I would like to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year! This will be a great year for everyone involved in the Foothills Middle School Community. I am honored to be working in partnership with a very dedicated, committed and talented staff and supportive parents. We are pleased that your child is attending Foothills and pledge to do our best to deserve your trust and confidence. We hope your child's experiences here will be both happy and productive. This year we will start off our year with an Open House for all 7th and 8th grade parents & students on Wednesday, August 21st from 5:00-6:30. Come and meet your teachers and visit classrooms! During this time, students will get their class schedules, meet staff members and ASB officers, take school tours, and get lockers and learn how to open them. Students are welcome to bring their school supplies that day, to put in their lockers. Parents are welcome to join us for the entire event or from 11:00-11:30 to meet our 6th grade teachers. This event will take the place of our 6th grade open house. This year we are fortunate to have some outstanding additions to our staff: * Spencer Merrill – 8th grade Science * Olivia Newberry – 7th grade Core * Cindy Martinez Corrick – Special Education * Nathan Weber – 6th grade Core * Hailey Griffith – Counselor I am blessed to be a member of this incredible staff and we are committed to helping your child reach their fullest potential. Your student is responsible for bringing this packet home to you. The packet will include information about: student rights & responsibilities, policies, and required forms that NEED TO BE RETURNED. Please review all of this information with your student.

Greetings from the Foothills PTSA We hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer! Here at Foothills we have a PTSA comprised of volunteer parents, staff, and students who work together to provide support for extracurricular activities that enhance learning, and to help create community, involvement, and advocacy for FMS students and their families. Simply put, we help sponsor clubs, activities/events, and purchases that are not covered within the school’s budget. Some examples of activities/resources that the PTSA has supported in recent years include: - Coordinating volunteers for school activities/events - Staff appreciation - Community food drive - Falcon spirit wear - 6th Grade Camp - Robotics Club - Math Club - Expanding Your Horizons field trip - Who Am I As An American award - Family Advocate fund - Debate Club Our board members for 2019-20 include: Kendra Macon and Bindu Nayak (Co-Treasurers), Lana Bromiley (Secretary), Katja Rowell and Lorna Randall (Co-Vice Presidents), and Ginny Kinnebrew (President). We welcome your participation in the PTSA! There are many ways to help… as an active member at meetings and events, a volunteer at a school activity, or other contribution to PTSA-sponsored efforts. We can’t do it without you! Please join us on Facebook at Foothills Middle School PTSA and watch for program updates and current events. If you would like to get involved, or have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We already have a number of fun and educational events in the works. This is going be a great year at Foothills! Ginny Kinnebrew, President (907) 440-6277 [email protected] For information on how to become a member and/or support the PTSA, please see the student fees page for more details later in this newsletter.

STUDENT SCHEDULES Schedules for 7th and 8th grade students will be available for pickup on August 20 from 9:00-3:00 at the school. Please call if you notice any mistakes on your schedule like two classes of the same subject or a missing period or required class. Keep your schedule in a safe place and bring it to school on the first day. Your schedule will guide you through your first day in school. Changing your schedule is a complex process that usually involves making changes to many of your classes even when you only want to change one class. Contact Ms. Griffith (7th/8th) or Mrs. Sherwood (6th), our counselors, if you have a problem with your schedule. On the first day of school, please attend the assigned classes on your schedule. Your teacher will give you directions on how to go about making any needed class changes. No Class Schedule? There are a few reasons why you may not have received a schedule prior to the start of school: 1) You have not had your MMR immunization booster; 3

doses of Hep B Immunization, or Varicella vaccination (if you have not ever had the chicken pox) and T-dap immunization (once you turn 11 yrs. old). These shots are required in order for you to receive your schedule and attend school.

2) You may still owe fines from last year. 3) Your schedule has not yet been completed by the

counselor. If this is the case, you will receive your schedule on the first day of school when entering the building.

SPORTS 7th and 8th grade fall sports begin on the first day of school (excluding tennis)! 6th grade fall sports and tennis begin the second week of school. In order to participate, you must complete the following by the day before the first practice: 1) record of a physical examination signed by doctor on file in the office (good for 13 months) 2) pay ASB fee ($15) 3) be a resident of the Wenatchee School District 4) be under 15 years of age as of June 1, 2019. The physical form is located on the FMS website under the Quick Link “Sports Info & Schedules”/ “Clearance Process” or in our office. It is recommended that you clear for fall sports prior to the first day of school. You may not participate/practice until all of your forms are completed and the school nurse has cleared you to participate. Minimum practices are required before you can participate in a game.

