Caldy Cricket Club Year End 30thSeptember 2013

    Treasurers Report.

My second year as Caldy Cricket Club Treasurer has been as challenging, and

    frustrating as the first one.

The Club ended the year in credit, and showed a small trading profit for the year of

697.73. However, this is before the payment of the Levy agreed with the parent club.

This year saw more expenditure that was budgeted for, specifically the expenses paid

out in respect of our overseas amateur Jerome Groot, and our local professional

Haroon Khan. The sections Leadership Team really has to look long and hard at thesustainability of this for future years.

The main income streams for the Club of course are Subs, Donations & Sponsorship.

Donations were down again this year, despite the fixture cards being printed and sent

to all. This was perceived to be the reason last years donations were lower than

previously. I personally think that in the current financial climate, payments like this

will diminish, and previous reliance on this income stream cannot be continued.

Sponsorship payments were significantly down on last year, mainly due to thecontinued non payment by the clubs main sponsor. I do anticipate this income being

received over the next few months, and the Chairman is in constant contact with them, but more work must be done to secure more repeatable income on this front.

Subscriptions has not been the cause of major concern this year, and my thanks goes

out to all the captains for ensuring that all their players paid up. Saying that, our

playing membership has declined in the 2013 season with the club being forced to

cancel a few fixtures. If any of you know of friends or family who wish to have a run

out, please feel free to introduce them into the club. We will have indoor nets sessions

in the new year, and new members are always welcome.

It is vital that the players realise why the Annual Subscription is payable. Not onlydoes this pay for the day to day running of the club, but you are not covered by the

Clubs Insurance policy if you are not a paid up member.

I would like to extend my thanks to Don for his tireless work collecting the Tea

Money from the captains and making sure Amanda is paid.

The section is required to pay a levy to the Caldy Sports and Social Club Ltd based on

its playing membership. This levy is 40 per member. However, the Chairman & Ihave managed to agree with the Management Boards of both CSCL and the Rugby

section that our contribution is implemented in stages over the next 3 years. To enable

the club to honour this agreement, I am increasing the 2014 Annual Subscription for

Seniors to 130; Students, Juniors above U11 and concessions to 70 and Junior U9

    to 50

The Net fund account grew again, this time due to a club member providing the club

with a loan of 10,000. This extra money has enabled the club to confirm to the grant

organisers that we had a sufficient balance for us to be given the grant for the new Netsystem that we now see completed.

The Club still need to focus its fund raising efforts on increasing this fund, as care &maintenance of these Nets will be required & proper planning & preparation is

required to prevent a poor performance in this regard.

It is disappointing to note that only the 1stXI organised any fundraising evenings

during the season. The Captains must get together over the winter and discuss what

each playing side can contribute to the fundraising for the Club.

Small regular contributions are easier to organise than 1 major function that takes

months of planning, but the Committee really need to decide whether a few willingand determined volunteers can organise a spectacular that will really dominate our

fundraising efforts for the 2014 season. Any thoughts are welcome on this subject, assometimes people are reticent about voicing ideas for the club in the fear that they

may be ridiculed or belittled, but sometimes, those ideas, with a little time and effort

    can turn into grand occasions.

My final thanks goes out to all who have contributed to the club this year. We

couldnt have done it without you.

    Stewart Pilley

There is probably not much more I can add to the above as they do always say that stats

dont lie! I have searched long and hard for excuses for our league finish and to try anddefend myself and my players but plain and simple truth is that we finished second from

bottom (and in not a particularly strong league) on merit. We were over 190 points off the champions Sefton Park, who were a class side but not the

unbeatable superstars that we made them look like and we didnt register a single win

against any of the top six sides. I cant criticise any of the efforts of my players on the pitch,

it was off the pitch where the problems lie. Commitment, confidence and responsibility

were all severely lacking this year in particular to availability to play (numerous and regular

last minute cry offs) and training was virtually non-existent. A lot of players quite readily

used the excuse that we had no facilities to train but we had a grass track every week with (a

new) mobile net and a brand new artificial track to use. Most Thursday nights it was the

regular few and very unproductive. No-one at any level in any sport is good enough to just

turn up on matchday without putting any effort of preparation the week or so before but we

assume that we all are obviously not! No excuses next year boys.

