Overview of PCA Colorado Our Vision A Colorado where our children thrive, our communities prosper, and all residents take action to ensure the well-being of our children.

Our Mission We educate, connect, and mobilize Colorado communities and families so our children can grow and develop free from abuse and neglect.

Since 2009, Prevent Child Abuse (PCA) Colorado has developed a statewide public awareness campaign, Pinwheels for Prevention™; provided information and assistance to communities and professionals on effective child abuse prevention strategies; and educated government officials on the issues facing Colorado families.

Overview of the Pinwheel Campaign

National Campaign “Pinwheels for Prevention™” is a national public awareness campaign that puts a new ‘spin’ on prevention. The positive campaign allows pinwheels to highlight efforts and change the way we think about prevention. Focusing on community activities and public policies that prioritize prevention is the goal, right from the start. Laying the foundation for children’s healthy growth will make sure child abuse and neglect never occur in the first place. By highlighting children as the building blocks for our communities and economic development, we ensure their healthy development.

Colorado Campaign PCA Colorado launched its state campaign in 2010, displaying 5,000 pinwheels in its first year. Since 2010 the Pinwheels for Prevention™ campaign has grown rapidly, with the number of pinwheels doubling every year as more and more counties and communities take part. The campaign consists of a partnership between PCA Colorado and local community partners through pinwheel activities, public service announcements, social media outreach, and educational materials.

How to Get Involved As a business I can… As a school I can….

As an Individual I can… As a local organization I can...

Plant pinwheel gardens and/or post pinwheel signs at courthouses, city halls, libraries, airports, malls, fairs, stadiums, schools, community centers, parks, along major throughways, and in planter boxes.

Create pinwheel bouquets with message tags to sell or give away

Create pinwheel bulletin boards with positive messages

Integrate pinwheels with other events including at the start/finish lines for runs/walks, board meetings, orientations, sporting events, conferences, and Easter egg hunts

To spread the messages, get others to purchase pinwheels and get donated advertising space and money seek: local media partnerships (print, broadcast, online), campaign spokespeople (radio hosts, athletes, coaches, civic and business leaders), media relations (press material, letters to the editor)

Engage elected officials and business leaders to educate, promote and become pinwheels ambassadors to our message

Seek opportunities to engage people on the issues through the Pinwheels Campaign including: schools, colleges and universities, city departments, religious institutions, non-profits, military bases, medical groups, local businesses

Raise funds to support child abuse prevention by selling pinwheels or other pinwheel items at your establishment; putting out donation cans; hosting a bake sale, and/or hold a pinwheel lunch-n-learn at your workplace

Recruit other volunteers to help with any of the above ideas and more

Slogans and Messages

Why posit ive messaging: Research shows that while horrific stories of child abuse and neglect may gain short-‐term media attention, this approach is not successful in building lasting public will for effective prevention efforts. To promote lasting change, the pinwheel messages must focus on proposing effective solutions and engaging people in positive, preventative action they can take on their own.

Here are a few guidelines for you to consider as you develop your

Pinwheels Campaign messages: Avoid numbers Talk about importance of healthy child development

Focus on success stories Focus on community

Give specific actions others (individuals, business, etc.) can do to get involved

Shared Fundraising Model

PCA Colorado is committed to partnering with local organizations to sustain and grow available

resources for parents. We encourage partners to use the pinwheels to raise money for family

support services. We try to keep the cost of the pinwheels as low as possible so that community-

based organizations can sell the materials and recognize a gain from their sales. PCA Colorado

will happily share fundraising ideas and materials used by other organizations across the state.

How to Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect

Develop Strong Families Extensive research supports the common-sense notion that when the Five Protective Factors (see below) are present and robust in a family, the likelihood of child abuse and neglect diminishes. (Find the research at www.strengtheningfamilies.net)

Parental  resilience  • The  ability  to  cope  and  bounce  back  from  all  types  of  challenges

Social  connec.ons  • Friends,  family  members,  neighbors,  and  other  members  of  a  community  who  provide  emo<onal  support  and  concrete  assistance  to  parents

Knowledge  of  paren.ng  and  child  development  • Accurate  informa<on  about  raising  young  children  and  appropriate  expecta<ons  for  their  behavior

Concrete  support  in  .mes  of  need  • Financial  security  to  cover  day-‐to-‐day  expenses  and  unexpected  costs  that  come  up  from  <me  to  <me,  access  to  formal  supports  like  TANF  and  Medicaid,  and  informal  support  from  social  networks

Children’s  social  and  emo.onal  competence  • A  child’s  ability  to  interact  posi<vely  with  others  and  communicate  his  or  her  emo<ons  effec<vely
