New from Waste Management - Solar Trash Compactors in El Cajon

Waste Management o f S a n D i e g o (WMSD) recently

installed a new Solar Powered Trash Compactor demonstra-

tion unit in El Cajon. The bin, called “BigBelly,” compacts garbage using power gener-ated from built-in solar panels. About the same size as a stan-dard 35-gallon trash barrel, each compactor provides five times the capacity of a tradi-tional trash receptacle, trash collection frequency can be cut up to 80 percent, which can reduce collection costs, fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions in El Cajon. The compactors also include a matching recy-cling receptacle for collecting plastic bottles, newspapers, glass and other recyclables.

As part of a pilot program, Waste Management placed one Solar Powered Trash Compac-tor at the Prescott Promenade in the heart of downtown El Cajon. The city landmark was selected for the unit’s ability to reduce litter from the high traf-fic area and cut the frequency and cost of trash collection. Other bins in the County are

located at San Diego’s Lind-berg Field Airport, Qualcomm Stadium, PETCO Park, and at Oceanside Pier.

“We are proud to partner with the City of El Cajon for this exciting new pilot pro-gram,” said Community and Municipal Relations Manager Les Hart. “Our new Solar Powered Trash Compactors will help save El Cajon costs on labor, fuel and equipment. The compactors will also help reduce the City’s carbon foot-print.”

“The solar compactors are an important asset to our enhancements of the Prescott Promenade,” said El Cajon Mayor Mark Lewis. “Waste Management has done a great job of providing environmen-tally responsible options for El Cajon residents, while con-tinuously raising awareness of recycling and the importance of proper waste disposal.”

This promotion will help the women of San Diego manage their weight and their wallets by joining Curves for free, while also helping feed hungry people in the community.

“The Curves Food Drive is always exciting,” said Eram Lokhand-wala, the owner of the San Diego club, located at 6784, El Cajon Blvd. Suite#C. San Diego.CA-92115. “We have a chance to help so many people at a time when the food banks are lowest. Especially during these uncertain times, this food is needed more than ever. It’s a win-win situation for everyone, and we’re very proud to participate.”

“This year our goal is to collect at least 300lbs of food and do-nate to the Jewish Food Service. They feed deserving and needy families of all faiths. For many children that is the only nutritious and hot meal they receive,” said Eram Lokhandwala.Others wish-ing to donate may drop off non-perishable food items at Curves Monday through Saturday during business hours through the month of March. Ed and Dorothy met while on a singles cruise and Ed fell head over heels for her. When they discovered they lived in the

same city only a few miles apart Ed was ecstatic. He immediately started asking her out when they got home.

Within a couple of weeks, Ed had taken Dorothy to dance clubs,

restaurants, concerts, movies, and museums. Ed became convinced that Dorothy was indeed his soul mate and true love. Every date seemed better than the last.

On the one-month anniversary of their first dinner on the cruise

ship, Ed took Dorothy to a fine restaurant. While having cocktails and waiting for their salad, Ed said, “I guess you can tell I’m very much in love with you.

I’d like a little serious talk before our relationship con-

tinues to the next stage. So, before I get a box out of my jacket and ask you a life changing question, it’s only fair to warn you, I’m a total golf nut. I play golf, I read about golf, I watch golf on TV. In short, I eat, sleep, and breathe golf. If that’s going to be a problem, for us, you’d better say so now!”

Dorothy took a deep breath and responded, “Ed, that certainly

won’t be a problem. I love you as you are and I love golf too; but, since we’re being totally honest with each other, you need to know that about the last five years I’ve been a hooker.”

“Oh wow! I see,” Ed replied. He looked down at the table, and

was quiet for a moment, deep in serious thought then he added, “You know, it’s probably because you’re not keeping your wrists straight when you hit the ball.”