Thirty fourplayers were used this year with four/five making their debuts; its not a

coincidence that the promoted and most successful team only used half this number of

players all season. This is a regular problem at Caldy, we are basically just lacking playing

numbers, I think we only have something like 28 adult players members in the whole of the

    club!

It didnt get much better in the cup competitions either. First up, we travelled to deepestdarkest Bolton (or Wigan!) for an ECB T20 Sunday game which somehow turned out to

actually be a 45over game the least said about this game the better! We had to forfeit the

Cheshire Cup due to only having three players willing to play. We managed to take a team

away to Tattenhall in the Village Cup (a cup which we have a proud and successful history

in) but we only fielded three first team players and the game didnt make it to tea! We did

have some success in the T20 cups, wins against Irby and Alder, we gave Bootle a scare attheir place and we didnt roll over against Chester BH (backed by their Russian billionaire!).

We convincing lost two out of three games in the pre season Ray Digman knockout (again

with severely weakened teams) but we did produce one of our best all round teamperformance of a good few years against 1

stDivision Wigan away, we outplayed them in

every department and walked away with a massive win.

Batting wise, only eight players only actually scored over 100+ league runs and the bowling

makes worse reading with only three players taking 20+ wickets (the highest been 25!)

Anyway, I dont like to dwell too long on all the positives from the seasonbut therewere plenty to take away. For one, I felt like I actually had the best squad of players at my

disposal for probably 9-10years. I had experience, proven talent, potential talent and a few

who just wanted to be part of the first team no matter what. I did an early piece in theLiverpool Echo (and still stand by that), and I took a hell of a lot of stick from certain people

and twitter accounts but I backed us all the way to the very last game. I honestly think if we

can keep this squad together, along with the odd new recruit, proper structured training

    14/32

sessions and more commitment to actually playing, we will have a very successful year next

    year.

We did welcome back Haroon Khan this year (after he deserted us to go and get Birkenhead

Park promoted!) and introduced a young Kiwi all rounder (he was certainly a lot rounder

when he left us) Jerome Groot (aka Jermaine Goat). We also recruited a wicket-keeper/toporder batsman but he wont be getting any mentions as he deserted us half way through the

campaign! The most significant new signing this year was our new scorer, The Lovely

Stacey (and her two famous soap actor friends!) It was a pleasure to have her..as part

    of the team.

I would love to be rolling off a couple of pages of individual achievements now but as

youve have seen from the stats it slim pickings. Haroon was leading run scorer by some

distance with outstanding performance against Old Xavs at home (89), Spring View away(81), Skem at home (50), Alder at home (67 in a 135 partnership with Andy Potter to win us

the game), Old Xavs away (88) and Wavertree Home (5-45). He also chipped in with hisnewly found mystery spin (a bowling style which I sure he is more comfortable with and

doesnt involve much physical exertion!) For me this year, Haroon made himself more part

of the team and a lot of us are now proud to call him a mate and not just someone who turns

up on a sat to play cricket and then bugger off. I am hoping and confident that he will be

with us for a good few years to come. Chris Edwards had a few contributions of note,

mainly his 5-39 (and 49 runs) against Alder which included a brilliant hat trick (im sure ourlovely scorer would be more than willing to talk any of you through his achievement and

indeed his reward!). A couple of decent knocks against Sutton at Home (64) and Old Xavs

away (57) but Chris will be the first to admit that he hasnt performed this season as well ashe could have. He is a massive player for us and will be for a long time to come, im

confident that this season will be his worst for a long time.

The Kearndog started the season in confident fashion with a match winning knock of 60no

against Wigan, followed up by 56 against Prestatyn at home but struggled for runs (notconfidence) for the rest of the season. A player I never ever considered dropping to the 2s as

he offers so much enthusiasm and positivity to any situation (apart from Wavertree away!).