ASB FEES ASB fees are required for participation in ASB activities. Students must pay the annual $15 fee in order to participate in any extra-curricular activities (sports, clubs, ASB office, competitions, activities). The fee may be paid in the school office or online (see student fees page). SCHOOL MEALS At FMS, we use an electronic debit system for purchasing meals or snacks. Current students will key in their student ID number into the keypad. Our 6th graders will be given their ID number on their schedules at orientation on August 26th . The debit system will allow you to purchase your student’s lunch online on a regular basis so you won’t have to worry about finding the correct change every day. The system will also track your student’s meal purchases. This information is available to you upon request from the cafeteria manager. Paying for School Meals Meal prices are as follows: breakfast is $1.65 for students and $2.25 for adults; lunch is $3.25 for students and $3.75 for adults. Milk only is $0.25 and flavored milk is $0.50. You can pay for your student's meals online using your credit card or debit card! Visit the Wenatchee School District e-funds webpage at http://www.wenatcheeschools.org/parents/e-funds for instructions on how to apply money to your child’s meal account. This is the same location you can purchase PE clothes, 6th grade camp, ASB cards, yearbooks and pay for outstanding fines.

PARTNER-VOLUNTEERS We would love to have your help in personalizing learning with FMS students. If you want to participate on a consistent basis signing up couldn’t be easier. Go to our district home page www.wenatcheeschools.org and scroll down on the front page to “Sign up as a volunteer”. Complete the form and once your background check is approved, go to the FMS office, show your ID and have them make you active in the system. Then, contact your child’s teachers to see how you can help! Once you are made active in the volunteer database, you will not need to reapply. A background check will be done automatically until you unsubscribe. If you have further questions please contact the Wenatchee Learns office at [email protected] or call 509-888-2828

URGENT! SIXTH GRADE CAMP

PARENT VOLUNTEER REQUEST Each year, sixth graders attend an overnight camp at Tall Timber near Lake Wenatchee. It’s a wonderful time and experience for the 6th grade class and their teachers to get to know one another in a relaxed and beautiful setting. This year camp is scheduled to take place on September 25-27. Camp is divided into two groups over the three days and we need many parents (both moms and dads) to volunteer for a one-night/two-day commitment to serve as “Cabin Counselors” for a small group of girls or boys. Parents who volunteer will also be asked to pay the $50 camp registration fee.

If you would like more information or would like to sign up to be a volunteer please visit the following website and enter your information http://tinyurl.com/fmscamp. Be sure

that you have followed the process for volunteering (see previous info ). If you have any camp questions please contact one of the 6th grade teachers.

7th & 8th GRADE OPEN HOUSE Our Open House this fall is scheduled for Wednesday, August 21st from 5:00-6:30. This is a great opportunity for parents to meet teachers and visit classrooms. There is no formal presentation, so come when you can between those hours. 6th grade parents are invited to the Falcon Day on August 26th where they can meet teachers and become acquainted with 6th grade expectations.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES Mark your calendars to attend parent/teacher conferences, October 30-November 1. No classes will be held during these three days. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to meet with teachers to discuss academic progress in school. More information on exact times of the conferences is forthcoming. SCHOOL ENTRANCES FMS has two primary entrances. The main entrance is the east entrance that is closest to our main office. We would appreciate any visitors coming to our school to use the east entrance during our school day. The west entrance is primarily used for buses and for bike riders. We encourage our parents to drop off and pick up their child using the east entrance. However, if you use the west entrance, please do not park your car in the bus ramp area. During the day our west entrance doors remain locked to provide additional security while school is in session. Students are instructed NOT to open these doors for adults during the day.

FMS—A SAFE SCHOOL FMS is a safe school with absolutely no tolerance for bullying or harassment. We take all threatening comments and

threatening gestures very seriously. So, DON’T! Any threatening gestures or comments may result in disciplinary action. One very important reason FMS is such a safe school is because our students report concerns about safety to the adults in our school. Parents, please discuss this with your child. We appreciate your help in making FMS a safe, orderly and inviting school. PE UNIFORMS All Wenatchee School District middle schools require students to wear PE uniforms for their physical education classes. The cost of the PE uniform is $13.00. If you wish to purchase separately, a PE shirt is $5.00 and PE shorts are $8.00. Most 6th grade students will have a PE class and need a uniform. MATH CLUB Do you enjoy and/or want to improve your math, logic and problem solving skills outside of math class? Foothills Math Club is for you! Foothills students of any grade may also choose to participate in math competitions for further fun and problem exploration. All interested students should watch for an announcement once school starts with meeting times and locations. See you soon! STUDENT ATTENDANCE Attending school is critical to student success. It is important that students arrive to school on time. If your student is absent, please contact our office by phone. If the office is not open, you may leave a message at 664-8961 ext. 22221. Those students absent or arriving late to school are UNEXCUSED if we do not receive a phone call or note from a parent. Unexcused absences are reported to our WSD Truancy Officer. PARENT VISITORS We encourage parent visits to FMS. You are welcome here! If you wish to visit however, it is required that you sign in at the office to assure your student’s safety in school. We encourage parents to have lunch with their child and friends. If you would like to visit your child’s classroom, please make arrangements with his/her teacher in advance. This is a courtesy to our staff and minimizes classroom interruptions. Please review information previously stated in this newsletter about the process for volunteering at school. Your involvement and interest in your child’s participation at FMS is a STRONG contributing factor to his/her success in school.

