Calamities such as typhoons, storms, tsunamis and etc. are often associated with death,
tragedy, destruction and economic decline; particularly, when it is seen with an uneducated eye
of a typical individual. But when all cultural biases are set aside and sociological imagination is
applied, there are numerous positive effects that reveal themselves as an eye opener .
Taken for example is the calamity that previously hit the Philippines, particularly in
indanao. ! for one think that it is the "Theory of #atural $election% at work, where survival of
the fittest is the only rule. &oing into details, there are '() seven specific effects that #atural
$election caused which are desirable to our society and helpful to tour environment. '*) +ne is
the minor reduction of our population. ost people would think that this is uite foolish, since to
obtain it, hundreds of lives needed to be taken away. But when we ponder thoroughly, it is an
immense help to humankind and it would somehow be a temporary solution to overpopulation ,
which would lead me to '-) number two /limination of social groups that were no longer fit to
exist in the society. !n this case would be the populace that are considered to be below the
poverty line. Cruel as it may sound, but it is the blunt truth. They are obviously unfit to the
society because, when seen with the lens of economics, investors mostly look at a country that
would surely double or triple their money0s worth. 1nd principally, fewer countries would be
interested at a nation that has a huge number of underprivileged people, as it drags down the
economic worth of a country. !n relation to the decline of population is also the '2) decrease of
the working force. !t gives the opportunity to give 3obs to those who are the more deserving and
competent division of the masses. This is well connected to second idea which is eradicating
the less fitting members of society. 1nd not only does it give more 3obs, but the idea of wiping
out those who do not deserve the 3ob anymore, is giving a small light of hope that the next
people in line to get the occupation would do a better 3ob of handling the work to be done . '4)
5ue to the destruction that the typhoon has left in some areas, fewer tourists would be
interested to visit the place where Pablo has left ruins. !t would give a chance to other vacation
hotspots in the Philippines to be discovered. To sum it up, the first four effects are all very
constructive when linked to our country, since economic development is what our country
urgently needs. '6) 7hen looked at biologically, there are facts that state that when there is a

lack of visiting typhoons, we will surely experience drought. The uantity of rainfall that these
typhoons carry is already sufficient to replenish the rivers, irrigations for crops, dams and other
water streams that provide potable water and power source. Typhoons can also cleanse the
pollution in the atmosphere. '8) 7hile using the looking lens of theology, the calamity helped
people who were lost, turn back and seek &od0s grace. This greatly affects the society during
the aftermath of the disaster . Those who survived that are financially blesses than the others will
become the blessing of those who are left empty handed after the calamity . '() 1nd in the sense
of survival of the fittest, Pablo served as a warning to the "superior% 'white collared 3obbed,
degree holders and the elite) people who lived in the metropolis that 5avao City is not typhoon9
safe anymore, causing them to possibly migrate or transfer to a safer city in the nation.
!n conclusion, every action has an opposite, unexpected, and positive reaction. /ven
when the cause was hundreds of deaths or massive, nationwide destruction, there will always
be a reaction to counter it; and it will surely be for the better of the society. Population
elimination is the number one weapon of natural selection, for everything created in this world
has a purpose, but not each and everyone0s purpose is essential to the evolution or growth of
the society. $o the eradication of a certain ineffective populace will open more possibilities to
future possible successful generations that will replace them.