If certain players had 5% of his confidence, they would be amazed at what they could

actually achieve on an off the field (or in the Grange!) Al Stewart regained the gloves and

had one of his best seasons, again struggled for consistency with the bat but had a couple ofdecent 43s against Old Xavs and Prestatyn. He did hit probably one of the biggest straight

sixes I have ever seen at Bootle away. Their players said he was something like only the

fourth player ever in their history to clear the houses at Wadham Road and by somedistance!

Andy Potter missed a lot of cricket and subsequently struggled for form, a magnificent

knock against Alder at Home of 73 been the highlight, he was however out to the worst shot

of the season but nonetheless set us up for an easy win (chasing 220+).

Joe Poste made a few more appearance this season but only frustrated his adoring public by

showing what he can be capable of and then getting out! He had starts against Spring

View away (40), Wavertree away (43no) and St Helens Town away (47). Joe and we all

know he has big scores in him, he just needs to taking his time and stay at the crease. If Joebats through for any length of time, he will score heavy runs. His spin bowling is more than

useful, just need to gain more confidence and this will only come through hard training and

matches. Postie is like a huge number of this squad, they can be as good as they actually

want to be, they just need to put a few hard yards in.

Oli Higgs made a few appearances but promoting him to opener (his natural position as I see

it) against Spring View at Home (40 in not a total of much more) was a success albeit the

one game but in this one game he showed what he can do and what he will do in many years

to come.Jerome Groot had an up and down year, a few successes with the ball in hand but made more

progress throughout the season with the bat. A hugely likeable lad all round and I would

have no hesitation in welcoming him back next year if circumstances prevail. I would

however, strongly recommend that he is kept away from electrical items such as hedge

    trimmers and the like!

Other mentions of note must go out to the evergreen Davy K, one of the first names down on

my teamsheets. There is nothing I can say about him that I have in previous years, clublegend. Mr Pilley as always gave me 110% and so nearly won us the match at home against

Skem with his mammoth effort of 6-84 off a straight 25overs. He is not everyones cup oftea but a wholehearted and genuine bloke who only wants to play to win (on and off the

field!). There are numerous players that ive not mentioned but im extremely grateful to each

and everyone of them who have turned out and gave it their all.

A final mention is for young Harry (HJDK), only played a handful of games but settled

straight into the team and has never looked out of place. He calmly knocked off the winning

runs away at Alder when wickets were tumbling, made the initial breakthrough againstSefton Park at Home when they were struggling at 269-0 and was ever so close to a hat trick

at the marys with the ball just trickling back past the stumps. But for me it was his general

attitude that stood out above all else. He wanted to be playing 1st

team cricket, he wanted tobe pushing himself to play as high as possible, he never said no when asked to have a go

with the bowl (refer to the Sefton Park game!) and is happy to bat anywhere between 1 and

    11. That attitude has long been forgotten at this club with people happy to play at lower

levels so they can be comfortable or to just play with their mates. We have a very good cropof young players developing and they need to be encouraged to push and progress

themselves to want to be playing at the highest level possible.

We did have some success in playing Last Man Stands cricket, comprehensively winning the

regional final and progressing to play in the world finals in London. Im sure it wouldnt taketoo much encouragement to get Paul Kearney up to talk you all through it all at the awards

night! Great experience by all though and some actual silverware for the cabinet!

I would personally like to say massive thank yous to Stacey for everything she has had to

put up with, Amanda for her services to tea making, all the committee and captains for their

help, support and guidance over the year, the mrs for still been there, Abigail Battersby for

been our No.1 Supporter for the whole season and for all the lads who made the effort to

turn out and compete. Also to Paul Kearney for his now regular and ever popular race nights

(these been one of only a few social events we managed to organise this year!).

A huge mention must go to all the committee for their unseen and unsung works that

continue 12mths of the year and in particular to the Chairman Dave Brown who hassignificantly contributed a huge amount of time and effort in securing our new netting

facilities, without him (and Mike Ruddock) we simply wouldnt have them in place at all.

One thank you that is missing this year is for Sir Reg Walker, its been a strange old season

without the great mans pre & post match reports (criticisms) and he is greatly missed by all.

