Awards and honor scores are now acceptable on just one lane, and frankly, this just makes the game that much easier for bowlers to increase the tally on their perfect games, 800 series and even 900 series! Bad, bad, bad!

These new rules could be rescinded as the safety guidelines regarding CO-VID-19 are modified – so it could be a change that doesn’t last very long, and for the sake of the game, let’s hope it doesn’t.

The Frame GameGM Frank Ross of AMF Rocket Bowl sent me this sign up form for league bowlers want-ing to attend The Frame Game pilot taping back in 1985.

Looking back to 1985…

Does Anyone Remember The Frame Game?by Dave Williams

Those of you that enjoy The Game Show Network and have been around the game of ten pins for a while, might remember a bowling related show that was designed by Bernstein/Hovis Productions, in as-sociation with the Taft En-tertainment Company and MGM Studios, and known as “The Frame Game.”

Ken Lowman, former editor of the California Bowling News, made men-tion of the show in The Low Man Report, in September of 1985, when he compared the new production to the famous Jackpot Bowling, with host Milton Berle, that premiered on January 9, 1959. It was on this show in 1961 that professional bowler Therm Gibson won $75,000, which adjusted for inflation would be worth almost $650,000 today!

It is surprising to note that Leo Durocher was the host for the first two epi-sodes of Jackpot Bowling, followed by Mel Allen and Bud Palmer, before the network finally settled on Milton Berle… with Chick Hearn providing the play-by-play! Chick Hearn went on to become perhaps the most famous basketball an-nouncer of all time with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he broadcast an unbelievable 3,338 consecutive broadcasts on radio and television, beginning in 1961.

Jackpot Bowling initially aired from T-Bowl, a bowling center that still exists in the hamlet of Wayne, New Jersey, but moved to Hollywood Legion Lanes in Hollywood for the 1960 season. Ken comments in The Low Man Report, “The wish that another show of this type would again air has been voiced on numerous occasions by many of today’s proprietors who remember the good old days.”

Lowman, an eternal optimist that I enjoyed chatting with almost every Friday afternoon during my time in the San Fernando Valley, felt that The Frame Game might be the answer to the proprietors wishes. He mentioned that Art Flem-ing of Jeopardy fame had been touted as the host of the new format that would involve a professional bowler, a celebrity guest star, and league bowlers.

Dick Weber (who else?) had been selected as the first professional bowler for the pilot filming and first show. Ken goes on to say, “League bowlers will be selected from the audience to play for cash and prizes. A car was mentioned as one of the prizes, as well as merchandise from AMF and others.”

AMF Rocket Bowl in Chatsworth was selected as the first center to participate, by inviting 150 of their league members to the pilot filming; followed by Corbin Bowl of Tarzana, and Grand Central Bowl of Glendale, in succeeding weeks. Bus transportation was to be provided by the production company from the host bowling center, but in the case of AMF Rocket Bowl, the event was postponed. That’s where my knowledge about this promotion ends, and why I ask the question - Does Anyone Remember the Frame Game?

Ken mentions in his column, “I have seen the stage set designer’s drawing and it is spectacular. I can think of no reason that this production cannot be a complete success and a great benefit to the game. This show has the stamp of quality and excitement that should draw hosts of non-bowlers to the tube and eventually to bowling centers to give our game a try.”

While researching further, I noticed from word searches that Bernstein/Hovis had success in bringing forward new game shows. Their biggest success was “Anything for the Money,” with Fred Travalena, that originally aired in 1984, followed by Lingo in 1987, and Yahtzee in 1988. The Game Show Network advanced their own version of Lingo in 2002, with host Chuck Woolery, but there’s no information on the world wide web about the fate of The Frame Game.

pair each night. Lane 7 might play a lot tighter than 8, and scores might reflect that. What if you get stuck on Lane 7, and you’re hoping to open up the lanes?

Bowlers like to complain about bad lanes already, but when stuck on a “horrible” lane, you’re looking at tempers flaring and a lack of fun. Even worse is that you’re compet-ing against bowlers that aren’t bowling on the same lanes as you anymore. Some nights we’re going to bowl bad – but our opponents bail us out because they were even worse on that bad pair of the house that week.

Many dread bowling on corner lanes, and what is worse: the odd or even lane? What if your opponent gets the good lane? How about if you watch them strike all day on a lane that looks like it would’ve broken down in your favor? Sounds frustrating to me.

While working at Saddleback Lanes I have met a handful of bowlers who specifically request to bowl on odd-numbered lanes. One specifically is a bowler named Tim Jones, who bowls in the center’s Practice League. If I don’t have an odd-numbered lane open, he will not bowl, period; even if his Practice League Card expires that night. He just will not do it.

