ACAT assessments involve assessors coming to ones home and delving into a wide range of topics, after which a decision is made about care needs including temporary home care packages. Then one lands up on a waiting list prior to being admitted to a permanent care facility. If one is receiving ACAT services but needs to go to hospital, the ACAT side will be suspended pro tem. NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

This meeting turned out to be an interactive session led by Alexandra Holcbarova, and the topic was ‘Strategies to

Improve Your Life’. Alex started with the quote ‘Ten men wisely led will defeat 100 without a head’, and pointed out

that it is our thoughts that dictate our feelings – therefore thinking can change our lives. We tend to judge ourselves

by comparing our situation with others, but this leads to wanting to look better or wishing to live in better

circumstances, whereas we should aim to feel better. The average person has about 70,000 thoughts a day, and

these, together with our behaviour patterns, lead to the results or outcomes that we experience. Our behaviour and

feelings are often blamed on external events or other people, but it is our own responsibility to take charge of our

thoughts so that we achieve positive feelings. Often procrastination is a fallback action, and we fall into the trap of

taking refuge in our ‘comfort zone’. We are then effectively allowing our past to shape our thoughts and therefore

our feelings, and this can have an adverse effect on our lives right now. We must set goals to shape our lives, and if

this involves adopting a new habit, then having identified this new habit, we should think about why it is important to

us and how it should be implemented. In addition to positive thinking we can use other ways of maintaining a calm

demeanour, for example using breathing techniques. Another contributing factor to feeling good is balancing our

self-focussed thoughts with thoughts about other people, so a mix of strategies is often the way to go.

Sign: Do not cross this paddock unless you can do so in 9 seconds; the bull can do it in 10!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

We welcomed Helen Davidson once again to deliver the Schools Programme talk on Brave Parenting – the 8 ‘R’s.

The topic is very pertinent in this day of social media etc., and Helen set about outlining each ‘R’ for the benefit of

those present. Regulation is a brain based skill that takes time to develop, but practise makes progress. Deep

breathing helps to bring about calmness; Rating skills enable a child to be rational about coping with challenges e.g.

not getting their own way; Role modelling is essential so that the child is shown how to deal with a situation. It

fosters being rational and how to cope with challenges; Respect is developed through a healthy hierarchy, an

essential ingredient in any family; Rules exist abundantly in modern societies and strong boundaries prepare

children for life. Don’t be afraid to say “no”, and don’t let your child catch ‘affluenza’!; Routine is something that

brains love because it brings stability; Risks are a two edged sword – acceptable and unacceptable. Let your child

take acceptable risks such as climbing a tree (only 1 in 4 Aussie kids climb trees these days!), but reduce

unacceptable ones, such as accessing pornography, by talking about them; and finally Rewards should be available

and dispensed as often as possible. And don’t forget to display your unconditional love to your children. A number of

questions rounded off a most interesting morning.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

An action packed meeting this time, starting off with Krystal Skelin, Leader of Learning Science at Newman College,

presenting a video made by Ethan Lopez and Riley Somers – the two students who attended the Conoco Phillips

Science Experience in January. Unfortunately they couldn’t be with us in person, but clearly they had a very

memorable time. This was followed by our Guest Speaker Thomas Wagner, a member of the Executive at Newman

College, who talked about the education challenges posed by Covid-19. Newman not only has 1900 students and

300 staff, but it also provides facilities for 8 community sporting clubs. The advent of Covid meant that things had to

be changed fast to cope with the restraints. Happily their $9m capital works programme could continue, but the

School implemented a crisis management plan to deal with communication and remote learning requirements. The

latter was introduced within ten days of the start of the pandemic, and it was necessary to upgrade the School’s IT

capability significantly. They experienced problems in getting basic supplies such as cleaning products and toilet

rolls, but the last year has provided some positive outcomes, especially in their remote teaching techniques and the

development of virtual tours for prospective students and their parents. Thanks Thomas – it was most interesting.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

A contingent from Woolworths Floreat Forum attended our meeting – Manager Roscoe Freese, Luke Rudman,

Customer Service Manager Georgia Statten, long serving employee (32 years) Derek Hart, and his Mum

Anneke. President Jeremy presented Derek with a Pride of Workmanship Award, and Georgia summarised his

career to date, emphasising his excellent work ethic and the fact that customers always respond positively

towards him. Roscoe also praised Derek’s attitude and contribution, and then answered a number of questions

from the floor about Woolworths. On-line shopping has increased markedly since Covid-19 set in, but this is

unlikely to impact adversely on supermarkets’ presence in shopping centres; it is the smaller shops that are

suffering from the lower traffic levels. Woolworths tries to source as much stock as possible from local

suppliers, but some of these suppliers can’t or won’t deal with them. However 96% of the fruit and vegetables

sold are grown in Australia. Max proposed a vote of thanks, and PP Peter Pearse thanked Woolworths for their

help in providing stock at manageable prices for our regular Wembley Junior Cricket Sausage Sizzles.

