President’s Corner

BY MARYA BAREFOOT

What a difference a pandemic makes… First and most importantly, I hope this finds you and your loved ones all healthy! I knew coming into this role I’d be faced with some challenges, but this threw me for a loop! If all the plans go as I hope, we should only be down one rally this year. I have a feeling August through November rallies will be well attended, as we’re all getting a little antsy to get back on the road. For those of you who are ready to plan way ahead, there is a “Taste ‘O Terhorst” (my nickname!) is set for 2022. Our resident architect and wine aficionado, Phil, has put together a California Architecture, Food and Wine Caravan that will include 25 days of many examples of fine architecture, wine tasting and fine dining throughout the state of California. This caravan is limited to only ten Airstreams, so it will fill quickly! Read the details in the article on pages 7 and 8. I’d like to extend a loud shout out to our Newsletter Editor, Andi Matsumoto, who was recognized in the Blue Beret Magazine for her excellent work by our Region 12 Past President, Bob Stansbury. Congratulations, Andi! Very well deserved! Stay positive and stay well, everyone!

“HAPPY TRAILS!”

Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground Virtual Rally Recap

BY ANDI MATSUMOTO

Unfortunately, we had to postpone our April rally at Flying Flags due to the statewide stay at home

order that was issued on March 19, 2020. In lieu of a rally report this month, we will take a peek at

said Flying Flags RV Resort in Buellton, where we will be rallying in August. Rather than mope, let’s

think towards the future when we can hit the road again.

Flying Flags is one of our family’s favorite camping spots. It is located at 180 Avenue of the Flags,

Buellton, CA. The drive up from Orange County is fairly long but the coastline north of Ventura

makes up for it. The resort has a mix of RV site, cabins, glamping tents and several vintage trailers

you can rent (including Airstreams). There is an onsite wine bar, general store, café, and different

pool options. For the kids, they have a fun splash pad next to the large pool and a playground.

Dogs can run about in the off-leash dog park. On weekends, they have live music.

In the environs, guests can visit winery tasting rooms, restaurants, or pop over to nearby Solvang

for the weekly farmer’s market or some ebelskivers (Danish pastries). The Danish Bakery and the

Solvang Restaurant both offer fresh ebelskivers. Buellton is also the gateway to the Santa Ynez

valley, which offers loads of picturesque wineries to visit.

By far, my favorite place to visit is Ostrich Land USA, which is just down the road. You can pay to

feed the ostriches and emus pellets but beware of trying to pet them – they are big and ornery. If

you go at the right time of year, they sell fresh emu and ostrich eggs. One year we bought an emu

egg, drilled a hole in each end and made a giant ham and veggie quiche. Just one of these eggs

equals a dozen chicken eggs and they taste fantastic.

California Architecture, Food and Wine Caravan B y P h i l a n d L i n d a T e r h o r s t

Start Date: June 12, 2022 (estimate) Start Location: Forestville, CA Stop Date: July 7, 2022 (estimate) Stop Location: San Dimas, CA Total Number of Nights: 25 Number of Stops: 7 Maximum RV Units/with Leaders: 10 Kitty Fee w/2: $5,000.00 Kitty Fee w/1: $4,000.00 Guest: $1,800.00 You’ve seen all the spectacular scenery of California, from the deserts to the mountains, from the redwoods to the sea. Now get ready for a different side of California! We will visit many of the different wine countries of California – Sonoma County, Paso Robles, and Santa Ynez, camping among the vineyard and experiencing various tasting venues, many of which are not open to the public. We will visit many fine examples of architecture by renowned architects such as Richard Neutra, Frank Lloyd Wright, Lloyd Wright, Lim Chang, and Pierre Koenig. At every stop we will visit famous and unique dining establishments (some fancy, some not…), and we will have free times for you to explore California’s finest on your own. The caravan will be strictly limited to 10 Airstreams, because we can’t just march 40 people into these small, mostly private tasting rooms, nor can we bring too many people into some of these private homes. Most, if not all, wineries will offer the opportunity to purchase wine, either for consumption on this caravan or for you to ship home, and we assume that you will… Along the way we hope we will all become fast friends and share our love of Architecture, Food, and Wine.

