GOAL ONE Meet current and long-term financial needs of The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg (TAP) by increasing earned and contributed revenues 3% annually to fully fund our organization’s aspirations.
Strategy 1: Determine working capital needs for the next 3-5 years. Strategy 2: Maintain financial management practices essential to be financially strong and effective. Strategy 3: Increase earned revenue to reflect facility rental market value. Strategy 4: Inspire donors to increase grants and contributions to our United Arts Fund, Endowments, and Planned Giving to $2 million by 2020. Strategy 5: Assess and present the case for Spartanburg County’s arts and cultural assets as a core economic and education contributor.
Spartanburg is nationally recognized as a unique and vibrant cultural community that inspires creativity and collaboration.
GOAL TWO Strengthen our cultural sector and foster a more vibrant community through the effective utilization and investment of all TAP’s resources.
Strategy 1: Track current use of all TAP resources – funding, facilities, and leadership – to further our mission and vision. Strategy 2: Assess and revise our grant making portfolio to be more inclusive, collaborative, impactful, and supportive of the broader cultural sector with measurable outcomes that align with TAP’s vision and mission and advance the community’s strategic priorities. Strategy 3: Maximize capacity of facilities and services to provide an outstanding experience to all customers, internal and external. Strategy 4: Develop, leverage and deploy the knowledge, experience, and influence within our organization’s staff and volunteers to advance our vision and mission. Strategy 5: Leverage TAP’s positive reputation and leadership, and position these strengths for the greatest impact and benefit for Spartanburg’s cultural sector.
GOAL THREE Inspire and engage our community as patrons, artists, and donors by consistently communicating a clear message of the role, scope, and impact of TAP.
Strategy 1: Clarify and consolidate name and messaging for The Arts Partnership, Chapman Cultural Center, and the United Arts Fund. Strategy 2: Develop and execute a comprehensive annual marketing and communications plan that maximizes on our message and is inclusive of Spartanburg’s comprehensive cultural sector. Strategy 3: Conduct an annual orientation of all TAP and Partner volunteers, board members, and staff to build relationships, disseminate key messaging, and share best practices. Strategy 4: Develop and execute an ongoing and intentional campaign targeted to new residents and businesses to educate about TAP and Spartanburg’s cultural sector.
GOAL FOUR All residents of Spartanburg County have equitable access to STEAM education and outreach opportunities to participate in creative experiences in neighborhoods and schools.
Strategy 1: Inspire new collaborations and partnerships in the cultural sector and across sectors to reach broader audiences and develop shared services. Strategy 2: Expand cultural experiences outside of traditional cultural facilities. Strategy 3: Expand Advantage Arts & Science K-12 Education Portfolio to include early childhood K2-K4 programing to support kindergarten readiness.
Founded in 1968 as The Arts Council of Spartanburg, today TAP is the oldest and largest countywide arts agency in the state of South Carolina, conducting the 19th largest United Arts Fund Campaign in the United States. The current budget is $2.1 million.
In the past decade, TAP has leveraged more than $54 million to strengthen the cultural sector and create a community where artists and creative organizations can thrive. TAP provided critical leadership for the planning, development and funding for the construction of Chapman Cultural Center, which opened in 2007. TAP owns and operates the facility as a co-location of multiple nonprofit cultural organizations, welcoming more than 272,000 people annually to discover, experience and celebrate science, history and visual and performing arts all in one location.
With its home in Chapman Cultural Center, TAP’s work ripples throughout the Upstate through the delivery of these core programs and services: • United Arts Fundraising • Grant making • Cultural facility development, ownership and management • Arts education programs and scholarships • Marketing services for the cultural sector • Combined box office for the cultural sector • Comprehensive cultural planning • Community event and festival production • Convening and supporting the cultural sector • Advocate and spokes-agency for arts, culture, and the creative economy
It has been proven over and over that progress happens when there is proper planning, and it was time for The Arts Partnership (TAP) to look ahead and plan for continued success and momentum towards 2020. In 2015, TAP engaged Raven Consulting Group to guide the organization through a process to develop a new strategic plan. Our Board of Trustees and staff reviewed prior strategic planning documents, identified national trends and best practices, and evaluated all current activities and programs of TAP. We held focus groups and gained individual input through surveys with feedback on the organization’s present status as well as future priorities and direction. In May, we held a two-day board retreat to conduct a visioning process; address strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; confirm our mission; and establish goals and strategies for the next five years. As your leading local arts agency and Cultural Center, we are excited to present our strategic vision and goals, as approved by our Board of Trustees on Sept. 8, 2015. Please take some time to review this plan. Together, we will achieve this dynamic vision and reach our bold goals. Thank you for your loyal support!

