Mr Matthew Hawkins AP Identity

It is difficult to grasp the reality of the news coming out of the Middle East at present. The scale of violence, the prevalence of fear, and the apparent lack of humanity evident in some of the horrific images is impossible to fully understand. It is therefore easy to respond by saying, “There is no hope” or “There is nothing we can do”. As a Catholic community, it is vital for us to challenge this thinking. I do not mean we should take a political stance and argue for military intervention, but that we need to reflect on what we can do. At St. Patrick’s, we talk often about justice and peace, and in a recent Calling article, I discussed these terms and the importance of them being understood together, not separately. At the College Assembly this week, I talked about this topic also. One simple but powerful action we can take for the people of Iraq who are suffering violence and oppression is to pray. The place and the power of prayer should not and cannot be understated. Prayer provides hope, not just for those who pray, but for those for whom we pray. It tells people that they are not alone and that knowledge empowers, supports and encourages. It provides hope. There is a theory that every decision can be traced back to a core foundation or emotion. The theory is that every choice we make stems from either fear or love. The actions of the violent minorities in Iraq stem from fear. We therefore have a choice – we can respond with fear, or we can respond with love. As Christian people, we are called to respond with love. One way of doing so is through prayer. This week, there is a novena being conducted by the Parish Pastoral Council of St. Joseph's and St. Anthony's at Bracken Ridge in response to Pope Francis' calls for prayer to protect those suffering violence and persecution in Iraq. Today at our College Staff Briefing, we prayed for the people of Iraq, and many of our classes will do so today and tomorrow

through to next week. These prayers will culminate next week at our End of Term Liturgy when we celebrate International Day of Peace. Many students have been busily practicing their origami skills in recent times, as we join with other Edmund Rice schools across the country to send messages of hope and prayer through paper peace doves to the young people of Iraq and Syria. More information on this project can be found at www.eraforchange.com. Pope Francis has asked Catholics everywhere to pray, sending this message: I ask the International community to protect all those suffering violence in Iraq. Violence is not conquered by violence. Lord, send us the gift of peace. Pray for peace. The news coming from Iraq pains me. Lord, teach us to live in solidarity with all those who suffer. I appeal to all families: when you say your prayers, remember all those forced from their homes in Iraq. This morning, our Staff prayed the following prayer, and on September 11, it seems particularly poignant: Lord, the plight of Iraq is deep and the suffering of Christians is severe and frightening. Peace is the foundation of life. Grant the people of Iraq peace and stability that will enable them to live with one another with dignity and joy. Spare their lives and grant them patience and courage to continue their witness of Christian values with trust and hope. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever.“

Congratulations Father Liam SVD who celebrates the 60th Anniversary of his final profession of vows.

Mr Jonathan Hall Community

BHUTAN FAMILY BBQ AND FOOTBALL

‘Community’ is a term we frequently use here at St. Patrick’s. Indeed, it is our ‘sense of community’ that people often remember long after they have departed the College or, indeed, seek out when looking for a school to enrol their sons. Whilst we know the value in creating our own community here inside the College gates, we are ever mindful that we are also part of a local community, a community that so regularly enriches the vibrant, diverse culture we aim to foster here at St. Patrick’s.

Last Saturday 6 September, we were provided with yet another opportunity to engage with the local community, this time through a family BBQ day with members of the local Bhutanese community. The afternoon was spent mingling and chatting over a chicken burger and a friendly game of football. The Bhutanese have arrived in Australia under the United Nations High Commission for Refugees relocation program and have been given permanent residency visas. Many Bhutanese refugees fled the country in the 1990s due to civil unrest between the ruling majority and the ethnic minority and have spent over 20 years living in refugee camps in Nepal. Australia accepts around 5,000 Bhutanese every year and there is a significant community that has settled in our local area. The Bhutanese people who live predominantly in and around Deception Bay approached us to see if they could potentially form a link with our College community, predominantly as a means to simply form relationships with more people in the local area. The afternoon was well attended by both Bhutanese and St. Patrick’s families - an informal and casual setting to get to know each other. The success of the day was apparent with plenty of smiles and everyone eager to maintain and further develop the relaxed friendly relationship.

I was a stranger and you welcomed me (Matthew 25:35)

Matthew’s Gospel compels us to welcome the stranger.

We hope that many more St. Patrick’s families will be able

to attend future planned events so that we can further

extend our hand of friendship to this community.

CHILD PROTECTION WEEK AT ST. PATRICKS In support of increasing the awareness of our students in recognising safe and unsafe places and who to contact when in need of help, last week saw all of our students during Tutor Group time share discussions and important information. The week culminated with each Tutor Group designing a “St. Patrick’s as a safe place” flag. This flag was raised on Friday morning and is illustrated in the picture below.

The Big Science Competition Between 21 and 28 May 2014, Science students took part in the Big Science Competition. We competed against 49, 000 students from over 660 secondary schools in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Iran and Switzerland. The one hour competition provided students of all abil-ities the opportunity to test their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Covering contemporary topics like herbal treatments, saltwater greenhouses and air conditioning, the competition uses everyday examples to test competitor’s science skills. We are delighted to report that William Sked was awarded the title of Top Scorer having achieved one of the highest scores in the competition. William was one of 60 students to achieve the coveted title and was pre-sented with a certificate in recognition of his efforts in addition to earning a cash prize. Mr Luke Donatini Director of Sport

This week has been a special and historic week for Combined Independent Colleges (CIC) sport. On Wednesday 10 September we witnessed the last ever CIC Sporting Carnival to take place, being the annual CIC Track & Field Championships at the State Athletics Facility, Nathan. CIC has been steeped in great sporting moments since its conception in 1957. In this time it has experienced many changes and encompassing 14 member independent Colleges. At the end of 2014 CIC will be dissolved and a Year 5 to 12 Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) competition with 8 member schools will formalised. As a College we could not be more proud of the 42 students from Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 who represented us on Wednesday at the CIC Track & Field Championships. Personally, I have attended a number of these such carnivals in my 25 years of coaching track athletes and I can confidently state that these 42 St. Patrick’s College students were inspirational in their tenacity, determination and total commitment to the success of our team and their team mates. Having one of the smallest teams in terms of numbers, each and every event we competed in was ‘gutsy’ in its approach by our athletes and the flurry of personal best performances continually rolled out throughout the course of the day. With most totally exhausted and drained at the end of the day, they all managed to keep a wide smile on their face as the results were read out: 1st Iona College 2nd Villanova College 3rd Nudgee Junior College 4th Marist College 5th St Patrick’s College 6th Padua College 7th St Laurence’s College 8th St Peter’s Lutheran College 9th Moreton Bay Boys’ College I, together with the other coaches, Mrs Kate Colahan, Mr Steve Tilyard and Ms Kelsey Duke, are extremely proud of each and every one of the athletes that we have had the pleasure to work with, encourage and assist to become the best that they can be. It was truly an honour and privilege and we thank them all for this memorable experience. Well done St. Patrick’s College CIC athletes, you are all champions!
