CAMPHILL COMMUNITY

Annual Report2012-2013

Dear Friends: The Triform Four “P’s”: People, Programs, Places and Plans — are always in a state of progressive change, but accompanied with a calm and determined sense of mission. Last year was no different and in stepping back to review the events that defined each of the four elements, we are struck by how much was accomplished in such a short time. Starting with the most important of the P’s, the growth in our people was notable in so many ways. The number of new students in both the day and residential program of Triform continues to bring new energy and challenges. We have seen the departure of several long term apprentices and journeymen, while welcoming a wide variety of students and their families to experience the community for the first time. As the capacity and size of Triform has grown in recent years, we have recognized the increasing importance of outreach and communication in the admissions process: from initial contact, to needs assessment, trial visit and, finally, student acceptance and orientation, the challenges of an expanding community have focused our attention on improving the dynamic interplay between form and freedom — and enhancing the experience for everyone. To meet this challenge in enrollment and diversity of need, we have expanded our efforts to inform, recruit and welcome

new co-workers at various times during the year. As in past years, their backgrounds, nationality

and talents are widely diverse and they all bring a desire to give service and develop relationships that help grow our community in subtle, but tangible ways. This past year, we also welcomed a new family as householders and they, too, have brought their life vitalities and energy to the daily experience that is Triform. As with any dynamic community, growth brings challenges in self-governance and this fall, Triform embarked on a new organizational structure that will guide its management and direction in the years to come.

After eight years as Triform’s president, Tim Paholak has decided to step back and take up other tasks as an elder in the community. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that Triform’s mission of youth guidance was advanced each year and his dedication and wisdom will always be recognized as among the most impactful of Triform leaders in its history. His continued presence and guidance at Triform is reassuring to us all. Keith Bogdanovich will be handing off much of his day-to-day responsibilities in office management, finance and

infrastructure maintenance to others, but will continue his valued role as a house parent and take on additional project responsibilities as needed. Keith has been a valued member of Triform’s leadership over the past six years and has contributed much to its growth and development in that time — the community is deeply grateful. with all aspects of Triform’s outreach, including co-worker admissions, development and fundraising, website and social media, and human resources. Ben Davis will assume operations oversight, including buildings and land maintenance, vehicle and communication support, and chair the finance committee. Akiko Suesada will lead programs, including youth guidance, coursework, therapy, student admissions and home life. And finally, the fourth member of the leadership group will be Rebecca Bissonnette, taking on the important tasks of regulatory compliance, the Day Hab program, and leading the internal governance body of Triform, the Regulus group. Triform is fortunate to have such talented individuals ready to lead these important areas of community life. Program highlights for the last year included: a new collaboration with Camphill Hudson (known as Solaris) for an opportunity to send Journeymen/ women and senior apprentices to experience the day program in Hudson; a two week program with a Danish school group of 15 students, who lived at Triform and worked in the garden and on estate projects such as constructing a new fence; a number of wonderful play productions including the Nutcracker and the Magic Flute; and a number of performances by the Triform Bell Choir, including a collaboration with the exquisite talents of Paula Robison, Fredric Hand and Adele Wilson at the annual Spring Concert. In the realm of Place, Triform continues to grow in size and beauty. Last October, we opened Halcyon House and marveled at the ecologically sensitive and ingenious design and construction. The construction of Halcyon, the third house at the Stewardship, helped to create a real neighborhood. To further connect the original Triform property with the Stewardship and promote healthy exercise, a new path between the properties was built through beautiful woods and fields. And to cap the year’s building activities, a new solar panel farm was installed next to the Phoenix Center, which will provide enough electricity to power all of Triform’s future needs. Coupled with the biodynamic farming initiatives of the past few years, Triform is now a model community of sustainability and ecological sensitivity. As for the final “P”, the Plans, the community and board of trustees are reviewing the current strategic plan and will soon develop an accompanying comprehensive master plan to determine program and building priorities over the next five years. Projects such as replacing an aging barn complex; demolishing and replacing a deteriorating Rowan house; accommodating new therapies and programs that