Finally, from a personal point of view this has been my worst ever playing season at Caldy

CC, this coupled with our lack of results, position in the table and lack of progression it has

left me contemplating whether I should put myself forward to carry on as captain. I

wholeheartedly take responsibility for our lack of performances and league finish and would

be prepared to step aside if a suitable candidate was willing to step up and take the reins.Discussions for post season and AGMBut whatever happens next season, we all need

to be fully focus on structured intense training sessions, levels of commitment/availability,

taking individual responsibility on the field and increasing the number social events

throughout the year. These dont all have to be money raising nights (I can hear the treasury

tutting away) but just general club events to have a laugh and take the proverbial out of each

other. We have a great atmosphere in this club where all teams interact and get on (and trust

me a lot of clubs dont have this!) and we should keep encouraging this for many years tocome.

    Regards,

    Rich Batts.

Caldy Cricket Club 3rdXI End of Season Report

A much changed line-up of captains began the season at 2nd, 3rdand 4thXIlevels within the club and it was my opportunity to captain a side that on paperhad all the credentials to be promotion candidates. The season would prove

to be a tough one the league itself, strengthened by the parachuting in fromthe Merseyside Cricket Competition of Goodlass CC and MCCC in addition tothe relegation Liverpool Cricket Clubs 3

rdXI, already had been difficult to get

promotion out of. When the season ended the top five teams had managed toexceed 300 points during the 2012 season that would have seen a side winthe league, our total of 253 was a respectable one and one we can build onnext season.

As is usually the case, the top performances of the key performers in the 2012season saw themselves progress into the 2ndXI with both Nathaniel Alsopand Julian Higgs seeing the whole of their 2013 seasons in 2s it was on tothe younger members of the side to put totals up that bowlers could defend. The team was also in need of finding a new wicket keeper due to Ty Adamsdeserving promotion to the twos and a new spin bowling option with BazChandrasekar also making the step up.

The season started in the worst possible sense, not only did the 3s manageto lose their first game it was to much delight of the newly appointed 4

    thXI

skipper Mark Downes that the fours turned over the 3s in a game that wouldsee its return fixture at the end of the season it was hoped that we would beable to make some early inroads and set ourselves on the road to promotion, our first 12 games would prove to be a baptism of fire for what became a very

young side, of those 12 only two wins and 3 draws where possible. This reallymeant that promotion was never in the offing however the performances and

  • 7/27/2019 Caldy Cc Reports 2013

    21/32

response of individuals during the second half of the season meant that thelast 10 games of the season saw 6 wins, one draw and two losses with justthe one game lost to weather, a response that showed the team wasbeginning to learn how to play together and young players finding their rolewithin the side had become the platform for success, there were some

contributions at different points throughout the year and putting these togethermore consistently will allow the side to be competive in a promotion pushduring the 2014 season.

    Batting

While there where some outstanding performances, on the whole the sideonly managed to post 200 on three occasions, this often aided the skippersreluctance to call correctly and bat first and it will need to be a point toimprove on during the following season, netting often and learning to build aninnings will be the key to the teams success.

Perhaps the most remarkable turnaround from last season was from JimBarnard, a step into the fours to find his form and play with son Leon sparkeda revival of form for the man always first to the tea table, in just 6 inningstoward the end of the season for 3s Jim showed that having a horrific

technique is no hindrance scored over 150 runs at a touch over 30, if Jim cancontinue that form and continue to develop his tea etiquette he will be keyelement of a successful 3rdXI.

There where notable contributions throughout the season from variousplayers, Adi Varma has shown further promise at the top of the order, showingboth flair and application which will see him build some big scores throughout2014 he provides the perfect foil for Chandra Chandrasekar who, ever theaggressor managed nearly 200 runs at 37.5 at the top of the order, thewrestle to keep Chandra playing more often than not is key to the 3s success,in fact two of the sides highest score belong to Chandra, he is aggressive and

knows his game well, it is the job of the rest of the side to ensure his goodstarts are put into big totals.