Jim Berry announced that the RSL ANZAC Collection will happen on Monday 19th April, and it is likely that we

will be asked to help at the Floreat Forum. More details later.

The Floreat Forum is holding a “Join Our Club” Community event on Saturday 27 February between 9.00 am

We’ll be calling for volunteers shortly to attend on the day.

Marylin Kench from the Melville Club gave us details of the 100 years of Rotary Centennial Ball celebration

being held on 23rd April at the Ritz Carlton Perth – a Black Tie event. Also, don’t forget the upcoming District

Conference from 5th to 7th March at Optus Stadium.

Max Puddey advised that Celia Hammond MP has donated an item of equipment to the Community Shed.

Water is heavier than butane because butane is a lighter fluid.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

This week’s meeting was “home-grown” in that the Guest Speaker was our very own Jeremy Wood. Jeremy gave

an interesting presentation entitled ‘Woods’ Antarctica Trip’ – a summary of the 13 hour scenic charter flight

that he and Jeanette took fairly recently. It takes about 4 hours to fly from Perth to Antarctica, and once there

the aircraft drops to an altitude of 10,000 feet so that passengers can get a good look at the icy continent.

Antarctica on average is the coldest, driest and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all

the continents. Antarctica is almost twice the size of Australia, and over the years various nations have claimed

sovereignty over it, starting with the French in 1840 through to Argentina in 1943. Australia made its claim in

1933. The flight went backwards and forwards over various parts such as the Casey Station, one of three

permanent stations and research outposts in Antarctica managed by the Australian Antarctic Division, and it

was amazing to learn that Casey is 2,500 kms away from the South Pole! The place that receives most rain is

Law Dome, and the Wilkins Airfield has a 5 km long runway! Thank you Jeremy for the lovely pictures too.

you are coming unless you advise Libby otherwise (see below). For catering purposes could you please

advise Pres. Jeremy whether or not you would like to attend the Scarborough meeting as well

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Our recent meeting was a joint one hosted by the Matilda Bay Club, and included Rotarians from Matilda Bay,

Western Endeavour and Cambridge. We were privileged to hear an address by Prof. John Newnham AM, the

2020 Senior Australian of the Year. John is Head of the UWA Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology based at

KEMH, and Chief Scientific Director of the Women and Infants Research Foundation. He was born and

educated in WA and graduated in medicine at UWA. He acquired an early interest in obstetrics at KEMH, with

particular emphasis on the prevention of pre-term delivery. Pre-term birth is the major cause of death in

children. In 1989 John pioneered the Raine Study which involved investigating 2,900 unborn babies from early

pregnancy and then following their health for life. This was the world's first pregnancy–focused lifetime study,

and is now entering a third generation. More recently John has researched how the rate of pre-term birth may

be lowered. This programme has been expanded to a national scale, and a 20% reduction rate has been

achieved to date. This was an outstanding address which was enjoyed by all present.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Due to the sudden hard lockdown resulting from the Covid-19 situation, our first regular meeting for 2021

turned into a Zoom on-line meeting with 14 of our 22 Members attending. It was scheduled to be a Club

Forum anyway, and a number of topics were addressed.

Graham McHarrie gave an update on the East Java Hearing project particularly in the light of Marie

Kormendy’s passing away. Don Holywell and Graham will be meeting with the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley

representatives in order to discuss some suitable way of remembering Marie whose funeral was attended

by many people including Pres. Jeremy. We discussed our fund-raising Fete and what might transpire in

2021; our recruitment efforts are an ongoing commitment for all Members; our recent BBQ at the Bowling

Club went off well, but there are lessons to be learnt on the catering front; Don Holywell will be asked to

give the Club an update on our past Exchange Student Jaz Hernando’s news, and Pres.Jeremy reported

that he has attended various District things which are now ‘cranking up’!

We enjoyed a terrific Christmas Party at the Puddey’s home on 9 December, and our thanks go to Jan

and Max for all the effort they put into it. Thanks too to all the other people who helped, including the

Pearse’s grand-daughters. It was a wonderful night of fun and fellowship!

