CALIFORNIA CYBER INNOVATION CHALLENGE Date: Saturday, June 23 - Monday, June 25 Location: California Cybersecurity Institute at Camp San Luis Obispo, California The California Cybersecurity Institute (CCI) of San Luis Obispo, California is excited to announce the launch of the 2018 California Cyber Innovation Challenge (CCIC). The CCIC is a statewide high school cybersecurity competition designed to introduce more students to the field of cybersecurity. It provides unique opportunities for businesses to proactively address their cybersecurity skills gaps while also ex- panding access to technology career pathways for all Californians. This year’s challenge will take place in a medical office scenario at the California Cybersecurity Institute and will focus on both the ethical and tech- nical issues of a ransomware attack on a medical facility. This year’s competition highlights the challenges of securing healthcare information and devices due to the growing importance of protecting the progress of medical technology against impending cyberthreats. The Scenario Silverstone Medical Center, a military hospital located at Camp San Luis Obispo, is under attack. An anonymous hacker broke into the hospital database and stole all patient files. The hacker created a malware device set to go off in a certain number of hours unless he receives 10 bitcoins, approximately $100,000. If he does not receive the money, all the information will be deleted, effectively sending the hospital into an emergency shut down and resulting in major loss of life hospitalwide. The military brought in a special group of forensic investigators to stop the malware from being released and the information deleted. The malware device requires six codes to stop it. If a false code is entered, then the device will reduce the five hours of allotted time. To learn more, contact Danielle Borrelli at [email protected] or 805-756-1341. Register now at bit.ly/CCIC18.
