on what they thought was an island and called it after the mythic island of California, hoping to find gold and precious stones

• California is a peninsula that faces the Pacific Ocean between latitude 42 degrees north (at the border of the American state of Oregon) and latitude 32 degrees north (at the border of the Mexican state of Baja California Norte)

• Earliest Inhabitants, The Native Americans, had so many languages, tribes, tribelets, and these autonomous communities offered a paradigm of linguistic and cultural diversity for the rest of the world