The Bunnings Sausage Sizzle took place on Saturday 12 December at the Homebase site in Salvado

Road, and we raised $844.37! Thank you to all who helped on the day, especially to those rostered on

the stall: Libby Larsen, Cate Barlow, Graham & Keith McHarrie, Peter & Jean McSkimming, David &

Judy James, Mike & Helen Mullin, Frank Nathan, Don Holywell & his friend Pete, Pam & Roger Veary

and Honorary Member Fred Bollinger.

A Roman man walks in to a bar, holds up two fingers on his right hand, and says “five beers please”.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

We started off the new calendar year with our customary BBQ at the Cambridge Bowling Club, and a very

pleasant evening was had by all. Jan Puddey put in a huge effort in organising the chicken and salads,

helping to set up etc., ably assisted by Pam Veary and Max, and our special thanks go to them. Thanks to

Libby Larsen for co-ordinating attendance etc. as well as providing the Rocky Road to cap off the meal, and

our Chefs extraordinaire deserve a mention – Max, Peter Wagner and Don Holywell. A big thank you to the

many ladies in particular who got stuck into the washing up and general tidying up at the end. Thanks also

go to Jim and Mary Anne Berry for the loan of cutlery, and to Jeremy and Jeanette for transporting the

leftovers to OzHarvest. Unfortunately it’s impossible to name everyone who helped, but our sincere thanks

go to all who did. We were pleased to welcome our ADG Jane O’Leary, John and Pipina Travlos, Rob and

Geraldine Gray, plus Rhonda Walker and Lisa Scheiner (the Coffee Combo!). We were challenged by the

presence of a rowdy Zumba class in the hall just before our function, but it all turned out fine in the end!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

We had a Club ‘housekeeping’ meeting this time, during which we conducted a de-briefing after our very successful

Fete – held in conjunction with St Edmund’s Church in Wembley. President Jeremy asked Fete Committee Chairman

Peter Pearse to lead the discussion, and it was a very useful exercise. The location for the event was ideal, and the

total involvement by Club Members and their families was wonderful. Credit card sales accounted for about 20% of

the turnover, but at future events we expect this to increase a lot. We need to find out through surveys what drew

the patrons to the event, e.g. radio, Post newspaper coverage etc., as it was suggested that letter box pamphlets will

become much less effective. Opportunities for improvement include manpower rotation on all stalls; stall leaders to

take control of accessing their needs; allow much time for setting up stalls, especially the White Elephant; obtain all

the gazebos we need from Newman College sooner rather than later; position BBQs away from the wind, and don’t

use frozen onions!; obtain studier racks for the clothing, perhaps from the Community Shed; arrange good signage

for the credit card facility table (and what about debit cards?); provide vouchers for workers to get free food, and

extend the PA system over the whole site. Perhaps a future Fete could be held at Lake Monger?

We wish all of our readers a

Merry Christmas and a healthy,

safe and Happy New Year

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Sarah Macauley and Tim Campbell from the RAC jointly addressed our meeting. The RACWA has 3 major pillars

behind it’s strategy, namely Safety, Sustainability and Connectedness. The challenge is: how do we make our streets

safer and more user friendly for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians? 50% of accidents occur in Regional areas, but

only 20% of the population lives there. Many of the Regional accidents involve City dwellers. Covid-19 has resulted in

dramatic changes to transport patterns; traffic numbers fell to virtually nil when the lock-down was introduced in

March, but in recent times it has reached levels around 20% higher than January 2020 figures! This is due to a lack

of confidence in the hygiene on public transport, the use of which has only recovered to 80% of previous levels. In

January hygiene was an issue for 2% of the population, but that rose to 49% by May this year. There are various

ways in which the traffic pressures can be eased, such as facilitating the concept of working from home; staggering

the work start and finish times; encouraging the use of public transport by providing hygienic conditions and giving

buses priority where possible; establishing a Smart Transport Technology Roadmap for Perth; and providing better

quality of life through community connectedness opportunities e.g pop-up piazzas and pedestrian gathering points.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Today’s meeting was devoted to the arrangements for our combined Fete this Saturday 21st November. Many people

have already put in a huge effort, led by Peter and Leonie Pearse and Frank Nathan. The Covid-19 backdrop has

made planning difficult, but we have worked well with the Church people and the weather will be good! We have had

a wide spread of publicity but we need to keep going on this until the last minute. Set-up will take place partly on

