WELCOME TO CALVARY “The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God!”
Thank you for worshipping with us today. You are always welcome at Calvary!
The Third Sunday After Pentecost - June 25, 2017 God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.
Jeremiah knew the frustration of having his words rejected. Jesus declares that his words may not bring peace, but division. In baptism we are buried with Christ that we may walk in newness of life. As we take stands
for the sake of justice and lose our lives for the sake of others, we need not be afraid. The hairs of our head are counted. In baptism we are marked with the cross of Christ forever.
Commemorations for this week…
Presentation of the Augsburg Confession, 1530 Sunday, June 25, 2017 On this day in 1530 the Ger man
and Latin editions of the Augsburg Confession were presented to the Emperor Charles of the Holy Roman Empire.
The Augsburg Confession was written by Philipp Melanchthon and endorsed by Martin Luther, and consists of a
brief summary of points in which the reformers saw their teaching as either agreeing with or differing from that of
the Roman Catholic Church of the time.
Philipp Melanchthon, renewer of the church, died 1560 Sunday, June 25, 2017 Though he died on Apr il
19, Philipp Melanchthon is commemorated today because of his connection with the Augsburg Confession.
Colleague and co-reformer with Martin Luther, Melanchthon was a brilliant scholar, known as "the teacher of
Germany."
Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria, died 444 Tuesday, June 27, 2017 Cyr il defended the or thodox teachings about
the person of Christ. After a conflict involving all of the major Christian leaders of the time, it was decided that
Cyril's interpretation, that Christ's person included both divine and human natures, was correct.
Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, died around 202 Wednesday, June 28, 2017 This impor tant ear ly church leader
tried very hard to hold to the faith handed down by the apostles. An opponent of the movement known as
Gnosticism, Irenaeus was one of the first to speak of the church as catholic, or linked together.
Peter and Paul, Apostles Thursday, June 29, 2017 These two strong-willed apostles are the pillars of the
church in the first generation after Christ. Peter was one of the Twelve, one who both offered a glorious confession
of faith and later denied knowing Jesus. Paul once led the persecution of Christians, then was converted and helped
bring the faith to non-Jewish people.
Catherine Winkworth, died 1878; John Mason Neale, died 1866; hymn translators Saturday, July 1, 2017
Neale was an English priest who specialized in the translation of Latin and Greek hymns into English. Winkworth
lived in Manchester, England, and devoted herself to translating German hymns. Almost all English-speaking
hymnals include many of their translations.
We welcome MINDY GUINARD to church council. Mindy is replacing Robin Miller on council. The Sanctuary is a place of reverence and worship to honor our Lord. Please...do not bring beverages or food into the Sanctuary, however you may have these items in the other areas of the church. 2017 Flower and Bulletin Sponsor Lists are on the bulletin board in the 1st floor hallway. *Confession and Forgiveness… Pastor and Congregation Let us confess our sins in the presence of God. Most merciful God,
Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in
steadfast love. Amen.
Trusting God’s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one
another. Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being.
Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses,
and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us
near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God’s
love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy
of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God
☩ forgives you all your sins. Amen.

