Man: Shall I get some fruit for the picnic?

Woman: Yes, can you get some oranges and bananas?

Man: Im not very keen on oranges. How about grapesinstead?

Woman: Theyre so expensive at the moment. Just get thebananas.

    R: Now listen again.

    repeat

R: That is the end of Part Three.

You now have a minute to check your answers. We will tell you when Part Four begins.

    pause

R: Now turn to Part Four, questions 20-25.

Look at the six statements for this Part. You willhear a conversation between a female student,Kate, and a male student, George. They arehaving lunch in the college canteen. Decide if you think each statement is correct or incorrect. If you think it is correct, put a tick in the box underA for YES. If you think it is not correct, put a tickin the box under B for NO. At the end therecording is repeated.

pause R: Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully ...

Kate: I dont remember much of that lecture. The doctorgave me this medicine for my cough but I dontlike it - it seems to make me awfully sleepy and Icant follow my lectures.

George: Well, if you dont take it, none of us will be ableto follow our lectures, all well hear is youcoughing!

Kate: Oh dear, do you think Ill annoy everybody?

George: Yes. You could study at home for a couple of days- you know, have some time off until it gets better.

Kate: (shocked) Oh I couldnt do that! Id miss toomuch and I get really uncomfortable when I havea lot of catching up to do. Last year I missed awhole week when I fell off my bike and had thatenormous bandage on my hand. It took me agesto do all the work when I came back.

George: Oh you worry too much. You can work at home. Just get Mr Gray to tell you which parts of the

course book well be covering and read it yourself at home. All he does is go through the bookanyway. You might as well do it yourself.

Kate: Oh, thats a bit unfair! I think Mr Grays reallynice. Hes always willing to stay behind after classif you dont understand something.

George: Being really nice and never in a hurry doesntmake him a good lecturer. Anyway I think youshould look after your health first and ours! If wesit in that small, hot room with you for the nextthree days well all have your cough by the endof it.

Kate: Mmm perhaps youre right. I dont care aboutmyself but I wouldnt like other people to blame

me for their illnesses. I have got a bit of atemperature now too - so maybe Ill go and seeMr Gray after lunch and tell him I wont be at thisafternoons lecture.

George: Or the next two ... come on, youve got to getbetter.

    Kate: I suppose youre right.

George: Then we can all go out as we planned at theweekend.

Kate: OK then, I dont want to miss that ... and I do feelill ... (fade)

    pause

    R: Now listen again.

    repeat

R: That is the end of Part Four. You now have twelveminutes to check and transfer your answers to theanswer sheet.

    pause

R: That is the end of the test.

Good attempt at task, addressingall three content elements, withsome elaboration. There may beoccasional lack of clarity, minorrepetition or digression. Overallthe script is reasonably wellorganised and requires only alittle effort by the reader.

Adequate attempt to cover task.May be a rather simple accountwith little elaboration, or a fullerattempt containing somerepetition or digression. Onecontent element may have beenomitted and/or the script may beslightly short. Adequatelyorganised, although some effortmay be required by the reader.

Inadequate attempt at task, possibly with somemisunderstanding. Two contentelements may have beenomitted. It may be too short orthere will be noticeableirrelevance or lack of organisation, which will requireconsiderable effort by the reader.

Poor attempt at task, becausehas little relevance, is noticeablytoo short or very disorganised.

    Candidate has misunderstood or

misinterpreted task. Contentbears no relation to task.

Fairly good control of languageand linking of sentences. Eitherlanguage is ambitious, i.e.showing evidence of range of structures and vocabulary, witha few errors, generally non-impeding, or the language isunambitious, but virtually error-free.

Some control of language.Linking of sentences not alwaysmaintained. Simple sentencestructure generally sound.Language likely to beunambitious, or if ambitiousprobably flawed. A number of errors are likely to be present,e.g. in structures, tenses, spelling, articles, prepositions, but they are mostly non-impeding.

Erratic control of sentencestructure and use of tenses, e.g.past simple not usedappropriately in many cases.Language may be verysimplistic/limited/repetitive.Errors in the spelling of PETvocabulary often occur.Language errors are numerous, and will sometimes impedecommunication. Punctuationmay be noticeably absent, leading to incoherence of sentences.

Very poor control of language.Difficult to understand due toe.g. frequent grammatical errors, errors in the spelling of PET levelwords, or poor sentenceconstruction. There may be ageneral absence of punctuation, leading to serious incoherence.

Achieves nothing, languageimpossible to understand, ortotally irrelevant to task.
