizona and Portland State by a combined score of 108-34 before opening Big Sky play with wins over Idaho State and Southern Utah. The Aggies fell 42-7 against Montana and beat Northern Colorado prior to last week’s loss at Montana State despite Gabe Manzanares’ 179 rushing yards, one touchdown, four catches and 212 all-purpose yards. Randy Wright completed 23 of 33 passes for 159 yards and a score while Tom Hemmingsen caught 10 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. Cal Poly football, presented by French Hospital Medical Center, opened Fall Camp with 58 returning lettermen, includ- ing 17 players who started at least four games in 2012. Topping the list of returnees were a pair of second-team All-Big Sky honorees -- linebacker Johnny Millard and defensive tackle Sullivan Grosz -- and eight others who earned All-Big Sky hon- orable mention praise. Junior Willie Tucker returned at wide receiver after leading the team with 28 catches a year ago while three of the five starters on the offensive front -- Giovanni Sani, Mike Freeman and Lefi Letuligasenoa -- returned as well. Tucker is lost for the season due to a knee injury. Also returning were junior Kristaan Ivory, the No. 2 rusher a year ago with 728 yards and eight touchdowns, and fellow slotback Cole Stanford with 241 rushing yards and 17 catches for 486 yards and four scores. MUSTANGS 10-10 IN SEASON OPENERS: Since beginning play in Division I FCS in 1994,Cal Poly has won 10 of 20 season openers, including eight of the last 11. A losing streak offive was snapped 10 years ago at Texas-El Paso, 34-13. The Mustangs beat Humboldt State42-7 in the 2004 opener and 23-17 in 2010, Fort Lewis 44-0 in the 2006 opener, San DiegoState 29-27 in the 2008 opener, Sacramento State 38-19 in the 2009 lidlifter and theUniversity of San Diego 41-14 in the 2012 opener and 38-16 in 2013. Tim Walsh is 4-1 in sea-son openers. Cal Poly is 14-5 in regular-season finales over the last 19 years -- Rich Ellersonwas 7-1 -- snapping a three-year losing streak with a 41-10 victory at South Alabama in 2011.Ellerson won five straight home openers prior to a 30-28 loss to Montana in 2008 and was 5-3 in eight seasons.

HOME ATTENDANCE: Cal Poly, which averaged 8,760 fans for five home games in 2010and 8,770 for five more home games in 2011, completed the 2012 regular season with an8,566 average for five home dates. The Mustangs placed 37th among all FootballChampionship Subdivision schools in home attendance two straight years when they aver-aged 9,588 fans for five home games in 2009, just above the average of 9,574 fans for sevenhome games in 2008. Montana led in 2009 with an average of 24,417 while Appalachian Statewas the leader in 2008 with a average of 25,161 for eight home contests. Cal Poly, which drew11,075, its fifth sellout since the expansion of Alex G. Spanos Stadium in 2007, for its 2011home opener against South Dakota State, recorded sellout No. 6 against UC Davis on Sept.22, 2012. So far this year Cal Poly is averaging 7,480 for four home dates.

CAL POLY AGAINST THE BIG SKY: Since moving to the Football Championship Subdivision(formerly Division I-AA) in 1994, Cal Poly is 36-40 against teams from the Big Sky Conference,including a 25-13 mark in the last 38 games over nine-plus seasons. Cal Poly has defeatedSacramento State (1995, 1997, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009) eight times, MontanaState (1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005) seven times, Idaho State (2004, 2005,2007, 2008, 2012) and Weber State (2002, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2013) five times, EasternWashington (1995, 2005), Montana (2005, 2010), Portland State (2012, 2013) and NorthernColorado (2007, 2012) twice each and Northern Arizona (2012), UC Davis (2012) and NorthDakota (2012) once. The Mustangs played five Big Sky opponents in 2003 and finished 2-3.Cal Poly beat three Big Sky teams in one season for the first time in 2004 and finished 2005with a 5-1 mark against Big Sky members, best in school history. In 2005, Cal Poly beatMontana, Montana State and Eastern Washington, the three teams who shared first place with5-2 marks. Cal Poly was 0-2 in 2011, falling to Montana and Eastern Washington. Rich Ellersonwas 19-15 against the Big Sky in eight seasons, including a 14-5 mark over his last five years.

ON STAGE: Stan Sheriff played in the 1954 East-West Shrine Classic and 51 years passedbefore a second Mustang was chosen to play in the contest. Linebacker Jordan Beck playedin the 2005 game at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Just one year later, defensive end ChrisGocong became the third Mustang to play in the prestigious game, moved to the AlamoDomein San Antonio, Texas. And linebacker Kyle Shotwell made it three in a row, playing in theEast-West Shrine Game in 2007 at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Shotwell was the leadingtackler in the game with seven and earned the Pat Tillman Award. Wide receiver RamsesBarden played in the 2009 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama while Asa Jackson played in the2012 Senior Bowl. Last January, slotback Deonte Williams played in the Casino Del Sol All-Star Game in Tucson. Cal Poly offensive lineman Ben Cobian played in the 2005 Las VegasAll-American Classic in Sam Boyd Stadium. Cornerback David Richardson and punterGilbert Rocha played in the Las Vegas All-American Classic in 2004 while cornerbackVaughn Jarrett and tackle Brett Nichols played in the 2003 event, then known as theParadise Bowl, at Dixie College in St. George, Utah.

MUSTANGS PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH: Montana State, which has won or shared theBig Sky Conference football championship each of the last three years, has been selected byboth the head coaches and media to capture the 2013 Big Sky title. Eight of the league's 13head coaches chose the Bobcats, with three selecting Eastern Washington and two pickingMontana. The poll was released July 15 during the Big Sky Conference Summer FootballKickoff in Park City, Utah. Cal Poly, which was picked to finish fifth a year ago and ended upsharing the Big Sky title last fall with Montana State and Eastern Washington, has beenpicked to finish fourth this year, followed by Northern Arizona.

CROWDS FOR HOME OPENERS: Cal Poly drew a record crowd of 11,075 for its 2007home opener against Weber State on Sept. 15 in newly renovated Alex G. Spanos Stadium.Prior to that game, the record crowd for a home opener was the 8,007 who showed up forRich Ellerson's debut as Mustang head coach on Sept. 1, 2001 against Montana. The 2008home opener against Montana drew 10,035. A total of 143,094 fans saw Cal Poly in 2005,exceeding the 2003 record total of 109,910. Cal Poly drew 48,222 fans for its five homegames in 2007, averaging 9,644.4 fans per game and broke the mark for home attendancein 2008 with 67,018 fans for seven dates (9,574 average). The 2009 home opener againstSacramento State drew 10,381, ninth largest in stadium history, while the 2010 contestagainst Humboldt State drew 7,345. The 2011 home opener against South Dakota Stateattracted 11,075 fans, the fifth sellout in Alex G. Spanos Stadium history. The last two homeopeners, both against the University of San Diego on Labor Day weekend and two or threeweeks prior to the start of Fall Quarter, drew 6,022 in 2012 and 5,840 in 2013.

PLAYOFFS BY THE DOTS: Frisco, Texas, was the host site for the NCAA Division I FootballChampionship game for the third straight year. Frisco emerged from a pool of several citiesthat submitted bids to serve as the host site for the championship game for three years,beginning with the 2010 season. Hosted by the Southland Conference, the 2012 champi-onship game was played on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 and was won by North Dakota State overSam Houston State for the second straight year. The championship game, held at ToyotaStadium, is the culmination of an expanded 20-team championship bracket. As a result ofthis expansion, the game is being played a few weeks later than in years past. The field willbe further expanded to 24 teams starting with the 2013 season. Cal Poly qualified for theFCS playoffs in 2005, 2008 and 2012. Eastern Washington earned the 2010 title in the firstgame since the championship was moved from Chattanooga, Tenn. The FCS includes theconferences and institutions that compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship, inaddition to two conferences who choose not to participate in the football championship, theIvy League and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Pioneer League will receive anautomatic berth in 2013, giving the field 11 automatic berths and 13 at-large selections.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Cal Poly’s 2013 football team captains are linebacker Johnny Millard,offensive lineman Lefi Letuligasenoa, slotback Cole Stanford and defensive tackleSullivan Grosz, who also was a team captain as a junior last fall. Millard and Grosz weresecond-team All-Big Sky selections in 2012 while Stanford and Letuligasenoa were honor-able mentions.