Sharp Gros smon t Hospital’s Medical Intensive Care Unit

(MICU) is the second critical care unit in San Diego, and one of 14 in California, to receive the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence®. The award, which is given bi-annually, recognizes units that demonstrate best prac-tice methods in the areas of professional practice, patient outcomes and the health of the work environment.

The award, created by the American Association of Criti-cal-Care Nurses (AACN), eval-uated units on six categories that impact patient care and outcomes: recruitment and retention; education, train-ing and mentoring; research and evidence-based practice; patient outcomes; leadership and organizational ethics; and a healing environment. The

award provides the means for critical care units to measure against the highest quality stan-dards based on national crite-ria. Units that meet or exceed

these standards are leaders in critical care nursing.

“We’re excited to be recog-nized for the care we provide to our patients and the dedication of our staff,” said Nicole Sevilla-Zeigen, Director, Critical Care, Sharp Grossmont Hospital. “The award signifies our com-mitment to providing excellent care to the community.”

For nearly 20 years, the Hubble Space Telescope

has dazzled us with unprec-edented views of the cosmos—from the splendor of our celes-tial neighborhood to galaxies billions of light years away. IMAX, Hubble is now playing at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, where audiences can blast off alongside the Atlantis STS-125 crew, witness up-close some of the most challenging spacewalks ever performed, and experience firsthand Hub-ble’s awe-inspiring imagery, from the heart of the Orion Nebula and our Milky Way to the edge of the observable uni-verse. Recounting the amazing journey of the most important scientific instrument since Gali-leo’s original telescope, Hubble will immerse moviegoers in the great wonders and astounding beauty of our universe.

“It’s been said that The IMAX

Experience® is the next best thing to being in space, and with IMAX, the audience really is there,” said Producer/Director Toni Myers. “Fifteen years ago we made a film about space ex-ploration that included Hubble, when it started sending back the first images. Today, we have Hubble’s entire phenomenal legacy of data to explore. With IMAX, we can transport people to galaxies that are 13 billion light years away—back to the edge of time. Real star travel is here at last.”

IMAX, Hubble will enable moviegoers to journey through distant galaxies to explore the grandeur and mysteries of our celestial surroundings, and ac-company space-walking astro-nauts as they attempt some of the most difficult and important tasks in NASA’s history. The film will offer an inspiring and unique look into the Hubble

Space Telescope’s legacy and highlight its profound impact on the way we view the universe and ourselves.

Narrated by Leonardo Di-Caprio, Hubble reunites the space station filmmaking team, led by Producer/Director Toni Myers. James Neihouse, Di-rector of Photography, also doubles as the Astronaut crew trainer. Judy Carroll is Associ-ate Producer, and Graeme Ferguson, Co-founder of IMAX and pioneer Producer of many IMAX space films, is Executive Producer. Hubble is an IMAX and Warner Bros. Pictures production, in cooperation with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The film has been rated G and has a running time of 43 minutes.

The animated movie How to Train Your Dragon is predictable

but enjoyable. The story about wild fire-breathing dragons is based on the book by Cres-sida Cowell and takes place in the Viking era. Almost every day dragons come and steal livestock and terrorize the people. Most of the village on the Island of Berk is full of large Vikings, except for Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel); he’s a scrawny, timid teenager.

Hiccup intends to train the villagers not to kill the dragons but deal with them so they won’t take all the food. But nobody believes him because he always aims too high so no-body in the village thinks much of him. Neither does his father, Stoick the Vast (voiced by Ge-rard Butler), who also happens to be the tribe’s Chief.

When Hiccup goes in search to kill one of the Night Fury dragons – one of the worst kind – something happens inside Hiccup. He discovers that the Night Fury is missing a part of his back wing, so Hiccup makes it a fake one. At the same time Hiccup is finally admitted into dragon training school. He now has mixed emotions because he’s always wanted to gain favor with the villagers by being a brave dragon killer like his dad.

