THANKS FOR COMING

We hosted a very successful Champagne Brunch information session in October. With delicious food, and drinks flowing, the event was set to a backdrop of great music from well-known local guitarist, Andrea Kirwin. Guests enjoyed resort and facility tours, and question time gave everyone a really good opportunity to ask questions on a host of random topics from home insurance and the weekly resort meals menu, to questions about hosting family and friends at the resort. If you’d like to put your name down to be invited to our various future events, phone our Sales Centre on 1800 55 66 77.

As the days get longer and the weather heats up, we’re looking for ways to wel-come summer into our homes. Melissa Park, co-founder of Studio Collective and consultant to Palm Lake Group, shares her tips for styling your home for the warmer months.

Our recent Cocktails on the Deck event was a colourful summer celebration – with a magician thrown in for good measure! Want to come along to our fab events? Simply call our Sales Centre and speak to one of our consultants on 1800 55 66 77.

SUMMER STYLE

COCKTAILS TASTE BETTER BY THE POOL

Summer and the ‘Silly Season’ are right around the corner, and this year – more than ever before – we’re in need of a celebration. Even if you won’t be hosting family or festive events, sprucing up your space in true summer style is a great way to celebrate the holiday season. The best part is, it doesn’t have to take much effort. According to one of Palm Lake Group’s design consultants, Melissa Park, re-vamping your space for summer is as simple as one, two, three.

“When it comes to summer styling, there are three things I always recommend,” says Melissa. “The first is to bring the outside in, the second is to refresh your soft furnishings and the final tip, and arguably most important, is to declutter.”

Connecting your indoor and outdoor entertaining areas is key in the warmer months. Throw open those doors and windows to let the fresh air flow, and ensure your outdoor space is set up for entertaining success – Melissa recommends multi-purpose furniture, for example, to offer flexibility. One of Melissa’s other favourite ways to ‘bring the outside in’ is to add greenery in the form of plants. While different indoor plants will thrive in different spaces, there are

a few safe bets worth trying. Beginner plant ‘parents’ should opt for Devil’s Ivy, Aspidistra elate (otherwise known as ‘cast iron plant’) and Zamioculcas zamiifolia (otherwise known as Zanzibar Gem or ‘ZZ plant’).

Melissa’s second tip – refreshing your soft furnishings – is just as easy to implement. All it will take is the introduction of some brightly coloured cushions, bedding, towels and perhaps even a rug or two to overhaul your space and get your home looking summer ready. “Introducing these soft furnishings in lighter, brighter colours can easily create a sense of freshness, especially in our warm Australian summers,” says Melissa. “A natural palette teamed with crisp whites, light blues and bright patterns will serve you will this season. Natural materials work all year ‘round, but particularly in the warmer months. Think breathable, soft textures such as cotton, wool and linen, which will all keep your home feeling cool and inviting.”

But the best way to lighten and brighten your space for the summer months? Declutter! Parting ways with the things you no longer need will give you room to appreciate all that you do have and will help your home to look and feel guest-ready.

STAYING ACTIVE, STAYING HAPPYWhile water-based activities keep us cool while we exercise, there are plenty of other ‘cool’ options for how to stay active, healthy and happy this summer, right here on our resort grounds. Try some of these ideas on for size…

There’s no need to get a sweat up to stay fit during summer – thanks to the many kinds of exercise that can be done in the water, it’s never been easier to cool down and tone up at the same time. Once upon a time, those looking to exercise in the water were limited to swimming laps. Now, with the advent of fitness styles like H2O Pilates and Tai Chi Hydro – not to mention classic aqua aerobics – there is a variety of water-based fitness for everyone.

“Water-based fitness is beloved for its health benefits, and not just by seniors,” says Di, who has been teaching water classes for 30 years. “There are so many styles of water-based fitness now, all serving different – though equally beneficial – purposes.”