WORKING OVERTIME: Cal Poly has played in seven overtime games since the FCS rulewas adopted in 1994. The Mustangs are 1-6, beating host New Mexico State in one OT, 38-35, in 1997. Both of Cal Poly’s losses at home -- 29-26 to Northern Iowa in 2002 and 53-51to Eastern Washington in 2011 -- were in triple overtime. Cal Poly fell 35-32 in one OT atIdaho State on Sept. 7, 1996; 43-40 in four OTs at Weber State on Nov. 3, 2001; dropped a36-35 single-overtime decision to Wisconsin of the Big Ten in 2008; and fell 21-14 in oneovertime at Montana on Oct. 19, 2013.

NEW MENTORS: Two of Cal Poly's 12 football foes this fall have a first-year head coach.Dale Lindsey takes over at San Diego after serving as defensive coordinator for the Torerosa year ago while Ron Gould, who was an assistant at Cal for 16 seasons, replaces BobBiggs at UC Davis. Jody Sears, interim head coach at Weber State last fall, had “interim”removed from the title during the offseason. In addition to Sears, second-year head coach-es include Tim DeRuyter at Fresno State, Jim McElwain at Colorado State, Mick Delaneyat Montana and Tony Reno at Yale.

BIG SKY VS. THE REST: Big Sky Conference members were 9-3 on the opening week-end of the 2013 season, including two wins over FBS schools (Southern Utah at SouthAlabama and Eastern Washington at Oregon State), but slipped to 3-8, 6-7 and 4-6 the nextthree weeks (22-26 overall). A year ago, Big Sky schools were 7-6 on the opening weekendof the 2012 season followed by 6-6 and 6-5 marks. They were 23-22 in non-conferencegames for the year, including a 3-3 mark in the FCS playoffs.

FAKE GRASS: Cal Poly lost 19 consecutive games on artificial turf before snapping thestreak with a 34-13 triumph at UTEP on Sept. 6, 2003. Prior to the win at UTEP, Cal Poly’slast win on artificial turf was Sept. 22, 1990 at Portland State, 36-23. The Mustangs have won17 of their last 42 games on artificial turf, including a 3-1 mark in 2010 and 4-3 in 2012. TheMustangs were 0-5 in 2009 with losses at Ohio, San Jose State, Montana, North Dakota andUC Davis. Cal Poly was 2-3 on artificial turf in 2011 -- Montana (loss), Northern Illinois (loss),North Dakota (win), UC Davis (loss) and South Alabama (win). All seven Cal Poly games onthe road in 2012 were on artificial surfaces, including wins at Wyoming, North Dakota, WeberState and Northern Arizona. The Mustangs lost to Fresno State 41-25 on Sept. 7, ColoradoState 34-17 on Sept. 14 and Montana 21-14 on Oct. 19, defeated Portland State 38-34 onSept. 26 and also will play at UC Davis this season.

MUSTANG STADIUM OVERHAUL: Cal Poly held groundbreaking ceremonies for renova-tion of Mustang Stadium on Sept. 10, 2005, at the Richard J. O'Neill Green. The project,which included an expanded field, press box, donor suites, new lighting, a memorial plazaentrance and upgraded restrooms, has expanded seating capacity to 11,075 fans and costabout $21 million to complete. The name of the facility, originally opened in 1935, is official-ly Mustang Memorial Field at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

TWENTIETH YEAR OF FCS: This fall Cal Poly enters its 95th season of football since 1915 and the20th season of playing at the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) level. TheMustangs played their 100th game as an FCS member at UTEP on Sept. 6, 2003, earned their 100thwin Oct. 9, 2010, at Old Dominion and played their 200th FCS game Nov. 19, 2011, at SouthAlabama. The Mustangs, currently 121-99 as an FCS school, moved to Division I-AA from Division IIin 1994 and were members of the now-defunct American West Conference (Southern Utah,Sacramento State, Cal State Northridge), before becoming an independent in 1996. After eight yearsas an FCS Independent, the Mustangs became a charter member of the Great West FootballConference in 2004. Following eight seasons in the Great West, Cal Poly moved to the Big SkyConference in 2012.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Senior quarterback Andre Broadous, who ran for two touchdowns,passed for two more and surpassed the 100-yard mark both rushing and passing against San Diego,was the initial Root Sports Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the 2012 season.Broadous rushed for 113 yards on just 15 carries and completed 12 of 19 passes for 135 yards.Senior slotback Deonte Williams (19 carries, 187 yards, one TD, one catch) and junior placekickerBobby Zalud (3-3 PATs. 1-1 field goals (game-clinching 51-yarder), 42.2 average on eight punts, fourtouchbacks on five kickoffs) were honored by the conference following the Wyoming game. Zalud (4-4 PATs, 3-3 FG, 34.0 average in three punts) was honored again after the Portland State game.Senior linebacker Kennith Jackson (7 tackles, 2 int.) was chosen following the Idaho State gamewhile sophomore linebacker Nick Dzubnar (9 tackles, 1 int. return for TD) was honored after theNorthern Arizona contest. No Mustang has been honored yet in 2013.

CONFERENCE SWITCH: Cal Poly, along with UC Davis, joined the Big SkyConference for football only, beginning last fall. The announcement was made Sept.7, 2010. Southern Utah and North Dakota joined the Big Sky as full members. TheMustangs maintain membership in the Big West Conference for the majority of theirother intercollegiate sports. The four former Great West members join Montana,

Montana State, Idaho State, Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona, Sacramento State, NorthernColorado, Weber State and Portland State. STRETCHING THE TRUTH: Cal Poly's tallest players on the 2013 roster are senior offensive line-man Giovanni Sani, redshirt freshman offensive linemen Nick Enriquez, Ryan Neil and MattFisher, junior defensive lineman Wesley Flowers and freshman defensive lineman Zach Rusick, all6-5. Shortest is freshman defensive back Matt McNab at 5-7 while junior Chris Nicholls, placekick-er Bobby Zalud and sophomore Rocky Meszaros stand 5-8. The lightest is sophomore wide receiv-er Roland Jackson at 145 pounds while the heaviest are senior offensive lineman LefiLetuligasenoa at 300 and senior defensive lineman Sullivan Grosz at 295. Freshman wide receiv-er Kyante Wilson is the youngest Cal Poly player -- he turned 18 on September 18. Freshman line-backer Jared Mohamed turned 18 on September 12 while freshman wide receiver Cam Akins turned18 on August 30. Oldest Mustang is junior linebacker Kyle Maddux, who will turn 26 on December15. From 2007-11, the Mustangs had two players -- offensive lineman Art Munoz and wide receiverJarred Houston -- who were born on August 8, 1988 (8-8-88).

INDOOR FOOTBALL: The Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz., was the fourth indoor football facilityin which Cal Poly had won a game, posting a 42-34 victory over Northern Arizona on Nov. 17, 2012.The Mustangs beat South Dakota 38-24 in the DakotaDome in 2010, earned wins over North Dakotain the Alerus Center in both 2011 and 2012 and have won four times in Idaho State's domed stadium.They are 0-6 combined in domed stadiums at Idaho (0-1), Northern Iowa (0-3) and North DakotaState (0-2). Overall, Cal Poly is 8-13 indoors and does not play indoors this fall.

THE 200 CLUB: Mark Rodgers scampered for 235 yards on just 15 carries against South Dakota onNov. 6, 2010, becoming the first Mustang in five years to surpass the 200-yard mark and the 16th timea Cal Poly running back broke that barrier. Rodgers’ performance is No. 8 on the all-time Cal Polysingle-game rushing list. Prior to Rodgers’ feat, the last Mustang to exceed 200 yards on the groundwas James Noble with 221 yards against Eastern Washington on Nov. 5, 2005. Two weeks lateragainst Idaho State he rushed for 248 yards and broke a school record by scoring five times. CraigYoung holds the school single-game rushing record with 283 yards against Saint Mary's in 1996, fol-lowed by Louis Jackson (267 vs. Portland State in 1978) and Paul Dickens (266 vs. Portland Statein 1979).

