It was built as a connection between the Atlantic and Pacific

Ocean.

Before the dam was constructed, cargo ships

needed to travel around the South American continent to

reach their Pacific Ocean destinations. The canal was

built as a shortcut.

The construction of the canal was one of the largest civil

engineering projects in history.