Friday afternoon but also between about 6.30 am and 7.45 am on Saturday. Please: share this and all recent emails

from Peter with your Partner; park away from the site (e.g. at Joan Watters Centre) and walk; wear Rotary shirts,

caps or aprons to help publicise our Club; drop off cakes etc. at the Church on Friday afternoon, having wrapped

items in labelled cellophane if possible, and include a list of ingredients on the outside; stall keepers should resist

requests to discount items early in the day – these usually come from professionals who seek to on-sell the items

elsewhere; be flexible and tolerant on the day – we need to go with the flow; the last two hours (noon to 2.00 pm)

may need discounting in order to get rid of stock; use the MC to advertise this and any other special happenings;

make sure you’re familiar with the finance procedures; call on John Travlos if you need more manpower! Good luck!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Sean L’Estrange, MLA for Churchlands visited us with Staff member Lainey to discuss his role as a Shadow Minister

in Opposition. Sean is currently the Shadow Minister for Corrective Services; Emergency Services; Defence Issues;

and Racing and Gaming, and each portfolio has different requirements. Corrective Services is a real challenge due

to the over-representation of indigenous people in custody. Whilst this occurs throughout Australia, it is particularly

high in WA. Sean enjoys Emergency Services because most of the personnel in this field are volunteers. A full audit

of facilities is needed to bring them up to scratch. Defence Issues is a complicated portfolio because Defence is a

Federal Government responsibility, but the problems that exist need considerable State input to get the right

answer. For example, defence of the north west of WA is co-ordinated from the Northern Territory, but we need the

capability here in WA in order to send a message to other countries, particularly those in the same time zone. There

is also a problem with official war graves which are not receiving the attention and respect that they deserve. Liquor

licensing issues occur in the Racing and Gaming portfolio as a result of the abuse of alcohol in various areas, and

the advent of Covid-19 has slowed the sale of the TAB. Thank you Sean for a most interesting presentation.

Heard in the lab: How do I find out the sex of that chromosome? Take off its genes!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Sarcoma specialist Prof. Evan Ingley originally studied in New Zealand and later in Australia and Switzerland, finally

returning to Australia and setting up a Cell Signalling Group here in Perth. This led to personalised medicine for

sarcoma patients, which seeks to use knowledge gained from treating other types of cancer in the treatment of

sarcoma cancers with a similar gene signature. There are 150 types of sarcoma cancer, although together they form

only about 1% of all cancers. In Australia there are around 1200 new cases each year, and these are more prevalent

in younger people (up to about 21 years) and in the over 50s. The 5 year survival rate is in the region of 70%. Evan

cited tests that were done on an initial base of 12 patients, and that base was later enlarged by a further 30 new

patients. Analysis of the results has been entrusted to a so called ‘super-computer’, and the research is comparing

cells of two different intensities. The team has discovered a gene that seems to control the distribution of cancer

cells, and they’re also looking at novel sarcoma risk genes. This has led to the discovery of 2 new genes and work is

being done to understand what these genes do. The research also seeks to find out how patients react to various

drugs. This very interesting session was rounded off with a number of questions from the floor.

Remember – in English double negatives are a no-no

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Tim Chapman, a wool broker who has been involved in the industry for the last 50 years or so, came along to let us

know about what he describes as a hair-raising production process! The first Merinos were introduced into Australia

in 1797 – all 26 of them, and they were brought here from the Cape of Good Hope. By the 1970s the number of

such sheep had reached 180 million, but these days it is down considerably to about 70 million. Nevertheless as at

2019 wool was still in the top 15 of Australia’s export products as measured by value. China is a very prominent

customer these days, and so they dictate the terms of trade. In general the price of wool has fallen from around

1800 cents per kilo a couple of years ago to about 870 cents in recent Covid-19 times, and so stockpiling is taking

place. The growers face volatile market conditions and unpredictable cost fluctuations, most of which are totally

beyond their control. Tim explained the processes that wool goes through to get to market, and gave us an idea of

the different grades and usage patterns. For example woollen vests are good for sleeping in as they ‘breathe’,

resulting in a comfortable night for the user. Thicker fibres are used for items such as carpets, whilst finer fibres go

into quality clothing such as suits. Thank you Tim for a very interesting talk! It was a sheer delight!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Our get-together started on a very formal basis; we had our Annual General Meeting. This was completed in only a

few minutes as all the mandatory documentation had been circulated well in advance. The current Board will carry

over into the 2021/22 year as there were no competing nominations. A variety of topics were covered during the

subsequent Club Forum, including the Smile For a Reason Lottery put on by our Club and Mt Lawley – see Pres.