support the mission of serving Youth Guidance; and supporting healthy and sustainable growth for the community in the longer term are among many initiatives that will be considered in this process. More will be communicated about these plans in the year ahead. As we celebrate yet another year of achievement by the entire community of Triform, we are inspired to do more — inspired by the striving of our students and co-workers as they live, work and play in a place that is unique by any measurement or standard. That special quality can be found in the amazing energy of the weavers; the peaceful setting of their work; the quiet rhythm of the milking room at dawn or the serene fields in summer; the laughter of children playing at dusk or the joyful sound of the bell choir in full song — it is all there in the wonderful contrasts of Triform. None of the four “P’s” is possible without the support of our donors and friends of Triform. We take this opportunity to thank you for your time, dedication and generosity that is given so freely and means so much to all of us. You are indeed the fifth “P” — valued Partner. Thank you from all of us at Triform.

Outreach and Events3

Triform has arranged Spring Concerts for more than ten years. In former times we had the good fortune to have the assistance of parent contact, Clem D’Alessio, a music producer who could bring professional musicians to Triform to perform in conjunction with our Bell Choir. In recent years the scope of the Concert grew as the new space of the Phoenix Center enabled Triform to have a larger audience but it was especially challenging to bring the kind of musicians we knew would “click” with our community and with the space. Anne Bailey who is the chair of the Development Committee for the Triform Board put her creative genius to work: she picks up the story… “I knew that Paula Robison had a history of support for Camphill communities and decided to start a dialogue with her around the idea of a fundraising concert at Triform. We were able to find a mutually workable date and the rest fell into place. She thought it would be wonderful to include the highly talented guitarist, Frederic Hand, which really added another dimension to the music. When you add in the Triform Bell Choir, under the direction of Akiko Suesada, and Adele Wilson, an outstanding soprano, we had the perfect mix of talent for this very important fundraiser. I am so grateful to all of the musicians for the success of concert entitled Amazing Grace. The beautiful music was Paula’s choice with the last piece being the old folk ballad Amazing Grace. Paula’s generosity and gracious spirit made the concert shine and the Triform Bell choir responded by playing one of their best concerts ever. The look on all their faces was one of tremendous pride and accomplishment when they finished. It brought tears to many a concert goers eyes that afternoon. Paula and Fred’s interactions with the Bell Choir were absolutely endearing and uplifting for the entire audience. It continues to prove that when we work together amazing things can happen! Jim and I are deeply grateful to the Triform community for the opportunities that have been given to our son, Jamie.

Under the gentle instruction of Akiko Suesada, he has been able to participate as a bell ringer in the Triform Bell Choir for over 5 years. This is not something we ever thought he would be able to do. Because of his participation in the choir he has gained composure and confidence and has learned to work as a team with his fellow musicians. Our family is always deeply touched when we see him play. The concert with Paula Robison and Frederic Hand was no exception. We could all see how focused and proud he was as he played with his friends in the concert. This is truly what Triform does best, encourage participation and open doors to the seemingly impossible. Our sponsors and families who bought tickets for the concert were very important to the financial success of the concert. Because so many came together in support of Triform, we were able to raise over $40,000! Personally, I owe a great deal of thanks to everyone who helped make the concert the success that it was. Without each and everyone who contributed that day, the concert could not have been the success that it was.” The night before the concert on Saturday, May 4, Triform held its second annual Benefit Silent Auction and wine reception to raise funds for student scholarships. The silent auction and wine reception was held at Art Omi International in Ghent, NY. Art Omi graciously donated this unique venue for Triform’s special fundraising event. Sponsoring the wine reception was the Hudson-Chatham Winery. Harvest Spirits offered a tasting of their vodka and brandy.

Outreach and Events

Have you ever considered sponsoring a special event to benefit Triform? If so, we suggest you contact dedicated parent and fundraiser, Sophy Haynes for advice. This past year, Sophy and Triform friend, Jean Fitzsimmons, found a way to engage their friends and share a bit of the energy and artistry that is Triform by hosting the 2nd Annual Arts and Crafts Show in Southampton, NY. Sophy’s decided to put her efforts into an art show for Triform after a Southampton gallery showing of her son and Triform resident, Robbie Haynes’ art work generated a lot of interest. According to Sophy, “35 of Robbie’s paintings were on display and 32 of them sold”. Sophy realized she could host another art show and showcase many of the fine artists who call Triform home. Friends, family and community members were all welcomed into this year’s art show. Sophy’s fundraising efforts have not only helped Triform raise money for much needed projects, but has helped to spread the word about the life-changing work Triform is doing, and the amazing talents of its residents. Sophy is one of Triform’s most successful individual fundraisers, an amazing powerhouse and generous supporter. A big thank you to Sophy, Jean and their friends for the ongoing involvement and dedicated work! To learn more about hosting an event for Triform, please contact [email protected].

