CAMBODIA AT A GLANCE

CAMBODIA’S CONSTRUCTIONAND MINING SECTOR

The World Bank has forecasted a 6.9% growth rate for Cambodia for 2018, a slight upgrade from its last report, which set the rate at 6.9.

Construction projects approved by Cambodia’s Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning & Construction increased substantially in overall value during 2016 compared to the previous year, according to gures from a report released by the Ministry in January 2017. While the number of projects was up by 331 to a total of 2,636 last year, the value of investment more than doubled from $3.3 billion in 2015 to $8.5 billion in 2016.

Land Management Minister Chea Sophara attributed the surge in the value of approved construction projects to two main factors: investor condence in Cambodia attracting more big developers, and his team carrying out a government directive to improve the speed and quality of services.

Hann Khieng, Vice President of the Cambodia Constructors Association, said the surge in project value – over 400 per cent year-on-year – was because the new Land Management Minister, Chea Sophara, “understands the needs of investors” and is keen to accommodate them. He said that since coming to oce the progressive minister has readily given a green light to projects submitted under his predecessor, Im Chhun Lim, including many large-scale developments.

A joint survey by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, World Bank, International Monetary Fund and Asian Development Bank in 2011 indicated that Cambodia needs an estimated $13 billion investment in infrastructure works by 2020 if the country intends to continue attracting foreign investment.