  • 7/27/2019 Caldy Cc Reports 2013

    22/32

Contributions throughout the team have come from some unexpected areasas well, Dave Brown made a couple of contributions they promised so muchbut unfortunately the chairmans liking of a drink on a Friday night have costhim some more telling contributions, a couple of cameos with the bat from

both Russ Smith and Kieran Lowe where exciting to watch, if the later wherenot a little leg side. Nick Schneider made some key contributions down theorder but his unfortunate ability to continually get out to slow bowling costhim dearly. George Free will be looking at the 2014 season as an opportunityto build on starts he got during 2013 and he is a pleasure to have in the clubalways willing to take the step up for the 1stor 2ndXI, without players like himwe would struggle to put sides out.

Young Alex Risk has stepped into adult cricket and taken to it like a duck towater, he works hard on his game and has a late cut that Sir Reg would beproud of, he is ably supported in the lower middle order by a man four times

his age, but someone who has worked equally as hard on his game, DaveWylde has contributed on large scale this season with the bat and hasbecome somewhat of an all-rounder. Perhaps the most surprising contributionto the batting was that of the specialist tea watchman Ant Olsson, onlyrequired for two innings of the four games he played Ants 41* twice hisprevious best and a winning contribution was a surprise to the club as awhole, his average of 58 is a ridiculous as it is sublime. Will Dixon, Matt Bond,Shuja Ahmad and Chris Lansdowne all made handy contributions with the batand will hoping to make some more telling contributions during the 2014season, the former most likely in the second team.

Mark Hunter has continued to develop into a very capable batsman andcapped his season off with a fine 50 not out at Sefton Park, the first of hiscareer with an average just shy of 25, he deserves credit for working so hardon his game and has stood in to captain when needed in the absence of theskipper. The skipper took constant ribbing about slow batting was returnedwith compliments from some team mates who understand the art ofconstructing an innings, these long innings will hopefully turn into more tellingcontributions and high scores more often in during the 2014 season. Finally, the last sentence on batting is saved for a man who has become the lynchpinof the 3s over the last 3 years with this year being no exception, Pete Smith is

very much a team player, happy to field anywhere and always puts theinnings in that the team requires, when set, there are fewer better batsman inthe league, he is a pleasure to bat with and to captain, his 391 runs at ashade under 40 and 101* against Northern are the hallmarks of a greatbatsman who knows his game inside out, if we can all play half as well asPete than we will set competitive totals every game and be capable of chasingdown anything.

    Fielding

Fielding as ever, remains an area of improvement for the threes, apart from

one game, away at MCCC where there were 5 dropped catches, drops wherenot the problem with fielding this season, ground fielding on the whole during

  • 7/27/2019 Caldy Cc Reports 2013

    23/32

the first half of the season was poor, releasing pressure on batsmen andgiving the opposition the opportunity to turn over strike was the problem, thisimproved to an extent towards the end of the season, Im hopeful that withsome work during the winter and at net sessions we can be consistent in thefield as a side.

Behind the stumps the games were shared between the captain and AlexRisk, unlike his captain Alex is a natural wicket keeper and in managing histime behind the stumps he is showing that he has a huge future as a wicketkeeper batsman for the club, he has taken some catches that have changedgames and always got behind his team mates supporting them when headsgo down. The skipper finally showed the reason why he plays cricket with acombination of 22 catches and 7 stumpings for the season, only the secondteam skipper had more outfield catches. Adi Varma and Pete Smith showedtheir reliability in the field with 6 catches a piece along with Shuja Ahmad and

Dave Wylde they showed that 3s ability to hold their catches has improved. Aspecial mention goes to Dave Wylde for one of the best catches in the deepIve ever seen, one handed, diving to his right he held a low hard catch toshow theres life in the old dog yet. Pete Smith is the man who is nominatedas the 3rdXI fielder of the year, in addition to his 6 catches, he is happy tofield anywhere at the skippers request, silly point, or in the deep with a rocketarm, he took a great catch in the revenge victory against the fours and is themost humble man when talking about himself.

