Late arrivals can also participate. Notes from Pastor Matthew May Was An Amazing Month! With so many exciting things occurring recently in the life of our congregation I felt it prudent to share some as a means of celebrating them further. 1. On Sunday, May 22nd, we received notice and payment of a Linn Foundation Grant. The late Lavon and Ruby Linn were faithful members of Calvary church for many years. The amount is $176,600 and is for brick and mortar improvements to our lighting and windows and air- conditioning in our facilities. Beyond providing a safer and more hospitable environment for our children’s ministries and preschool in the Skidmore Building these improvements will also do so for the many Bible study, 12 step, civic, and other groups that meet weekly in the Harris building. A small team of key leaders are meeting this week to formulate a plan to complete the improvements. Special thanks go to Wynn, Marykate, Margaret, Corwyn, Molly who compiled/ wrote the grant request. 2. On Pentecost Sunday, May 15, we joyously celebrated the baptism/profession of faith of Lily Chen, received the musical leadership of our large children’s choir, and prayed for the 7 families who have indicated they are moving this summer. We also celebrated the musical talents of our congregation at the Recital in the afternoon. 3. We celebrated the life of Evelyn Zeller on Saturday, May 7. For those who knew Evelyn, you know that she was a no-nonsense, determined, and faithful woman of God. During her funeral service we were able to remember and celebrate her life as well as say goodbye to one who will be missed from Calvary for years to come. 4. With regard to my sermon’s, I want to express my appreciation for the way that you receive (apparently without embarrassment) my recent sermon shenanigans: including having Superman & Batman in worship; lighting a fire tornado; and the snake on a stick. Starting this Sunday our June series will be on “The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss” (utilizing the books: Oh, the Places We’ll Go; The Sneeches; and The Lorax) followed by one called “Summer School” (exploring Imago Dei; Logos, and Spiritus Sancti). 5. Our General Conference of the UMC, much publicized in the news, concluded it’s conferencing in Portland last week. As I mentioned in our announcements, many celebrations were held including entering into “full- communion” with two other denominations. Please Google the article in the Washington Post titled "Americans are more polarized than ever. We United Methodists don’t want to be," by Rev. Tom Berlin and Mike McCurry to learn more. Their guest editorial said that despite deep differences over gay marriage and ordination of gay and lesbian people, United Methodists are working hard to stay united while searching for solutions. Thank you for the dedication each of you contributes in helping Calvary be a creative, loving and fruitful Church. Thank you to the many of you who prayed for me and offered excellent sermon ideas for my recent sermon planning retreat. Please continue to keep each other in your prayers, as well as those who may seek to worship God at Calvary, so that we may continue to be a vibrant place of worship, learning and service in Christ’s name. Yours in Christ, Pastor Matthew

Vacation Bible School A Great Time for All! Mark your calendars for: Monday, June 27 through Friday, July 1, from 9-11:30am for Vacation Bible School. Children of all ages (under 2 with a caregiver) are welcome to come and experience UNDER CONSTRUCTION, a Habitat for Humanity Bible School curriculum. This curriculum centers on serving others, and focuses the children on ways we can be helpers to others. Daily experiences with Bible stories, building, drama, movement, snacks and music fill the children with a Sunday school-like experience. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged! People who love to work with wood, love to dramatize Bible stories, love to share cooking experiences, love to sing, and love to play are encouraged to contact Beth Posey [email protected] for more information. Volunteers do not need to commit to every day – even one day makes an impact! Can’t be with us for VBS? Consider helping to prepare some of the wood crafts, or collect materials before the day. Can’t stay for the whole time? Consider being part of a wheelbarrow race or share your exceptional talent, or help put up a tent to raise excitement at the beginning of the day! There is a way you can be part of this ministry of education to the children of our community. Registration forms are available around the church, and on our website.

Some Specific Items Needed: We need old blue jeans cut in a 6x12 rectangle to make tool belts, and 6x6 squares of fabric with 18” ribbon to make sachets. Thanks!

Save the Date! Week of July 4! MAKE OUR MARK Church-wide Mission Trip Calvary will Make Our Mark this summer and spend some time helping others. This year, the week of July 2-8 has been designated CALVARY’S WEEK at SPY (Service Project Youth) located in Christiansburg, VA. Work is done by teams of youth and adults. Are you interested in more information? Please contact Beth at [email protected].

Support MAKE OUR MARK See the Bulletin Board in Harris Hall If you cannot go in July, or send your children, consider helping us with our fundraiser. We have envelopes on our bulletin board (see the picture) from $1-$150 – you “place” the amount in the envelope and donate it. If we fill each envelope, we raise $11,000! That will MAKE A MARK in the Christiansburg community! If you can’t come by Calvary to pick up an envelope, you can donate electronically on our website https://e-giving.org/egivinglogin.asp?id=2600.Tax deductible donations can be in cash or a check (to CUMC- MAKING OUR MARK). For information about registering for the trip, please check out this link. http://www.calmeth.org/#/missions/making-our-mark-spy. Please pray for this mission trip, and those who are working with the community in Christiansburg daily.

Young Ladies’ Small Group Forming First Meeting Sunday, June 12 at 1:30pm On Sunday, June 12, Christy Harvey and Christina Heslink will meet up at IHOP in Potomac Yards at 1:30pm for a little lunch with teen and pre-teen young ladies, Bible study and prayer together. Bring some money for lunch and your Bible foe the study and feel free to bring friends! If you can let Christy ([email protected], 301-537-1778) know if you are coming ahead of time, she will make sure to have a table large enough for all! Christy Harvey, as you know, helps to share God’s love at Calvary in so many different settings. Christina Heslink, wife of Nathan in the choir, mom to new baby Cordelia, is a teacher. Both are interested in doing a Bible study book together, and learning more about their relationships with God.

Prayer Corner Because prayer is so important to the Christian life we want to provide a place where prayers can be shared and lifted up. This space will now provide the names of people or circumstances that are in need of prayer so that we can all pray for sorrows, joys, trials, and celebrations. This week we pray for: All whom we remember on Memorial Day (5/25)

Dottie Cumings (5/31)

Nancy Fearheiley (5/31) Libby Kinnard (5/31)

Elaine Marini (5/31)

Cara McAree (5/31)

If you would like to add a name to this list (please check to be sure it’s okay to share), please submit it in writing by using a prayer card during worship or sending an e-mail to [email protected]. Names will be kept on the list for one month unless a written extension or removal is requested. The date following each name is when the request was submitted to the church office.
