I have enjoyed (at times) watching the candidates for Pres- ident as they battle it out this year. With the Democratic Na- tional Convention in Denver this summer, it has been fun keeping up with all of the political battles tak- ing place. I have had some interesting discussions with people about their choices and the reasons they support their candidate. Some peo- ple are choosing their leader because he is a charismatic speaker or promises hope for the future, others are supporting their leader be- cause of her experience and background, and still others support their leader because he has served his time and he is a decorated supporter of our country. A good friend of mine made the comment that “he doesn’t need to like his President.” It is an interesting comment. Do we choose our leaders because we like them and relate with them, or because we support their views, or because we are confident in their leadership? We have to be careful about those we choose to follow. There are many accomplished leaders out there who have had severe impacts on history. Hitler was an accomplished leader, Osama bin Ladin was an accomplished leader. Both of them were able to build strong fol- lowers of their mission and had negative impacts on the world. We choose leaders throughout our lives. Whether it is the group of friends we are going to hang out with, the coach we are going to play for, or the person we are going to work with. These leaders can have positive or negative impacts on our lives and the lives of those special to us. Why do you choose the leaders you follow? Do they support your values and morals? Do they have integrity? Are they leading you in a direction you want to go? Are you a leader for others? Are you lead- ing with integrity and strong moral values? We will all choose many more leaders in our lifetime. Make sure you are choosing your lead- ers for the right reason. – Jeff Cheley CAMP OPENING ISSUE ... 2008 Who Are YOUR Leaders? IN THIS ISSUE... I have enjoyed (at times)watching the candidates for Pres-ident as they battle it out thisyear. With the Democratic Na-tional Convention in Denver this

summer, it has been fun keeping up with all of the political battles tak-ing place. I have had some interesting discussions with people abouttheir choices and the reasons they support their candidate. Some peo-ple are choosing their leader because he is a charismatic speaker orpromises hope for the future, others are supporting their leader be-cause of her experience and background, and still others support theirleader because he has served his time and he is a decorated supporterof our country. A good friend of mine made the comment that “hedoesn’t need to like his President.” It is an interesting comment. Dowe choose our leaders because we like them and relate with them, orbecause we support their views, or because we are confident in theirleadership?

We have to be careful about those we choose to follow. There aremany accomplished leaders out there who have had severe impactson history. Hitler was an accomplished leader, Osama bin Ladin wasan accomplished leader. Both of them were able to build strong fol-lowers of their mission and had negative impacts on the world.

We choose leaders throughout our lives. Whether it is the groupof friends we are going to hang out with, the coach we are going toplay for, or the person we are going to work with. These leaders canhave positive or negative impacts on our lives and the lives of thosespecial to us.

Why do you choose the leaders you follow? Do they support yourvalues and morals? Do they have integrity? Are they leading you ina direction you want to go? Are you a leader for others? Are you lead-ing with integrity and strong moral values? We will all choose manymore leaders in our lifetime. Make sure you are choosing your lead-ers for the right reason.

From a Camper ...

Everyone will have a triumph.Everyone will take part in an adventure.Everyone will experience a breathtaking

moment.

But you can’t stumble upon a triumph. You can’t come by an adventure. And a breathtaking moment is hard to

see by accident.

So choose a path that leads to triumph.Step up to an adventure.Plot a course to a breathtaking moment.

And you will be rewarded.

Brendan French from PA –What doyou miss the most about camp duringthe winter? What don’t I miss? I missthe smell of the dirt after it rains. I misslistening to the Ski Hi boys playing bas-ketball out my window. I miss unit songsunder the stars. I miss the interactionwith so many wonderful people. I misswatching the growth that takes place witheach camper and staff member throughthe summer. I feel so grateful that I haveit to look forward to each year.

Sarah Duncan fromTX - Have youever tried telemark skiing or that thingwith the super short skis that are like 2feet long? I started telemark skiing in1996 when I became interested in back-country skiing, it was before it had gottenbig. I remember it being so fun to have anew challenge. One day I came to the of-fice with a sunburned stripe on my cheekbecause I had forgotten my sunscreenand used chapstick for sun protection. Imissed a couple of spots and had a funnylooking burn on my face. BoWinslowmade fun of me all day. I have also triedthe short skis once and it was just OK

The McCall Family from PA - Can youstill land a double lutz? No, I am afraidnot. I wish I still could. When I quit iceskating, I quit cold turkey. I wish I wouldhave kept skating but my efforts weremore focused on skiing and dancing. Iwould like to play hockey but you don’tsee many mothers of two missing theirfront teeth. Someday when my kids areolder I will see if I can do it.

Eleanor Hooper from OR - I have aneight year old cousin who is a figureskater. She is nervous about going toCheley because she is afraid she will gettoo behind in her skating! As a formerfigure skater, what would you say to mycousin Lindsey to convince her to cometo Cheley? I am grateful to have confi-dence and experience with different activ-ities. Despite what my skating and dancecoaches wanted, I feel time at campmade me more well rounded. As anadult, I realize how lucky I am to have hadmany different and varied experiencesrather than specializing in one area. Mycoach in 8th grade was worried I wouldreturn home from camp out of shape.Actually, I was in better shape and morefocused. Taking a break from your spe-cialized sport is so healthy.

Arianna Pattek from FL - How didyou perfect your awesome Michael Jack-son dancing? Thank you for the compli-

ment but I am still working to perfect it.Watching MTV in the 80s (when all theyshowed was clean music videos), danc-ing at Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs, and dancing at weddings. Now I keepmy skills sharp dancing every year atcamp, even when I am 6 months preg-nant.