Meanwhile Hiccup has ad-ventures with his friends Astrid (voiced by America Ferrera), Snotlout (voiced by Jonah Hill), Fishlegs (voiced by Chris-topher Mintzplasse), and twins Ruffnut (voiced by Kristen Wiig) and Tuffnut (voiced by

Review by Diana Saenger

Anyone who thinks the ongoing debacle about the health care

bill is tedious and implausible should get a load of the plot in Repo Men. Set 20 years in our future and adapted from Eric Garcia’s The Repossession Mambo, body parts are now a major business. It’s a dark and bleak world, and everyone needs new body parts as they age. Money is no problem, for “The Union” is happy to nego-tiate a payment schedule.

Unfortunately, few people have jobs in the society de-

picted here, so when their body part is scanned by one of the Union repo men, they are usu-ally past their due date on pay-ments. The Union men either get the money immediately or whip out a knife and remove the part to take back to the company for sale again.

Remy (Jude Law) and Jake (Forest Whitaker) are two of the company’s repo men. They’re recognizable by a company tattoo on their neck. They tackle each job with the gusto of removing a carburetor from a car. Little focus is placed on Jake’s personal life, but Remy’s life fuels much of the plot. He’s happily married to Carol (Carice van Houten), until she demands Remy stops being a repo man. He tries switching jobs in the company, but selling body parts is not as exciting as retrieving them so he doesn’t make the switch. When Carol takes their son Peter (Chandler Canterbury) and leaves, Remy feels devastated.

While attempting to reclaim a heart from a musician (rapper RZA), Remy gets zapped by a faulty piece of equipment. He

wakes up in the hospital to dis-cover he’s now a bonafide cus-tomer of The Union. He doesn’t even get a break on the price for his new heart and wonders how he will pay for it.

A satire way too gruesome, Repo Men is absolutely repul-sive to me. Every few minutes throughout the film bodies are being ripped apart as the repo men bring in the defaulted loot. It’s also preposterous. For example, in one scene Remy becomes a one-man killing ma-chine and slashes and stabs a slew of men trying to stop him from getting into the top secret section of the company.

The story goes from bad to worse when Remy becomes the one being chased – along with his new gal Beth (Alice Braga), a miserable ex-night-club singer who has few of her own body parts left. I don’t know why seasoned actors such as Whitaker or Law would want to appear in a movie like this, but Law explains his motivation as follows: “I liked the dark humor mixed with a love story, a buddy movie and satire, and the challenge that

‘Repo Men’ is a bizarre and brutal tale

Repo Men Studio: Universal PicturesGazette Rating: DMPAA: “R” for strong bloody violence, grisly images, language and some sexuality/nudity.Who Should Go: Anyone wanting to avoid root canal surgery.

juggling all those tones pre-sented to me as an actor.”

Liev Schreiber plays Frank, the heartless and greedy man-ager of The Union. He’s perfect

as the cold, manipulative eye-on-the-prize supervisor who doesn’t have a bit of sympathy for his best repo man.

Repo Men comes across

as a brutal chase, conquer and kill movie. It’s a film with characters we care nothing about because they are cal-lous people with no morals or compassion.

During the cruise they celebrated Chuck’s 80th birthday and his and Karla’s 52nd wedding anniversary. In Juneau they climbed aboard a float plane which provided spectacular views of several glaciers. It landed at the renowned, but remote Taku Lodge where they dined on grilled King salmon caught early that morning.

During the one-week cruise the Barber family took over 1,5000 photos. Their bright orange shirts helped to keep them together as they walked around exploring several other cities in Alaska and British Columbia including the famed Butchart Gardens in Victoria. Pictured are (L to R) Chris, Kim (Barber), Ruby, Chuck, Karla and Corey Barber.

My husband died four years ago, we were married for over 40

years and I still miss him deeply. My children tell me I should be over the grief, yet I still mourn for him. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful he is with the Lord, but I am sad when I stumble across his belongings or photos. Are my children right? Signed, Grieving Widow

Dear Grieving Widow,Your situation is very fragile; on one hand, no one can

understand the connection you had with your husband being married for over forty years, such a great loss. At the same time your children probably do not want you overcome by grief. Every person is different; I cannot tell you how long your period of mourning should be.

