San Bernardino, California San Bernardino is a city located in the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area (sometimes called the “Inland Empire”). It serves as the county seat of San Bernardino County, California. As one of the Inland Empire’s anchor cities, San Bernardino spans 81 square miles on the floor of the San Bernardino Valley, and has a population of 209,924 as of the 2010 census.

San Bernardino is the 17th-largest city in California, and the 100th-largest city in the United States. San Bernardino is home to numerous diplomatic missions for the Inland Empire, being one of four cities in California with numerous consulates (the other three being Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco). California State University, San Bernardino is located in the northwestern part of the city. The university also hosts the Coussoulis Arena. Other attractions in San Bernardino include ASU Fox Theatre, the McDonald’s Museum, which is located on the original site of the world’s first McDonald’s, California Theatre, the San

Bernardino Mountains, and San Manuel Amphitheater, the largest outdoor amphitheater in the United States. In addition, the city is home to the Inland Empire 66ers baseball team; they play their home games at San Manuel Stadium in downtown San Bernardino. In the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains lies the University District, which is a commercial area designed to support the California State University with shopping, dining, and high-density residential space. The city of San Bernardino is in the process of developing a historic district around the 1918 Santa Fe Depot, which recently underwent a $15.6 million restoration. When completed, this area will connect to the downtown district with period street lights and street furniture, historic homes and other structures, a new museum, coffee bars, and a mercado with an architectural style in keeping with the Mission Revival station. Leadership Tomás Morales, President

From 2001 to 2007, Morales served in various capacities at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, including provost and vice president for academic affairs, vice president for student affairs, and professor of education. While at Cal Poly Pomona, he established the Kellogg Honors College, realigned the division of academic affairs, and played a key role in completing a $23 million expansion of the Bronco Student Center. In addition, Morales helped faculty secure a $3.5 million National Science Foundation ADVANCE grant to create a university-wide program for the recruitment and development of diverse faculty in the STEM fields. Morales also served as a principal investigator of a six-year, $12 million comprehensive teacher reform grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Prior to joining Pomona, Morales was vice president for student affairs and dean of students at The City College of

New York/CUNY from 1994 to 2001. He provided strategic leadership, restructured the Student Services Corporation, and implemented a new student-centered model for the division of student affairs. From 1992 to 1994, Morales was assistant dean of the School of Education at the State University of New York (SUNY), New Paltz. He holds a B.A. in history from SUNY, New Paltz, and earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in educational administration and policy studies from SUNY, Albany. Having served as an educator and administrative leader in higher education for more than 37 years, he is one of the few higher education administrators in the United States who has held senior administrative positions at the three largest public university systems in the nation: The California State University, The State University of New York, and The City University of New York. Morales is actively involved with several national organizations. He is a board member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and will become the organization’s chair in 2014. He also was co-chair of AASCU’s National Task Force on College Readiness, which recently released the report, “Serving America's Future: Increasing College Readiness,” a comprehensive examination that advocates approaches for public institutions to take. In addition, Dr. Morales serves as vice chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and he was elected to the board of directors of the American Council on Education through March 2016. He previously served on the Executive Committee of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities, the American Council on Education’s Commission on Racial and Ethnic Equity, and the National Information and Communication Technology Literacy Policy Council. In New York, Morales was actively involved in the educational and economic development of the community. He was appointed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg to the New York City Panel on Educational Policy, and was a member of the board of directors of the Staten Island Foundation, SINY Inc., the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, and A Vision for Staten Island. He also was a member of the Staten Island Academy Board of Trustees, and an ambassador with the Immigrant Entrepreneur Program of the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation. In May 2012, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters from his alma mater SUNY, New Paltz, where he was the featured commencement speaker. In recognition for his service to education and his passion for the sport, the baseball field at the College of Staten Island was named in his honor as the Tomás D. Morales Baseball Field.

