polish, energy, commitment, joy and dedication from everyone was so obvious. To hear the children in the matinee performance applaud, scream, give the cast a standing ovation and then for them all to spontaneously start dancing along is testament to how the performance affected everyone in the room. Our teachers were particularly touched that Lucy Koschel gave our Year 5 and 6 children a wave, and so proud to see so many ex-students on stage. It was a very happy, wonderful experience. We can’t thank you enough for inviting St A’s, for sending the buses to transport the children, for the whole experience and for the high level of entertainment. I have no doubt that tonight’s performance will be phenomenal as well. Best wishes for tonight and THANK YOU again.

Fantastic

I writing to send my congratulations to staff and students who put on a fantastic musical performance for us last night at The Arts Centre. It was outstanding. The effort of all involved was certainly evident and I am in awe and inspired at the level of talent, determination and commitment of staff and students to put together such a huge and professional production. It was a wonderful night that left my family and I proud to be part of the Marymount College community. My Congratulations again to all involved.

Sensational

Well done. Just sensational. Thank you so much. It just lifted my spirits. Congratulations to all involved.

Sorry! One last message.

Thank you to all who helped last night and are going to help Wednesday. The kids were amazing tonight…not just as performers but as human beings! It truly makes me understand why I chose this job. If you haven’t booked a ticket, don’t miss out.

ANZAC Day

We commemorated the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli as a whole school today at 11:00am.

The gathering in the P&F Courtyard, with the Australian and New Zealand Flags at the centre added to the occasion. Both the Australian and New Zealand anthems were sung and Matthew Hurley read from a letter written by his grandfather Jack White, a soldier from Gallipoli and the Western Front. Following a minutes silence Caitlin Avery played The Last Post and Reville. We invited our students to join other students who have already committed to commemoration services on Saturday. Certainly the Burleigh Heads RSL, like every RSL across the nation, has been preparing for tomorrow for many years. It will be a very significant occasion in the life of this country.

On ANZAC Day the College will have Darcy Reynolds and Mr Symons at ANZAC Cove, Ms Mullins, Max Miskell, Lucy Koschell and Nixon Brass at the Currumbin Dawn Service, Mr Corner, Mr Rezo, Year 10 students and other students at the Burleigh Heads Dawn Service, and a larger gathering of College students across all year levels, lead by Taya Oxenham and Jack Nelson at the Burleigh Parade and commemoration where Father Ken Howell will lead prayer. We appreciate the commitment of our students as the nation remembers the ANZACS, all who have served our nation, all who died in this service, all who have suffered through their service to their country and all who have been affected by these deaths, injuries and illnesses as a result of war. Lest we forget.

Mrs Cook and Mr Hamilton will attend a South East QLD Community Dawn Service at the Brisbane Showgrounds after sleeping in swags under the stars.

Sundays of Easter

This week we are celebrating the fourth Sunday of Easter and have included an article by Pat Tomlinson, written for last Sunday, to invite parents and students to continue to reflect on Christ’s life, death and resurrection. It is the greatest story of all time and invites each one of us to reconsider our own life’s purpose and response. Pat Tomlinson suggests humility and openness to mystery are called for as we acknowledge our doubt yet join with our community in Eucharist.

Chris NoonanPrincipal

The road to Emmaus story is one of the great and wonderful stories that we have heard many times. It is not only the story about the disciples going from one place to another… rather it’s the story of everyman’s and everywoman’s journey.

As the disciples walked along their eyes “were held”. They did not recognise Jesus. Then when Jesus appeared among them He “opened their minds”. Jesus asks them: “Why are you frightened and why do doubts arise in your hearts?”

Where are you on your road to Emmaus? Do doubts arise in your heart? All of us are on that road and we are at different places. Some are more familiar than others with that road…. it represents the road of disappointment and failure and dreams which will never happen, but also the road of discovery. The apostles were wounded as they travelled that road… we are wounded too. They doubted and they questioned. We do the same.

When the disciples experience and know Jesus, their past is changed. They can now revisit the past with the new light and the new love that has made their hearts burn. They take the light of Easter Sunday back into the darkness of Good Friday and things look different. Through the words of Jesus and in the breaking of the bread, the past is brought up to date.

When we gather each week to celebrate the Eucharist, we too listen to the word of God and break bread together. Jesus comes among us not as the stranger; rather He comes to us in Word and Sacrament to give us new hope to face the future. Sometimes our own stories may not sound very different from the two sad disciples on the road to Emmaus. We too may have a past that is painful and makes little sense to us. But we are invited to tell our stories to the Lord, to invite Him back into those experiences and to listen as

He speaks His word and then to recognize Him in the breaking of the bread.

Jesus himself made the distinction between those who “see and hear” and those who “perceive and understand”. Being part of an event or an experience is no guarantee that we will understand it. As someone once said: We have had the experiences but missed the meaning. During this Easter time, I wonder if any of us missed the meaning? One of my favourite Easter stories is about the doubting Thomas. Thomas lives in all of us and it’s good to know Jesus didn’t rebuke Thomas. He simply said: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe."

