Hello from cold and wet Parks, AZ.  The move has not been smooth and due to all of the rain I still don't have my furnishings and personal items.  They can't deliver because of all the mud.  I live 20 miles west of Flagstaff in a rural community of 1,200 people.   My Mom and pets (Lucy, Yoda, Shadow and Molly) are settling in. Should have Internet and satellite TV by this weekend. I wanted to provide you my new address.

Harvest Festival This Saturday, October

31 from 4 - 8 P.M. Casa de Oración will be hosting a great community festival in Fellowship Hall and Patio areas. It will be a carnival atmosphere with games,

bounce house, cotton candy, popcorn, and prizes. Each child will go home with a bag of goodies.

Casa will be sharing the times of ours and their services and activities. It would be great for some of us to help them and get to know each other better. I heard comments on how nice the shared service was and that we should do it more often. So come on out and get to know our Casa brothers and sisters in this fun activity.

Come on down either Friday or Saturday and help Casa de Oración set up or come help staff the event from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. (or any part of the time) on the 31st

Please let me know as soon as possible of your intent to participate

Senior Adults Met Tuesday, October 20, 2015

The Senior Adult Ministry met this past Tuesday, October 20, 2015 for their monthly luncheon. Twenty-four were present for lunch, fellowship and a wonderful piano concert presented by our guest Ed Zeliff. This was our 3rd time for Ed to entertain us and we are very thankful for his generosity of time and talent. We had another surprise guest who joined us for lunch. Rev Darrell McGowan came to pick some things up from Donna and decided to join us for lunch. It was so good to see him and be able to visit. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 17 when we will meet in FELLOWSHIP HALL for our annual THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON. There is a signup sheet on the counter of the office to volunteer to help, bring food and set up and clean up. Donna is baking the turkeys again this year. We do hope that all the seniors will join us for this festive occasion. Just another reminder that our Christmas Tea will be on Tuesday, DECEMBER 15, 2015 AT

Hospitality & Welcome Ministry Team

Hospitality & Welcome Ministry Team has its first meeting scheduled to plan for our 2016 year!  The date is Wednesday, October 28 at 6:30 P.M. (before the holidays get in full swing.) All of those who offered to help or said YES when I asked, please try to be there.  Bring your ideas and suggestions of what you think would be a fun event for our church family.  Some of you have offered to help but said you can't make a meeting, please call (714-738-7337) or email ([email protected]) with your ideas.  It takes a lot of commitment to plan and execute a successful year.  If you haven't volunteered to help, please do.  We need "DO-ERS" as well as 'PLANNERS' and we would love to have you join our Hospitality & Welcome Team :)

Hope to see you 28.Judi

A Call for Volunteer Gardeners to Grow Sweet Peas for Next Year's Easter Cross.

Last spring, seven of our members grew sweet peas for our Easter Cross, and that gardening venture was a huge success on Easter morning

This year, would you like to become involved in that growing project? Even those who have only a sunny 6' space one foot wide could grow a small trellis of six sweet pea plants. We will provide the sweet pea plants ready to transplant, and even help with the preparation and trellis if you do not have a garden! The sweet peas will be ready to transplant either in the ground or in a small container garden by the end of October. Call the church office, or contact Barry Woodbridge (714 357-2333 or

[email protected]) if you would like to volunteer or learn more.

David Matson LecturesTuesday Night Study Series

David Matson Bible Lecture Series Concludes this Tuesday, Oct. 277:00 p.m. in Chapman Lounge

Title: "Preach the Gospel"

During his first three lectures in this series, David Matson has presented a word study using a series of passages in the Old Testament, in a little-known secular Greek calendar inscription, and in Mark, Luke, and Matthew where the word "euangelion" (good news, glad tidings, or gospel) occurs and this last week we delved into Paul’s use of the word. Paul is actually our earliest source for the term "gospel" being used in a distinctly Christian sense. Actually, the gospel goes back even before him.

5

Page 6: Caller, October 25, -12015

Why care so much about one little word? We care because everyone somehow thinks she/he knows what it means, but few can define the exact content it refers to. We care because it's at the heart of our identity as Christians and as the Disciples of Christ denomination. We care because if we cannot be clear about what it is we proclaim and call others to embrace, how can we have the unity we seek?

And if we do not gain that clarity, we risk our future dissolving into a social movement based on generalized feelings about love, peace, and hope, no different than many other non-religious groups.

His challenge to us has been one of "clarity over agreement." First, get very clear about what our own "Book" meant in using the word "gospel" and then work out our own various responses to that message. This last week, October 27 - Implications

If simply working for social justice is the gospel, how does the church differ from any other fine humanitarian organization? Is there any compelling reason why a person should attend your church? Do we even need the church, if other groups and organizations can do the job better.

One Week From Now . . .

In just one week, the annual Alternative Gift Faire will be held on the Plaza from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. as it has been every year for about 15 years, except on those occasions when it rained.

Annually, this event has usually generated between $12,000 and $15,000 to benefit the various ministries, local and world-wide, that participate by having tablesstaffed by volunteers who assist all participants in making gifts and/or purchasing items that benefit others in

our community and beyond to the so-called “ends of the earth.”