Jeremy’s email dated 12th October – we should circulate details widely please, and remember Facebook action!; our

Fete (21st November) still requires a lot of work – see the action list below and take heed of Peter Pearse’s

forthcoming email please; our involvement in Cans for Christmas is simply to distribute leaflets (as per a set plan) to

encourage people to drop off items at the Matthews Centre carpark; David James has organised Fete publicity on

Capital Community Radio, and it was agreed to purchase a year long package of publicity on Curtin Radio for $88 –

paid for by donations from Members; the Bowling Club is having a Melbourne Cup function – details from them; We

have a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on Saturday 12th December. Peter McSkimming suggested various avenues to

secure guest speakers and for fundraising; and this week’s Schools Programme had to be cancelled.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

David Thomas, President of the Claremont RSL sub-Branch, came to remind us about Remembrance (or Poppy) Day,

and to let us know what we can do to help. This year it will be on Monday 9 November, and the RSL will be collecting

at the Swanbourne & Claremont Train Stations, Claremont Quarter, and possibly the Floreat Forum. Our Club’s

Poppy Day School collections will also go ahead and efforts will be made to educate the teachers and students

about the intent: it aims to generate donations which go towards the welfare of needy service people. It is quite

startling to learn for example that there are a number of veterans who are homeless and who desperately need help.

David himself spent 21 years in the army, and since retiring from that he has been involved in various catering

activities and latterly running his own business. Last year the Claremont RSL sub-Branch raised about $4K, and

hopefully our Rotary efforts will help them surpass that amount this year. The RSL is also planning a BBQ at the

Claremont Showground on Wednesday 11 November, and a bugler from Churchlands Senior High will do the

honours at 11.00 am. David was accompanied by his wife Sharon and by Alan Wilson, President of the Cambridge

RSL sub-Branch, and we were glad to see John Travlos again and Honorary Member Jeanette Wood.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Our newest Member, Stan Robins, took to the podium to give us a brief history of his life so far, and what an

interesting and humorous discourse it was! Stan was born in North Perth in 1938, and his father was a master

cabinet maker as well as a musician – playing the banjo, ukulele and drums. During the war years Mr Robins was

put in charge of woodwork for the American Navy, but between Christmas and Easter the family typically moved to

Scarborough where they lived in an undercroft garage right on the beach. Stan became a mascot of the Scarborough

Surf Life Saving Club! The family moved to Melbourne in 1945 and Stan left school at the end of year 11 to help his

dad make canopies for utes. Back to Perth in 1949, Stan got involved in a range of business ventures with his dad

and his brother. Stan also got involved in ballroom dancing where he met Gwenda in 1956, and in 1958 they got

married. Sixty two years later they’re still going strong and living in the same suburb where they first bought a house

in the early 70s! Stan also developed a liking for sailing, and took off for Bali and Singapore after buying a 44ft

yacht. Business ventures were still coming thick and fast, but Stan managed to circumnavigate Australia although

Gwenda’s sea legs were not entirely reliable! We’re happy to have you both on board at Rotary, Stan – thank you!

Two silk worms had a race; they ended in a tie!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Apart from 18 Members we also welcomed 6 Wives and 29 visitors from the Rotary Clubs of Osborne Park and

Western Endeavour, who all came along to hear Celia Hammond MP, Federal Member for Curtin, give an update on

her perspective of politics today. Celia’s first 6 months in politics was ‘lost’ due to the mental challenges of adapting

to the system, as well as to the physical challenges of Parliament House in Canberra! The pre-selection and selection

processes are brutal in themselves, so a thick skin is needed! The onset of Covid-19 meant that all politicians

suddenly had to help people with things like accessing Centrelink and advising them on how JobKeeper works! The

worst fall-out from Covid-19 is the mental health impact, which is enormous. The resultant budget deficits can’t

prevail forever, and so support measures must be curtailed in the long run. Celia will continue concentrating on

community issues and education matters, and on the latter she says that university degrees are not for everyone.

However higher education has now reached 40% (up from a traditional 20%) of student activity, but this erodes the

demand for training in trades and related skills, thus causing an imbalance. Many questions followed, all of which

contributed to a most interesting morning. Thank you Celia for coming along once again!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Francois Sauzier, Planning and Projects Officer, Cycling with the WA Department of Transport, came along to

appraise us of the Western Australian Bicycle Network (WABN) Plan which has been in existence since 2014. The

objective is to make cycling safe, connected, convenient and a widely accepted form of transport here in WA, and

the Department gets input from numerous sources such as local government, WA Police and the RAC. Included in

the WABN Plan are a long term Cycle network for Perth and Peel; expansion of the Principal Shared Path Network

Strategies (a major transport strategy); Perth Bicycle Network projects; Regional Bicycle Network projects; a Safe

Active Streets programme; and Perth Central Area projects. The Safe Active Streets programme is designed to

provide different treatments based on safety considerations, and by slowing the traffic down the area concerned will

be made safer for all users. Francois then outlined the programme that is specific to the Town of Cambridge, and he

also told us about the effects of Covid-19 on the Plan – basically creating a greater demand for riding!