His lifelong dedication to improving the access and quality of public higher education has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Distinguished Leader in Education Award from Education Update; the Lifetime Achievement Award in Education from the New York League of Puerto Rican Women, Inc.; Effective Leadership Golden Age Award from the Latino Center on Aging; Latino Trendsetter Award at the United Nations; the IMAGEN Certificate Award from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services; the Professional Achievement

Award from Boricua College; the Hispanic Leadership Award from the Boy Scouts of America; the Outstanding Leadership in the Service of Youth Award by the National Honor Society at Susan E. Wagner High School; and the Louis R. Miller Award from the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce and Staten Island Advance. Tomás and his wife, Evy, have been married for 41 years. They have three grown children (sons Thomas and Omar Morales, daughter Amanda Jimenez) and three grandchildren (Isabella Rose Morales, Sophia Lily Morales, and Danica Noelle Jimenez). Brian Haynes, Vice President for Student Affairs

Brian Haynes assumed his vice presidency at California State University, San Bernardino in August, 2013. In this role, he leads a team of more than 300 full-time professional staff and nearly 425 student assistants in programs that support student success, including: Admissions and Student Recruitment; Financial Aid and Scholarships; Registrar; Upward Bound; GEAR UP; Student Health, Counseling and Psychological Services; Career Development Center; Services to Students with Disabilities; Veterans Success Center; Children’s Center; Student Conduct and Ethical Development; Housing and Residential Life; Santos Manuel Student Union; Orientation and First Year Experience; Student Engagement; Associated Students, Inc.; and Recreational Sports.

From 2005-2013, Dr. Haynes served as Vice President for Student Affairs at Clayton State University. From 2000-2005, Dr. Haynes served as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Assistant Professor in the Higher Education and Administration Program (Graduate School) and Instructor, Undergraduate Education at Florida International University in the Division of Student Affairs. From 1999-2000, Dr. Haynes served as the Director of Student Affairs for the Division of Academic and Student Affairs at the State University System of Florida – Florida Board of Regents (now Board of Governors). From 1992-1999, Dr. Haynes served as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Life and Director of Minority Student Affairs in the Division of Student Life at East Carolina University. From 1991-1992, Dr. Haynes served as Assistant Dean of Intercultural Advancement for the Division of College Life at Gettysburg College. Dr. Haynes worked at Ohio State University in various roles; from 1990-1991 Dr. Haynes served as Coordinator of Minority Student Services for the College of Health and Human Services and from 1989-1990, served as Assistant Coordinator for the Health Careers Opportunity Program. Dr. Haynes holds both a doctorate degree in higher education from Ohio University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in History from The Ohio State University.

Alysson M. Satterlund, Associate Vice President and Dean of Students

Dr. Satterlund joined the CSUSB community in August 2014 from Dartmouth College. In her current role she provides leadership to the Office of Housing and Residential Life, the Santos Manuel Student Union, the Office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development, the Office of First Year Experience and Orientation, the CARE Team, the Office of Student Engagement, and the Associated Students, Inc. In addition, she serves as the co-chair of the Student Success Initiative and a co-lead of the Coyote First STEP program, a residential college readiness program for more than 1,500 incoming students. She serves as the 2015-2017 Operations Chair for the Higher Education Case Management Association (HECMA). Dr. Satterlund earned her Ph.D. at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Communication Studies in 2004, where she also worked for the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University. Her research interests include organizational identification, organizational commitment

and cultural studies. A proud First Gen graduate of the California State University system, she is a passionate advocate for equity, access and student success. Dr. Satterlund is a 2004 recipient of a Woodrow Wilson Foundation Fellowship and is a 2007 Harvard IEM alumna. The Student Body The student-faculty ratio at California State University, San Bernardino is 30:1, and the school has 25.7 percent of its classes with fewer than 20 students. The average freshman retention rate, an indicator of student satisfaction, is 88.5 percent. California State University, San Bernardino has a total undergraduate enrollment of 16,676, with a gender distribution of 38.9 percent male students and 61.1 percent female students. CSUSB’s sports teams are known as the Coyotes and play in the California Collegiate Athletic Association in the Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The nickname was inspired by the coyotes that inhabit the area around the campus, which lies on the foothills of San Bernardino Mountains. The CSUSB women’s volleyball team has won six CCAA and three West Region titles. The men’s soccer team went to the NCAA Division II national semifinals, capturing the university’s first California Collegiate Athletic Association title.