    Bowling

When I wasnt keeping my continued threatening to bowl myself seemed tomotivate the team into taking as many wickets as possible, all joking aside theteams problem has not been to take wickets, there have been various bigwickets taken by all players at crucial times aided the games that the teamwon, often the only criticism that could be levelled would be that somebowlers dont bowl at the stumps often enough, at this level bowling straight isthe key and point that will need to improve during the winter nets and goinginto the 2014 season. That isnt to say that it hasnt been a successful seasonbowling wise, the contributions of some have been excellent.

  • 7/27/2019 Caldy Cc Reports 2013

    24/32

Will Dixon was the first to make a huge impact on the season, he bowled oneof the best spells of bowling Ive had the pleasure to witness, 17 overs, 5

maidens, 8-43. The figures speak for themselves, and after taking 17 wicketsat an average of 8.24 his promotion into the second team was well deserved. He also seemed to love bowling in tandem with Russ Smith, his foil in juniorcricket, Russ has the ability to bowl with real pace and hostility, he took only 7wickets but deserved many more he also created wickets for his teammates, when the opposition couldnt play Russ they would go after the man at theother end, his contribution to the team is thankless, he needs to bowl at thestumps more often a criticism he himself would admit but few people hold thecredentials that Russ does, he has the potential to be a major team player.

There were sporadic contributions from various players in the 3s this season,Shuja Ahmad, Kieran Lowe, Chris Lansdowne, Dave Brown, Pete Haslam,Baz Chandrasekar, Mark Bland and Jack Hunter all took wickets throughoutthe season, bowling some good spells on contributing to the overallperformance. Jack and Baz in particular showed why they have spent themajority of their playing time in the second team this season, they show thethought processes of experienced performers and it is great that the thirdteam is able to allow them the stage to demonstrate their ability.

The majority of overs have been shared amongst 5 bowlers this season, theyall contribute very competently. Mark Hunter, true his form as the genuine all

rounder managed to use his specialist leg spin (full tosses) to take 10 wicketsat an average of 12, he deserved more overs and whenever he was thrownthe ball he always performed. Jack Pedley was also another key performer of2013, 15 wickets at 20 a piece show that he can be hostile with pace, bounceand swing that troubled batsman a more consistent line would see him getmore wickets but on his day Jack can be a match for anyone. Previouscaptain Nick Schneider showed he was able to bowl to anyone with anaverage under 5 when required by using a variation of full tosses, long hopsand the occasional good ball to get 19 wickets at a shade under 12 a piece,Nick is a key element to any bowling attack he provides control and its easy tothrow the ball to him and know exactly what your getting.

  • 7/27/2019 Caldy Cc Reports 2013

    25/32

The two biggest performers of the season were both the spin bowling tandemthat the 3s had at their disposal during the season. Shakti Ravichandranburst into Adult cricket with a smile and an exuberance that is infectious, hisfirst bowling spell, in the teams first win away at alder was devastating, hebowled just 9 balls, took three wickets and conceded only 2 runs. His wicket

taking celebrations have become almost as legendary as his constantrequests for when tea is and borrowing someone elses spikes to mark out hisrun up. Shakti is a very exciting player to captain, when you throw him the ballyou know something will happen, 20 wickets at just over 13 speak volumes fora 15 year old, he knows how to get batsman out and is able to turn the ball along way, his partnership with the evergreen Dave Wylde has been aparticularly fruitful one.

That brings me nicely onto to Dave, the only spin bowler who uses spin as avariation, and also the only man to ever bowl from 23 yards. I cant expresshow important having a bowler like Dave is to the team, if he isnt taking

wickets you know hell keep an end tied down, even when batsman go afterhim he is never flustered, his 32 wickets at a shade over 16 are testament tohis ability to think a batsman out and bowl to plans that he sets, for thesereasons Dave Wylde is the 3

    rdXI player of the year.

Catch of the year: Dave Brown, Sefton away at first slip got the ball in hishands and had no idea how it got there.

Shot of the year: Russ Smith, straight drive when opening the batting and heldthe pose KP-esq until he was stood next to the bowler!