Congratulations to all seven award recipients from SCAEA…Spartanburg is leading in Arts Education in South Carolina, as evidenced at the annual convention of the South Carolina Arts Education Association. Out of nine annual awards, Spartanburg educators took home seven awards! Chapman Cultural Center’s very own Arts Education Director, Ava Hughes, was one of the deserving recipients, bringing home the Dr. Deborah Smith Hoffman Mentor Award. Executive Director of Spartanburg Art Museum, Elizabeth Goddard, was recognized as Museum Educator of the Year, and other Spartanburg County educators (Sarah Warner, District 7; Elizabeth Walsh, District 7; Cindy Riddle, District 1; Jodi Wright, District 1; Susanne Gunter, Converse College) received awards for their contributions to the arts, too. The arts are strong in Spartanburg, thanks leaders like these!
The arts for every child…Because many studies have shown that socially and economically disadvantaged students who have high levels of arts engagement are more likely to graduate, be engaged in academics, and be better readers, we consistently look at our programs to eliminate the gap. Thanks to a grant from The Spartanburg County Foundation, students in 10 additional Title I Schools in the county will be exposed to professional performing artists and artist residencies in their schools! With a choice of either a Muse Machine school membership or a one-week artist residency, school leaders are happily including more arts in their schools. Here are examples of activities happening throughout the county: · Residency by poet/creative writer Chuck Sullivan at Mary H. Wright Elementary School · Orisirisi African Folklore/Music group performing at Cooley Springs-Fingerville Elementary School · Bluegrass artist Charles Pettee performing at Spartanburg Preparatory School · Ballet Spartanburg performing at Hendrix Elementary · And many more experiences scheduled throughout the school year!
Dr. James O. Ray honored as Education Champion of 2015…At our Cultural Champions luncheon on November 6, retired School District 3 Superintendent Dr. James O. Ray was honored as Education Champion of 2015. An avid supporter of arts education throughout his long and distinguished career, Dr. Ray led support of the Muse Machine program from the beginning by ensuring that every school in District 3 participates in the Muse Machine program! Dr. Ray has served on our Board of Trustees and on many board committees. As a surprise for Dr. Ray, students from Middle School of Pacolet
Chorus performed under the direction of Gene Vanderford and accompanist Jackie Harris at the luncheon. Thank you, Dr. Ray, for your continued support of strong arts education programs in Spartanburg!

Cognitive Dissonance collects nine artists who, in the words of curator Anthony Merino, “hold a contrary view.” Merino holds that societies, like ceramics, are only as perfect as the materials out of which they are made. Since human beings are the raw material out of which societies are crafted, and no human being is perfect, one might be tempted to take a dim view of our society. But the artists selected in Cognitive Dissonance affirm through their work that imperfection is essential—however, what imperfection is essential to, is open to interpretation. The works of these nine artists, like our societies and institutions, are lively experiments both short-lived and perpetual.
Some Abstractiion Required is a group exhibition featuring the work of nine contemporary artists. Viewers are challenged to consider science and mathematics in conjunction with the visual arts. This exhibition displays a variety of mixed media techniques, including painting, collage, altered books, epoxy clay, and site-specific installation. Some of the themes addressed by the objects include the duality of chance and precision, mathematical systems and patterns, and altering the viewer’s perception of space.

There are many studies documenting the importance of studying the creative arts: increased creativity working as a team member creative problem solving and on, and on, and on…But JOY is just as important! Students who participate in the arts are more engaged and more hopeful for the future. This year, we are using our “Joy Meter” to measure a student’s sense of well-being before participating in an arts experience, and again after participating. In our first Joy Meter experiment, there was a marked increase in the level of joy! Students at Cleveland Academy of Leadership participated in a creative writing/poetry residency with artist Chuck Sullivan showed a remarkable increase in joy. Before the activities, 39% rated themselves as Happy or Very Happy. After the activities, 96% rated themselves as Happy or Very Happy! So, the next time you are enjoying beautiful music, theatre, or creating art of your own, you’ll be increasing your own sense of joy and wellbeing!
Very Sad Sad O.K. Happy Very Happy