History of the Position

Dr. Alysson Satterlund joined the CSUSB community in August 2014 from Dartmouth College. In her current role, she provides leadership to the Office of Housing and Residential Life, the Santos Manuel Student Union, the Office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development, the Office of First Year Experience and Orientation, the CARE Team, the Office of Student Engagement, and the Associated Students, Inc. This position will report directly to Dr. Satterlund. Mark Hartley served in this director role for eight years before leaving last summer. Since then, Rosemary Zometa has been serving as the interim director. It is a great time to join CSUSB.

Responsibilities of the Position The director of the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) provides leadership to student club and organization recognition, Greek letter organizations, and summer engagement initiatives. In addition, the director will guide OSE’s strategic planning and risk management, ensure a high level of staff development, and operationalize annual assessments for the department’s programs and services. The director will provide critical direction on policy updates, fiscal management, co-curricular assessment, and long-range planning for high-impact student engagement at CSUSB. The director serves as a member of the student life leadership team and will take pride in growing student engagement opportunities at CSUSB. The successful candidate will be an innovative, energetic, creative, forward-thinking, student-centered professional who is committed to a collaborative approach to ensuring student success. The director must possess a passion for the development of college students and will partner with units campus-wide to develop activities and programs that will effectively engage the total student population. The successful candidate will foster and promote an integrated team approach to student programming, possess excellent fiscal, communication, advising, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, along with a

commitment to outstanding student service and a desire to mentor and cultivate teamwork. In addition, the director and the OSE team work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends, with the director responsible for six weeks of on-call duty each year. The director will: Supervise/Lead/Manage

Provide leadership and supervision to five full-time professional staff, as well as graduate and undergraduate students.

Ensure a student-learning approach to campus activity programming that effectively meets the social, cultural, and educational needs of the campus and community.

Be responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, supervising review performance, and creating development plans for professional staff, administrative support staff, and student staff.

Ensure effective daily operation of office unit.

Establish annual and long-term student-engagement targets, including staff development goals and benchmarks incorporating promising practices with an emphasis on social justice and educational equity.

Oversee, supervise, and advise the year-long development and management of social, cultural, and educational programs for two campuses.

Manage Programming Resources

Review and interpret California State University System and CSUSB polices as they pertain to the implementation of student-engagement programs and activities.

Oversee and develop the day-to-day operations and procedures of OSE.

Effectively collaborate with departments in the Division of Student Affairs, academic affairs, as well as other internal and external partners.

Ensure programming provides opportunities for growth in social and cultural awareness, leadership skills, personal development, and service to the broader community.

Develop Student Leadership

Responsible for the development and oversight of student leadership activities and a

comprehensive student leadership development program.

Ensure a student-learning approach to civic and service programming that effectively meets the social, cultural, recreational, spiritual, and educational needs of the campus community.

Provide a balanced student-engagement program that complements and supplements the mission of the university with a focus on student learning.

Cultivate cross-divisional partnerships with a focus on student engagement and development.

Serve as the advisor to certain clubs and organizations and ensure certain publications (e.g., club and organization bylaws and calendar of events) are current via all media.

Perform Other Duties

Collaborate with director team to ensure delivery and assessment of high-quality student services and programs.

Develop annual budget and manage fiscal accounts.

Provide fiscal oversight and management of several budgets, including clubs and organizations.

Participate in on-going professional development opportunities.

Serve on CSUSB on-call team.

Serve on committees as appropriate.