Brian Fauver from CO - How did youmake the decision to move to New Or-leans? Are you involved with the rebuild-ing there at all?My husband works forEnterprise Rent-a-Car and he was pro-moted to a position in New Orleans. Wemoved here from North Carolina almosttwo years ago. He is responsible forworking to improve the company inSouthern Louisiana.

I am the type of person that alwaysfeels I could be doing more. We havehelped rebuild some houses and play-grounds. But more than that, we had thefaith to move our family here for awhile ayear after Katrina while many peoplewere moving away. We feel good that weare doing our part to contribute to thecommunity by providing good jobsthrough Kurt’s company, spreading theword to people to send their children toCheley and welcoming and hosting manyfirst-time visitors to the city. It has takenawhile to adjust to life here but it is a fan-tastic city.

Spencer Mayer from CA - Is it fun tolive in New Orleans? Do you miss theRocky Mountains? We have loved livingin New Orleans. I love the diversity, thefood, the culture and the weather (espe-cially since I go to Colorado for the hotsummers). I am afraid that when wemove Ellie will wonder why there are notso many parades. I do miss the moun-tains, my family and friends, skiing, andHeidi the dog.

Autumn Dern from CO - What is thecutest thing Kate has done? By the waygreat name choice! Of course I am hermother so I think everything she does iscute. The way she looks into your eyes, her little noises and her hiccups. Ellie willwalk by and kiss Kate’s forehead, which Ilove to see. I am glad you like the name.

Emilie and Aymeric Foyer fromFrance - Does Brooke have a dog? and ifso is it a golden retriever like Heidi? Idon’t have a dog at this time but wouldlike to have one sometime. We will prob-ably wait until we move to Colorado. Fornow, Heidi gets all of my dog attention.

WEDDING BELLS FUTURE CAMPERS

Thanks to Louis Ott, Laird Campbell and Richard Kane for sending in storiesabout their time at camp. Richard writes, “In 1927, we climbed twin sisters on a coolto cold day. The ranger gave me a cup of hot tea. I still remember how good ittasted. It was a pretty good hike for a 9 year old camper.”

A few alumni recognized people in the History Snippet. Mark Melton sent backthe picture with seven campers and staff labeled. Louis Ott wrote back and recog-nized over 10 people in the picture. He also reminded us “my brother, Sonny, was‘Top Hand’ that year and was awarded a little red Cocker Spaniel puppy and wenamed her ‘Colorado Copper Penny’ and she gave us two beautiful litters of red andblonde puppies over the 12 years.” (I am sure there are some parents out there thatare glad we don’t continue that tradition.) It was Louis’s first year atTrail’s End when

BTE was actually located on theGTE property before they moved.

Laird Campbell also recog-nized a few people, including him-self, in the picture.

And Laird, you should knowthat both Louis and Mark Meltonrecognized you in the History Snip-pet photo.

SNIPPET

Those who have visited theCheley Museum in the Power-

house have seen the barber chairwhich was used for years to as-sure that (boy) campers were

"well-groomed" and looked goodfor camp life.

The barber came out fromtown every Sunday, and boys

signed up for their appointments(or were signed up by their unit

director!), especially at theend of the term for the

return trip home.Customs and times havechanged over the years,

haven't they?

A close friend of ours,Ann McCollum(past camper, staff person and currenttrainer during staff training), has con-tacted us regarding the Gear4Good pro-gram sponsored byThe Mountain Fund.Gear4Good re-directs (recycles) the do-nations of outdoor gear and clothing tooutdoor programs for at-risk or needykids in the US and to other non-govern-ment outdoor programs around theworld.

So far the recipients have includedCity Kids toWilderness Project (Washing-ton, DC) and Four Corners School of Out-door (Utah) in the US and Climb HighFoundation (Uganda) and the MountainPorter Support Program (Nepal). These

programs can use packs, sleeping bags, boots, outerwear and other outdoorequipment.

We will have boxes available onopening day for our camp families to do-nate their items. Give your old outdooritems (that hot pink ski jacket from the80s or those hiking boots/running shoesthat no longer fit) a chance to live alonger life helping someone that can stillbenefit from them.

You can check out www.Gear4Goodfor more info on the program. You canalso send clothing to Cheley Camps ifyou will not be here this summer, and wewill pass it along to Ann.

In preparation to join our communityplease remember the following regard-ing electronics and other technology.Camp is a great place to connect withfriends, enjoy the outdoors and unplugfor a while. With this in mind, we are let-ting you know that rechargeable electron-ics are not permitted. If you bring adigital camera, keep in mind that it isvery difficult to recharge it and you won’tbe able to download the photos until youreturn home.

Camp is a great place to take photosand less expensive cameras work great, especially with our activities. Plus, thephotographers will be taking picturesthat will be uploaded to the Internet daily.

MAKING THE TRANSITION

Camp is a great place to be yourselffor a while. We realize that campers areused to being on the go, multi-taskingand being over stimulated with technol-ogy throughout the day. We strive tomake camp a peaceful place, with plentyof new activities to challenge your brainand your body.

To make your transition to camp

smooth, here are a few tips and tricks tokeep in mind: Bring pre-stamped, ad-dressed envelopes so you can pop lettersin the mail. Bring a few photos fromhome to decorate your bed. Help packyour bags so you know what youbrought, what it is for and how to use it. Leave valuables or special/one-of-a-kind items at home.

We want to make camp a comfort-able environment so you can focus ontrying new things, making new friendsand challenging yourself every day. Please let us know how we can help getyou ready for your summer with us.