Where are you in all of this? In the past, doubt has often been looked upon as a sign of weakness. We felt guilty. But doubt can be a growing point. There is no such thing as absolute certainty about spiritual things. These days the church often does not look or sound “flash”! I find these times in which we live difficult to deal with but maybe we are, like Thomas, invited by Jesus to draw closer to Him and to look at His wounds.

So what will it take for us to believe? What kind of proof are we looking for? Resurrection means that we are called to action. It is not just something that happened to Jesus two thousand years ago. It’s something that happens to us today as our eyes and hearts are open to the Scriptures.

My hope lies in the fact that Easter is not over....encountering the risen Jesus is always possible; in fact Easter is still in our future. Christ waits to be recognised in the Word and in sharing the cup. More dangerously, Christ also waits for us in the face of every stranger. And so, let’s tread boldly, look earnestly and listen intently. In so doing, Easter is yet possible again.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL SENIoR SECoNDARY

Welcome to Term 2

It is pleasing to note that students have readily settled back into the start of the new term. This is considering we still have not been able to access the new building. It has been a tight squeeze at times teaching classes in the library and the like; so we are all looking forward to more private and personal space in the coming days.

Parent Teacher Interviews

There looks to be a good response to Parent Teacher interviews from families to date. We encourage all parents to make the time to interact with our teachers to continue the very important partnership between school and home. If you have not booked places online, you should do so asap.

Principal’s Awards

The other pleasing follow-up to the Term 1 Interim Report is the Principal’s Awards coming up in Week 3 (Tuesday 5 May). This is always a significant event in the life of our College where we get to acknowledge the fine efforts of many students, particularly those who will never shine out as the very best academics in their individual subjects; yet still give their all to their studies.

Assessment Policies

A quick reminder about assessment policies: If a criteria tasks sheet nominates dates for submissions for work in progress; drafts; finals; all of these deadlines must be met. That is, a draft is not optional, if dated and listed on the criteria tasks sheet. Senior exams and tests cannot be sat at an earlier time; as we are unable to then secure the integrity of the test content and testing progress for all other students. All assessment must be completed and then placed in student folios for later scrutiny. This remains the case even if the student failed to meet finals deadlines, meaning the work cannot be graded as a result. At worst, incomplete folios may result in the student not receiving credit for the Semester course for that subject; thus the need to ensure that all work is submitted. End of Semester I exams during exam block is always a tight deadline, as we need to complete the Semester reporting prior to the end of Term 2. This creates a deal of pressure on students, son they should prepare wisely in advance from now.

Darcy Reynolds, WWII Veteran Mr Lionel Veale, and Max Miskell

In the lead up to ANZAC Day on Saturday, the Queensland ANZAC Premier’s Awardee, Darcy Reynolds laid a wreath at the War Memorial in Brisbane; this was followed by a press conference with the Premier where Darcy spoke about his forthcoming trip and the importance of remembering those who died, enabling us to enjoy our freedoms and quality of life in Australia.

Darcy left on Wednesday and as part of the Anzac Award, he will be touring Gallipoli and the Western Front with the other Queensland recipients. On behalf of the Marymount community, Darcy will place a poppy cross and drape the Australian flag on the grave of Jack McGowan Year 12 student Tara Heggie’s great, great grandfather.

Max Miskell who worked on the project with Darcy, will be giving the Secondary School ANZAC address at the Currumbin Dawn Service. The Service will be broadcast live both nationally and internationally reaching countries such as Canada, UK, China, New Guinea, and parts of Europe. Max’s speech is included in this week’s edition of the Newsletter as we join with him to remember and honour those who gave up their lives for us.

Speech by Max Miskell to be spoken at the Currumbin Dawn Service

Today we commemorate and honour the courage, determination and sacrifice of our fallen and returning soldiers. This year, as we celebrate the Centenary of ANZAC Day, I am deeply honoured and privileged to speak on behalf of our young people, as we pay tribute to the men and women, who fought and died for our country, so that future generations like mine, can live in freedom.

As a member of this generation, the meaning and history of the Anzac spirit, was something that was only a subject at school for most of us. The significance and true meaning, was something I had rarely considered.

Over the passed two years however, I have been on an extraordinary journey, which has revealed to me the true meaning of the Anzac spirit and tradition, and I now look on, with awe, at the path that was paved, for all Australians since that unforgettable time in history. The mateship, a core value for all Australians, was obvious in the ANZAC’s support of each other and of their country. It is the backbone of what our country stands for today. It is what the men and women in the armed forces continue to do with passion, 100 years later.

This Anzac spirit is forever etched in our nation’s core, and in the heart of Australians. As well as the immense pride we feel, we also feel grief, and sadness for the loss of so many young lives, for their dreams that have gone unrealised. The sacrifices of the brave men and women in our history must never be forgotten, and it is our responsibility to continue to honour them. The mark they have made on the Australian landscape is one that should always be remembered, and also admired, by people of all ages. In doing this, the Anzac tradition, and spirit, will live on for generations to come.