Quack Quack Award: Jack Chris Martin Pedley, the very reason that number11 is known as Jack

As my first season as captain it was a pleasure to have so many of the seniorplayers who were able to support and guide me through the minefield that iscaptaincy. The start to the season was disappointing but the green shoots ofrecovery where evident and the younger members of the squad began toshow that they can step up to the plate when required, putting up big totals

will be the key and Im hopeful that well be able to be competitive nextseason and make a push at promotion.

    OVER 40s

Caldy delivered some impressive performances in its debut season in the over 40s this year.

Equally we came up against some excellent sides, visited some beautiful grounds, ate someexquisite teas, quaffed many a thirst quenching ale, and mercilessly extracted the michaelfrom our team mates. Some excellent batting from Rennie, Mellor, RDJ, Lucko and Pilley

were highlights - Pilley particularly, managed to achieve the requisite 30no off only 11 balls

at home to Upton...with the ball, Billy Wright, Lord Kay, Mark Hunter and Dave Wylde were

stalwarts, backed up by my secret weapon, the erstwhile Peter Smith.

Memories of note were the aforementioned Pilley innings, Mark Bland taking 4 of the worst

wickets I've ever seen at Oxton, the 20 year old Ste Greene opening at Chester, the constant

availability of Mssrs Laycock, Luxon and Wright, and the constant protestation from the

chairman that he isn't yet 40, which no-one believes...

The over 40s has been an excellent way to integrate the older members of the club from all

four Saturday senior teams, to play some good midweek cricket at places we wouldn't usuallyvisit and to royally take the p*ss at every opportunity...long may it continue.

    Caldy juniors 2013 season.

    Coaching.

The weather was the best we've had for quite a few years which meant very few

sessions were cancelled. I felt this was one of the reasons why all our teams had theirbest season since I have coached at Caldy.

Another big factor was Chris Edwards passing his level 3 coaching badge in record time

which brought new ideas to our sessions.

The sessions were very well attended and numbers were up on previous seasons. It was

the first time in the clubs history that we fielded two under eleven teams which proved

a great success as we could give everybody a game regularly. We also acquired the

services of four new team managers who did a great job. Ian Taylor(13s),Keith

    Rutherford(11sA), Matty Holt(11sB), Tom Robinson (9s).

    League performances.

    13s.

The thirteens started the season in great style winning six of their first seven games and

crushing Port Sunlight by 85run who finished runners up. In the cup unfortunately the

weather beat us with games cancelled twice and losing on a toss of a coin. A big plus for

this team was that only 4 of the team were of the correct age the remainder were a

year younger or two years younger so this looks good for next season. Three of this

team went on to represent the senior Caldy teams and from all accounts performed verywell.

    11sA

This team proved to be the most successful of all the juniors which was brilliantly led by

Keith Rutherford team manager. They only lost 2 league games and all though there's

no table out yet they must have finished 2nd or 3rd. They were the only team to beat

Chester who must have won the league. They also reached the league cup final and

although they we're beaten, 7 of our team were a year younger which was a

    tremendous performance.

    11sB

The 11sB were a joy to watch this season, manage by an Aussie they showed great

enthusiasm, most of the boys were a year younger and we promoted three under nines

into the squad. Things look very good for the age group next season.

    9s

The 9s is the main development squad, for many its their first taste of league cricket.

With team changing from week to week results are only secondary, but they did havesome outstanding results and were unbeaten in their first five games and with three of

the best players playing under 11s hard ball they performed great. A big thank you to

Tom Robinson and Stuart Royden for running this team.

I can only see the club going from strength to strength having witnessed the best

season during my time at Caldy . I think next season will be even better.

    Caldy U 15s 2013

Caldy u 15s had great hopes of repeating last years excellent season, when we won the CheshirePlate. The squad had a large number of u 15s in contrast to last year but whilst we had some goodgames and performances, we did not win as many games as last year, usually because we did not

    score enough runs.

We were hit by injuries and absences to some of our most important players for a large part of theseason but this allowed a large number of the squad to gain experience and not only play a lot ofgames, but be fully involved in those games. This is never easy when most of the matches are just 25overs per side. This helped the development of those players, especially the u 14s and those u 13s

that played in the Wirral league matches.

