Academic Writing and EPT Requirement

Written communication is a critical component to the academic community.

Much of the communication amongst scholars occurs through writing. One of the most important characteristic of written communication is that once one communicates with written words, the words cannot be taken back.

Therefore it is critical for one's writing skills to the extent that one can communicate effectively and clearly get one’s point across with written words.

Clearing English Placement Test (EPT) requirement

The EPT can be cleared in the following ways:– EPT score: 151 or above – passed!

Still must take GEW for graduation requirement– Exempt from EPT if:

Verbal SAT score is 550 or above English ACT score is 24 or above AP Language core is 3, 4, 5

– EPT Score below 151- you must take 1 class preferably in 1st semester ( GEW 101 )

A grade of “C” or better must be earned in GEW 101

The writing center at CSUSM offers a place for students from all disciplines and majors to get feed back on their writing from highly trained writing specialist

In addition to supporting student writers across campus, the writing center also provides a valuable experience for students interested in becoming consultant

Quantitative Reasoning & the ELM Requirement

Quantities literacy is another skill that is critical to one’s functioning within society in both individual and social contexts.

In an age where numbers are used to determine credit, present happenings in the economy, and explain various social phenomena, quantitative literacy can allow one to make well informed major life decisions and provide the ability to develop one’s own conclusions when presented with information.

Clearing the Entry Level Mathematics( ELM) Requirement

The ELM requirement can be cleared in any one the following ways:

– ELM Score: 50 or above – ELM Cleared.

– Exempt from ELM if: Math SAT score is 550 or higher Math ACT score is 23 or higher AP Math Exam score is 3,4, or 5

– ELM Score: 40-48 You must take math 051 in first semester

– ELM Score: 30-38 You must take 2 classes in 1st & 2nd semester

Math 50 in first semester Math 51 in second semester

Students can successfully clear the ELM requirement with the following strategies:– Attend these classes every day and take

them very seriously.– Seek help at the very first signs of

difficulty and develop strategies to address them right away

Visit the Math Lab for free tutoring Connect with fellow students in the class who

are performing well and from study groups

The math Lab provides academic support, tutoring, and assistance to undergraduate students at CSUM who are taking math courses or fulfilling general education requirements in mathematics.

Computer Competency Requirement (CCR)

The Computer Competency Requirement ( CCR) at CSUSM for all baccalaureate students, irrespective of major. The requirement states that a student must demonstrate basic competency in the following areas:– An understanding of software-ethics issues

and concerns in today’s society, and an understanding of virus protection and prevention.

– An understanding of Internet: browsers, and email

– Proficiency in Basic Word Processing– Reference footnotes– Proficiency in Basic Spreadsheet Concepts

Clearing the computer Competency Requirement ( CCR)

The CCR can be fulfilled in any one of the following ways:

Passing the CCR Exam Taking and passing computer Science

(CS) 100 Taking and passing a CCR equivalent

Personal Wellness first Year requirements

First Year student Alcohol Education requirement.– As part of our campus wellness education

efforts, CSUSM requires all of our incoming first year students to complete MystudentBody.com and online alcohol education and prevention program.

– When can I start? You may access MyStudentBody.com at any

time following your Summer 2008 orientation session.

– What is the deadline? You must complete and pass the requirement

with at least 70% correct by Friday October 31, 2008.

– What if I don’t Fulfill the Requirement by Deadline?

A hold will be placed on your record and you will not be able to register foe fall 2009 classes.

Immunization Requirements

For all New CSUSM students, California state university higher education system has mandated that new students born after January 1, 1957 must demonstrate proof of full immunization to Measles and Rubella.

Students have one semester to comply or they will not be permitted to register for a second semester. Registration holds are placed if proof of immunization has not been submitted to SHCS prior to priority registration date

Options to fulfill Immunization

Get Written Proof of Immunity from their Physician. Students must have the immunization .– After January 1, 1968 or– After their first birthday.

Students can also provide a copy of a laboratory test indicating that students are immune to measles and rubella.

Provide proof of immunity to Student Health & Counseling Services. – Students may also submit proof that they

have been immunized against measles and rubella with two doses of MMR in the following ways:

Students who don’t have proof of immunity to MMR– Can make appointment at CSUSM Vaccine

Clinic to receive Measles/rubella or MMR vaccination or make an appointment for an MMR titer blood test to check for immunity level for Measles and rubella.

All student who are 18 years or younger, on August 1st of their entering academic year, are require to present the proof of Full Immunization against Hepatitis B. To fulfill this requirement: Step 1: Get written proof of immunity

Students must submit proof of full immunization to hepatitis B. Full immunization consist of three (3) injections for hepatitis B that are given over a 4-6 month period. If students need to start or finish the hepatitis B series, students can call Student HEALTH and Counseling Services to schedule an appointment.

Planning for the Language other than English Requirement(LOTER)

Why have a LOTER?– CSUSM believes strongly in preparing its

students for the demands of a diverse and globalizing world. So every student regardless of major and before graduation must demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English.

To prevent a delay in graduating, do not wait until senior year!

What are my options?– Approved College level 201 or higher at

(CSUM), Intermediate Level language course ( include Study abroad)

– CSUM proficiency exam. Cost $49.50– Advanced placement ( AP) Foreign

Language Exam. If you got 3 or higher.– TOEFL or other CSUSM Approved English

Exam– CSUSM Challenge Exam.

– College- Level Examination Program ( CLEP). A French level II score of 47, a German level II 48, or a Spanish Level II 50 meets the requirement. This option does not give units.

– International Baccalaureate ( IB) Examination. If you got a 4 or higher on a higher level foreign Language exam, you receive units and met the requirement

– Completion of at least three years full-time study at a high school or university where English was not principal language on instruction.