The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:1-4, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up, a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.”

You will always, forever feel something special in your heart, the two have become ONE! God is able to bring healing, and comfort to your heart. One day you will see your love again in eternity. But while you are on earth, enjoy life to the fullest, for our time is short.

You never know if God has someone else that you can once again share your heart with. Smile, it is better to have loved than never loved at all. What a GIFT!

With the 2009 sea-son in the memo-ry books, looking

back it was a year the Chargers celebrated 50-years of football. Winning their last 11 regular season games, clinching a first-round-bye in the playoffs, hopes were high to reach the

next pinnacle of the post-sea-son. All that came crashing down after a gut wrenching, disappointing home playoff loss to the New York Jets, leav-ing Chargers fans wondering if the ‘window of opportunity’ had shut.

Attempting to keep that win-dow open, the Chargers made

some difficult roster decisions in preparation for the start of the 2010 off-season beginning with the release of future Hall-of-Fame running back LaDai-nian Tomlinson, the face of the San Diego Chargers.

In his career in San Diego L.T had 138 rushing touchdowns, 153 total touchdowns, 12,490 rushing yards to go along with 530 pass receptions. He also threw 7 touchdown passes for the blue and gold.

Tomlinson said, “It is sad for me, but I’m definitely excited about the future.” He thanked the fans, the organization, the city, and his family in an emo-tional, touching speech that only L.T. could give.

LaDainian Tomlinson wasted little time inking a 2-year $5.1 million contract with the New York Jets.

Another tough decision for the Chargers was the release of their 12-year Pro Bowl defensive lineman nose-tackle Jamal Williams.

“This is a difficult time of the year and the most difficult part of our job,” said General Manager A.J. Smith. “Jamal has been an anchor of our defense for 12 seasons. He’s battled courageously at one of the most punishing positions on the field, and I respect him immensely.”

Jamal Williams also wasted little time signing a lucrative $6 million guaranteed contract with the Denver Broncos.

These two player’s were the

cornerstones of the San Diego Chargers.

Also released was running back Michael Bennett. Thin at that position the Chargers im-mediately attempted to help fill the void claiming running back

Marcus Mason off waivers from the Washington Redskins.

The 25-year-old Mason a 5’9”, 215-pound college All-American from Youngstown State spent time with the Red-skins and Ravens. In nine NFL games, the former 2007 free agent had 32 rushes for 127 yards, averaging nearly 4.00 yards per carry.

“We have a plan for the season,” said Smith. It’s a long off-season and we’ll have many options. We’re confident we’ll be able to add strong depth at all positions, including running back.”

Another tough decision

came on March 5, when the Chargers traded four-year-veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie to the New York Jets for a conditional third-round choice, possibly becoming a second-round draft pick in 2011.

A first-round selection by the Chargers in 2006 from Florida State, Cromartie had his best year in San Diego when he made the Pro-Bowl leading the league with 10 interceptions. He will be remembered for his athleticism evidenced in a one-handed leaping interception, and for his return of a missed field goal 109-yards against the Minnesota Vikings, a record that will never be broken.

The Chargers faced some more tough decisions regard-ing 21 expired players con-tracts.

Of the 21 players, 7 are Unrestricted Free Agents. They are DE Alfonso Boone, TE Brandon Manumaleuna, C-G. Dennis Morgan, WR/ST Kasim Osgood, T John Runyan, DT Ian Scott, and TE Kris Wilson.

Osgood signed with the Jack-

sonville Jaguars and Manum-aleuna signed for big bucks with the Chicago Bears.

Wilson and Boone recently signed two-year contracts with the Chargers, Ian Scott signed a 1-year deal, keeping them on the team along with de-fensive tackle Antonio Garay who would have become a restricted free agent.