CELL PHONES • Students must have the Foothills Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) approval sticker on their device. Forms are available in the office which

must be completed in order to receive the sticker. • Devices will only be used for educational purposes. • Devices and earbuds/headphones may only be used in classrooms where the teacher has approved the use of devices in his or her class. They may not be used in the commons, hallways, restrooms or locker rooms. • Students may only use FMS hotspots. They may not connect to their own wireless carrier. • FMS is not responsible for damage or theft of the device. • Students will lose the privilege of bringing their own device to school if they abuse the rules. • Phones, earbuds and headphones must be out of sight once you enter school. If you are not following the cell phone expectations your phones will be confiscated. 2019 EAST COAST TRIP All 8th graders within the Wenatchee School District are invited to join the annual spring break East Coast Tour scheduled for March 26-April 3, 2020. The tour will trace the 8th grade US History timeline beginning in Boston with the events leading to the American Revolution. Following the Founding Fathers to Philadelphia, the group will visit the US Constitution Center in the heart of the historic district. A day on the battlefields of Gettysburg will be followed by four days in Washington, DC. Registration will remain open until January 1st. Students and parents are welcome to sign up. Watch for an informational meeting to be held in September. FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES Our student handbook will be posted on our website. If you would like a printed copy please contact our office and one will be sent home with your child. During the first day of school, teachers will review important aspects of the handbook. The student handbook contains important information about the expectations, activities, and policies of FMS. Knowing the information in the handbook and following the directions within it will help students experience a successful year in school. MEDICATIONS The Wenatchee School District Medication Policy allows for students in grades 6-12, with parent permission, to carry a one-day supply of over the counter medications. A more detailed outline of the policy can be located in the student handbook on our website under the student tab.

DAILY ROUTINE Our first day of school is Tuesday, August 27. Class begins at 8:00 a.m., Tuesday – Friday and on Monday at 9:30 a.m. Please be in your classroom and ready to learn

when school begins. Here are some other successful tips that will help you to get off to a strong start this school year: 1) Keep your locker neat and clean. Sloppy lockers can

slow you down and make you late to class. 2) Make time for homework. Set up a special time each

day to do your homework in a quiet place at home. 3) Prepare the night before. This will save you time in

the morning in order to get to school on time with a “positive attitude.” Students who miss the first few minutes of class, often miss teacher instructions and fall behind.

4) Make some new friends. It may seem to be a little lonely if you aren’t in the same classes with your old friends. Get to know some new people. Be friendly. Be a good listener. Get involved in school activities. Be yourself. Take an interest in others. Don’t fret about making friends right away. Building great friendships takes time.

5) When in doubt, seek out help from an adult. We are here to help you do well in school. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for assistance if you need it. We all want to be independent but we sometimes need help!

6) Come prepared with a “can do” attitude. DRESS CODE Foothills Middle School is dedicated to preserving a beneficial learning environment and assuring the safety and well-being of all students. Clothing worn at school should be made in consultation with parents. The following district guidelines are intended to assist students and parents in making reasonable choices in matters of dress. These guidelines are district guidelines which will affect all schools (K-12) in the Wenatchee School District. 1. The wearing of any covering over the head is prohibited.

This includes, but is not limited to hats, bandanas, scarves, hairnets, hoodies, etc.

2. Clothing articles that inappropriately reveal body areas of the shoulder, back, chest, waist, and upper thighs are prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to tank tops, halter tops and midriff shirts. Shirt sleeves must be the width of a dollar bill or longer. Skirts and shorts must be longer than the mid-thigh. Cut-offs, which are not hemmed, exposed underwear/undergarments, and holes in clothing exposing inappropriate body areas, and pajamas, are not permitted.

2. Become a PTSA Member. Annual dues are $15 per individual adult, $10 per additional adult household member, and $8.00 per student membership. As a member you’ll be able to vote on PTSA business, receive PTSA email updates, and be eligible for many discounts on the State PTA site such as discounted Great Wolf Lodge tickets.

3. Volunteer your time and talents by attending meetings and/or serving on a committee. 4. Enroll in the AmazonSmile program and Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchases to the charitable