Why is this important? The Alternative Gift Faire gives each of us the opportunity to make a portion of our Christmas giving dollars support causes which reflect the spirit of our Lord who called his followers to “minister to the least of these,” as Dale reminded us in his sermon on Matthew 25:31-45 this past Sunday. What percentage ofyour Christmas giving dollars you choose to use at the Alternative Gift Faire is up to you. As a guideline, we’d suggest that if you plan to spend $500 on Christmas gifts for family members and friends that you consider spending 10% of the amount to purchase gifts for, or make donations in the names of those on your Christmas list at Sunday’s AGF. From whom can you purchase gifts?  At least two participants, American Cancer Fund, overseen by Connie Townsend, and the Third World Hand Arts of Santa Ana will have items you can purchase. To whom can you make a gift in the name of someone on your Christmas list? At least 15 to 20 ministries will be on hand to receive your donations and provide you with greeting cards you can use to describe the gifts you will have given at the AGF. Among the world-wide ministries who will graciously receive your gifts are these: Bread for the World’s Endowment Fund, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, Church World Service and Heifer International. Among the ministries in our community who will welcome your support are: Pathways of Hope, FISH of Fullerton and Released Time Education. Finally, among the denominational and congregational ministries you can support are these: Loch Leven Conference who’ll be part of the 2015 Alternative Gift Faire!

We remind all of our members of the two things we’ve challenged you to do:

First, come out to the Plaza yourself on November 1st and see what the AGF is all about and make a gift of at

6

Page 7: Caller, October 25, -12015

least $10 to the ministry of your choice!Second, get on the phone, or send

an e-mail this week, to invite at least one other person, not connected with our congregation, to meet you at the AGF a week from Sunday, November 1.

Mary Ann Richmond and Jill Scott are coordinating this year’s event. Craig Wallace is in charge of the set-up and take down of the pop-up tents, as well as the tables and chairs needed for it to happen. A number of our members will be at the tables of many of the organizations involved in the AGF. Barry Woodbridge is coordinating the team that will sell Tri-Tip sandwiches and soft drinks so you can get something to eat either before or after you do your shopping. If you’d like to be one of our volunteers for this event speak to Mary Ann, Jill or Craig. They will have a job you can do!

If you are interested in supporting the AGF, but you can’t physically be present next Sunday, we can have someone be your “volunteer shopper.” If you are going to need a volunteer shopper, tell Donna Woodbridge that you will need one and make sure she has the money that you want your volunteer shopper to spend on your behalf.

Finally, let’s make 2015 the year we set a new record of sales and gifts to and through the Alternative Gift Faire! It’s possible, if ALL OF US do our part! Plus, it’s a great timeto get better acquainted with members of the congregation you don’t know well who, like you, will either be shopping or assisting people to do their shopping!

Outreach Ministry

Summary of The October Outreach Ministry Meeting

As we do every month following our meeting, we provide you with a summary of reports received and the actions

taken. So, here’s that summary from our meeting heldon Wednesday, October 14.

1. We welcomed Michael Shepherd as a new member of the Outreach Ministry!

2. We finalized the plans for the annual Alternative Gift Faire set for November 1.

3. Learned that the profit from the 2015 Tri-Tip Project through early October stood at $8,000 plus.

4. Heard that Phil Forbes distributed 48 Hygiene Kits and 13 Bibles, 2 of which were printed in Spanish. The inventory for the Hygiene Kits was exhausted or moreof them would have been given out. A new order has been placed for Hygiene Kits to be given out in November and December at the Hot Meal Ministry. Anyone wantingto contribute to the cost of the Hygiene Kits is welcome to do so. Make a check in any amount, payable to the church, and mark “Hygiene Kits” on the memo line. Put it in the offering plate on any Sunday and your gift will be spent for this project, and this project, only.

5. Scheduled a  trip to a Tijuana Orphanage in partnership with Casa de Oracion for Saturday, December 5. More details to come soon!

6. Our Pathways of Hope food drive in September generated 240 cans of food and $380 in cash. Thanks to all who supported this project.

7. The 2015 Reconciliation totaled $800—way beyond our $600 goal! Thanks for your generous response to this Special Offering.

8. Heard a report about the plans for the final Sunday of the Children’s Sabbath activity on October 18th. This program began on September 13th.

9. Reviewed the bulletin insert concerning Bread for the World’s ministry that was distributed on October 18th.

10. Last year’s Thanksgiving Offering, which supports Higher Education Ministries, totaled $830.00. We

7

Page 8: Caller, October 25, -12015

set a goal of $875.00 for this year’s offering to be receivedon November 15 and 22.

11. Last year’s Christmas Offering, which supports our PSW Regional Church and its ministries, totaled $1,066.00. We set a goal of $1,125.00 for this offering to bereceived on December 20 and 27.

12. We discussed a proposal about the percentage of funds to be designated for Outreach in the 2016 church budget. We have communicated our proposal to theStewardship Ministry regarding this matter as they develop the 2016 Operating Budget for our congregation. Our proposal is that 12% of our offerings in 2016 be designated for the support of all of our Outreach Ministries. This is a 2% increase from the 10% figure which has been the norm for many years.

13. We voted to recommend to the congregation at the Annual Meeting on November 22 that we continue the Global Ministries Task Force with Casa de Oracion in2016. This will be an agenda item at the Annual Meeting.

14. Finally, we reminded the group that the Outreach Ministry would welcome new members in its ranks for 2016. If this interests you, please speak

to either DonnaWoodbridge or Ed Linberg for more information about the responsibilities of being

part of the Outreach Ministry.Submitted by Ed Linberg, Chair