Aqua aerobics is a favourite for Palm Lake Resort residents, and for good reason. Ideal for those who have issues with weight-bearing exercises, aqua aerobics helps you increase muscle strength without straining.

“Aqua aerobics – along with many other styles of water-based fitness – removes the force of gravity which, when combined with the buoyancy provided by the water, helps you feel lighter and nimbler,” says Di.

Forms of exercise that may present complications on land can be made more accessible when performed in the water. Di explains that H20 Pilates, for example, is less cardiovascular based than traditional Pilates, allowing you to better focus on posture, flexibility and a deep core connection. Aqua aerobics, on the other hand, offers a cardiovascular workout while also encouraging core engagement, muscle strength and flexibility.

“One great benefit of working out in the water is that it keeps you cooler, so there is less risk of

overheating,” says Di. “Water also allows for more adaptability in terms of the intensity of your workout. It is very easy to maximise the force of the water resistance to suit your strength, thus tailoring your workout.”

Exercising in a vertical position offers additional benefits, particularly for those with limited neck and shoulder mobility. Keeping your head above the water also allows for greater social interaction and engagement with the music being played, which Di says is one big reason people keep coming back for more.

“To the untrained eye, water-based training can look like it doesn’t take much effort,” says Di. “But there are so many benefits to working with water, and when you do it right, you will feel them.”

Di teaches aqua aerobics here at Caloundra Cay on Tuesdays at 8.30am and Pilates on Mondays at 8.30am. To find out more, you can contact Di on 0403 087 594

WONDER OF WATERAs we head into summer, the sports making a splash are ones that can be done in the water. We spoke to Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay trainer Di Clapp about the benefits of water-based fitness.

Check out just some of the great costumes from our recent Oktoberfest residents’ party. Caloundra Cay really is a social community and we like any reason to dress up and be merry!

CARETAKERS’ REPORT OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATIONS

DOING SWIMMINGLY

Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay caretakers Ray and Lynn are used to welcoming new neighbours into this popular Palm Lake Resort community, but Ray welcomed some ‘different’ kinds of neighbours recently - 500 of them to be precise! These baby silver perch were released into the resort lakes recently. We look forward to watching them mature.

Can you believe it – it’s nearly Christmas again and what a year it has been! Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay has flourished with an influx of new residents, new committees and a plethora of new activities. You will definitely need a big diary to keep up with what’s on here! The events planned for the next few months are nothing short of sensational, from Melbourne Cup in November to Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties in December as well as a Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser. But before we look forward to the Christmas season, our Social Committee (special thanks to you, Wolly and Anke) organised the most amazing Oktoberfest for our resort. What a great day we had, with German sausage, sauerkraut and potato salad to keep hunger at bay. Our ladies looked lovely in their traditional outfits and our gents in their lederhosen. There was much music and singing, and a good time was had by all who attended.

It’s a case of ‘eyes down’ at 9am on Tuesdays for our new bingo sessions. Check out the photo of our first happy winners (above right)! Also of note: Following bingo on the second Tuesday of the month is a special morning tea put together by your social committee. This is a great meet-and-greet to introduce new residents to their new resort and the wonderful people that live here at Caloundra Cay. FYI, there are 125 homes occupied with 225 residents as of October 31, 2020. Our current statistics are 47 per cent males and 53 per cent females with 78 per cent of homes housing two occupants and 22 per cent in single households.

We would like to wish a very happy birthday to the following people for the coming months:

November: Jenny A, Max M, Bill M, Margaret M, John B, Dorothy C, Garry B, Evonne J, Ross R, Joe M, Maggie B, Linda H, Sue L, Bill H, Sandra P, Fay R, John C, Stuart A, Roger D, Rod B, Andrew B and Noela O.

December: Joy B, Barrie H, Frances M, Warwick W, Noela W, Sue W, Arnaldo M, Shirley C, Matt V, Merryl B, Ray C, Judy K and Kenneth G.

We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