In the audience today we welcomed Honorary Members Jeanette and Leonie, Rhonda Walker, Richard Scarff, Ted

Grobicki, and Bruce McPherson – thank you all for coming along!

up was Amelia Corbett from Floreat Park speaking about "The Importance of Supporting Australian Farmers", and

the second runner-up was Jacob Holmes from Wembley, who spoke on "Music". There was a great atmosphere

created by the 80 people in the audience which included the three School Principals, Teachers, families in support,

many Rotarians and their Partners. Thanks go to the adjudicators Jean McSkimming, P/P Peter Burns and visiting

Rotarian Yvonne Hart, and to P/P Mike Graham for acting as timekeeper. Very special thanks go to Helen Hemery

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Jennifer Keen, State Manager of OzHarvest in WA, came to tell us about how her Food Waste Warriors go about

rescuing wasted food for the needy, as well as helping to reduce the levels of waste in our State and Country.

OzHarvest was started in Australia 16 years ago, and in WA it has been in action since 2014. Annually as a nation

we waste $20 billion worth of food, approximately one third of which comes from our homes. OzHarvest provides a

pipeline between donors and the needy, and also seeks to educate the community about waste reduction. Last

month 106,000 kgs of food were collected in WA and distributed to charities which provide assistance to the needy.

Apart from collecting food from supermarkets, cafes etc., OzHarvest also raises funds to meet it’s minimal operating

costs such as paying drivers of the distribution vans. Most of the input however is provided by volunteers along with

corporate funding for costs such as fuel. The Covid-19 situation has resulted in an increase in demand but also a

reduction in supply, so with the help of Federal funding, OzHarvest has had to buy in some stock. Hampers

containing fresh fruit and vegetables have been introduced, and an app is being developed to connect donors with

charities. Jennifer skilfully included the pupils in her very informative address, and many questions were answered!

virus free, including Africa; District must publicise it’s raison d’etre; Rotaractors are full Rotary Members from 1 July

2020; we should bring the 2 WA Rotary Districts closer together; engage with Members! Involve them in what we do;

let’s lift our game on public image; let’s develop leaders & plan our succession process; support Members through

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Our frequent visitor from Zimbabwe, Rotarian John Travlos, introduced today’s Speaker – Dr Bill Louw, a Linguist and

Philosopher who amongst other things analyses verbal, written and coded texts. Bill is an alumni Rotarian and a Paul

Harris Fellow, and his topic was “Applying ‘Is It The Truth’ (the first tenet of the Rotary Four Way Test) to linguistic

tricks, subtexts and security secret codes”. What a fascinating and mind-boggling talk it was! Algorithms are a set of

rules that are usually used in problem solving calculations, but Bill created the first non-mathematical algorithm and

this enabled him to be involved in the production of the Cobuild Dictionary. This is a body of English language texts

which, through logical positivism, assists philosophers to find the truth using logical proof. Some of the approaches

to truth can be brutal, but Rotary’s quest is to find truth in a non-brutal way. Logical positivism was introduced in the

late 1920s and early 1930s, but by the 1960s it had lost some traction. Bill is working towards its revival. The

Cobuild Corpus consists of several billion words, and this data reveals how words are used, which ones are used

together, and how often they are used. Linguistic tricks, falsities and subtexts can be detected and codes decoded

through linguistics. To find the truth, follow the censorship! Thank you Bill for provoking our thoughts!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Our Schools’ Programme Series meeting was a great success with 84 people attending – including 16 Members,

Rotarian John Travlos, and Honorary Members Jeanette Wood and Leonie Pearse. There were Parents, Teachers and

Psychologists on hand to hear Dr Michele Toner talking about managing ADHD, a topic about which she is clearly

most passionate. ADHD sufferers think differently to most others, but they also are prone to inattention,

hyperactivity, and impulsive bouts. Their brains tend to develop later than the norm, and often they can’t regulate

their emotions. Michele outlined some myths about ADHD such as it being “overdiagnosed” and that it’s caused by

bad parenting! ADHD people can’t be blamed for not doing something because they are inherently inconsistent. Part

of their treatment should include a good healthy diet as well as regular exercise. Michele also listed a number of

useful tips including that teachers should work with parents and vice versa; be compassionate and make them look

good; parents should give the schools relevant information about their child; teachers should let parents know about

assignment deadlines etc.; and we should ease the transition from one scenario to another to allow the sufferer to

make the adjustment. We also heard a little about ADHD WA which supports people with ADHD and their families.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

