Camp  Harbor  Workshop  Program

Camp Harbor is pleased to offer an exciting Workshop Program to those campers who want to keep their academic momentum going, receive an extra boost to improve skills, or that extra challenge to move ahead. Harbor offers its workshop program as a supplement to the Camp Harbor program or as a program on its own. This is an exciting option for boys and girls interested in concentrating on or developing a particular skill or interest that they might not be able to pursue during the regular school year. Workshops participants may elect to join the camp program upon completion of their classes or return home. Students enrolled in Camp Harbor will be taken to their workshops at the appropriate time and will return to their camp group at the end of class. The workshop classes, in combination with the Camp Harbor program, are optional and available at an additional charge. Please note that only students enrolled in the five-day camp program may participate in the workshop program. All workshops meet daily, Monday through Friday, for one hour. Some workshops require a two-week commitment. Campers may enroll in as many workshops as they would like, as long as there is no scheduling conflict. A mid morning snack is provided to all morning workshop participants. Please note that there are no make-up days and that a course that is under-enrolled may be cancelled. Schedule Changes: Should a student wish to make a change in his/her workshop schedule after May 2, space must be available in the desired workshop for the change to occur. No refunds for schedule changes or missed workshops will be given after May 27, 2016. Enrollment Fee: All Harbor Country Day School Summer Programs require that a $50 registration fee accompany each camper’s/student’s enrollment agreement. This amount is a processing charge and is non-refundable. In addition, there is a $25 per week deposit for each week that you register

Students in the Academic Workshops may strengthen and develop their language arts (reading/writing), and math skills in morning classes. Because classes are small (maximum of 6 in the younger groups), there is time for a high degree of interaction between teacher and student, and individual needs can be given even more attention than during the regular school year. The atmosphere is relaxed, and emphasis is on making the learning experience enjoyable. These classes are structured in two-week sessions: the weeks of 7/05 and 7/11, 7/18 and 7/25, 8/01 and 8/08. However, varied activities allow students to attend for any number of weeks without concern for sequence. Upon receipt of the enrollment agreement, parents requesting academic classes will be sent an Academic Questionnaire in the mail.. An information sheet will be sent home by the teachers each Friday to keep parents informed. Academic courses being offered: Language Arts, Mathematics, and Kindergarten Readiness. Language Arts Grades 1-6 Time: 9:10 Available 7/5 & 7/11, 7/18 & 7/25, 8/1 & 8/8 Students focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, phonics and writing skills. Camp Harbor is proud to announce its partnership with our friends at Active Learning for the 2016 camp season! Active Learning Services’ video game creation camps offer programs that use our custom designed curriculum that provide campers to use their creativity as they learn to program a video game using step-by-step instructions while learning about the history of game design, design concepts, game styles and more! There are no prerequisites. All video creation programs, with the exception of our full day 3d Concepts, are half-day programs that can be combined with an additional Active Learning Services offering to make a full day camp. Chess Camp Grades 1-8 Half day AM or PM, Full day Available 6/27 & 8/1 Introductory to Advanced: New for 2016! USA Chess is the largest and premier chess camp organizer for children in the United States. Their staff is comprised of the finest children’s chess instructors in North America. Tuition includes trophy, chess set and much more. Video Game Creation- Arcade Style Grade 3-8 Half day AM or PM, Full day Available 6/27 Introductory to Intermediate: New for 2016! The Arcade course is a program where the game that is created has action for each level all on one screen similar to Centipede, Asteroids, or Pac Man. The main character (which the children create) can be anything. Other characters (enemies) pursue the main character from off the screen or move about the screen. The character dodges the attacks of the enemies while scoring points for picking up objects and destroying the enemy objects. Options are endless and children create level after level for a full week of fun. This is a half-day program. Students can add an additional program to make it a full day camp. Minecraft, Network, and Hosting with Minecraft Grades 3-8 Half day AM or PM, Full day Available 6/27 Introductory to Intermediate: New for 2016! Minecraft is hugely popular because it’s collaborative, open-ended and moddable. Our program preserves those qualities and adds a large dose of fun! The week begins with learning the game, controls, recipes and a bit about hosting & networking. Next campers are connecting to different worlds hosted on our secure server and experimenting with character skins, mods and custom maps. By day three the kids are building in the Active Learning World that grows over time. Whether adding a room, building a moat or even creating a chessboard the possibilities are nearly limitless.

Kudo Video Game Creation – Like Mario Go Kart Grades 2-8 Half day AM or PM, Full day Available 6/27 Introductory to Intermediate: New for 2016! Children will create something similar to a Mario Go-Kart style game. What fun! Campers begin by designing their own world. Worlds can have mountains, valleys, lakes, hills, etc. or they can be a design unlike anything you have ever seen before. It's totally up to them! Next they place characters into the world and program them to move about, interacting with other characters, even talking using scripts written for the characters. They can program characters to pick up objects, engage opponents, and overcome villains. Children will use their creativity as they build a world full of racing tasks. Whether it is collecting enough diamonds before time expires, navigating through the challenging obstacle course, or racing against a friend they are sure to have fun! Video Game Creation- Platform Style Grades 3-8 Half day AM or PM, Full day Available 8/1 Introductory to Intermediate: New for 2016! In this camp children build a game described as a "platform" game like Sonic or Mario. Children have a blast as their characters do the impossible, overcome obstacles and opponents and then conquer the Big Boss. The character progresses on a long path (like a journey) with the background scrolling behind it and adversaries, prizes, obstacles, are encountered as it goes. Lessons on the basics will be similar to the Arcade course in the very beginning, but the class diverges and different programming techniques are taught in order to build this Platform game. Kudo Video Game Creation Adventure Style Grades 2-8 Half day AM or PM, Full day Available 8/1 Introductory to Intermediate: New for 2016! Children will have the option of learning how to program using a Microsoft Xbox controller! Students will create their own cool custom world and navigate through it. Within this world they will create tasks that need to be completed in order to progress to the next level. Some of those tasks include escaping a sewer maze, survival mode, outwitting rivals, creating decoys and collecting bonus items all while having fun! This is a half-day camp. Xbox controller is optional and supplied by the student.