FRIENDLY CONFINES: Following three straight 4-1 seasons in Alex G. Spanos Stadium and a 5-0mark last fall, the Mustangs have won 49 of their last 60 home contests. Overall, the Mustangs havewon 44 of their last 73 games (62 percent) and 77 of 122 contests (64 percent) going back to the 2002finale and have won 10 of their last 22 and 29 of 59 on the road (3-3 in 2010, 2-4 in 2011, 4-3 in 2012).

NEW RULES FOR 2013: Players who target and contact defenseless players above the shoulders will beejected. If the foul occurs in the first half, the player will miss the rest of the game. If it happens in the sec-ond half or overtime, the player also will miss the first half of the next game. Blocks below the waist will beallowed only by “stationary players in typical line play.” A 10-second runoff with less than a minute remainingin a half will be added when the clock is stopped for an injury. A minimum of three seconds must be on theclock in order to spike the ball to stop the clock. If there’s less time, the offense must run a play. A player whochanges numbers during the game must report to the referee, who will announce it. Uniform numerals mustcontrast with the color of the jersey.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Eight games into the 2013 season, Cal Poly is No. 1 in rushing offense (281.0), No. 2in sacks allowed (.50), No. 18 in turnovers lost (10), No. 18 in interceptions thrown (5), No. 19 in third down con-version percentage defense (33.1), No. 27 in fumbles lost (5), No. 29 in total offense (437.3) and No. 30 in redzone offense (85.7 percent). Individually, Kristaan Ivory is No. 27 in rushing yards per game (101.0), No. 25 inrushing yards (808) and No. 29 in all-purpose yards per game (127.13) while Paul Hundley is No. 7 in punting(44.0). Nick Dzubnar’s 79 tackles is 19th while his three forced fumbles is No. 12. Cameron Ontko is No. 16 intackles per game (10.0).

CONFERENCE LEADERS: The only Mustang who is a leader in the Big Sky Conference is Nick Dzubnarwith three forced fumbles. Kristaan Ivory is No. 3 in rushing yards per game (101.0) and No. 4 in all-purposeyards (127.1). Cameron Ontko is No. 4 in tackles per game (10.0) while Dzubnar is fifth (9.9). Alex Hubbardis No. 6 in punt returns (2.6) while Paul Hundley is No. 6 in punting (44.0). Bobby Zalud is No. 5 in field goalsmade per game (0.88) and No. 4 in PAT percentage (95.8) while Sullivan Grosz is No. 5 with his 5.0 sacks.As a team, Cal Poly tops the Big Sky in rushing offense (281.0), sacks allowed (4) and opponents’ third-downconversion (33.1 percent) and is No. 3 in PAT kicking, opponents first downs and red zone defense.

AGAINST THE FBS: For the seventh time in 12 years, Cal Poly played two Football Bowl Subdivisionschools in a season. The Mustangs lost to Fresno State 41-25 on Sept. 7 and to Colorado State 34-17 onSept. 14. In 2002 Cal Poly played two FBS (formerly Division I-A) opponents in one season for the first timein school history (Toledo and Kent State), and did it again in 2003 (UTEP and Akron), 2006 (San Jose Stateand San Diego State), 2008 (San Diego State and Wisconsin), 2009 (Ohio and San Jose State) and 2011(San Diego State and Northern Illinois). Cal Poly is 4-10 in its last 14 games against FBS schools, defeatingUTEP 34-13 in the 2003 opener, San Diego State 16-14 in 2006 and 30-28 in 2008 and Wyoming 24-22 in2012. The Mustangs, 5-26 against FBS schools since 1980, play at New Mexico State in 2014, Arizona Statein 2015 and Nevada in 2016. Only 15 FCS schools in the nation have more than five wins against FBS foes,led by Youngstown State with 20.

OPPOSING MARKS: Cal Poly’s 12 opponents this fall were 67-70 a year ago, led by Eastern Washington(11-3), Fresno State (9-4) and San Diego and Northern Arizona (both 8-3). The dozen opponents posted a6-5 mark on the opening weekend this fall, followed by 3-6, 5-4, 5-6, 7-5, 7-4, 4-7, 7-4 and 6-3 marks (50-44). The Mustangs’ 2012 foes were a combined 56-69. Eastern Washington was 11-3 and while San Diegoand Northern Arizona both were 8-3. Cal Poly’s 2011 opponents were 68-45, including Montana at 11-3,Northern Illinois at 9-3, North Dakota at 8-3 and San Diego State at 8-5. Cal Poly’s 11 foes in 2010 were 56-56. The 2009 opponents were a combined 71-59, with Montana (14-1) posting the best record.

A SACK JOB: Cal Poly's defense recorded a school-record 50 sacks in 11 games in 2004 and broke themark again in 2005 with 62 sacks in 13 games. Meanwhile, the Mustang offense protected its quarterbackswell, surrendering just 11 sacks in 2004 and 15 in 2005. The 2006 squad allowed just 11 sacks and the 2007team allowed only 15 sacks (27th in the nation) but notched just 21 on defense; the zero sacks at Texas Statemarked the first time in 43 games the Mustangs did not have a sack in a game. in 2008, the Mustang defensenotched 37 sacks -- No. 2 in the nation -- while the offensive line allowed nine. In 2009, Cal Poly recorded17 sacks (six against Dixie State and five against Southern Utah) and allowed 17. In 2010, the Mustangsallowed just 10 sacks (16th in the nation) while notching 26 in 11 games (26th in the nation). Cal Poly had22 sacks in the 2011 season, all in the last nine games, while the offensive line allowed just 20 in 11 games.In 12 games last year, Cal Poly notched 17 sacks and allowed just 10 sacks. The 2013 Mustangs haverecorded eight sacks, allowing just four, in eight games.

TRIPLE FIGURES: Cal Poly, which did not allow a 100-yard rusher in 19 straight games and just two of itslast 33 contests, allowed more than 100 yards to a running back in five of six games capped by Yale’s TylerVarga. The streak of 19 ended when Tim Flanders of Sam Houston State gained 101 yards in an FCS playoffgame last Dec. 1. Kenn James of San Diego rushed for 102 yards, most on a 67-yard fourth-quarter romp, inthe 2013 season opener while Chris Nwoke of Colorado State rushed for 133 yards on Sept. 14 and DJAdams of Portland State netted 126 yards on Sept. 26. Tyler Varga of Yale ran for 114 yards on Oct. 5. The19-game streak began after Northern Illinois’ Jasmin Hopkins (143 yards) and Chandler Harnish (118) bothrushed for over 100 yards on Sept. 24, 2011. No Cal Poly football opponent in 2010 produced a running backwho rushed for 100 or more yards against the Mustangs, but the streak of 11 such games was snapped in the2011 opener as San Diego State’s Ronnie Hillman rushed for 189 yards on 28 carries and scored twice. Fouropposing running backs rushed for over 100 yards against the Mustangs in 2009, three in 2008 and six in2007, including a pair of 200-yard games -- Deonte Jackson (214) of Weber State and Cory Koenig (259) ofSouth Dakota State. In 2002, each of Cal Poly's first eight opponents produced a 100-yard rusher. Nine of the11 opponents in 2002 had a 100-yard rusher.

ZEROES ON THE BOARD: Cal Poly has scored in 166 consecutive games. Last time the Mustangs wereshut out was in 1998 by Nevada, 63-0, in Reno. The Mustangs also were shut out by Northern Arizona in1998, 9-0. Cal Poly's two shutouts to start the 2006 season were its first since a 31-0 shutout over NorthernColorado on Nov. 13, 2004. Rich Ellerson earned six shutouts in eight seasons as head coach at Cal Poly.Cal Poly was held to a single field goal twice during the current run and to a lone touchdown four times aswell.

MILESTONES: Among the Mustangs on the 2012 roster who achieved season or career statistical milestones in the Cal Polyrecord book were Deonte Williams with 1,506 rushing yards (No. 2 on the list), Kennith Jackson with 302 career tackles (No.5), Andre Broadous with 30 career rushing touchdowns (tie for No. 3), Williams with 12 rushing TDs in 2012 (tie for No. 5),Broadous with 31 career passing TDs (No. 5) and 18 in 2012 (tie for No. 6) and Bobby Zalud with 55 PAT kicks made (No. 3)and attempted (No. 3) and 91 points scored (No. 1). Williams became the 15th Mustang to crack the 1,000-yard mark in rushingand had ten 100-yard games last season, breaking James Noble’s mark of eight (2005). He also cracked the 100-yard mark ina school-record six straight games.