We had a terrific Zoom meeting last Wednesday morning during which we caught up with past Exchange Student

from Argentina, Jaz Hernando. We also met her lovely family – Dad, Mum, twin Sister, and Brother – all of whom are

in lockdown in Cordoba, the second largest city in Argentina (with almost 1.6 million residents). All three of the

Hernando siblings have been on a Rotary Exchange, Jaz to Australia at the same time as her Sister went to France,

and her Brother to Indonesia the year before. Whilst the household was relatively quiet, Mum and Dad got involved

with five Exchange Students from various parts of the world! However the Covid-19 situation has changed all of that,

and their country has been in strict isolation for over four months. In spite of that Argentina has had 4000 or so

Covid related deaths, and Cordoba recorded 150 new cases on Tuesday alone. Jaz did well in her university

entrance exams, and is now studying Industrial Engineering. She hasn’t physically been to Uni yet, and is studying on

line! Jaz is still her bubbly self, and answered many questions. Her Mum and Dad said thanks for all that was done

for their daughter. Participants today included former Host Parents Mick & Sharan Colliss, two Northam Rotarians,

Christine Storer and Brian Webb, and our Members Don Holywell and Peter Wagner joined us from Broome!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

The two owner/operators of Hear & Spin, Barney Mitcham and Sagit Cohen came along to talk about Vestibular

Rehabilitation. Barney is an Audiometrist and a Physiotherapist, and he and Sagit provide services that deal with

hearing and dizziness problems. We take balance and co-ordination for granted, but dizziness is a common problem.

The interaction between our eyes, our muscles and joints, and our inner ear balance system provides our brain with

information which facilitates balance, and one of the most common causes of dizziness is the movement of crystals

from their correct position in the inner ear to the adjacent fluid canals. However there is a treatment to address this

benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, namely the Epley Manoeuvre which moves the particles in the inner ear back

to their correct location. Ageing inevitably takes its toll, but the adverse effects can be slowed by engaging in

activities as simple as regular walking. People with mild hearing loss are three times more likely to have a fall, and

Barney listed a number of things to minimise dizziness problems: get your hearing checked regularly; use good

quality footwear; take regular exercise; enjoy a healthy diet; reduce stress as much as possible; don’t use cotton

buds; and seek medical advice sooner rather than later. Another most informative session.

I told my melancholy friend 10 jokes to get him to laugh; sadly no pun in ten did.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Our Member Brian Downing combined his expertise in Ecological matters with his dry sense of humour to provide a

most entertaining and informative address about the use of fire as an environmental management tool. After doing

a BSc in South Africa, majoring in Geology and Botany, Brian went on to complete an MSc and a PhD in Ecology, and

so he is very well qualified to deal with the issue. Fire is a natural and important part of earth’s landscape, and this

function goes back millions of years. Initially the earth was covered in forest, but later this changed when about one

third became grassland. It is crucial for grassland to be defoliated otherwise a thatch develops at the top of the

growth, resulting in a fatal waterproof and light-retarding ‘roof’ above the lower growth and roots. Many people think

that it is desirable to exclude fire from nature, but Brian pointed out how counter-productive this can be. Both

Europe and the USA are not good at managing the situation, as they either have no forestry management or else it

includes a ‘no fires’ policy. Nevertheless fire needs to be treated with great respect; a grass fire can generate

temperatures of 1000 degrees C, and when fire vortices occur, they are so powerful that no human intervention is

capable of counteracting the effects. Thank you Brian for a fascinating session!

Max Puddey gave us an update on the Community Shed Project, and it is very exciting! The Town of Cambridge

Council has awarded the construction contract to Candor Contractors Pty Ltd, and site preparation works are

now under way. The Project value is $1.2 million, and construction is expected to be completed by December

2020. Peter Hunt Architect has done the drawings. Upgrades to the existing Recreation Club facility, enhanced

parking, and re-doing the surrounding vegetation etc. are also being planned by Council.

