Education Week Stories: Dear parents and carers We had an amazing Education Week with many visitors to classrooms. We have a few stories to share with you this week. These activities can also be done at home with your children. One activity was about writing a story using a character, setting and it required a solution. Annalee and her aunty wrote an imaginative story together, ‘The Princess that turned into a tree’. Tulia and Fetima also wrote a joint story, ‘The witch that fell in the lake.’ In Ms Caruso’s class, Ecrin and Russell also found the character, the setting and the problem in a book they are studying called, ‘The very Itchy Bear.’ The children loved having their family members visitng the classroom and getting ideas of activites theycan do at home with them. The Princess That Turned into a Tree

There once was a beautiful princess who went to the moon. She found a bright green, sparkling ring and she put it on. Suddenly her arm turned into a branch. Next her hair turned into bright green leaves. She started carrying as her feet turned into roots. She cried and cried because she didn’t know what to do. When suddenly her spaceship heard her cry and came flying over the top of her and sprinkled fairy dust. Then magically she turned back into a beautiful princess. Annalee Jordan

The Witch Who Fell in the Lake

One stormy night there was an evil witch who was curious, ugly and enchanted. The evil witch lived in an old, disgusting and haunted castle. The witch was busy making a potion that could make a beautiful lake. As she was making her lake potion she put too many quail feathers and frog eyes into her potion. The extra ingredients made thing explode and so the lake exploded out of her huge pot. She tripped over in her high heels and fell into the lake. She was drowning down to the bottom of the lake. Along came a man ands saw a hand popping out of the top of the lake, so he grabbed the evil witches hand pulled her out. The witch was coughing and spitting out water. Often we think about what does good learner looks like. On Friday afterschool I saw a wonderful example of this as the students had their books open and were reading. Reading is a most important skill and it is fabulous to see children reading. If you can also sit with your children, hear them read and discuss the content, your children will be great learners. STUDENT ATTENDANCE The Education Department requires all schools to contact parents/guardians on the day of a student’s absence when the student absence is unexplained. This will help ensure the safety of school-aged children during school hours and ensure that schools are supported in their duty of care obligations. To this end we have employed an Attendance Officer Mrs Josie Falani and an Attendance Consultant Ms Zita Pinda. Together they will assist teachers and support parents and families in promoting students attending school every day. Mrs Josie Falani will ring home on the day a student is absent.