ALL-BIG SKY: Senior slotback Deonte Williams and senior middle line-backer Kennith Jackson were Cal Poly's first-ever All-Big Sky Conferencefirst-team selections last fall. Williams, who rushed for 1,506 yards in 12games, and Jackson, who recorded 97 tackles, led Cal Poly to a 9-3 recordand, in its first season in the Big Sky, a share of the conference withMontana State and Eastern Washington, all 7-1. Defensive tackle SullivanGrosz and outside linebacker Johnny Millard, both juniors, earned spotson the all-conference second team while 11 other Mustangs are honorablementions. The list of Mustang honorable mentions on offense includedsophomore wide receiver Willie Tucker, junior slotback Cole Stanford,junior tackle Giovanni Sani, junior guard Lefi Letuligasenoa, senior centerGeoff Hyde and senior quarterback Andre Broadous. Honorable mentionson defense include sophomore linebacker Nick Dzubnar, senior cornerbackNico Molino and junior cornerback Vante Smith-Johnson. Junior punterBobby Zalud and special teams player Chris Judge, a junior, also earnedhonorable mention praise. Mustang fourth-year head coach Tim Walshshared Big Sky Coach of the Year honors with Eastern Washington's BeauBaldwin. Walsh is 29-24 at Cal Poly and 146-106 in 22-plus seasons over-all, including four years at Sonoma State and 14 at Portland State.

IN THE PROS: When the National Football League opened training campsin July, Cal Poly had three former players on active rosters -- wide receiverRamses Barden with the New York Giants, cornerback Asa Jackson withthe Baltimore Ravens and running back Deonte Williams with the OaklandRaiders. Barden and Williams were cut on Aug. 31. Defensive end ChrisGocong ruptured an Achilles in early August 2012, missed the entire sea-son and was released by Cleveland last April. He is a free agent. ScottWinnewisser was released by the New Orleans Saints in August 2012.Cornerback Courtney Brown was on the roster of the New York Giants inthe summer of 2011 but never played, while linebacker Mark Restelli wasreleased by the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 3, 2011, despite a strong presea-son. Wide receiver Dominique Johnson was cut by the Minnesota Vikingsduring the 2011 preseason as well. Linebackers Jordan Beck (DenverBroncos) and Kyle Shotwell were released in 2008 and Brown was let goby the Dallas Cowboys in 2009 and signed with the Giants in early 2010.Gocong, Beck and Shotwell were Buck Buchanan Award winners at Cal

Poly. Restelli played three seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos in theCanadian Football League, recording 74 defensive tackles, 21 specialteams tackles, and 4 sacks. The Montreal Alouettes signed Restelli in early2012 but released him on June 16, two weeks prior to the regular season.Beck was drafted in the third round in 2005 by Atlanta, Gocong was a third-round choice of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2006 and traded to Cleveland inApril 2010. Brown was chosen by Dallas in the seventh round in 2007,Shotwell signed as a free agent shortly after the 2007 draft with theOakland Raiders and Barden was a third-round choice of the Giants in2009. Shotwell was released by the Raiders on Sept. 1, 2007. He played inexhibition games with the Raiders in 2007 and Indianapolis Colts in 2008and was on the practice squads of the Minnesota Vikings, Tampa BayBuccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs, all in 2008. Beck was cut by theFalcons on Sept. 3, 2007, signed a free-agent contract with Denver on Oct.17, 2007 and was released midway through the 2008 season.

RECENT SUCCESS ON THE FIELD: Cal Poly has produced nine winningseasons in the last 10 years, including 2012, and has been ranked in the top25 eight of the last nine campaigns, also including 2012. The Mustangs, whohave won 77 of their last 122 games going back to the 2002 season finale,have been ranked as high as No. 3, which occurred in the 2005 season andthat team settled for a No. 6 final ranking. The 2004 Mustangs were rankedas high as No. 5 and the 2008 club finished No. 8 in the coaches poll andNo. 10 in the media poll. Cal Poly was ranked as high as No. 11 in 2012.

STREAKING MUSTANGS: Cal Poly won seven straight games in 2012,2008, 2004 and 1997. The 1973 Mustang squad won its first eight gameswhile the 1953 team posted a perfect 9-0 mark. Longest winning streak byCal Poly is 13 games from 1932-34.

Jake Irwin plus tackles Grosz and Chris Lawrence -- returned. At linebacker, junior NickDzubnar moved from the outside to replace Kenneth Jackson in the middle (Mike) while Millardshifted from Will to Sam. Junior Cameron Ontko took over at Will. Eight of the nine defensivebacks who played six or more games last fall returned along with senior three-year lettermanBijon Samoodi, who sat out the 2012 season with a hip injury.

Bobby Zalud, who handled all kicking duties (55-for-55 PATs, 12-for-16 field goals, 40.6punting average), and return specialist Chris Nicholls (24.0 average per kickoff return, 8.5average per punt return) returned as well.

Eight games into the current season, Ivory is ranked No. 3 in the Big Sky and No. 27 in theFCS with his average of 101 rushing yards per contest. The junior is averaging 6.2 yards percarry, scored three touchdowns against San Diego on runs of 81, 2 and 61 yards en route toa 185-yard performance, accumulated 184 yards and one score against Portland State, madea career-high eight catches against Yale and scored three times, two via rushing and one ona pass, against Weber State, rushing for 100 yards. He added 121 yards, his fourth 100-yardgame of the season and fifth of the year, in the loss at Montana two weeks ago. Ivory alsoleads the Mustangs in receiving with 23 catches for 123 yards and a score.

Cal Poly’s three linebackers top the chart in tackles. Middle linebacker Nick Dzubnar hasa team-leading 79 tackles, 12 against Montana, while outside linebacker Cameron Ontko hasmade 70 tackles, 14 against the Grizzlies. Outside linebacker/rush end Johnny Millard has 67stops, including a career-high 13 in the loss to Yale.

Sophomore quarterback Dano Graves, who earned his first collegiate start three weeksago against Weber State and responded with 116 yards on the ground and 169 yards passing,completing 13 of 16 passes, three for touchdowns, was 13-for-18 against Montana for 95 yardsand rushed for 91 yards on 14 trips. Last week against Northern Arizona, the Folsom HighSchool graduate and transfer from Air Force connected on 11 of 22 passes for 115 yards andrushed for 86 yards. Graves is the third Mustang to start at quarterback this fall, following VinceMoraga (two starts, knee injury) and Chris Brown (three starts, hip injury).

Cal Poly had difficulty putting together two solid halves of football in the first half of the cur-rent season. In their first three road games, the Mustangs were outscored 82-17 in the first halfand outgained 926-375 in total offense. In the second half, Cal Poly outscored its first threeroad foes 63-26 and compiled a 926-515 advantage in total yards.

Cal Poly and Northern Arizona battled to a 10-10 standoff in the first half and, after a score-less third quarter, the Mustangs took a 13-10 lead on Bobby Zalud’s 22-yard field goal on thefirst play of the fourth quarter. Alford answered with his 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.Cal Poly got the ball back four times, but punted twice and lost the ball on downs and an inter-ception as the Lumberjacks held on for the win. The Mustangs had advantages of 19-16 in first

downs, 352 to 277 in total offense and a two-minute edge in time of possession.After averaging 29 points and 457 yards in its first six games, Cal Poly has struggled offen-

sively, scoring just 27 points and accumulating 755 total yards the last two weeks. TheMustangs are without Tucker, Moraga and Letuligasenoa for the rest of the season, Ivorymissed most of the Northern Arizona game with an ankle injury and Cole Stanford has missedplaying time with injuries as well.

Special teams play has resulted in three Cal Poly field goals and a pair of Mustang puntsblocked by the opposition, two Mustang punts and one kickoff returned for touchdowns and twopunts hitting Cal Poly players and recovered by their foes.

