Working bee before the big movie night
As part of the community celebrations of the Kincumber
Festival, our school is hosting an outdoor cinema event. I
was excited to hear that Despicable Me was chosen to be
screened. I‟ve lost count of the times I‟ve enjoyed watching
it with my grandsons when they have had a sleepover – but
I bet they‟ll want to come with me to see it again on a big
outdoor screen. Thanks Janine (Roberts) from our P & C for
organising the night for us. There‟s posters and flyers
advertising all the details including online booking.
To get the school looking its best before the big screening,
our general assistant, Larry, has organized a working bee
this Sunday morning. If you have some spare time, some
sturdy boots and tools to help move mulch it will be greatly
appreciated.
Book Week
Mrs Judd, our teacher/librarian, has been hard at work in
the library with Book Week and the Book Fair. Thank you to all the parents and children who have supported the Book
Fair, Megan Cranney for helping Donna and to the teachers
for working hard in class time to get the story-boards ready
for the Book Week Parade today.
Although I couldn‟t be there, (and I‟m writing this newsletter on Wednesday night on my laptop at home because I‟ll be at
the district athletics carnival at Mingara on Thursday), I‟m sure the children will get a lot out of this activity. The theme
for Book Week this year is “Champions Read” and I‟m proud to say we are a school of champions!
Uniforms
As a rule, the wearing of uniform at our school is
consistently high. Just lately, there has been a lapse in our
usual good standard. Black leather shoes or white joggers for sport, legionnaires or broad brimmed hats and black
track-pants or shorts are uniform. There have been a large number of Raben-style canvas slip-on shoes in a rainbow of
colours, black leggings and skinny black jeans or baseball cap-style hats being worn.
Essential to us maintaining our good reputation in the
community is the wearing of school uniform. There will be a uniform blitz next week with letters going home to those
children out of uniform with no good reason. Please contact me if this poses a problem for you.
Rule of the Week
This week‟s rules are about movement between classes.
Teachers and students practised and talked about the following expectations that relate to our school‟s four values
of Care, Courtesy, Cooperation and Commonsense.
The reason for these rules is so that students are able to
walk safely between rooms without disturbing or
interrupting other students and teachers. Being prompt
allows lessons to start on time.
Hope you had a great week at our great school!

On the 17th of August the library monitors had the opportunity
to go to the Our Lady of Rosary School for a book week library monitor luncheon. At this luncheon, we had the opportunity to
meet new people from other schools, and also had the opportunity to meet an amazing author, Deborah Abela.
Some of her books are in our library and also at the Book Fair. She has many different and adventurous books that you will
love. She taught us so many new writing skills and also gave us so many new ideas. At the end of the day, we had the
opportunity to get some of our school library books and we were able to purchase her new book called Grimsdon. It is full
of exciting adventures between smart and adventurous
children. If you want to read some of her books, go to the library. We have plenty for you to choose from.
Thank you to the parents who drove us there on this day. We would also like to thank Mrs Judd for taking the
time to come to this luncheon with us. Alyssa Riding

Gonski could be great for our school
Have your heard about the findings of the Gonski Review? Well, potentially it is very good news for our school and our students.
Headed by senior businessman David Gonski, the review was the most comprehensive national investigation of school
funding in almost 40 years. It found not only was the current funding system broken but Australia is investing far too little in
schools. The lack of funding is having significant consequences for
students with widening gaps between what students achieve in disadvantaged areas compared to those in wealthy areas.
Gonski said a major funding increase for public schools and (some private schools) is urgently required to ensure a high quality education for all.
That increase translates to an average of $1,500 per student
extra per year in public schools. If we were to receive that amount it would mean an additional $645 000 in our budget. For our school, additional money would be spent in the areas
we know make a real difference for students such as smaller class sizes, more individual assistance for students with
particular needs and additional staff. The problem is that, despite the positive response from all
education sectors to the report, there has been no commitment by either the Federal Government or the Opposition in Canberra
to the new system or the additional funding. The Australian Education Union, which represents teachers and
principals, is running a national campaign to get a commitment to the funding and new laws passed based on the Gonski
recommendations before the end of 2012. If you would like to see additional resources flowing to our
school, you can register your support at the Australian Education Union‟s campaign website
www.igiveagonski.com.au . Alternatively, if you would like to contact our federal MP Deb-
orah O‟Neill directly you can do so at 4322 1922.

YMCA UPDATE
Dear Parents,
Once again, the interest level for Vacation Care at
Kincumber has been extremely low. With this in mind we have decided to not proceed with our Holiday Adventure
Program for the upcoming school holidays at Kincumber.
Many of our Kincumber families have utilised our Wamberal and our Niagara Park services in the past and
we look forward to sharing some Holiday Adventures to-gether again this September/October.
Kind Regards
Natasha Millard
