Welcome to Graduate Education at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Our primary goal is to provide an opportunity for students to extend their undergraduate learning through offering masters, certificate and credential programs. Embracing our polytechnic foundation, our programs integrate the advancement of knowledge as well as the practical implementation skills required for students to enter the workforce ready to immediately provide value in their professional careers.

In addition, our graduate programs support the teacher-scholar model embraced by Cal Poly and allow faculty to balance their commitment to teaching along with their interests in basic and applied research. We strive to balance the process of discovery and practical applications through hands-on experiences and partnerships with industry cohorts. We desire to extend the community we serve beyond California and explore opportunities to craft study programs that meet the needs of our national and international citizens. There are over 40 graduate master’s programs outlined in this catalog, organized by the Colleges that support the degrees offered.

Our graduate programs embrace intellectual entrepreneurship, bringing ideas and people together in a synergistic way that enables us to develop students who are citizen-scholars and faculty who are teacher-scholars. Entrepreneurship encourages risk taking within the scientific discovery process; it embraces both knowing and creative doing which enables us to bring ideas and people together to create change. I believe that giving our students the opportunity to participate in multi-disciplinary learning experiences will promote integrative thinking and social responsibility, which are critical skills necessary to solve the global problems our society faces today.

It offers a holistic approach to data analytics, combining qualitative reasoning with quantitative tools to identify key business problems, translate them into relevant data questions, and apply data analytics while telling a story and proposing concrete business actions. Students will have the opportunity to work with industry partners and use real data to synthesize ideas and techniques learned in the program. With exposure to analytics in a business setting, graduates will also be able to serve as a critical link among senior management, data scientists, and clients.

M.S. in EconomicsThe Master of Science in Economics is a full-time, 45 quarter-unit program designed to provide advanced preparation in economics for individuals desiring careers as economists in the business, financial, academic, and governmental sectors. The focus of the program is on data analysis and quantitative methods in economics. The program provides the technical skills required to engage in quantitative economic analyses that involve forecasting, market assessment, economic feasibility studies, commodity pricing and data analysis. It is comprised of a core curriculum of quantitative coursework that emphasizes a methodological approach to the analysis of market data through the application of calculus and statistical techniques. Students will learn how quantitative economic methods, including applied microeconomic theory, applied econometrics, numerical methods and simulation can be used for the successful study of economic problems.

Upon completion of the degree, students will have a solid foundation in econometrics and applied microeconomics and will be well prepared for jobs in the private or public sector involving data analysis or other quantitative methods. The program could also be useful for those intending to enter a Ph.D. program.

MBA/M.S. in Engineering ManagementThe Engineering Management Program, concurrent degree (EMP), is an interdisciplinary program linking the MBA with an M.S. in Engineering Management. It is a cooperative effort between the Orfalea College of Business and the Cal Poly College of Engineering (Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department). This concurrent degree option is inspired by the world in which our students will ultimately work—a world in which no one works alone or in just one discipline, and in which it is imperative to understand and master a variety of skills. Our strategy is to encourage cross-disciplinary learning that fits the many paths future business leaders may pursue; from engineering, science and computer science to sociology, economics, environmental policy, architecture, agricultural politics, and more.

ACADEMIC GRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

Academic Graduate Certificate programs are designed to pro-vide a specialized area of study that meets the requirements for professional competence and to expand access to specialized knowledge. The programs are typically designed for working professionals who are seeking to advance their career oppor-tunities by obtaining specialized knowledge in their current field or in a new field.

Fire Protection EngineeringThere are two graduate certificates offered in Fire Protection Engineering (FPE). The FPE Science certificate highlights the science and engineering principles of fire protection engineering, including thermal sciences and flammability characteristics of different materials. Alternatively, the FPE Applications certificate emphasizes the fire service aspect of the industry, including courses that identify fire safety codes and regulations, understanding evacuation models, and information about fire detection and alarm systems. Cal Poly’s FPE graduate programs are the first to be located on the West Coast. One goal of this program is to help fill the increasing demand for fire protection engineers, particularly in California and the western states, where the lack of educational programs in FPE has resulted in a shortage.

Printed Electronics & Functional ImagingThe professional certificate in Printed Electronics and Functional Imaging is a course of study leading to advanced knowledge of electronic or functional applications incorporating the use of various printing and coating technologies. This online program provides education in the design and deployment side of mass-scale manufacturing of functional printing components and products. Students completing the certificate will learn about mass-produced printed electronics, active packaging, and security printing including equipment needs, required environmental conditions, process control techniques, and specification requirements. Additionally, certificate holders will understand product development models, business models, and funding resources for companies in these disciplines. The graduate certificate may be used to matriculate with the M.S. in Printed Electronics and Functional Imaging, though a separate application process will be required for the master’s degree.

Systems Integration EngineeringThe goal of this distance learning professional certificate is to educate working engineers with a technical, systems-level awareness of the structure, challenges, pitfalls and opportunities of integrating the diverse, multidisciplinary nature of complex, man-made systems. Systems integration is the bringing together of the component subsystems into one system and ensuring that they function together as a whole. Complexity continues to increase in man-made systems. New systems, products and services require continually more effort to design, develop, operate and support. Systems integration is a core competency for organizations designing, building, operating and maintaining systems.
