The new mobile phone policy comes into effect from Term 1, 2020, and requires that students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely put away in their lockers during school hours and while on the school premises. We will be arranging year level assemblies with students throughout Term 4 to discuss the changes that will be implemented. The role of technology We live in an exciting and technology-rich world and mobile phones are an important modern day communication tool. The school acknowledges that access to a mobile phone by students is important to many of our families in providing a sense of safety for their child while travelling to and from school, and for confirming or changing after school arrangements. Managing the impact of mobile phones Mobile phones often create disruptions and distractions in classrooms. Establishing a mobile phone free zonehelps teachers to establish and maintain a focused and productive teaching and learning environment. Research has found that mobile phones can be disruptive in classrooms and open to misuse at school (e.g. accessing inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and unauthorised photography). Additionally, research shows that the unregulated presence of mobile phones in classrooms can undermine studentscapacity to think, learn, remember, pay attention and regulate emotion. A summary of recent, relevant research is available on the Department of Education and Trainings website. At recess and lunchtime our school also values the opportunity for students to communicate with each other face-to-face or be involved in activities rather than being focused on a device, particularly when using the device to engage with social media. For a small number of students with particular health needs, an exception to the policy may be granted. Please contact the school if you would like to discuss this. Emergency situations In the event of an emergency or if you need to contact your child, I ask that families contact the staff in the school office who will pass on a message as needed. The school acknowledges that this new policy may require some adjustments. As such, I ask for the support of all our families, staff and students in its implementation. We are presenting our new Mobile Phone Policy to School Council before the end of the year. The policy will be found on our school website after it is endorsed by school council. 24 hr STUDENT ABSENCE LINE 5241 0090 Parents only to call to report student s name, house/ form, reason for absence, and date. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Mobile Phone Policy On 26 June 2019, the Minister for Education, the Hon. James Merlino MP, announced a new mobile phone policy for every government school in Victoria. Establishing a ‘mobile phone free zone’ helps teachers to establish and maintain a focused and productive teaching and learning environment. Research has found that mobile phones can be disruptive in classrooms and open to misuse at school (e.g. accessing inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and unauthorised photography). Additionally, research shows that the unregulated presence of mobile phones in classrooms can undermine students’ capacity to think, learn, remember, pay attention and regulate emotion. A summary of recent, relevant research is available on the Department of Education and Training’s website.

Managed Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy All students are expected to bring their own electronic device for use in their classes and this will become more important as mobile phones will not be available for use. We have a BYOD Policy, which has most junior students purchase a laptop that is school endorsed. Others students, particularly senior students, choose to bring other devices. To support the BYOD policy, the school has a small number of school laptops that will be given to students for the day in emergency circumstances. We need the support of all families to ensure that students are prepared for school with their devices from the start of 2020. If you require further information please contact the General Office. Use of earplugs and earphones In addition, students will not be permitted to use personal earplugs or earphones with their learning devices, as this also l imits collaborative interactions both in the yard and during class. Class of 2019 Our Year 12 Exams are nearly completed. Feedback from the supervisors has been extremely positive. It is wonderful to hear that our students have taken the opportunity to see their teachers for extra support as they prepared for their exams. We look forward to celebrating with the Class of 2019 and their families at our forthcoming Graduation Ceremony. SEALP Information Night We recently had our Year 7 2020 SEALP Information Night. There were many new and existing families who attended the evening. They listened to all the speakers who gave valuable information about Belmont High School, particularly regarding our SEAL program and the experiences that the students will have while in the program and as a member of our learning community. I look forward to meeting each one of the students that will start in 2020 and feel confident that they will be well supported in the transition process. Awards Ceremony I invite all our community to attend our Awards Ceremony on 16th December at Deakin University Waterfront. This is a time when we celebrate the achievements of all our students and acknowledge the students that have demonstrated our school values throughout the year. Many community organisations join us in this special event. I would like to thank the organisations that sponsor many of our students and offer sponsorship awards. Sandra Eglezos, Principal