He will have to bowl on an even-numbered lane at some point given the safety guidelines laid out by Gold Cup Bowl-ing in Warner Robins, Georgia. They are putting a lane of space in between every group, and perhaps that’s what the solution might be during league night too.

But now think about the bowling center. A 32-lane center is now completely booked if a 16-team or higher league is bowling.

In a time where bowlers are itching to go bowl, and Americans are getting ready to jump at the opportunity to go out and have fun again, this could be bad for business.

Squads are the smart way to go here, but not on one lane, but a pair. Don’t take away the league-bowling experience.

By allowing teams to bowl on one lane is a very bad idea, USBC. Imagine eight bowlers within a typical bowler’s area. Lots of older centers needing to be updated have little to no space for 6-10 bowlers to hang out in, and hav-ing teams speed up a pace while crowding up two teams together is a recipe for disaster. Have you ever watched collegiate bowling? They bowl Baker format games, where five bowlers line up, and each bowler takes their turn; bowls and then heads to the back of the line to wait for their second frame. After a game they switch lanes. But the bowler’s area is so crowded! No way social distancing can be practiced in that way!

Back to the idea of squads. One team on a pair of lanes, with the left team hanging out on its odd lane, and the right team posting up on the even lane. Sure you might get a bad pair, but you’re begging to hang out with your bud-dies, right? Hanging around them, or at the table behind the lane, without worrying about another team hogging up your space sounds ideal, right? Bowlers would still cross lanes as normal, requiring the usual skill for bowling. It’ll feel like a prebowl.

The best part about it though is the pace. Since league would wrap up sooner, centers could allot their 16 lanes they’d typical set aside for league to eight teams across two different squad times across their usual three-hour slot. The league bowlers win, the centers win and open play bowlers win too – because they aren’t turned away.

At the end of the day this is about everybody having fun. Bowlers are ready to have fun, and I know our centers are ready to let them while staying safe and cautious.

Nothing has been decided on in terms of the centers I work at, in case anybody is wondering. All these is specula-tion and hearsay according to what USBC agreed to a few days ago.

If you too are unhappy with the USBC has done, let your secretary know to voice out to your local association today!

That said, we are one day closer to returning to the lanes, and I, as well as everybody else at the bowl are ready to see all the good times start to roll once more. See you soon!

bowlers an inexpensive option to compete. My tourna-ments are under $60 to enter no matter the format. There are plenty of handicap clubs, but no scratch clubs unless you turn professional. I’ve filled that gap. If someone new wants to spend $55 to bowl, they can. If someone experi-enced wants to spend $600 in brackets and sidepots, they can do that also.” Harley’s Tournament Club scratch tour-naments are open to all adult bowlers. Juniors can bowl the Singles events provided they sign a waiver. Tourna-ments are scratch 6 or 8 gamers, Doubles or Singles.

Harley’s Tournament Club does not have a TOC at the end of the season, they have a points system and year-end payout to the Top 16 in points. Added Good, “I don’t think a TOC is fair to someone who may have led the points the entire year and had one bad tournament in the TOC and lose out on hundreds of dollars in year-end money.”

His events draw bowlers mostly from California but occasionally a Las Vegas or Arizona bowler will come to compete. He’s had bowlers from all over our state from Sacramento to Goleta to San Bernardino to Orange Coun-ty come bowl. Robert Smith is a regular and he’s also had Steve Smith and Michael Haugen, Jr. enter. Bobby Campagnale supports Andre’s events as well, “I enjoy his tournaments because he has creative/different formats/sea-son points race and he always puts his events on patterns which are challenging which makes it fun. I’ve bowled his tournament series for I think 7-8 years now and will continue to as long as he has them and he’s a great guy!”

Andre ran 9 of these events last year and he planned to do the same for 2020—9 events and an additional tourna-ment in August that was separate from the club.

His tournament sponsors are Ebonite International and Strike 12 Creations (I use EBI still as the contract was signed with that name before they were acquired by Brunswick).

In his free time, Andre enjoys golf. He’s happy to have a job to go to work every day and just recently got an offer to go from a contract worker to a full-time employee with Amgen, which takes some of the day-to-day stress off but, he’s currently in the same mode as all the other tourna-ment directors trying to see how COVID-19 pans out. He has planned to have two upcoming tournaments, June 6th (6 gamer – Doubles) and July 11th (6 gamer – Singles), which are his two last tournaments of the season at Har-ley’s Valley Bowl in Simi Valley (check-in at 5pm; bowl at 6pm), but at this time does not feel confident the June event will take place. For more information on Andre’s HVB Tournament Club, go to their Facebook page “Har-ley’s Valley Bowl Tournament Club” or you can contact Andre direct at 805/415-7018. COVID-19 is not going to take the love of putting on scratch events away from Andre Good!!