Of the 12 restricted free-agents, 5 were offered maxi-mum tendered contracts. They include linebacker Shawne Merriman, running back/return specialist Darren Sproles, wide receivers Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd, and offensive tackle Marcus McNeil.

These players may sign an offer sheet with another team, but because they were maximum tendered contracts, the Chargers have a right to match any signed offer or be compensated with draft picks (a first and/or third round pick) based on their tender if they choose not to match any outside offer.

“Our intentions are to have all out tendered players back,” said Smith. “We feel good about these players and conti-nuity is important to us. There could be some developments in situations and we will wait and see. I don’t know what activity will come. I’m sure there will be some interest. We’ll deal with that when it comes.”

The San Diego Chargers hold exclusive bargaining rights to free agent linebacker Antoine Applewhite and full-back Mike Tolbert.

The Chargers will also be actively looking for depth in free agency. As one of last season’s final eight playoff teams they can sign only one unrestricted free agent with a first year salary of $5.807 million or more. They can sign an unlimited number of players with a first year salary of $3.862 million.

San Diego as usual will be looking for depth in the NFL draft. They hold the 28’th choice in each round of the draft’s seven rounds, except for the second round moving up 20 slots after swapping the second-round choice with the Seattle Seahawks, getting the 40’th overall selection. This is the result of a trade

made last Thursday between the two teams sending to the Seahawks backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. In addition San Diego will also receive and undisclosed 2011 Seattle draft choice.

The Chargers gave up their 2010 sixth-round pick to Houston in last season’s acquisition of defensive line-man Travis Johnson, (a former first-rounder).

On Monday, the Chargers were awarded a compensa-tory 5’th round draft pick (168’th overall) in the 2010 NFL draft. This is because the Chargers lost more players to free agency last year than it acquired. (Olshansky and Goff lost, Kevin Burnett signed, 2 to 1).

Also on Monday the Char-gers parted company with wide receiver Demetrius Byrd. A seventh round choice from Louisiana State, Byrd had suffered major injuries from a car accident in 2009 before the NFL draft. The Chargers took a chance on him and gener-ously extended him a contract through the 2009 season.

Regarding the upcoming NFL draft Smith comment-ed, “It’s a pretty good draft. They’re always good drafts and I say that every year. There’s a lot of good players for all of us to go out and get. I’m pretty excited about the level of players that they have. The rankings aren’t done yet, we have plenty of time to do that. We will hopefully make some good selections and bring some of those fine young men in here to be Chargers.”

“It’s always exciting. Every years a new year. I can’t wait until the Super Bowl is over because all those hopes and dreams start again. Our goal is to put together a championship level team, and hopefully get back and win enough games to go to the post season. We’ll add some pieces, some new players and get at it again.”

A.J. Smith has proven to be a master at adding depth to this team via the draft and free-agency.

Unfortunately, the NFL is

a business and has to be run like a business. As we all know, there are no friends in busi-ness.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe GT

by Dave Stall

Who would have thought Hyundai would produce a

performance car? Not me, but I was a service manager in 1986 when Hyundai came to the U.S. and, ugh, what a terrible car. Hyundai was not offended, they really listened to their dealers and customers and fast forward today and now has one of the premier car companies building cars that drivers love to drive.

Today’s tester car is a bright

ing the climate controls were a breeze along with the other features that take a little con-centration to operate. My tester had a sunroof, worked fine, just not a sun roof kind of guy. The rear hatch was roomy and easy to open from inside the car or from the handy key fob.

The only thing that really con-cerned me was how tinny the doors sounded when closed, if I didn’t know better I would have thought they forgotten to put sound insulation in the doors? I will stop by a local dealer and see if the production cars are any quieter.

Their warranty can’t be beat — five-year 50,000 bumper to bumper, 10-year 100,000 miles on the powertrain, five-year un-limited miles roadside assistance and seven-year unlimited miles rust perforation. Now that is what I call standing behind their product!

