School Certificate Review
In our last Newsletter I mentioned changes to the School Certificate in 2012 and
what impact they will have on students. A number of points from the DEC Review
into the School Certificate will have impact on students in 2011 also.
Schools have been advised that for 2011, Year 10 students are to be engaged in
their learning until the end of Term 4, the same as all other students. This may have an impact on stu-
dents and family planning for this part of the school year. I advise everyone to look at their calendars
to plan for students last day for 2011 as being the 16 December date.
Year 10 students will be advised of the critical dates in a “Year 10 Newsletter” produced at the begin-
ning of Term 4. At present, parents and students are reminded of these dates:
October 10/11/12 – trial School Certificate Examinations (week 1)
November 7 – 11 School Certificate Examinations (week 5)
Junior Parent Teacher Interviews
I encourage all parents of students in Year 7/8/9/10 to attend the Parent/Teacher Interview afternoon
on Tuesday, 13 September in E-block. Letters have been sent to many parents asking them to attend
the interviews so it is important that students make booking times with their teachers.
Year 8/9 Electives 2012
Information about Year 9/10 electives will be provided to parents and stu-
dents at the Elective Information Evening to be held straight after Parent/
Teacher Interviews on 13 September. Information will be given on:
* the new School Certificate
* new electives available
* Trade Training Electives available for 2012
HSC Music Performances
On Monday night I was fortunate to be part of the audience that viewed the
HSC Music performance from students across LCoSS – Kadina, Lismore and
Richmond River schools. There were a variety of individual and group per-
formances that were professional, exhilarating and so entertaining that it was
hard to imagine that these were not professional performers. Thanks to the
LCoSS team that put together the evening – well done.
School Planning 2012
I take this opportunity to invite parents to a planning conference for the
school for 2012 – 2014. This will be held Friday, 4 November and Sat-
urday, 5 November at Lismore High. The planning conference will look
at the School Plan for these 3 years and align this with the DEC State
Plan and the North Coast Region Priority Areas. Interested parents will
have the opportunity to register for this event early next term.
Year 11 Preliminary Exit Examinations
These exams commence next week (week 9) and are an important milestone for Year 11 students.
Once completed, the students will commence their HSC courses. The attendance in examinations is
compulsory. Students have been given timetables for examinations and asked to make themselves fa-
miliar with the times and procedures set out for each examination.

Boys Netball
Lismore High Boys netball team played Macksville High school in the regional final of the state knock-
out competition last Friday. Both teams were fairly equal in skills and ability. Macksville were two goals
ahead at the end of the first quarter. By the end of the second quarter, Macksville were seven goals in
front. Lismore won the third quarter by one goal and lost the last quarter by one goal. The final score
was 29 to 22. Macksville were marginally better than Lismore High on this particular day. Macksville
shot at 59% where as Lismore had a 54% shooting average. It was an entertaining game and our
team did their absolute best to win.
A sincere thanks to Giselle Newton who did an outstanding job umpiring for us. We are very lucky to
have a national C Badge umpire available to us. Also a big thank you to Amelia Wright and Giselle
Newton who helped coach the team all through the competition. The Team is now knocked out of the
competition but the boys did really well to be in the final 20 teams in the state. Congratulations to
Toby Jeffery, Tim Jeffery, Zac Morris, Nathan White, John Wilton, Irfan Elms, Leroy Duroux, Sam Anee-
mat and Ross Campbell on learning to play the best sport of all and on the great way you represented
Lismore High during this competition. It has been a pleasure to be part of this team.

P&C Big Boys’ Breakfast
This great gathering was held for the first time last Friday morning. Dads, grandfathers, pops and un-
cles turned up with their children and were treated to a BBQ breakfast, chat and a gift from the P&C. It
was a lovely morning and I thank the P&C for their support for the school. During their time here, the
“Big Boys” had a sneak preview of the Trade Training Centre refurbishment – all were very impressed
with the state of the art facilities that are being built at our school.
With thanks,
Peter Campbell-Principal

Science and Engineering Super Challenge
Thirty four students from our School participated in the Science and Engineering Super Challenge held
in Hervey Bay. Northern Rivers Schools were grouped in with the state of Queensland for this state
final. Our Challenge was held on Tuesday the 23rd of Aug 2011 and we competed against seven other
Public and Private Schools from throughout Queensland. We went up a couple of days early and took
the opportunity to go on a whale watch tour. All the students
who chose to go had a fantastic time. We saw many pods of
whales and they were very active due to the rainy weather.
Many of the whales came very close to the boat and some were
only a metre or two away. Whales are particularly curious crea-
tures and don‟t mind putting on a performance for visitors.
Before the challenge, Mr Scott Allen told
the students they would see a lot of Pri-
vate Schools in suits and not to be in-
timidated by the way they look. He also
told them to be “very proud of who you
are and of your School”. Every student worked hard on the day and the dif-
ferent groups worked brilliantly well together as a team. All students were
challenged and gave their best to the various tasks. We all had a fabulous
day and both Teachers were very pleased with the behaviour, attitude and effort from all the students.
At half time on the day, we were coming 5th and an hour later we were coming 7th, however, when it
came to the bridge building challenge we knew we had a great
one. We were second last to have the bridge test (points given
for low weight and the weight it can carry). The bridge was
brilliant and the five ingots and bridge-buster weight breezed
across the top. We were then in first place. The only School
that could beat us now was St Peters Lutheran College who
were yet to test their bridge. They also had a great bridge and
performed almost as well as ours. We knew the results would
come down to the wire. It was very exciting hearing the
Schools being called out from 8th place to 1st place. Unfortu-
nately we were just beaten in the end.
Each of the eight challenges had a winning team for the day. LHS won the two most prestigious tro-
phies for the day, they were, Gold Fever (bridge building) and The Engineering Game (chair design).
Thank you to all the parents who allowed their children to participate in this Challenge. As Teachers
we see the greater benefit from the experience. It is not just about Science and Engineering, it‟s
about life, challenging and pushing yourself, working with others, standing up as a leader, not giving

up, achievement, bonding and so much more.
We have so many wonderful students at Lis-
more High School and they can be very proud
of themselves.
As we left the Challenge and walked back to the
bus past all the Private Schools and their own
private buses, everyone felt good about their
Public education. Many students came up to us
and asked “are you proud of us?” This said it
all. We replied “very, very proud”.

Gold Card Excursion to
‘The Green Lantern’
Students of Lismore High School who demonstrate
excellent behaviour are issued with a Gold Card and
are rewarded by being allowed to participate in sev-
eral excursions during the year.
On Monday 15th August the Gold Card students had
a great day out at the movies. They enjoyed a walk
to McDonalds where they had a snack before going
to the cinema to see The Green Lantern.
Students rated the movie 3 stars out of a possible 5
and all agreed that the message conveyed was that
„willpower overcomes fear‟. Students had a great
reward day and are looking forward to the next excursion.

National Science Week
Macquarie University Indigenous Science Education Program
On Tuesday 16th August 2011, during National Science Week, 15 of our Year 9 and 10 indigenous stu-
dents worked with Macquarie University staff, at Casino High School, to train as demonstrators for the
Science Program to be held here at Lismore High the following day.
This leadership opportunity for the indigenous students allowed them to demonstrate science experi-
ments, including slime making, elephant‟s toothpaste, disappearing ink, turmeric magic, and others, to
a range of students from Years 7 – 10.
The interactive displays provided an engaging and rewarding experience for all the students involved.