For the second year in a row, Caldy entered the Cheshire league, which meant that the team played alarge number of games. We then played as usual in the Wirral league in the summer holidays when

the team was divided between the u 15s, some u 14s but quite a few of the leading u 13 players.

The most exciting game was away Upton when the team won a low scoring game. Caldy batted firstand managed to reach 95 after a slow start. Upton were on course for an easy win at 79 for 4 withanother 10 overs to go but then Jack Hunter and Jacob came back to bowl and suddenly Upton were

    88 all out.

The other highlight was avoiding defeat away at Alvanley in the last game of the season when the last2 batsmen Robbie Barnard and Shakthi saw out the last over and secured a draw over our new badtempered rivals.

    Batting

The season was certainly affected by the absence of Tyrone Adams, who only played 4 matches, andin his last 3 games he got 3 scores of 40 not out in a row. He was then injured and the teams batting

was much weaker without his ability to build an innings and provide partnerships for others.

The top scoring batsman this season was Jack Hunter with 262 runs. Jack tended to open the batting

with Matthew Bond in the absence of Tyrone, Matthew Bond grew into what is the difficult role of anopening batsman and by the end of the summer he looked comfortable with the best of the opposition

bowling and was capable to scoring runs at the top of the order.

    30/32

The reason why we did not win as many matches as last year was that we usually only had 3 or 4batsmen scoring double figures and we often collapsed once the first few batsmen were out and didnot make the most of our overs. Our batsman found it hard to balance the need to stay in for a full

innings as well as scoring runs.

There were good signs towards the end of the season in the longer Wirral league matches that in the

younger players, Alex Risk and Dan ONeill have the patience to be able to bat for long periods. Usingthe new nets properly to practice staying in will be important in next years u 15s.

The top 7 batsmen were as follows

    Runs - innings

    Jack Hunter 262 15

    Matty Bond 161 -12

    Tyrone Adams 146 - 4

    Bharath Chandrasekhar 123-11

    James Mehra 114 9

    Leon Barnard 59-10

    Alex Risk 57 - 5

    Bowling

The leading wicket taker was Jack Hunter once again. The teams other leading wicket taker wasShakthi. He emerged as the teams leading spinner, who at the start of the season only had to turn upin his black trainers, to get wickets. Caldy were a strong bowling attack this year and Jacob Earl andJames Mehra provided good pace along with Jack. Nitin Rajan emerged as a very useful bowler and

Chris Lansdown from the u 13s performed well in the later games.

The dry wickets helped Caldy other spin bowlers, with Bharath always capable of getting the bestbatsmen out and Dan ONeill who always looked capable of getting a wicket by surprising batsmenwith his big turning deliveries. Hopefully we will also see more of Will Rowan next season who was a

loss to the team when he could not play.

The top 6 bowlers were as follows

  • 7/27/2019 Caldy Cc Reports 2013

    31/32

    Bowling overs runs - wickets

    Jack H 70-169-19

    Shakthi Ravachandran 42-206-12

    B Chandrasekhar 29-115-9

    Dan ONeill 26-95-7

    James M 35-124-7

    Jacob Earl 43-238-6

    Nitin Rajan 31-206-6

    Fielding

The team were not able to rely on Tyrone Adamss excellent wicket keeping and so this duty was

shared between Bharath and then Alex Risk, once his u 13 games had finished.

The team was usually good with its fielding and this was led principally by Bharath Chandrasekhar, who once again took some brilliant catches, usually standing at the Bharath position at stupidly shortcover. The other leading fielders such as Jack Hunter, Matty Bond and Leon Barnard also took good

    catches.

There was the occasional game where everyone seemed to take turns in dropping catches but therewere other games when good fielding made a difference, including the win against Upton when Will

Sara Kelly got 2 crucial run outs.

    And finally

Thanks to everyone who came to train and who played for the u 15s. Thanks especially to AlanMellor for his time and effort leading the training and at matches and also to Mike Stone who was also

always available to assist at training and with the scoring at the matches.

Many thanks also to everyone who brought their boys along to training and to matches and thanks as

always to all those who help behind the scenes to allow the boys to train and play each week.