MATHS MATTERS This year we have had many students participate in different Mathematics Competitions, which have been coordinated by both National & Local Mathematics Organizations. In term 1 we had 17 students in Years 7-9 participate in the Computational & Algorithmic Thinking task, commonly called the CAT. This CAT, which is organized by the Australian Mathematics Trust, is a one-hour problem-solving task, which seeks to identify students with Computer Programming potential. We were thrilled to discover that many of our students gained outstanding results, as we gained 9 Credits, 2 Distinctions and 2 High Distinctions. To gain a High Distinction you needed to be ranked higher than the 95th Percentile. Archie Mills (Yr8) and Ned Parker (Yr 9) both gained High Distinctions. Congratulations to Archie & Ned! I would like to thank Mr Michael Wamstaker for coordinating this CAT at BHS, and I would also like to congratulate all our students who completed this task, which enables them to enhance and build on their ability in Mathematics and IT. In August, Seventy Five BHS students competed in the Australian Mathematics Competition, which is also organized by the Australian Mathematics Trust. This competition involves students working through variety of Mathematical questions in a set time. It was great to see how the students involved approached this competition with great endeavor. We recently received the students’ results and certificates and I would like to congratulate the following high achievers. Distinctions Ethan Hearn (Year 7) Connor Molloy (Year 7) Oscar Waring (Year 8) Ella Howard (Year 8) Allison Hollins (Year 8) High Distinctions: Lily Pitman-Jones (Year 8) Congratulations to Eric Iversen, as he was awarded a Prize for the Australian Mathematics Competition as he gained a ranking on the 100th percentile! On October 25th we had two teams of Year 10 students compete in the Deakin University Mathematics Contest. The students involved were Riley Rogers, Paddy Healey, Tomek Wallis, Aaron Pagels, D’Artagnon Reed-Brockman, Will Koopman, Jeremy Partridge and Diya Patel. On the day these students competed in team and solo challenges and competed against 19 other teams from schools in the Geelong & Western Victoria Region. Riley Rogers gained an award for being ranked 2nd in the Solo Challenge. A great achievement, well done Riley! Thanks to Mr Craig White & Mr Dan Kasperovic for supporting their respective teams on the day. Congratulations to all our students who embraced all these Mathematics activities that were offered in 2019. I encourage more BHS students to embrace these opportunities in 2020. Year 11 & 12 Early Commencement Program This week Year 10, 11 and select Year 9 students received their Early Commencement Program timetables. For parents/guardians who are not familiar with the ECP it is two full weeks of classes to best prepare students for 2020. In these classes teachers will be starting next years coursework which means it is imperative that students place importance on attending every lesson ready to learn. Attendance will be carefully recorded by teachers and used to help determine satisfactory exposure to coursework. To clarify, please see below important points from the schools VCE attendance policy.

Students are only allowed to miss four lessons* without approval per subject, per semester without penalties being applied.

*One double period is counted as one lesson

Approved leave includes that with a medical certificate, bereavement leave, leave for a school excursion or other leave as approved by the VCE Leader. It does NOT include ‘Parent Choice’ or ‘Illness’ without a certificate.

It is the students responsibility to follow up on work missed with their teacher in a timely manner. Year 11 to 12 ECP runs from Monday November 18 – Friday November 29. Year 10 to 11 ECP runs from Monday November 25 – Friday December 6. Year 9 or 10 students who are accelerating into a Year 11 or 12 subject and have a clash with their normally scheduled class should prioritise ECP and make their regular teacher aware they will be absent. Ms Jess Watson VCE Leader

CANTEEN NEWS From the beginning of 2020 all lunch orders will be accepted via QKR (see information and instructions on the school website). There will be no before-school or recess lunch orders taken. Download the QKR App and follow instructions. Closing time for orders will be 9.00am. SCHOOL BUS TRAVEL It is important that all students travel with a valid myki, and that their myki is touched on and off during every trip. This includes students who use a six-monthly or yearly pass. Myki usage data is vital in determining loading levels and information on frequently used stops. Moreover, it is a PTV requirement that all students travel with a valid myki. Students caught fare evading risk receiving an $83.00 infringement.

MANGO NEWS Year 12s celebrated their last day at school on Tuesday 22nd October with the Celebration Day concert. They sported some fantastic costumes and we are very proud of all of their achievements during their time at BHS. This was further to Valedictory Dinner which was on Friday 18th. Jacob and Ella, with the help of some wonderful film productions and PowerPoint presentations, hosted the evening. There was great food and company. Mr Pugh returned to say good-bye to the group as well as Mrs Rochester and Mr Dooley.

VCE exams are in full swing as we write this newsletter entry and our 12 Mango (and some Year 11 Mangos) now understand the full pressure of an exam timetable! Year 12 Graduation on Monday 25th November will be a night to look forward to and we thank Mrs Watson for her wonderful leadership in the role of VCE Coordinator this year and wish her well as she undertakes to host the evening and finally farewell our wonderful Year 12s. Where has the year gone? Nicki Badii, Grace Brown and Bowen Prosser (11 Mango) undertook their VCE VET Music Industry Performance exams Thurs October 17th. What a talented group of students! With a focus on Year 12, Ms McKenzie, Mrs McAndrew and myself have begun the process of catching up with our Year 11 cohort to see how they found this year and to hear about their thoughts for 2020 when they will step up and become our House Leaders. We can see an exciting year ahead. Early Commencement will be an exciting way to finish the year and we wish our Year 11s and 10’s all the best and of course, Year 7, 8 and 9 Mango are preparing for the end of year CATs. It’s a time to maintain focus and continue to learn and grow.

Go Mango!

Music News Last Thursday Beginning Band travelled through the wild weather to the Hawthorn Performing Arts Centre, where they lunched at the Arts Centre, enjoyed the exhibitions at the NGV, and rounded the day off with a performance in the Novice section of the Victorian Schools Band Festival. Their performance was fantastic, very polished, and they worked with great focus in their on stage tutorial. Many thanks to Liam Sharp who made time in the midst of his Year 12 exam preparations to attend the event, to conduct the band, and even to participate in a conducting tutorial with one of the adjudicators! Thanks also to Donna Zaharopoulos, who prepared the group so well, and congratulations to the students who made the day so much fun.

On the same day, students from Southern Cross Grammar visited Belmont High School and worked with our Intermediate Band students. For these students, it was their first experience working in a large concert band setting, and all who participated enjoyed the chance to meet new musicians and to mentor each other. Thanks to Amanda Linton and Rohan Laird for facilitating the workshop, and to Chris Henzgen for assisting with the workshop.