Coached by Gould (first season, 3-6, Oregon ‘88), UC Davis returned 45 lettermen, includ-ing 18 offensive and defensive starters, off last year’s team which went 4-7 overall and finishedtied for eighth in the Big Sky at 3-5. The Aggies elevated their football program to the FootballChampionship Subdivision in 2007 and are still seeking their first FCS playoff berth. Theyearned NCAA Division II playoff berths 18 times, including the 1982 championship final.

For the season, Manzanares has rushed for 890 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 5.1yards per carry. Wright has completed 102 of 158 passes (65 percent) for 1,049 yards andeight scores. His favorite targets are Hemmingsen with 44 catches, Corey Galindo with 27 andT.J. King with 20. Free safety Charles Boyett leads the Aggies defensively with 61 tackles andan interception. Strong safety Aaryn Jones has 54 tackles and a pair of thefts while defensiveend Nick King has recorded six sacks. UC Davis is averaging 330 yards in total offense pergame -- 147 on the ground and 183 through the air -- and scoring 16 points a contest whilegiving up 387 yards (190 rushing, 197 passing) and 24 points per game.

Gould, a 1988 graduate of Oregon, was an assistant coach at Cal for 16 seasons beforereplacing Bob Biggs as UC Davis head coach last December. A defensive back for the Ducks,Gould was a graduate assistant at Oregon (1990-91) and coached the defensive backs atPortland State (in 1992 under Tim Walsh) and Boise State (1993-96) before moving on to Cal.

Cal Poly, which won three straight games against UC Davis from 2006-08 to even theseries at 16-16-2, lost three in a row to the Aggies the following three years before snappingthe losing streak with a 28-20 victory last fall in San Luis Obispo. Deonte Williams rushed for188 yards and three touchdowns while Akaninyene Umoh ran 51 yards for another score asthe Mustangs overcame an early 10-0 deficit for the win. UC Davis leads the series 19-17-2.The Aggies won 24-17 in Davis two years ago. Walsh is 6-8 against UC Davis -- 1-3 whilecoaching at Sonoma State, 4-2 while at Portland State and 1-3 at Cal Poly -- while Gould is 0-0 against Cal Poly. Against the Aggies, the Mustangs are 11-8 at home and 6-11-2 in Davis.

Next week Cal Poly plays the first of two consecutive home games, hosting SacramentoState on Nov. 9 at 6:05 p.m. The Mustangs also entertain 2010 FCS champion EasternWashington on Nov. 16 at 12:40 p.m. (ROOT Sports) before closing out the 2013 regular sea-son at Northern Colorado on Nov. 23.

Mustang StandoutsNick Dzubnar, Linebacker, Junior, 6-2, 240, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

Dzubnar moved from Sam to Mike this fall and, as a junior, leads the Mustangs with 79 total tackles (No. 5 in Big Sky),including 5.5 for lost yardage, one sack, four pass breakups, one quarterback hurry and three forced fumbles (No. 1 in BigSky, No. 12 in FCS). He earned 14 tackles against Colorado State and 12 each against Yale and Montana. He has five gameswith double-digit tackles this season, 11 in his Mustang career and has played in all 30 games. Dzubnar was Cal Poly’s lead-ing tackler as a sophomore in 2012 with 107 en route to All-Big Sky honorable mention praise. He garnered a career-high 15tackles against Weber State and added 12 against UC Davis. He returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown atNorthern Arizona and had five pass breakups for the year. Dzubnar closed out his freshman season with 10 tackles at SouthAlabama and finished with 28 tackles for season. He was a redshirt in 2010. His career totals: 110-104--214 tackles, 13 TFLs,six forced fumbles, two int., 10 pass breakups. Dzubnar is a 2010 graduate of Mission Viejo High, where he earned All-OrangeCounty and All-CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 Conference honors as a senior linebacker. The Diablos held opponents to just10.5 points per game in 2009. Dzubnar also was a wrestler for the Diablos and played ice hockey outside of high school.

Sullivan Grosz, Defensive Tackle, 6-4, 295, Senior, Fresno, CAGrosz notched a season-high 10 tackles at Montana on Oct. 19, including a sack. His season totals are 48 tackles and 5.0 sacks. He also has four

quarterback hurries to his credit and blocked a Yale field goal attempt. As a junior, Grosz garnered 58 tackles in 12 games along with two forced fum-bles, 6.0 sacks and 13.5 tackles for lost yardage en route to second-team All-Big Sky honors. He recovered two fumbles and blocked a field goal in theNorth Dakota game, produced two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup in the Weber State contest and three sacks, a career-high 11 tackles anda forced fumble in the Northern Colorado game. Grosz, who did not miss a game in his first three seasons at Cal Poly and has started 30 straight con-tests, started all 11 games at defensive tackle as a sophomore in 2011 and recorded 46 total tackles, including 31 solo stops, en route to All-Great Westhonorable mention praise. He led the team with 6.5 sacks and 12.0 TFLs. As a freshman in 2010, Grosz played all 11 games at nose tackle as a red-shirt freshman, backing up Erich Klemme. He recorded 14 tackles (10 solo), including one sack against Old Dominion, and also notched quarterbackhurries against Old Dominion and UC Davis. Grosz was a redshirt in 2009. His career totals: 91-75--166 tackles, 34.5 TFL, 18.5 sacks. Grosz was atight end and linebacker at San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno, where he recorded 116 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions and three fum-ble recoveries as a junior and nearly 100 more tackles, including six sacks and one blocked field goal as a senior for the Panthers. He was a team cap-tain, academic award winner, student body vice president, homecoming king and on the honor roll with a 4.10 grade-point average.

Kristaan Ivory, Slotback, Junior, 5-9, 200, Los Angeles, CAIvory has four 100-yard games as a junior and five in his Mustang career. This fall, he has rushed for a career-high

185 yards against San Diego, 184 against Portland State, 100 against Weber State and 121 against Montana. He alsorushed for 97yards at Fresno State and is No. 3 in the Big Sky with 808 yards, averaging 101 yards a game and 6.2 percarry. Ivory has scored six touchdowns, three in the season opener against San Diego. Ivory also has caught a team-lead-ing 23 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. He needs 192 yards to become the 16th Mustang to surpass 1,000 yardsin a season and his 1,548 career rushing yards are 343 yards shy of cracking the top 10. As a sophomore in 2012, Ivoryrushed for 728 yards and eight touchdowns as a backup to both Deonte Williams and Cole Stanford. He earned his first100-yard game as a Mustang with exactly 100 yards on 19 carries in Big Sky title-clinching win at Northern Arizona andalso rushed for 94 yards at Eastern Washington. He played in all 11 games as a true freshman in 2011, mostly on spe-cial teams. Ivory’s career totals: 242-1,548-14 rushing, 30-180-3 receiving, 13-280 (21.5 avg.) kickoff returns. In three var-sity seasons at Cathedral High in Los Angeles, Ivory rushed for 2,059 yards, caught 95 passes and made 263 tackles.He was a team captain, earned team MVP honors and was a first-team All-Mission League selection in 2010.

Johnny Millard, Linebacker, 6-3, 240, Senior, Dublin, CAIn his final season as a Mustang, Millard has recorded 67 tackles, including 4.5 for lost yardage. He also has two pass breakups and a pair of quarterback

hurries. Millard notched a career-high 13 tackles against Yale and Colorado State and added 12 tackles against Portland State. As a junior, Millard collected 12tackles against Northern Colorado and finished third on the team with 72 tackles to go with a trio of quarterback hurries. Cal Poly’s leading tackler with 82 as asophomore, including 49 solo stops, Millard twice recorded 12 tackles in a game with four solo stops against Northern Illinois and 10 against Central Oklahoma.He also notched 10 tackles against Montana and South Dakota. His season totals also included 9.0 tackles for lost yardage. As a redshirt freshman in 2010,Millard recorded 38 total tackles (18 solo) at an outside linebacker position, including two sacks (one each vs. Montana and UC Davis). He intercepted a passand returned it 24 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter against McNeese State and made 11 tackles (seven solo) against Montana. Millard also hadthree quarterback hurries for the season. Millard was a redshirt in 2009 and was named defensive scout team player of the year. His career totals: 129-120-249tackles (No. 14 all-time at Cal Poly), 22 TFL, 5.5 sacks, 2 int. and nine games with double-digit tackles. He notched 116 tackles, including 23 for lost yardage,as a senior at Foothill High in Pleasanton. Millard also recorded 12 pass breakups, nine forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries, three sacks and a pair of inter-ceptions in senior season (2008). On offense, he caught 20 passes for 342 yards and a pair of TDs. His father, Keith, was a defensive lineman at WashingtonState and with the Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers in a 10-year NFL career.