We will begin our caravan in The Russian River Valley, one of Sonoma County’s premier wine growing

regions, moving to Petaluma after a few days. We will visit at least four wineries (including a winery owner’s

dining room), and dine at fine restaurants in and around the quaint town of Healdsburg. (No stale boxed

lunches on this caravan!) We will explore the Point Reyes Seashore, a rare undisturbed part of the coast.

We’ll see the famous Marin County Civic Center, one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s last projects. We will also have

free time for those who chose to dine at even greater gourmet restaurants such as French Laundry, Bouchon,

or Chez Panisse.

We then head south, stopping along the way to see houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. We will visit

Paso Robles, where we will dry camp in a vineyard, and experience this unique wine region. We will visit the

Kundert Medical Clinic (Frank Lloyd Wright) in San Luis Obispo. Next, we traverse to the Central Valley of

California, where we will visit one Frank Lloyd House and two Richard Neutra houses in Bakersfield. For an

historic note, we will dine at the last original Woolworth’s Luncheon Counter.

From Bakersfield we will head back towards the coast, where we will again dry camp in a vineyard outside the

town of Los Olivos. Here we will enjoy many exclusive wine tastings, including one on the winery owner’s back

porch; we’ll dine on famous Santa Maria BBQ, and have the opportunity to visit two 19th century stage coach

stops.

Finally, we will travel south to Southern California, staying in San Dimas, just east of Los Angeles, located a

short distance to a light rail station. We will spend several days in and around Los Angeles, visiting many other

modern and not-so-modern architectural sites. We will visit one of the California’s oldest wineries, and we will

enjoy wine tasting in a winery owner’s back yard of her 1920s Spanish Revival home. We will do a walking

tour of historic downtown Los Angeles, and we will stop for cocktails on the 71st floor of the highest restaurant

in LA.

The Wayfarer’s Chapel (Lloyd Wright), Hollyhock House (Frank Lloyd Wright) (with a special guest docent

leading the way), the Chang Residence (Lim Chang) in Pasadena, and the Stahl House (Pierre Koenig) (also

known as Case Study House #22) round out our tour. We will have a free day to explore SoCal’s beaches,

mountains, and deserts. We will use public transportation and private vans while in the city so that we will not

have to drive through Los Angeles on our own. Our final banquet will be in a 19th century building that has

been a restaurant, in some form or another, since the gold rush days.

If you enjoy fine wine, fine food, and world-class architecture, this caravan is for you. It is a little more

expensive than the usual caravan; this is because of the small size and because of the fine dining we will be

enjoying. If you are a beer and hot dog type of person, this caravan is probably not for you.

Come join us if you love wine, food, and architecture!

Making a Fire Ring Box B y P a u l N e l s o n

I wanted some protection for our fire ring. Keeping with the Airstream motif, I came up with this idea. Some of the features include slides on the bottom to correspond to my truck bed. I stole this idea from Mr. Barefoot. The screw eye will allow pulling to the tailgate with long handle, idea stolen from Mr. Suggett. The Formica inlay makes for an easily cleaned wine table at the campsite. Cheers! I buy scrap pieces of metal from Industrial Metal Supply near John Wayne Airport. The address is 2481 Alton Parkway, Irvine, 92606. They have a cutoffs (new scrap) room. If you go there, take gloves and your own tape measure. It’s open to anyone from hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers to major orders. As an essential business, they are still open during the shutdown.