The price is reasonable as well, bases out at $30,000 and with all the outstanding features included it’s still $30,000 plus tax and license. Now that is the way to build and sell a car if you ask me!

red Genesis Coupe GT; in fact the real paint color name is Tsukuba Red. Since I did not know what Tsukuba Red meant I called Hyundai America and spoke with Jim Trainor National manager for Public Relations. He told me all the paint colors are named after famous race tracks or turns on a famous race track..I then Googled the paint name and sure enough it came up with a very famous race track in Japan. Pretty cool.

My tester car had the 3.8-liter V6 that produces 306

horsepower and 266 pound foot of torque backed by a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters that shifted as smooth as butter. Buyers can opt for a 6-speed manual, which is my choice, but I was very happy with the automatic. There is a choice of a 2.0-liter four cylinder if you desire, it puts out 210 horsepower and 210 pound-foot of torque, plus they added a turbocharger for that extra boost. The fuel mile-age on the V6 is estimated at 17-city and 27-freeway and with the four cylinder 21 city and 30 freeway can be expected.

The Genesis Coupe is very well put together with perfor-mance suspension at all four corners and rear wheel drive! Thank you Hyundai, I love rear wheel drive cars, they keep the fun in driving.

Inside is leather treatment in the seating, plus a lot of support for those twisty turns one may encounter. The dash is well done and at night the blue back lighting is very pleasant, operat-

Toyota of Santee celebrates weekend sales event

Bumper-To-Bumperwith Dave Stall

Dave: I have a rather unusual situation, I bought a six foot utility trailer so I can haul my riding lawn mower to the shop when needed and I was thinking about buying a few Quads. So I bought the trailer, the guy at the shop took my truck around back hooked up my trailer, gave me a few safety tips and sent me on my way. It towed beauti-fully until I got home. I tried to unhook the trailer and it wouldn’t budge, I tried everything, so now my truck and new trailer are permanently joined at the coupler. It is a little embarrassing to have to tow my trailer everywhere I go. Any suggestions on what I should do next? Gil.

Gil: The first thing I would do is take it back to where you bought the trailer and ask him to explain why it won’t come off the trailer ball or you could get a socket wrench and loosen the bolt that is under the trailer receptacle. Some times from the factory you will find that that bolt may be out of adjustment, either to tight or to lose, yours is to tight. For all you trailer owners you need to put that bolt in your rotation when your checking wheel lugs for tightness most people don’t even know it is there. Happy trailering! Do you know the proper way to install the safety chains? Crisscrossed!

Dave: Are there really any advantages in leasing a new car, I’m on the fence and can’t decide. Cheryl.

Cheryl: The advantage once you have put down the first and last payment is you lease payments are less that a regular payment, a lot of times maintenance is included and it is easy to trade in and get a new vehicle as long as you take very good care of the car or you will pay for tires and repairs, such as scratches, dings and dents. The down side to leasing is mileage and we are all guilty of driving more than we should and in leasing you will pay around 10 to 20 cents a mile extra so be aware.

Our Best Friends

Dear Trainer,

I have a new dog and I know you recommend using food for training,

but I do have some concerns. I don’t want my dog to get fat, and won’t I always have to carry food around if I want my dog to behave? Are these legitimate concerns, or am I over thinking this?

Signed,Concerned Dog Mom

Dear Concerned,Congratulations on your

new dog, and I’m happy to hear that you are considering positive reinforcement train-ing. You are not over thinking this—those are great questions that deserve answers.

Like you, many people resist using food as a reward when training, or if they are willing to try food as reinforcement, they are unwilling to keep the reinforcement rate high enough in the early stages to make a significant emotional impact on their dog’s thought process. This often happens because they don’t always have a detailed understanding of how and when to use food, so the trend is to focus more on overfeeding issues than the value of using one of the most important resources in a dog’s life as a training tool.