It was good to see Rhonda Walker and Rotarian John Travlos at the meeting; you’re always welcome!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Lucy Lonnqvist, a Year 11 Student at St Mary’s Anglican School for Girls, spoke on the topic ‘Rotary Adventure In

Citizenship’ (RAIC). Lucy was put forward by our Club to participate in RAIC, and although successful, she didn’t go as

it was cancelled due to Covid-19. However Lucy gave us an idea of what would have happened had she gone, and

what a good job she did! Her talk was facilitated by the fact that she has been to Canberra before, and so Lucy

applied her experience to the RAIC agenda. The programme was designed to cover a wealth of items, including

visiting the Press Gallery; meeting with the Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate; visits to the High

Court and the Australian War Memorial; and experiencing Question Time in Parliament, to name but a few! When

Lucy won a national Speech Competition in Canberra last year, she spoke about better ways to measure Australia’s

success; rather than GDP or similar, how about measuring the mental well-being of our citizens? Lucy and a friend

are working on an App which will help people to decide which bin to use for their various types of waste, and once

she has left school, Lucy wants to do a Bachelor of International Relations or similar and to become a diplomat. Lucy

was accompanied by her Mum, Holly Linnqvist. Well done Lucy – your presentation was outstanding.

GENERAL NEWS ITEMS

Our Club has recognised Max Puddey as a Paul Harris Fellow, meaning that we have donated US $1,000 to The

Rotary Foundation in Max’s name. This act of recognition has been done to acknowledge the enormous effort

that Max and his team have put into the soon to be established Community Shed at Lake Monger, and to thank

him for his dedication. Well done Max – a well deserved tribute.

We need more books; pot plants; White Elephant stall items; clean, pre-loved toys; and vintage linen items,

please, for the forthcoming Fete. Much closer to the time we will focus on perishables such as cakes, jams and

so on.

Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go!

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

It was Changeover Night, held at Ambrose Estate at the Wembley Golf Club, and what a night it was! We had four of

our Honorary Members present including Graeme Bain from Denmark, plenty of Wives, Partners, and Guests –

including PDG Graham and Susan Peden, DG Nominee Dee Buckland and Jonathon, our past ADG Yvonne Hart and

our new ADG Jane O’Leary, District Secretary Dave and Marieke Taylor, and the Federal Member for Curtin, Celia

Hammond MP and Simon. Seventeen of our current 21 Members attended, and all in all there were just under 50

people present! Proceedings started with a Toast to Rotary International proposed by Roger Veary, and PDG Graham

responded on behalf of Rotary. Pres. Peter summarised the second of his two years at the helm, and this last 6

months in particular has been very difficult due to the Covid-19 restrictions. However he and Leonie have guided the

Club admirably, and we are very grateful to them both. After a delicious main course Pres. Peter handed over the

reigns to incoming President Jeremy Wood who stated his intention to keep the good things the same, but also to

‘nudge’ the Club towards some modern approaches. After Pres. Jeremy had introduced the Board for 2020/21, PP

Peter and PDG Ross Ledger recognised Max Puddey as a Paul Harris Fellow (see below).

GENERAL NEWS ITEMS

Mark Hemery is on twelve months leave of absence with immediate effect.

The collection of items for the forthcoming Fete continues apace, and PDG Ross Ledger has secured a good

supply of books. We need to pursue more books; pot plants; White Elephant stall items; clean, pre-loved toys; and

vintage linen items. Much closer to the time we will focus on perishables such as cakes, jams and so on.

Last Saturday’s Foodbank Drive Thru collection at Perry Lakes went extremely well given the short notice that we

had to organise it, and it yielded 1,604 kgs of food items! We received lots of help from a variety of quarters such

as the Wembley Junior Cricket Club, and our Federal Member for Curtin, Celia Hammond, also gave up two hours

or so of her time to help out.

We need a new dipstick for our car; the old one won’t reach the oil.

NEWS FROM OUR LAST MEETING

Our most recent meeting was a Club Forum at the Cambridge Bowling Club, presided over by President Peter for the

last time during his current tenure. After a few announcements (see below), incoming President Jeremy led a

discussion regarding the future modus operandi of our Club. We started with a short video by incoming District

Governor Jon Bilson, who outlined the fact that although we’ve had 100 years of Rotary in Australia, we need to

shape the future to attract members who can effectively serve the community. Rotaractors will be Rotary members

from now on, and various alternative membership forms will be explored. The District Conference will be held in

conjunction with District 9465 in March 2021.

Our Members then discussed what’s good and not so good about our Club, and Brian Downing came up with some

useful criteria to measure success. Max Puddey explored the possible links between us, our Community Shed and

the youth of our area, and we also examined what our membership and meeting formats will look like in the future.

Although we will do some Zoom meetings, most will be face-to-face. We value our interaction with each other and

with our community, including other Rotary Clubs that surround us. Thanks for a robust discussion!

Leonie Pearse is after longish lemon tree branches to decorate

our Changeover Night tables. Please let Leonie know if you can

help. Thank you.