Giovanni Sani, Offensive Line, 6-5, 285, Senior, Modesto, CASani has started 35 games on Cal Poly’s offensive line. He is a starter at left tackle for the second straight year after playing at left tackle in 2011 and on the right side

of the offensive front in 2009 and 2010. Sani has started all eight games this fall as a senior and is part of a line that has surrendered just four sacks, best in the Big Skyand No. 2 in the FCS. Cal Poly’s rushing offense is No. 1 in the nation, averaging 281.0 yards a game. Sani started all 12 games of junior season (2012) en route to All-Big Sky Conference honorable mention praise. He was part of an offensive line which helped Cal Poly finish first in the FCS in passing efficiency, third in rushing offense,seventh in scoring offense, eighth in fewest sacks allowed (10 in 12 games) and No. 13 in total offense. Sani was Scott Winnewisser’s backup at left tackle in 2011, play-ing in 10 games with four starts as a redshirt sophomore. The Mustangs were No. 6 in the nation in rushing offense, No. 27 in scoring offense and No. 4 in total offense.In 2010, Sani started in the first two games of the season before an injury sidelined him the rest of the year. He was granted a medical redshirt. As a true freshman in 2009,Sani played all 11 games at right tackle, starting the final nine after Art Munoz fractured his leg in the Ohio contest. He contributed to the Mustangs’ national rankings ofNo. 19 in rushing offense, No. 23 in time of possession and No. 36 in sacks allowed. Sani anchored an offensive line that led Central Catholic to an 11-2 overall record, 5-0 mark for first place in the Western Athletic Conference and a runner-up finish in the CIF-Sac-Joaquin Section Division V playoffs. He also was a defensive end, record-ing 66 total tackles (30 solo), en route to Western Athletic Conference lineman of the year and all-section and all-state honors. Sani also was a wrestler at Central Catholic.

Tim Walsh, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at theUnited States Military Academy for two seasons, was named Cal Poly’s16th head football coach on Jan. 9, 2009, and, after guiding theMustangs to a 4-7 mark in his first campaign, turned it around with threeconsecutive winning seasons, a Great West Conference title in 2011and, in his fourth year at the helm of the Mustangs, a share of the BigSky Conference crown and a second-round NCAA Division I FootballChampionship Subdivision playoff berth in 2012.

Under Walsh’s guidance, Cal Poly finished 7-4, 6-5 and 9-3 in hislast three seasons at Cal Poly.

Walsh has compiled a 146-106 record in 22-plus seasons as a college head coach, includingfour years at Sonoma State (27-14 from 1989-92), 14 more seasons at Portland State (90-68 from1993-2006) and four at Cal Poly (29-24 from 2009-Present). He guided Sonoma State to theNorthern California Athletic Conference title in 1991 (ending UC Davis’ streak of 20 consecutiveconference titles), a pair of NCAA Division II playoff berths while at Sonoma State and four morepostseason berths while at Portland State.

A charismatic speaker and motivator, Walsh guided Sonoma State to three winning seasons infour years at the helm of the Seawolves and 10 more above-.500 campaigns in his 14-year termat Portland State. With the Vikings, Walsh coached 14 All-Americans and 11 Academic All-Americans.

During Walsh’s 11 seasons when the Vikings were in the Big Sky, he coached players whoearned 39 first-team All-Big Sky honors, 51 on the second team, 80 honorable mentions, 58Academic All-Big Sky honorees, 59 Big Sky Players of the Week, 20 national player of the weekhonorees, five Walter Payton Award finalists and one Buck Buchanan Award finalist.

Cal Poly’s 2009 squad posted a 4-1 record at home, finished No. 6 in the nation in punt returns(15.60), No. 11 in turnover margin (+1.00), 19th in rushing offense (178.45 yards per game) and23rd in time of possession (31:22) and was ranked as high as No. 12 in the national polls.

The 2010 Mustang squad also finished 4-1 at home en route to a 7-4 mark. The Mustangsearned six come-from-behind victories, split six games on a very difficult road schedule one yearafter going winless (0-6) and winning three straight games late in the year to put Cal Poly in a posi-tion to compete for a playoff berth. Cal Poly’s triple-option offense finished fourth in the nation inrushing offense, averaging 252.91 yards a game, and 14th in rushing defense, allowing only106.82 yards a contest. The Mustangs also were No. 3 in punt returns and No. 16 in both time ofpossession and sacks allowed. The team finished the 2010 season with national rankings of No.24 in The Sports Network/Fathead.com media poll and No. 23 in the Football ChampionshipSubdivision Coaches Poll.

In 2011 Jackson landed on the All-Great West first team for the fourth time as Cal Poly finished4-1 at home once again en route to a 6-5 campaign. Jackson also earned numerous All-Americanhonors, played in the Senior Bowl and participated in the NFL Scouting Combine. Fullback JakeRomanelli became the first Mustang in five years and the 14th overall to surpass the 1,000-yardmark in rushing yards, finishing with 1,015 yards. .

Last year’s playoff squad was led by FCS All-Americans Deonte Williams and Kennith Jackson.Williams is Cal Poly’s No. 2 rusher all-time for a single season with 1,506 yards, scored 12 touch-downs, was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award and was selected to play in the Casino Del SolAll-Star Game. Jackson finished second in tackles for the fourth straight year with 97 stops andalso intercepted a pair of passes. Both were among the four Mustangs earning first- or second-team All-Big Sky honors. Ten others earned honorable mention praise.

Cal Poly was 5-0 at home and finished No. 1 in the FCS in passing efficiency, No. 3 in rushingoffense, No. 7 in scoring offense, No. 8 in sacks allowed and No. 13 in total offense. The Mustangslost to eventual national runner-up Sam Houston State in the second round of the FCS playoffs.

A Serra High School (San Mateo, Calif.) graduate, Walsh played football at UC Riverside in themid-1970s as a backup quarterback and earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1977.

He began his coaching career at his high school alma mater, Serra, spending four years (1977-80) as an assistant coach before becoming head coach (1981-85) at Moreau Catholic High Schoolin Hayward. Walsh moved into the college coaching ranks in 1986, becoming an assistant coachand defensive coordinator at Santa Clara for one season.

In 1987 and 1988, Walsh was offensive coordinator at Sonoma State before becoming headcoach of the Seawolves (then the Cossacks) in 1989. His first season in Rohnert Park produced a4-6 mark, but Walsh guided Sonoma State to 7-3, 9-2 and 7-3 records in his final three years there.

Walsh embarked upon a 14-year head coaching career at Portland State in 1993, guiding theVikings to NCAA Division II playoff berths each of his first three seasons. Portland State elevatedits athletics program to Division I in 1996 and Walsh guided the Vikings to a quartet of second-place finishes in the Big Sky along with a third and three fourths. In 14 seasons at the helm,Walsh’s Vikings were 62-21 at home.

Walsh, inducted into the halls of fame at both Portland State and Sonoma State, was a finalistfor the Eddie Robinson Award (FCS Coach of the Year) in both 1999 and 2012.

The list of coaches who were assistants under Walsh includes Dan Hawkins (Colorado), GaryPatterson (Texas Christian) and Chris Peterson (Boise State). National Football League playerswho competed under Walsh’s tutelage include -- from Sonoma State -- offensive lineman LarryAllen (Dallas) -- and from Portland State -- tight end Tony Curtis (Dallas), wide receiver ShaunBodiford (Green Bay), linebacker Jordan Senn (Indianapolis) and linebacker Adam Hayward(Tampa Bay).

