HEADHUNTED TO MASTERMIND NEW ‘VILLAGE GARAGE’CONCEPTAfter months of searching,Felix Frixou has got the manhe wanted to head up anexciting restructuring of hisBenz Bavarian businesswhich will revolutionise the

services offered to motorists.Paul Wright (35) is the manchosen to implement a wholenew range of servicesdesigned to make life easierand stress free for the

community,“I am developing what isbasically a one-stop shopfor all motorists’ needs.People can come to us foreverything from an MOT toservicing and repairs, trade-in, buying and selling ofmotors to enable them toget the best deals andensuring they get the motorof their choice maintainedin the best running order atprices they can afford,” saidPaul. He is delighted he was theman Felix wanted to headup this new-style conceptbecause it enables him toplay to his across-the-boardstrengths he hasaccumulated over the last20 years, progressing fromapprentice to technician.

foreman, quality control, workshop supervisor and intothe management side ofbusiness.“This job offers me the scope

to put the ideas of Felix intopractice and come up withsome of my own,” says Paul.He wants people in thecommunity to take away theworries they have about theircars by using the modernisedTamworth Street Motors -“we will take care of all theirneeds like a doctor does withhis patients. We will be theVillage Garage rather like thedoctors’ village surgery whereall the motoring transactionscan be handled at one place. It makes life easier for the carowner who knows we areclose at hand in thecommunity, there at all timesto deal with any worries andqueries and providingcourtesy cars wherevernecessary. We will keep the communityon the road and by advisingthem honestly we can savethem thousands of pounds.“It’s a hugely excitingproject and everything isnow in place to start,” saidPaul..

Felix Frixou started hisbusiness Tamworth StreetMotors, in 1987 and hasdeveloped Benz BavarianMotors, a top of the rangegarage in the village.“I have not forgotten thebacking I got in Duffieldwhen I started. So althoughwe deal with up-marketmotors at Benz Bavarian, Ihaven’t forgotten mybusiness roots.“That’s why I amdeveloping this idea of avillage garage where wecommit ourselves to themotorist who, in turn, commits to us to look afterhis or her needs. We will notbe beaten for price and wehave the best people, who, like me, believe in givingour community the benefitsof our experience.”

Distraction burglary is aparticularly nasty crimetargeted at vulnerablepeople, usually but notexclusively, the elderly. Offenders pose as being fromutility companies, roofingrepairs or some other suchpretext to get invited into thevictim’s home. A recent incident in Duffieldinvolved an offender posingas a policeman. Bogus callerscan also turn up as builders orgardeners and also try to conthe householder into payingfor unnecessary work. Once inside they may employsome ruse, for examplegetting the householder to turnthe water on and off whilst the

offender ‘checks out the pipesin the bathroom’ whereas, inreality, they are searching thehome for the victim’s cash andvaluables. Often there will be more thanone offender, with onekeeping the victim engagedwhilst the other searches thehouse. Another method is ayoungster claiming to havelost a ball in the garden or apet dog and whilst the victimhelps them search, anaccomplice slips into thehouse and steals. If someone calls and you arein any doubt don’t let themin. Make sure your back door is

locked, put the chain on thedoor and check their detailsbefore letting them in.It is believed there is amassive under reporting ofthis offence for which thereare a number of reasons:The elderly are generallyproud people and may be tooembarrassed to tell theirfamily or they may bepressured into going into ahome. To be a victim of crime isupsetting for anyone. For the elderly to have theirhome and trust violated, tolose their hard-saved cash andvaluables, the effect can bedevastating. The criminals, who specialise

in this type of crime, identifyvictims by looking for tell-talesigns:Lack of’ maintenance of homeor garden may indicate aperson lacking mobilitySingle bottle of milk outsidecan mean a lone occupantClosed windows in warmweather suggests lack ofmobility by householder.

DUFFIELD CC IN GREAT ESCAPE FROM RELEGATIONAfter losing their final twogames, Duffield CricketClub’s 1st XI finished levelon points - 259 - withTutbury but becauseDuffield lost less games itwas Tutbury who departedfrom Abbey Glass Divisionone at the end of the season. As skipper Adam Short said atthe start of the season:”It willtough and we need our bestside out to survive.”Too many of the better playerswere unable to play in all 22League games and that causedthe problems.

Club professional AnthonyHarris played his part withsome 900 runs (average 43)and a great season behind thestumps and left hander DavidHalliday scored over 500 runs(average 46) but missed eightmatches.Other than Paul Bakel and EdSims, the rest of the battinglacked consistency. The slower bowlers, Sims, JoBalraj and Richard Jordan allhad success with the ball butthe injury to Philip Jordanmeant the team had no regularpace bowling so there was an

no balance in attack“Considering everything wedid well to stay up,” saidAdam. “After out last matchwe thought we were relegatedbut when the countback wasdone, we were saved by theskin of our teeth.”Preparations are alreadytaking place to strengthen theside for next season asHalliday is going to Australiaand Harris may not bereturning as professional. There’s plenty of hearteningnews though as the 2nd XIfinished 3rd in Division 5S

and the 3rd XI 4th in Division7C.The Stevenson brothers Robinwith three hundreds and overa thousand runs and Rich, twohundreds and an average ofover 41 were the chief rungetters in the 2nd XI and onceagain all rounder Mark Antillshone at the lower level, 46wickets and some 700 runs.Several players had theirmoments with both bat andball and the most pleasing ofall was the fact that many ofthe juniors, playing in adultteams, showed great promise.