MUSICAL DIRECToR REPoRT

The band played from a two metre high scaffold behind the set

A huge thank you to the instrumental staff and students involved in the Hairpsray musical band.

The experience of rehearsing and piecing together the music throughout the process leading up to production last week at the Arts Centre was an extremely valuable experience.

The vision of Ms Amy Anderson to place the band on a two metre high scaffolding added an extra dimension to our role and contributed to the enjoyment of performing in the show.

Vocal Director Ms Jodie Young worked with singers in the show to produce the amazing vocals, her energy and attention to detail is commendable.

Music students, Jack Palmer, Matthew Treggiden, Caitlin Avery, Fred Nicholson, Mitchell Weatherall and Cameron Saliba were sensational and loved being involved.

We were very fortunate to have the support of our Instrumental Teachers Ms Martha Baartz, Ms Amy Cooper, Ms Jesse-Lee Mahler, Mr Malcom Liddell, Mr Simon Fagence, Mr Ryan Brockwell, and Mr Citvan Barac who performed beside our students.

Host Families are required for students of Yuhigaoka gakuen High School from osaka, Japan attending Marymount College from 26 July - 9 August 2015

This is a worthwhile opportunity for your family to learn about Japanese culture, while sharing with your Japanese student the lifestyle of an Australian family.

Families are asked to provide all meals and a friendly home for their student.

They will travel to and from school each day the same way as arranged for your own children (please provide transportation fee).

Payment to host families will be paid to assist with some of the expenses involved when hosting your student.

If you are hosting another Japanese student during Yuhigaoka High School’s stay, please refrain from becoming a host family for Yuhigaoka High School students.

Yes, I would like to host a Japanese student, but… Will the student speak any English?

Yes. However, as their English skills may be limited, we would ask that you speak clearly and slowly (but not in a patronising way) when communicating with them.

Will I have to cook Japanese food for the student?

No. Your Japanese student is here to experience an Australian lifestyle. This includes spending mealtimes with your family, and eating what you and your family normally eat.

Is it OK if the parent/s work full time?

Yes. During these times (e.g. After school), your Japanese student can spend time with your own

children. Families who live near each other are encouraged to share transport, or other activities outside of school.

Do we need Blue Cards?

Yes. If your family hosts an overseas student for 10 or more days, it is necessary for all family members over the age of 18 to have a current Blue Card. Please contact the school office to obtain blue card application form.

If you would like to host a Japanese student this year, please contact Ms Kanae Aki to obtain a Host Family Application Form

YEAR 11 - YEAR COORDInATORS REpORT

It was absolutely fantastic to see so many Year 11 students on stage

Welcome Back

A warm welcome back to the Year 11 students and what a hectic start it has been for many of them due to the College musical Hairspray being performed on Tuesday and Wednesday night. It was absolutely fantastic to see so many Year 11 students on stage strutting their stuff and bringing the crowd to their feet as they showcased their talents. The commitment and dedication they have shown and the sacrifices they have made in order to prepare for the show truly paid off and the results were nothing short of outstanding.

To all of our Year 11 students involved we extend our congratulations, we are very proud of your performances. If you bring the same enthusiasm to the remainder of term 2 we have no doubt it will bring further success.

Round 1 - 1st XIII v PBC SHS

The 2015 Titans Cup and Challenge Competitions kicked off on Wednesday of this week with our 1st XIII recording a resounding victory over Palm-Beach Currumbin SHS at Mudgeeraba JRLFC (Firth Park).

Marymount’s 2nd XIII drew the bye in this first round but will be taking the field from next week.

After many months of preparation, going back to October 2014, the boys were very keen to have their first hit out as a team for this year. Individually they were well organised and this showed in their performance.

In this early season match, the team was led by Sam Clark (Captain) and Cameron Cooper (Vice-Captain). Both young men had very good games and led by example. Cameron finished as the Marymount Mako Man of the Match with 12 votes from his teammates – well done.

The first half saw the Makos get out to a 20-0 lead with tries to C Cooper - centre (2), Lachlan Smith - fullback, and Ben Moroney – dummy half. Conversions were kicked by Bayley Gill – five eighth and Matt Egan – lock, with one each.

Marymount’s physical and mental fitness held out throughout the remainder of the game but due to the large number of experimental changes made to the on-field team we were unable to cross the line in the second half. PBC scored one soft unconverted try to finish the match 20-4.

ALL boys from both our sides need to continue to train for each week’s game. Training sessions take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings between 6.30-8.

Similarly, ALL players need to understand that there will be changes made to both teams each

week until we arrive at the combinations we are after. Having said that, no boy should think that his place is cemented in either the 1st or 2nd XIII.

Both teams look forward to seeing lots of supporters at next week’s fixture which is again at Firth Park:

2nd XIII @ 5pm v Robina SHS

1st XIII @ 6pm v Woodridge SHS

Keep up the good work boys, there is a long way to go!!!