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- For the second straight year, CalPoly opened its football season against the University of San Diegoand pulled away in the second half for a victory. Coach Tim Walsh's11th-ranked Mustangs, who turned a 20-14 third-quarter lead into a41-14 win in 2012, outscored the Toreros 21-6 in the second half toturn a 17-10 halftime lead into a 38-16 triumph.

Junior slotback Kristaan Ivory scored on runs of 81, 2 and 61yards en route to a career-high 185 yards -– his second 100-yardgame as a Mustang -- while junior wide receiver Willie Tucker caughta career-high seven passes for 113 yards as Cal Poly improved itsseries record against San Diego to 3-0.

In his first college start, Mustang junior quarterback Vince Moragacompleted 15 of 21 passes for 226 yards, the most yards by a CalPoly quarterback in a game since Tony Smith passed for 231 yardsagainst St. Francis (Pa.) on Oct. 30, 2010.

Cal Poly accumulated 533 total yards, 307 of them on the ground,while San Diego gained 394 yards in total offense, 257 through theair. Despite the loss, San Diego held a 19-17 advantage in firstdowns and held the ball 15 more minutes than the Mustangs.

Both turnovers in the game were San Diego fumbles recoveredby Xavier Ramos and Kyle Maddux. The Cal Poly defense alsonotched four sacks, two by senior team captain Sullivan Grosz andone each by Nick Dzubnar and Josh Letuligasenoa.

Ramos led the Mustangs in tackles with 13 and Dzubnar added11. Safety Matt Miller garnered 11 tackles for San Diego.

Ivory gained his career-high 185 yards on just 14 carries for CalPoly. Umoh added 67 yards on six trips while Moraga netted 38yards on nine carries. In addition to Tucker's seven catches, ChrisNicholls had four and Stanford three.

Opening his fifth season as head coach at Cal Poly, Tim Walsh isnow 4-1 in season openers.

FRESNO, Calif. -- Senior wide receiver Isaiah Burse returned twopunts for touchdowns and also caught a scoring pass as FresnoState defeated No. 10 Cal Poly 41-25 in just the second meetingbetween the Central California rivals since the mid-1980s.

Burse returned a Paul Hundley punt 61 yards late in the first quar-ter for his first touchdown. It was the first punt return for a touchdownby an opponent in Tim Walsh's five years as head coach at Cal Poly.

In the second quarter, Burse caught a 15-yard pass from seniorquarterback Derek Carr and returned another Hundley punt 58 yardsfor his third touchdown of the game and a 34-0 Bulldog lead at thebreak.

Carr completed 22 of 31 passes for 205 yards and three touch-downs, one week after connecting on 52 of 73 passes for 456 yardsand five scores in an overtime win over Rutgers.

After a lethargic first half offensively, Cal Poly erupted for 372yards and 25 points after the intermission.

Senior Bobby Zalud's 41-yard field goal less than two minutesinto the third quarter put the Mustangs on the scoreboard. Twelveminutes later, backup quarterback Chris Brown hit Willie Tucker witha seven-yard touchdown pass, trimming Fresno State's lead to 41-10. Brown replaced Mustang starting signal caller Vince Moraga,who suffered a knee injury on the previous Cal Poly drive.

The Mustangs added another score two minutes into the finalperiod on a two-yard run by Brown. An 85-yard, seven-play drivewas capped by a one-yard Brown run to account for the finalMustang points.

The Mustangs finished with a 416-370 advantage in total yards –172 on the ground and 244 through the air. Cal Poly ran off 54 playsin the second half after being held to just 22 plays before the break.

FT. COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State amassed 353 yards and 27points in the first half and held on for a 34-17 victory over No. 14 CalPoly in a non-conference game.

The Rams produced three touchdowns and a pair of field goalsfor a 27-10 advantage at the break.

Cal Poly answered in the third quarter with a 23-yard scoringpass from Chris Brown to Willie Tucker and drove to the Rams' 12-yard line early in the fourth period before a 32-yard Bobby Zalud fieldgoal attempt was blocked by Shaquil Barrett, who also blocked aZalud attempt from 47 yards in the second quarter.

Colorado State sealed Cal Poly's fate with a 68-yard drive afterthe second blocked field goal, scoring on a six-yard pass fromGarrett Grayson to Kivon Cartwright with 4:03 to play in the game.

Grayson completed 21 of 30 passes for 297 yards and two touch-downs.

Brown connected on 11 of 20 passes for 164 yards and the scoreto Tucker. In his first collegiate start, the sophomore quarterbackalso rushed for 61 yards on 14 carries. Tucker was the top Mustangreceiver with three catches for 69 yards. Chris Nicholls and KristaanIvory both had three catches as well.

Cal Poly's only scores of the first half came on a 46-yard field goalby Zalud midway through the first quarter and a 34-yard run byUmoh early in the second quarter which cut Colorado State's lead to13-10.

But Kapri Binns ran one yard for a score and Rashard Higginscaught a 36-yard pass from Grayson as the Rams pulled away in thefinal nine minutes of the first half.

Cal Poly's defense was credited with seven pass breakups,including three by end Andrew Alcaraz and two more by Millard.Millard finished with 13 tackles, one less than Mustang leader NickDzubnar with 14. Alex Hubbard and Cameron Ontko both notched adozen tackles for Cal Poly.

Cal Poly totaled 203 yards rushing and 164 yards passing.

PORTLAND, Oregon – Sophomore quarterback Chris Brownrushed for 129 yards and one touchdown and passed for two morescores as No. 18 Cal Poly rallied from a 21-7 halftime deficit to beatPortland State in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams.

Junior slotback Kristaan Ivory earned his third 100-yard game asa Mustang, rushing for 184 yards on 32 carries and scoring once forCal Poly in the game televised by ROOT Sports.

Portland State averaged mind-boggling statistics of 612 totalyards and 43 points in four non-conference games, but was held to42 yards and no points in a momentum-switching third quarter inwhich the Mustangs scored twice to tie the game at 21-21.

Cal Poly outscored the host Vikings 17-13 in the final period toclinch the win and even the series against Portland State at 10-10.Mustang head coach Tim Walsh, who coached at Portland State for14 seasons, is now 5-0 in the Mustangs-Vikings series – 2-0 asMustang head coach and 3-0 with the Vikings – and also 5-0 after abye week in his five years at Cal Poly.

Portland State compiled 487 total yards and scored 38 points, butwas held largely in check in the second half. Cal Poly has beenoutscored 92-34 in the first half this season but has outscored theopposition 84-33 after the break.

The Mustangs put together scoring drives of 80, 65, 66, 70 and61 yards for touchdowns and 66 yards for a field goal.

Cal Poly ran off a season-high 97 plays and amassed 518 totalyards, including 431 on the ground, while Portland State garnered487 total yards, 302 through the air. The Mustangs compiled a 31-22 advantage in first downs and a 13-minute bulge in time of pos-session.

Ivory's 32 carries are a career high while his 184 yards were oneshy of his career best established in the season opener against SanDiego.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior quarterback Henry Furmanpassed for 199 yards and two touchdowns while junior tailback TylerVarga rushed for 114 yards as Yale rallied from a 10-7 halftime deficitto upset No. 18 Cal Poly in the first-ever matchup of Big Sky vs. IvyLeague football teams.

Senior placekicker Bobby Zalud kicked a 53-yard field goal as thefirst half ended, giving Cal Poly its 10-7 lead at the break. Yale, how-ever, held the Mustangs to just 37 yards on 18 plays in total offense,one first down and zero points in the second half, the first time CalPoly has been held scoreless in the second half since the final gameof the 2010 season, a 22-21 loss to UC Davis.

Cal Poly, which had a six-game home winning streak snapped,last was held to 10 or fewer points in 2010 as well, a 20-7 loss toSouthern Utah in Cedar City, Utah. The Mustangs collected 329yards on 71 plays., but Yale, held to five first downs and 116 yardsin the first half, finished with 357 yards on 77 plays.

Cal Poly sophomore quarterback Chris Brown had career highsof 19 completions and 26 attempts, passing for 104 yards, but hewas intercepted twice, both times by Cole Champion. He also wassacked twice. The Mustangs, who had turned the ball over just twotimes in its first four games this season, committed four turnoversagainst Yale – losing a pair of fumbles.

A third-quarter Cal Poly touchdown on a 67-yard pass fromBrown to Cam Akins was wiped out by an illegal formation penalty.