Simply put, food equals survival for dogs, but what re-ally makes this fascinating are some recent studies showing

The best method of training … ask a trainerthat dogs were more excited to work for their food than receiv-ing it in a dish each day.

Domestic dogs that live as fe-ral dogs have been the subject of some great studies recently. By observing feral dogs, sci-entists have learned that they spend a good deal of their day scavenging and looking for food, so when humans put their kibble in the bowl each day, we are forcing our dogs into the unemployment line!

Using food during training helps dogs, twofold: First, they get to “earn” their food and satisfy an innate need to scavenge, and, 2nd, the food itself makes that impact on the brain that builds new behaviors faster and stronger.

With that in mind, it’s impor-tant when you are first teaching your dog any new behavior, or trying to work on modifying an old one, that you are generous with the food in the begin-ning. However, your intention should be to use less and less food as your dog understands the connection, and as the desired behavior builds toward muscle memory. Once you have muscle memory, your dog won’t even have to think when he hears, “Sit.” It will be automatic, just like many of the things we do in our daily lives, such as driving.

Unfortunately, when there is resistance to using food rewards early on, the dog misses build-ing those strong neuropathways for the new behavior and that

often allows the old, unwanted behaviors to surface when your dog is feeling stressed or overly excited by the environment. Stress hormones, whether they manifest from good or bad stress, will always trump un-stable or weak behaviors, and in these situations, you might find your dog pulling the old behaviors out of his toolbox when under pressure. That’s why it’s so important to be liberal with your food rewards in the beginning.

As you progress with your training, the focus can be to fade the food, but only after the behavior is strong, and your dog can do them in many different situations and environments.

To ease your mind about using food rewards, look at the following list and their calorie counts; it should make you feel much better that you really are not going overboard with the food rewards. Most dogs will quickly burn the extra calories during training, and you can always reduce their total daily kibble, not to mention that you have a much better be-haved dog! The size of the treat should be about pea-sized.

Examples of Different Valued Food Rewards and Their Calorie Content:

Vienna Sausages: One sau-sage equals 40-50 treats and has 40 calories

Turkey Hot Dog: One turkey dog equals 80-100 treats and has 70 calories

Cheddar/Jack Cheese: 1 ounce equals 90-100 treats and has 110 calories

Chicken White Breast: 5 ounces equals 80-100 treats and has 80 calories

¼ Cup Typical Dry Kibble: equals 90-125 treats and has 90-125 calories

Fading the treatsOnce your dog knows the

particular behavior you have been training, and can effec-tively perform that behavior in 20 locations with about an 80% (8 of 10 tries) success rate, you can then begin to fade out the treats.

You will first begin by pairing verbal praise along with your treats. You will want your dog to listen for the praise, in hopes and anticipation that there might also be a treat in there somewhere. This is what Las

Vegas is built on-- the antici-pation that if you just put one more quarter into the machine, it will pay off!

To fade the treats on an easy behavior such as, “Sit,” the verbal reinforcement could look something like this:

• Ask your dog to sit• As his butt hits the ground,

say, “Good boy,” and give a treat (praise and treat paired together)

• The next time you ask your dog to sit, just say, “Good boy,” without the treat (anticipation of the treat)

• The following time, praise and treat (score!)

• Then ask for the sit and give the treat again (score again!)

• Then just the verbal praise for a couple of rounds, and so on until you are only using treats on a rare occasion

Getting rid of the treats should

be a goal, but you should always be ready to go back to using them if and when you add more distance or distractions to a behavior— at least until your dog has a clear understanding that this is the same training game as before, just in a differ-ent context.

Most people tend to fade the food at home (which is perfect) but then don’t understand why their dog is unable to focus and pay attention out in the world when they don’t bring treats! In this situation, the dog hasn’t generalized the behavior well enough or at all when the world offers distractions. Using food until the dog can do it in many different places is the first step, and then using less and less food can follow.

As you can see, using treats is a great way to train, and watching calories is pretty easy.
