Moving Scams
Scammers can turn relocating into an expensive nightmare! These scams run the gamut from missing items, massive price hikes and in some cases goods being held hostage for additional payment.
How does this scam work?
There are several versions of moving scams. The simplest is getting a quote and leaving a deposit, but the “movers” never show. In another variation, the moving company quotes a price based on weight. After loading, they inform you that your belongings went over the weight estimate and the additional weight will be a lot more per pound, sometimes double!
With the most egregious scheme, everything seems to be fine. The movers quote a price, arrive on time, and load your belongings on a truck. But when the truck doesn’t show up, you learn your belongings are being held hostage, and you have to pay another fee before scammers will deliver them.
Tips to spot this scam:
• Watch out for signs of a fly-by-night company. Look out for company websites that have no address and no information about a mover’s registration or insurance. Another warning is if telephone calls are answered with a generic “movers” rather than a company name, or the mover uses rented trucks. An additional tip-off is the moving company that doesn’t make an on-site inspection and creates estimates over the phone.
• Get everything in writing. Check licensing and confirm insurance coverage with the authorities by contacting the US Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Household Goods Program at 1-800-832-5660, or by visiting www.ai.fmcsa.dot.gov. Carefully read the terms and conditions of any contract, as well as the limits of liability and any disclaimers. Make sure pick-up and delivery dates are spelled out and understand how the rate is being calculated. Don’t pay cash and do not prepay or make a large deposit. Understand the terms of the insurance coverage and consider purchasing full value protection.
If you suspect you’ve been the victim of a scam, do not be afraid or embarrassed to talk about it. You are not alone, and there are people who can help. Keep handy the numbers and resources you can turn to, including the local police, your bank, and Adult Protective Services (APS). To obtain the contact information for APS in your area, call the Eldercare Locator, a government sponsored national resource line at 1-800-677-1116, or visit their website at www.eldercare.gov.
You can also file a scam report with BBB Scam Tracker and the FTC’s Do Not Call List. If you have questions or concerns about this or any other scam, call the local BBB in Fresno at (559) 222-8111, or visit their website at www.bbb.org.
Additional information on scams targeting seniors can be found on the National Council on Aging (NCOA) website at ncoa.org/enhance-economic-security as well as SCAMGUARD at www.scamguard.com

BALANCE DISORDERS By N ati on al In sti t u te s o f H eal th &
N a tio n al Insti t ute o n Ag in g
Balance disorders are one of the main reasons older people fall. Good balance helps you walk without staggering, get up from a chair without falling, climb stairs without tripping and bend without falling. Good balance is important to help you stay independent and carry out daily activities.
Causes of balance problems. Some balance disorders are caused by problems in the inner ear. A condition called labyrinthitis occurs when part of the inner ear becomes infected or swollen. Upper respiratory infections, viral infections and bacterial infections can also lead by labyrinthitis. Some diseases of the circulatory system, such as stroke, can cause dizziness and other balance problems. Low blood pressure, head injury and some medications may also lead to balance problems. Check with your doctor if you notice a problem while taking a medication.
Symptoms of balance disorders. If you have a balance disorder you may stagger when you walk or teeter or fall when you try to stand up. Other symptoms may include dizziness, falling, lightheadedness, faintness, floating sensation, blurred vision, confusion, nausea, vomiting, fear, anxiety and panic. Symptoms may come and go over short periods of time or last for a long time, which can lead to fatigue and depression.
Questions to ask yourself. You can help identify a balance problem by asking yourself some key questions. If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, discuss the symptom with your doctor.
• Do I feel unsteady?
• Do I feel as if the room is spinning, even if only brief periods of time?
• Do I feel as if I’m moving when I know I’m standing or sitting still?
• Do I lose my balance and fall, or feel as if I’m falling?
• Do I feel lightheaded, or as if I might faint?
• Does my vision become blurred?
• Do I ever feel disoriented, losing my sense of time, place or identity?
Coping with a balance disorder. Some people with a balance disorder may not be able to fully relieve their dizziness and will need to find ways to cope. A vestibular rehabilitation therapist can help you develop an individualized treatment plan. Speak with your doctor about whether it’s safe to drive and about ways to lower your risk of falling during daily activities. To reduce your risk of injury from dizziness, avoid walking in the dark. You should also wear low-heeled shoes. If necessary, use a cane or walker and modify conditions in your home and workplace, such as adding handrails.
You can find reliable information on balance issues by contacting these useful resource agencies: MedlinePlus National Library of Medicine at www.medlineplus.gov

HEALTH
Life Insurance By the State of California Department of Insurance (CDI)
If you are planning to purchase life insurance, or make changes to your current policy, you should first
consider your needs and understand the different type of insurance policies available.
Choosing the amount of life insurance. Your need for life insurance will vary with your
age, and the amount of insurance you purchase should depend on the standard of living
you wish to assure for your dependents. Consider the amount of assets and sources of
continuing income available to your dependents when you pass away. Simply stated,
you should choose an amount of insurance that is determined necessary to meet the
needs you are trying to satisfy.
Steps to determine how much life insurance you need.
• Determine how much life insurance you need based on the factors mentioned above.
• Decide how much money you can afford to pay.
• Choose the type of life insurance policy that meets your coverage goals and current budget.
Once you have completed these steps, you will be able to move ahead and contact several life insurance companies,
thorough an agent or broker, to shop for the right policy for you.
Important facts if you are considering changes to your current life insurance policy. Many consumers are approached
by life insurance agents and are asked to consider canceling their current life insurance policy in order to purchase a
replacement policy. In most cases, the cash value of the current life policy is used to buy more insurance or a new
policy. While a decision to replace an existing life insurance policy may be a good one, sometimes this may not be in
your best interest. More than likely you purchased your policy with a long term financial plan in mind. Replacing or
changing your insurance policy at this point may affect the intended results of your overall financial plan. If you are
considering replacing or changing your life insurance policy, you should first assess your needs and determine what is
in your long term best interest.
Certain cautions are appropriate when considering replacing or changing your current life insurance.
• You may have to pay start-up costs again.
• You may be required to wait one or two years before a new policy passes through the contestable period.
• You may pay a higher premium for new insurance over the duration of the policy.
• The financial strength of a new insurer may be different from that of your present insurer.
• There may be specific tax consequences when you replace or change your current policy.
• You may find different loan provisions in a new policy.
• If you use the cash value of one policy to pay for the premium on a new policy, the values used may not be
sufficient to support the new policy in future years.
• You may not have immediate access to your money in a new policy.