Mustang junior slotback Kristaan Ivory rushed for 63 yards on 11carries and caught eight passes for 34 yards. Junior wide receiverWillie Tucker made three receptions before suffering an injury in thesecond quarter. He did not return.

Senior linebacker Johnny Millard and junior linebacker CameronOntko each recorded 13 tackles for Cal Poly. Junior linebacker NickDzubnar added 12 stops. Sophomore cornerback Karlton Dennisnabbed Cal Poly's second interception of the season.

Cal Poly had the ball for 19 minutes in the first half and just eightminutes after intermission.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore quarterback DanoGraves, in his first collegiate start, passed for three touchdowns andran for 116 yards to lead Cal Poly over Weber State.

The Mustang defense held the visiting Wildcats to just 173 totalyards -- lowest in Tim Wlash’s five seasons as Cal Poly head coach-- in posting its first shutout in seven years.

Graves, who averaged 6.8 yards per carry, rushed 17 times andcompleted 13 of 16 passes for 169 yards. His scoring passes wereto Kristaan Ivory for six yards, Cole Stanford for 14 yards andAkaninyene Umoh for 38 yards.

Ivory earned his third 100-yard game of the season and fourth ofhis career, rushing for exactly 100 yards on 18 trips. He scored twiceon the ground covering three and five yards in addition to his touch-down reception.

Brandon Howe ran one yard for a third-quarter touchdown andfullback Matt Rulon capped Cal Poly's scoring with a two-yard runwith five minutes to play.

Weber State drove into Cal Poly territory just twice in the game,marching to the 36-yard line before a first-quarter punt and to theMustang 21 as time expired.

Cal Poly compiled advantages of 29-10 in first downs, 580-173 intotal yards and 31:23 to 28:37 in time of possession. Weber Stateconverted just four of 16 third-down plays and punted 10 times.

Wildcat quarterback Austin Chipoletti completed 16 of 23 passesfor 115 yards. Erik Walker had eight catches for 55 yards.

Linebacker Nick Dzubnar led all Cal Poly tacklers with nine andCameron Ontko added seven. Roman Valenzuela, Adam Padilla andChris Jones each recorded 13 tackles for Weber State.

Cal Poly produced a pair of 100-yard rushers in a game for thesecond time this season -– Ivory and Chris Brown cracked the 100-yard mark against Portland State -– and for the fifth time in the lastthree seasons.

MISSOULA, Mont. – Jordan Johnson threw a pair of touchdownpasses, one with 12 seconds left to tie the game and the other onthe second play of overtime, to lead Montana over Cal Poly.

Montana drove 88 yards in the final two minutes of regulation totie the game after a Cal Poly field goal attempt of 26 yards by BobbyZalud was blocked. Johnson completed 10 of 14 passes on thegame-tying drive and hit Clay Pierson with a two-yard pass for thetouchdown on fourth-and-goal.

Cal Poly elected to go on defense in overtime and, on the secondplay, Montana scored on a 23-yard pass from Johnson to EllisHenderson.

Cal Poly netted zero yards on its first two plays of overtime beforeDano Graves was intercepted at the goalline on third down by BrockCoyle, ending the game.

Cal Poly dominated the first three quarters, holding Montana toeight first downs and 146 total yards. Johnson had completed justseven of 16 passes for 85 yards in the first three quarters and theMontana running game netted just 61 yards.

But the Grizzlies moved the ball well when it counted in the finalperiod, marching 88 yards for the tying score to set up the overtime.

The Cal Poly defense kept Montana out of the end zone much ofthe game. Before their final scoring drive, the Grizzlies moved theball deep into Cal Poly territory three times in the second half only toturn the ball over -- twice on downs and once on a Johnson fumbleat the Mustang one-yard line that went for a touchback.

Mustang junior slotback Kristaan Ivory rushed for 121 yards on 22carries, his fourth 100-yard game of the season, while Graves added91 yards on 14 trips. Graves completed 13 of 18 passes for 95 yardsand Ivory was his favorite target with six catches for 36 yards.

Cal Poly compiled a 403-315 advantage in total offense, 23-17 infirst downs and had the ball for 13 more minutes than Montana.

The Grizzlies entered the game averaging 474 yards in totaloffense and scoring almost 41 points a contest.

Both Cal Poly scores were recorded by senior fullbackAkaninyene Umoh in the first half covering six and four yards.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Marcus Alford's 96-yard kickoffreturn for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter lifted No. 16/19Northern Arizona over Cal Poly in a Big Sky Conference game.

Cal Poly had taken a 13-10 lead on a 22-yard field goal by BobbyZalud on the first play of the final period before Alford gave the vis-iting Lumberjacks the lead for good with his kickoff return. Cal Polygot the ball back four times, but was forced to punt twice, turned theball over on downs at the Northern Arizona 35 as quarterback DanoGraves was stopped for a two-yard loss by Ryan Reardon, and theMustangs were intercepted by Austin Hasquet with 2:04 to play.

The Lumberjacks secured one first down and ran out the clock toimprove to 6-2 on the year and 4-1 in Big Sky games, alone in thirdplace and a half-game behind Eastern Washington and MontanaState, both 4-0 after victories Saturday.

Cal Poly is now 1-9 in its series with Northern Arizona. TheMustangs beat the Lumberjacks 42-34 in the regular season finale ayear ago in Flagstaff to clinch a share of the Big Sky title and aFootball Championship Subdivision playoff berth.

Despite the loss, Cal Poly compiled advantages of 19-16 in firstdowns, 352 to 277 in total offense and two minutes in time of pos-session. In three of the Mustangs' five losses this season, Cal Polyhad more yards, first downs and possession time than the opponent.

Cal Poly also won the turnover battle Saturday, 4-2, with twointerceptions and a pair of fumble recoveries. Northern Arizona had13 takeaways in its first seven games this season.

Northern Arizona running back Zach Bauman, bidding to be theninth player in Football Championship Subdivision history to rush for1,000 or more yards in four consecutive seasons, rushed for 91yards on 24 carries Saturday and is 25 yards shy of the 1,000-yardmark with at least three games remaining in his senior season.

Dano Graves was Cal Poly’s top rusher with 86 yards on 18 car-ries. Nicholls added 73 yards on nine trips, scoring the lone Mustangtouchdown of the game on a 33-yard reverse. Graves completed 11of 22 passes for 115 yards, with Cole Stanford his favorite target,catching four passes for 66 yards.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior slotback Deonte Williamsrushed for 188 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns asCal Poly, playing its inaugural Big Sky Conference football game,defeated UC Davis in the Battle for the Golden Horseshoe.

Williams scored on runs of 5, 14 and 7 yards as Coach TimWalsh's Mustangs erased an early 10-0 deficit, built a 28-10 advan-tage midway through the third quarter and held on for their thirdstraight victory. UC Davis had won three straight games against CalPoly.

After falling behind 10-0 in the first 10 minutes, Cal Poly scored28 points in a row to turn it around. Mustang junior fullbackAkaninyene Umoh broke off a 51-yard scoring run in the first quar-ter, Williams' five-yard run midway through the second quarter gaveCal Poly a 14-10 advantage and Williams scored his other twotouchdowns in the third quarter, a 14-yarder with 13:41 to play to capa quick 85-yard, four-play drive and a seven-yarder with 5:13remaining in the period.

In the fourth quarter, the Aggies drove 97 yards in 14 plays, scor-ing on a two-yard run by Courtney Williams with 10:10 to play, andBrady Stuart added a 41-yard field goal with 5:45 to play.

Cal Poly picked up one first down before punting the ball back toUC Davis with 2:34 to play. Wright drove the Aggies 12 yards to their35-yard line before he threw four incomplete passes. Cal Polyclosed out the game with three kneel downs.

Umoh finished with 87 yards on 12 carries with one score as CalPoly amassed a 336-84 advantage in yards rushing and a 434-362edge in total offense. The Mustangs rushed for 323 yards againstSan Diego in their season opener Sept. 1 and added 325 yards inthe win over Wyoming on Sept. 15.

Only turnover of the game was an interception by Cal Poly seniorcornerback Nico Molino in the second quarter.