Jeremiah 20:7-13
A reading from Jeremiah. Jeremiah accuses God of forcing him into a ministry that brings him only contempt and persecution. Yet Jeremiah
is confident that God will be a strong protector against his enemies and commits his life into God’s hands.
7O LORD, you have enticed me, and I was enticed; you have overpowered me, and you have
prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me. 8For whenever I
speak, I must cry out.
I must shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the LORD has become for me a
reproach and derision all day long. 9If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his
name,” then within me there is something like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I am weary
with holding it in, and I cannot. 10For I hear many whispering: “Terror is all around! De-
nounce him! Let us denounce him!” All my close friends are watching for me to stumble.
“Perhaps he can be enticed, and we can prevail against him, and take our revenge on him.” 11But the LORD is with me like a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they
will not prevail. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor
will never be forgotten. 12O LORD of hosts, you test the righteous, you see the heart and the
mind; let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. 13Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hands
of evildoers.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Psalm … Lay Reader with Congregational Responses … Psalm 69:7-10 [11-15] 16-18
RE: Answer me O Lord, for your love is kind.
7Surely, for your sake I have suf- | fered reproach,
and shame has cov- | ered my face.
8I have become a stranger to | my own kindred,
an alien to my | mother’s children. 9Zeal for your house has eat- | en me up;
the scorn of those who scorn you has fall- | en upon me.
10I humbled my- | self with fasting,
but that was turned to | my reproach. R [ 11I put on | sackcloth also,
9
and became a by- | word among them.
12Those who sit at the gate mur- | mur against me,
and the drunkards make | songs about me. 13But as for me, this is my prayer to you, at the time you have | set, O LORD:
“In your great mercy, O God, answer me with your un- | failing help.
14Save me from the mire; do not | let me sink;
let me be rescued from those who hate me and out of | the deep waters. R 15Let not the torrent of waters wash over me, neither let the deep swal- | low me up;
do not let the pit shut its | mouth upon me.
] 16Answer me, O LORD, for your | love is kind;
in your great compassion, | turn to me. 17Hide not your face | from your servant;
be swift and answer me, for I am | in distress.
18Draw near to me | and redeem me;
because of my enemies de- | liver me. R
Second Reading … Lay Reader with Congregational Response
Romans 6:1b-11
A reading from Romans. In baptism we were incorporated into the reality of Christ’s death. Our lives in the present are marked and shaped
by his crucifixion, just as our lives in the future will be marked and shaped by his resurrection.
1bShould we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? 2By no means! How can we who
died to sin go on living in it? 3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into
Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism
into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too
might walk in newness of life.
5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him
in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of
sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For whoever has died is
freed from sin. 8But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9We
know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has
dominion over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he
lives to God. 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ
Jesus.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
*Gospel Acclamation … “Alleluia. Lord to whom shall we go? … ELW Page 151
*The Gospel … Pastor with Congregational Response
Matthew 10:24-39
10
The holy gospel according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus warns his disciples that their ministry in his name will meet with opposition,
requiring absolute trust in God and an unswerving commitment to their Lord.
[Jesus said to the twelve:] 24“A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; 25it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have
called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his house-
hold!
26“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing
secret that will not become known. 27What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what
you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. 28Do not fear those who kill the body but
cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two
sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30And even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31So do not be afraid; you are of more value
than many sparrows.
32“Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before
my Father in heaven; 33but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father
in heaven. 34“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring
peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her
mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36and one’s foes will be members of
one’s own household.37Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and
whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and whoever does not take
up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Those who find their life will lose it, and
those who lose their life for my sake will find it.”
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Called together in the Spirit’s embrace, let us pray for the mending of God’s world.
God of grace, we give you thanks for renewing the church in every age (especially through
11
Philipp Melanchthon and the witness of the Augsburg Confession). Bless missionaries
who boldly proclaim your mercy throughout the world. Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer. Generous God, you love the sparrows and shower your whole creation with abundance. Guide
our stewardship by your wisdom so that all life flourishes as you intend. Lord, in your
mercy,
hear our prayer. God of peace, change the hearts of leaders who go to war. Enlighten their minds with your holy
imagination, opening new paths to peace and renewed life. Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer. Compassionate God, you tell us not to fear, but we do. Give courage to everyone who faces
oppression and bigotry, hunger and homelessness. Bring healing and hope to all your
people (especially). Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer. God of community, thank you for the gift of this congregation. Bless all who are new here.
Teach us how to welcome one another. Unite us as we proclaim your love. Shine
through our common life. Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer. We give thanks for all who have been baptized into Christ Jesus and now rest in the fullness of
Christ’s resurrection (especially). Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
All these things, and whatever else you see that we need, we entrust to your care through Christ
our Lord. Amen.

12
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
*Proper Preface… Pastor It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Christ our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: *Sanctus… “Holy, Holy, Holy…” … In Unison … ELW Page 153
*Eucharistic Prayer… Pastor
*The Lord’s Prayer… In Unison Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
*Invitation to Communion… Pastor
Come let us eat, for now the feast is spread. Our Lord’s body let us take together.

If you require this product, please make sure an usher is aware of this. All are welcome at the table of the Lord. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing. If you prefer to receive communion at your seat, please notify an usher.
Lamb Of God … “Lamb of God…” … ELW Page 154
Communion Hymn … “Borning Cry” … ELW Hymn # 732
The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in His grace. Amen.
*Post Communion Prayer….Worship Assistant with Congregational Response Jesus Christ, host of this meal, you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very
self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace,
may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you
are Lord forevermore.
Amen.

My hope is in the Lord.
My hope is in the Lord.
I belong to Him.
He will never let me go-oh-oh-oh.
My hope is in the Lord.
I can count on Him.
My hope is in the Lord.
I can’t help but feel a little down,
A little worried when I look around.
That’s why my hope is in,
My hope is in the Lord.
I fix my eyes upon the God who gives,
‘Cause all I need is what I have in Him.
That’s why my hope is in,
My hope is in the Lord.
My hope is in the Lord.
I belong to Him.
He will never let me go-oh-oh-oh.
My hope is in the Lord.

*Confession and Absolution … Pastor with Congregation
Leader: Let us confess to God and before one another our sins, and especially our failure to
center our entire lives in God.
People: We confess to you, O God, and before one another that we have sinned. You
created us and you know us intimately, and yet we do not believe that centering
our lives in you is best for us. We want to take control. We want to call the shots.
We want to decide what is important and what can be left behind. Forgive us, and
renew us with your Spirit that we may learn to trust you and your healing presence
that makes us whole. Amen.
Leader: God is our loving healer who desires to put us and our relationship right. Receive God’s
love and grace, and live with God at the center.
First Reading … Lay Reader with Congregational Response Jeremiah 20:7-13

Second Reading … Lay Reader with Congregational Response
Romans 6:1b-11 A reading from Romans.
3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ
Jesus were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into
death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might
walk in newness of life.
10The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives
to God. 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

*The Gospel … Pastor with Congregational Response
Matthew 10:24-39
The holy gospel according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus warns his disciples that their ministry in his name will meet with opposition,
requiring absolute trust in God and an unswerving commitment to their Lord.
17
[Jesus said to the twelve:] 24“A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; 25it
is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called
the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!
26“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing
secret that will not become known. 27What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you
hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. 28Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot
kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two sparrows
sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30And even
the hairs of your head are all counted. 31So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many
sparrows.
32“Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before
my Father in heaven; 33but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in
heaven.
39Those who find their life will lose it, and those
who lose their life for my sake will find it.”
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

*The Apostles Creed… In Unison
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried; he descended to the dead. on the third day he rose again; he ascended into
heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
