Growing Season Summer Webinar– Water in the Garden

July 13th, will be our second “Growing Season” webinar from 4-6pm at the

Extension office. This month’s topic will be “Water in the Garden” with Denny

Schrock and Jamie Beyer who will talk waterwise landscaping and water features.

“We’ll present the principles of xeriscaping, a low-water use landscaping, and

using low-water-tolerant plants adapted to Iowa landscapes,” said Schrock.

“With climate change, it is apparent Iowans will need to adapt to changing

weather patterns that include more weather extremes—hotter and drier drought

cycles, with more intense storms,” said Schrock. “The waterwise landscaping will

lay the framework for developing a landscape that will better withstand weather

extremes.”

Cost is FREE to attend for Master Gardeners and counts for education hours!

Youth Gardens

Hy-Vee Dietician, Tricia Rau, has teamed up with a few of our Master Gardeners

to offer a youth gardening program at the Dubuque Arboretum.

Y-Camp and Boys & Girls club visit these gardens with Tricia once a week and

learn about growing, harvesting, and cooking garden produce. With eager hands

and inquisitive minds, these children are exploring new foods including raw kale,

fresh picked salads with poppy seed dressing, and swiss chard quesadillas.

Observing the program, Laura Klavitter witnessed kids excitedly trying new foods

and gaining new perspectives about eating healthy. She said, “I bet your parents

don’t even know what swiss chard is!” to the kids one day while they were

enjoying their hot-off-the-griddle quesadillas.

In the weeks to come, Tricia and our Master Gardeners will highlight other garden

grown produce and how to make quick and easy recipes at home.

Tour of Gardens 2015 JUNE 27th, 2015: Tour of Gardens was a HUGE success! Organized

by Jeanne Ambrosy and Lou Anne Arensdorf, the tour featured five

spectacular gardens and educational workshops this year.

While visitors wandered the landscapes, taking in the unique plantings,

flowers, and landscapes, our Master Gardeners offered workshops to

provide education about gardening to our guests. Workshop topics

included: Seasonal Maintenance, Vegetable Gardening, Herbs, and

Composting.

Ticket sales estimate that we had 203 people attend our tour this year!

Thank you Jeanne, Lou Anne, and all our other Master Gardeners and

garden hosts that helped to make this year’s Tour of Gardens

memorable and educational for our community!

Recipe of the Month

Black Bean Roll-ups

Have a story or recipe to share? As Master Gardeners, we all have a favorite recipe for every season. Recipes are like

stories, tell us about your favorite dish as well as what you get excited about, what you

have learned as a Master Gardener, and what keeps you motivated to stay active in

our community!

1 (15oz) can black beans, drained

8 oz. cream cheese (softened)

1/4 c. chopped fresh CILANTRO

5-7 green onions, chopped

1 med. Red bell pepper, chopped

1 tsp. of each: cumin, chili powder, cayenne, tobacco sauce or pepper sauce

1/2 tsp. garlic powder

1/4 tsp. salt

Juice of 1/2 lime

6 lg. flour tortillas

Combine all ingredients except the lime juice and tortillas. Mix well. Stir in lime juice until desired consistency: mixture should be thick but easy to spread.

Spread 2-3 Tbsp. over entire surface of each tortilla, roll to enclose filling, then wrap in plastic wrap.

Chill for 6-12 hours. Cut each roll diagonally into 1 inch slices. Arrange cut side up on serving platter. Serve with Salsa if desired.
