challenges
of the
future.
In staffing news, we would
like to thank Mr. Allicock
for everything he did here
while being at Whitby
Shores and we wish him all
the best. We also welcome
back Mrs. Stewart to the
Whitby Shores team. Whit-
by Shores continues to be a
fantastic community of learn-
ing, caring and action.
PRIMARY CRAFT ROTATIONS
During the last week of
school before the break,
December 18th to 21st,
Grades 1 to 3 will be par-
ticipating in their annual
craft rotations. Each craft
will be supervised by a pri-
mary teacher. The students
will be placed into mixed
groups and rotate through a
different craft each session.
Your child will have lots of
fun and bring home many
crafts to decorate your
home!
INCLEMENT WEATHER
During inclement weather,
the Durham District
School Board attempts to
keep schools open. It is
the parents’ responsibility
to decide if conditions are
safe for their children to
walk to and from
school. Be sure to call
‘Safe Arrival’ if your child
will not attending. In the
case of extreme weather,
WINTER CLOTHING
As our warm fall changes to
colder weather, please keep
in mind that your children
may spend up to 60 minutes
of every school day outside
and need to keep their bod-
ies warm. This
highlights the need for
warm, dry outside clothing
and hats, mitts, scarves and
boots. It would also be very
helpful to have all belong-
ings labelled. We also take
the time to remind our
older students to dress
warmly during the winter
months ahead. Wintery
weather will be here to stay
soon enough.

KEEP THE SNOW ON THE GROUND
Snow is fun when it arrives,
but please remind your chil-
dren that the snow must
stay on the ground while at
school. This reminder is
both timely and important
to the safety of our stu-
dents: throwing snow is not
permitted on school
grounds due to obvious
safety concerns. For throw-
ing snow, the first offence
will result in a discussion
with administration. The
student’s name will be rec-
orded and the student will
serve a recess detention. If a
second incident occurs, the
student’s name is recorded,
parents are notified and the
student serves another de-
tention. The third incident
may result in a suspension
and parents are notified.
Please discuss this with your
child(ren). We appreciate
your support in keeping
students safe.
We always encourage par-
ents to get in touch with
school staff regarding
school related concerns.
Please do not hesitate to
telephone or make an ap-
pointment to visit the
school. The following is a
list of school personnel
who will assist you:

ject or classroom question
can be resolved by contact-

CLEAR COMMUNICATION
DATES OF SIGNIFICANCE—DECEMBER
December 1 - World Aids Day – United Nations
World AIDS Day is held on December 1st, each year and is an opportunity for people
worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV
and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first global health
day, held in 1988.

DATES OF SIGNIFICANCE—DECEMBER
DURHAM
DISTRICT

BOARD
Success in

of the
future.
December 2 - International Day for the Abolition of Slavery – United Nations
The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, marks the date of the adoption, by the General As-
sembly, of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Ex-
ploitation of the Prostitution of Others (resolution 317(IV) of December 2, 1949).
The focus of this day is on eradicating contemporary forms of slavery, such as trafficking in persons,
sexual exploitation, the worst forms of child labour, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of
children for use in armed conflict.
December 3- 24 – Advent (Christian)
The Advent season lasts for four Sundays leading up to Christmas. At that time, the new Christian year
begins with the twelve-day celebration of Christmastide, which lasts from Christmas Eve until Epiphany
on January 6. (Advent begins on the Sunday that falls between November 27th and December 3rd each
year.) Advent symbolizes the present situation of the church in these “last days” (Acts 2:17, Hebrews
1:2), as God’s people wait for the return of Christ in glory to consummate his eternal kingdom. The
church is in a similar situation to Israel at the end of the Old Testament: in exile, waiting and hoping in
prayerful expectation for the coming of the Messiah. Israel looked back to God’s past gracious actions
on their behalf in leading them out of Egypt in the Exodus, and on this basis they called for God once
again to act for them. In the same way, the church, during Advent, looks back upon Christ’s coming in
celebration while at the same time looking forward in eager anticipation to the coming of Christ’s king-
dom when he returns for his people.
December 3 – International Day of Disabled Persons – United Nations
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is marked around the world annually on December
3rd, as per General Assembly resolution 47/3 of October 14 1992, to promote awareness and mobilize
support for critical issues pertaining to the inclusion of persons with disabilities in society and develop-
ment.
December 10 – Human Rights Day – United Nations
Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10th. It commemorates the day on which, in
1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In
1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all States and interested organizations to observe
December 10th, of each year as Human Rights Day encouraging people to stand up for someone’s
rights.
December 12 – 20 – Hanukkah – Judaism
Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights (and the Feast of Dedication), commemorates the victory of Judah the
Maccabee and religious freedom, and the rededication of the Temple in 165 BCE. It also celebrates the
power of God and the faithfulness of Israel.
December 24 - Last day of Advent - Christianity
On December 17th Christians enter into the last days of Advent, the seven days before the Vigil of
Christmas.
December 25 – Christmas Day – Christianity
Christmas celebrates the anniversary of the birth of Jesus. In 336 A.D., the Catholic Church declared
that it commemorates Jesus’ birth on this date. This date is celebrated in different ways around the
world, with traditions as diverse as the cultures from which they come.
December 26 – January 1 -Kwanzaa – African Heritage
Kwanzaa is celebrated by many North Americans of West African descent in recognition of their African
heritage. The candles of a seven-branched candelabrum representing attributes such as unity, self-
determination, responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith are successively lit
over the seven days of the festival.
