Words matter. Some-times they hit you straight in the face. Other times, they grow on you. In this case, they grew in me. Let me backtrack a little.

In January of 2015, my husband came home one evening with the story of an elderly woman who was newly homebound. It was a situation that was not going to change. The picture win-dow in her front room be-came, from her recliner, her new view of the world. Her children had rallied around with 24 hour care to keep her in her home. Life had been permanently altered for her large extended fami-ly.

With a purpose and a plan, I quickly got to work.

The next week, my hus-band delivered the quilt to one of her daughters. Shortly thereafter, I re-ceived a written thank you from the woman. and it was a perfect match to her recliner and living room curtains.

Her words have rolled around in my head for the last year and a half. The majority of my completed quilts and other projects, including doll quilts, a few charity quilts, Quilts of Valor, and Quillows have gone to children and adults that I don't personally know. Quite simply, it doesn't matter that I don't "know them." What I do know is that my work most likely brightened someone's day in some way. That is what matters.

Our Mission:

Organized in 1983 to educate and encourage members in the quilting arts; to encourage high standards in color, design, and construction of the quilted medium, and to stimulate interest in quilting in the community.

PRESIDENT'S GIFT

The President's Gift this year will be a gift of fabric.

Nancy favors Civil War prints. You may bring your fabric to any meeting and leave it in the bag at the Membership table (sign-in).

It is the guild's way to thank an outgoing President for all of their hard work. Nancy has been a very dedicated and supportive leader these past 2 years.

We will present this at the September meeting.

Kathee Secor

The beautiful MVQG Raffle Quilt “Spiced Mocha Delight”

has been accepted at both the Shipshewana Indiana Quilt show which runs June 23 through 25th

and the AQS Grand Rapids Michigan Show which runs August 10th through 13th.

Thanks to everyone that helped with the quilt creation, piecing and quilting as follows:

Raffle Quilt Chair: Heidi Vahrenwald Quilt Committee: Susie Goodley, Cindy Hoste, Bever-

ly Hoy, Patricia Morrison, Margaret Reinart and Mary Soeder

Longarm Quilter: Cathy Jarvis.

Thank you for all your hard work

to Wendy Canada and her helpers from the library in supporting the "Read History Book" activity!

The following winners received quilt history books. (Gee, imagine that!) Hey & maybe after they have read them, donate to the guild library. Beverly Kuhljuergen: "Time Span Quilts: New

Quilts From Old Tops" by Becky Herdle Annie Collett: "Crazy Quilts" by Penny McMorris Karen Narske (I think Karen has won every contest

except for Drawing Paisley): "American Quilt Col-lections: Antique Quilt Masterpeicers" by Shelly Zegart

Fran Borhart: "In Time of War: A Study of Civil War Era 1850-1865." Edited by American Quilt Study Group.

Thank you to all of you who read quilt history books. We have great books in the library that should ALL be

checked out every month (so the gals don't have to carry so many books!)

Keep reading. Catherine Noll Litwinow

To enter the September quilt challenge, please sign up and submit $1 per entry to Nancy Jacobsen at the afternoon meeting and Nancy Duvall at the evening meetings.

The dictionary defines the word border in the following two ways: the line that officially separates two countries or regions, and a decorative band that runs along the edge of something.

We are going to combine these two definitions for our quilt challenge. The quilt should represent a country, possibly one you have visited, have always wanted to visit or is part of your heritage. This can be accomplished by using fabric from or rep-resenting the country you choose, or a block that symbolizes or has a country in its name.

Around the center focal point there will be three borders. Any technique can be used. It does not have to be square, but the total liner measurement of the sides can be no more than 120 inches (30x30, 20x40, etc.).

The quilt show is rapidly approach-ing. We have been so successful in past years and I know we will be successful again this year. What makes our shows so successful? It is you, the members, who donate your time and talents to ensure that we have a wonderful show filled with beautiful quilts. We need volunteers for many different duties. Early sign up as-sures that you will get the hours and days and position that work best for you. If you enjoy the guild meetings, workshops

and/or classes, then I know you will want to volunteer a few hours to help so these programs will continue.

The sign-up book will be available at each meeting through September. I encourage you to sign up for at least one segment.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation! Kathee Secor

Quilt Pick Up On Saturday, September 24th, members who are ex-

hibiting their quilts in the show can get a number for order of pick up at the admissions table from 2-3:30 p.m.

Quilt distribution will begin at 4:30. Enthusiastic and cheerful helpers are needed to get this important job done. Please consider giving us a hand and see Kathy Secor to sign up in the quilt show volunteer book.

Thank you. Paula Hardi (309) 797-3986

Small Quilt Auction Now is the time to seriously con-sider a donation of one or more items to the “Small Quilt and Related Items” Committee for our September Quilt Show. As in the past, auction proceeds will go

to Winnie’s Place (sheltering abused women and their children on both sides of the river) and Quilts of Valor. It is also planned for our “Quillows” Committee to receive a portion of the pro-ceeds this year as well.

Beautiful items are needed for the auction which will be held on both days of the show. A wide variety of items, purses, tote bags, wall hangings, items with a use-ful purpose around the house (table runners, Christmas Tree Skirts, baskets, etc.), and larger quilts are always welcome. We have a donation of two small ironing ta-bles, which have been popular items the past several shows. You might even have a quality quilt kit that you purchased and are never going to assemble that could make a great donation.

If you have any questions about the Small Quilt Auc-tion, please see or call any of us on the committee.

Nancy Jacobsen, Lynn Figg or Jane Becker.

Poster Distribution You have done such a GREAT job of

distributing our quilt show bookmarks that they are all gone!! Thank you.

Now we need to distribute the quilt show posters. The poster contains all of the 2016 Great River Quilt Show infor-mation (including a QR code disguised as a quilt block) as the bookmark but in a larger 8½” x 14” size. They should be placed on community bulletin boards such as those found at restaurants and grocery stores. Perhaps your workplace has a break room with a bulletin board. Or maybe your hair salon or nail salon will display a poster. The garage I have my car re-paired at has a community bulletin board. So you see, there are many opportunities to inform the public about our wonderful MVQG 2016 Great River Quilt Show.

Posters are available at the front check-in desk at Guild meetings or by contacting Dorine. Please pick up a few. Thank you in advance.

Rainy summer days are perfect times to make items for the Quilt Show Boutique, a consignment shop where members can sell their hand made quilt and craft items. In previous shows baby items, purses, pincushions, wine bottle holders, small quilts, and jewelry were sold. Boutique Inventory sheets are available and must be completed if you are planning on selling items. Please consider making items for the Boutique to support our Guild, which receives 20% of the price of your item. If you have any concerns or questions, call Pauline Hartung at 309-786-4891.

Registration for the quilt show has begun…

...and will close at midnight on August 2nd. If you have any questions please give Cathy Ben-nett a call at 563-381-4423. If you don't have access to a com-

puter paper registrations are available also. Please call any of the quilt show committee members and bring your registration to either of the next two meetings and they will be input by our team. Make sure that you properly measure your quilt. It's important to have the correct size so Clayton can have an accurate placement in the show for your quilt. Also please attach your hang-ing sleeve no more than 90" from the BOTTOM.