Airstream Quarantine B y A n d i M a t s u m o t o

Sources: airstream.com, National Air and Space Museum and space.com

The Mobile Quarantine Facility (MQF) pictured here was one of four converted 35-foot Airstreams built by NASA for Apollo 11 astronauts (Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin, pictured left to right) returning from the Moon in 1969. Its purpose was to prevent the unlikely spread of moon germs by isolating the astronauts from contact with other people. They had to stay inside for 88 hours while being transported on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet to the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii, then to Hickam AFB where the MQF was loaded into the cargo hold of a C-141 aircraft and flown to Ellington AFB in Houston, Texas. The MQF, with the astronauts still on board, was then transported to the NASA Lunar Receiving Laboratory at Johnson Space Center, where they were allowed to finish out their three week quarantine. NASA sent the MQF to the Smithsonian in 1974 and you can still see it today on display in the Human Spaceflight at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. Buzz Aldrin, now 90 years old, is lending his fame from his quarantine experience 51 years ago in the midst of the present coronavirus pandemic. While much of America lives under a stay-at-home order, Aldrin is selling online 100 autographed photos of President Richard Nixon visiting the Airstream-quarantined astronauts after they landed. He said in a recent interview, "Like many of you, I want to avoid catching and spreading COVID-19 and have been self-quarantining for a while now. Being quarantined is never easy — I know! — but it's something we can all do for the safety of ourselves, our loved ones and our country. Call it one small step for each of us, one giant leap for mankind!" The autographed photos are $599 apiece, with proceeds going to the Salvation Army to help communities around the United States deal with COVID-19. If you would like to buy one to decorate your own Airstream, they are selling at Aldrin’s Apollo Space Shop: https://roadtoapollo50th.com/

G L U T E N F R E E C H E E S Y C R A C K E R S If you have any sort of gluten allergy or intolerance in your camping group, then these cheesy crackers are going to be a hit. People who can’t eat gluten sometimes get the short end of the stick when it comes to camping snacks, so it’s always nice to take some extra time out to prepare a snack that they can enjoy without worry. Even better, these crackers are great for the kids to help make, so you don’t have to do all the work alone. Here is what you need:

• 1 large egg, separated

• 1 T cider vinegar

• 1 ½ cups gluten-free all-purpose flour

• 1 T cornstarch

• ¾ tsp kosher salt

• ½ tsp baking powder

• ½ tsp dry mustard

• ½ tsp paprika

• ¼ tsp turmeric

• 6 T unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

• ½ cup shredded cheddar

• ½ cup grated parmesan

• 1 T white sesame seeds

• 2 tsp poppy seeds

Here’s how you make it:

1. Whisk together the egg white, vinegar and 3 T water in a small bowl and set aside 2. Place the egg yolk in a small bowl, cover, and refrigerate 3. Pulse the flour, cornstarch, salt, baking powder, mustard, paprika, and turmeric in a food processor 4. Add the butter, cheddar, and parmesan to processor and pulse until the butter is completely broken up 5. Pour in the egg white mixture and pulse until the dough starts to form a ball 6. Place the dough ball on a large piece of plastic wrap and pat into ½-inch thick round 7. Wrap and refrigerate to chill, for about an hour 8. Position your oven racks with one at the top and one at the bottom third of the oven and preheat to

350F 9. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment 10. Roll out the dough onto a large piece of parchment, to about ⅛-inch thick 11. Using a 1 ½-inch cookie cutter, cut shapes out and transfer to the prepared baking sheets with about ½

inch in between them 12. Whisk 2 tsp of water into the egg yolk 13. Brush the tops of each cracker with the mixture 14. Then sprinkle with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and a little bit of salt 15. Bake 2 baking sheets of crackers at a time until they are deep golden brown on the bottom — about 20

minutes — and be sure to rotate the sheets halfway through 16. Let them cool and then store in an airtight container

We haven’t met a jalapeno popper we didn’t love, and we are guessing that other people feel that way considering these things are on the menu at restaurants all across the country. But guess what? Now you can bring jalapeno poppers right to your campsite or kitchen and make them just how you’d like them, (and as many of them as you’d like too).

Here’s what you need:

• Jalapenos • Cream cheese • Bacon

Here’s how you make it:

1. Clean out the jalapenos 2. Stuff them with cream cheese 3. Wrap the jalapenos in bacon 4. Cook on the fire or grill
