2. ValleyRegion

  • The Valley region is a flat area of land that is surrounded by mountains.

3. The Valley region is a good place for farming,because it gets water and rich soil. 4. MountainRegion

  • The industries of the mountainregion are centered around it's forests and minerals.

5. It's trees are used for timber . 6. DesertRegion

  • The Desert region is richinminerals-metals and othermaterials that are dugfrom the earth.

7. Coast Region

  • The Coastregion iswheremostpeoplelive.

8. Thestate's Coast region provides resources for many kinds of jobs. 9. Sir Francis Drake

  • Sir Francis Drake sailed north along California's Coast. He found a small bay near what today is calledSan Fransisco andnamed it Nova Albion.

  • In 1542Juan Cabrillo sailed north to what is now Mexico to find a route to Asia. He explored what is now San Diego,Cape San Martin,and San Miguel Islands.

  • James Cook became a well known sailor, explorer, and mapmaker. Hejoined Britain's Navy. Cook mapped the Coastlines of New Zealand and Eastern Australia.

12. Sebastian Vizcaino

  • In 1602 Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcainoexplored the area from what is now San Diego and also what today is Monterey. He made maps of the Coast that wereused by other explorers.

13. Father Serra

  • In 1749 Father Serra left Spain tobegin missionarywork . After spending some years in Mexico, Serra traveled north to set up missions. One of the missions was named San Diego de Alcala.

14. Gaspar De Portola

  • Gaspar De Portola worked with Father Serra on the missions. He helped on the missionsby teaching catholicism to the Indians. He became a priest there.

15. Missions

  • Missions are buildings and churches that teach Indians catholicism. Indians at the missions had to make pottery,farm,and to take care of animals.

16. Ranchos

  • A Rancho is a farm. Indians that were eventually set free didn't know what to do. Sense they were so great at cow handling that they became the first cowboys. They worked and lived at the ranchos.

17. Presidios

  • Presidiosare forts . These forts protect the missions and keep Russians out. Presidios are outside of missions so they can protect them. Soldiers live at the Presidios.

18. Pueblos

  • Pueblos are clay buildings where people farm. The people that farm there give the food to the Presidios. The parents of the soldiers live and work at the Pueblos.

19. John Sutter

  • John Sutter was from Switzerland. He made a fort called Sutters Fort. He built Sutters Fort in Sacramento. He used this fort to sell supplies to settlers.

20. Jedediah Smith

  • Jedediah Smith led the firstgroup of American trappers in1826. They came through the Utah and Mojave deserts.

21. John Bidwell

  • John Bidwell helped organize the first wagon train to California from Independence,Missouri,in 1841. He also found gold and bought a large ranch north of Sacramento.

22. John C. Fremont

  • John C. Fremont was an explorer of the West and a soldier. He made accurate maps of the West for the U.S. Government and pioneers. He also led U.S. troopsin California's Bear Flag Revolt.

23. 49'ers

  • 49'ers came to California in 1849. Life as a miner was hard work. Miners had a land claim that gave them a right to mine in an area. Panning for gold was slow,boring ,and sometimes dangerous work.

24. Sam Brannan

  • Sam Brannan was an entrepreneur who made money from the Gold Rush. He bought mining tools to sell them to gold seekers in San Fransisco. He also became California's first millionaire.

25. Levi Strauss

  • Levi Strauss was an entrepreneur. He thought that miners needed tough pants for mining for gold. He also retrieved denim pants and started to sell them.

26. Ivan Kuskov

  • Ivan Kuskov built Fort Ross in1812. He also leda group of Russian settlers and native Alaskan fur trappers.

27. Mary Tape

  • Mary Tape was a Chinese immigrant. She lived in San Fransisco in thelate 1800s. She was mad that her Chinese American daughter couldn't addend public school.

28. Biddy Mason

  • Biddy Mason was born into slavery in 1818. In 1851 Mason's owner took her to California where there was no slavery. Eventually Bitty Mason fought for her right to be free from slavery.

29. James Beckwourth

  • James Beckwourth was an African American guide. He worked for fur traders in the 820s. He also lived with the CrowIndians for about 6years. He also led settlers to California.

30. Bernarda Ruiz

  • Bernarda Ruiz held a Peace Meeting between Mexico and the United States. After the Peace Meeting shehad held the war between Mexico and the United States stopped.

31. Helen Hunt Jackson

  • Helen Hunt Jackson saw how badly the California Indians were being treated. Jackson wrought a novel about how the California Indians called Ramona.

32. American Mexican War

  • Big changes were happening in California before the Gold Rush appeared. A group of Americans started a revolt against Mexico. In 1848 the US had won the war.

33. Autobiography

  • My name is Mae. I am in 4 thgrade, and my teacher is Mr. Greenfield. My favorite animal is a giraffe. Pink is my favorite color. I have to pets named Strawberryand Sasha. I want to be a chef when I grow up.