Camphill Hudson and Triform came together this spring to work, collaborate and play together at Solaris, the Center for The Social Art. Solaris, located in the heart of Hudson, is the first urban Camphill initiative in North America and has made great strides in establishing relationships with people from all different walks of life. It was a great pleasure to welcome Triform students, apprentices and Journeymen to join us in our mission to reach out, serve and integrate with the wider community. One example is the Community Dinners. Camphill Hudson began hosting Community Dinners in October 2012, and often serve between 50 and 70 people weekly. Dinners are cooked and served by members and volunteers of Camphill Hudson and Triform Camphill. The meals often include fresh bio-dynamic produce from Triform’s gardens. Our own program is filled with cooking lunch, yoga, drama, education, cooking for the Salvation Army, delivering Meals-on- Wheels, arts and crafts and working in the Camphill gift shop. The visiting students from Triform have brought a vitality and youthful presence to the center. In turn, our older friends in Hudson help to guide the Triform students with their many years of experience living in Camphill Hudson. Given the proximity of Triform’s beautiful rural setting to Solaris, it would be wonderful for this relationship to continue to grow, providing more experiences and opportunity for all! Every summer Triform adapts the regular schedule to create activities more suited for the weather and mood of the season. This year resident teacher Aroon Kalsi found inspiration in the natural world as well. Over several weeks Aroon introduced the Triform young people to the deeply fascinating practice of making Mandalas. Mandalas have been used for thousands of years in many ancient cultures as a tool for focusing attention and to find deeper connection with the spiritual world. “We started with simple exercises, drawing a circle within a circle, the outer circle depicts a repetitive physical trait and the inner circle repeats the soul quality”. For example a student wanted to express a cat in a Mandala, so the question for the outer circle is what makes a cat, a cat? She chose the claw. The next question was what does a cat

Making Mandalas

Marcia Cary started this September in the Development department in the office helping coordinate the events and fundraising efforts. She came to Triform from doing similar work in a local conservation organization. For her, the sense of community here in Triform is tangible and that was her strongest first impression. “Do good work” is her

personal motto and she says she sees that in Camphill. Nature and being part of an organization that practices ethical land stewardship is also important to her and also stems from her academic background in Biology. Welcome Marcia!

Charlie Doheny also started this fall working mainly on the Estate with the lively crew of students and apprentices. He came from a long career as an educator working at Hawthorne Valley Farm in the visiting students program. He specialized in working in the woods and creating projects in nature adapted

New Employees build capacityfor different age ranges from 10 -17 years old. He says the outdoor work enriches everyone’s health and through getting to know the individuals in Triform his understanding of the world around him is deepened. He says he really enjoys bring here and Triform is grateful for his expertise, welcome Charlie!

Barbara Henry comes to Triform’s administration with over thirty years of experience with people with developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injury in residential, day, vocational and clinic settings. She has an academic background a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social work and will be helping Triform with the regulatory requirements for OPWDD. Although most of her experience has been in traditional settings she has long been intrigued by the Camphill model. She says “I recognize the value of people with disabilities taking part in real work and making true contributions to their community. Triform is the place where this can happen”. Well said Barbara, welcome and thank you for all for joining us!

have that appeals to you? “Her tongue” she said so the inner circle contains petal like cat tongues.” One student, Cheney Ravitz, was struck by the fact that Mandalas are all around us and by careful observation of nature that you can admire nature’s artistry. In the next stage, they went out into nature to look at leaves, flowers, fruits, and weeds. Here they found numbers, making Mandalas with one, two (duality), three, four and so on. The group also made Rangloli (a Hindu tradition in India) using sidewalk chalk in front of the Falcon Hall. In the final week, the students made collaborative manda-las on the floor and the chalkboard, dividing the circle into pies with each individual reflecting the one opposite. The highlight of the exploration came with an outing to a Tibetan monastery in Kingston where as Cheney expressed, “It wasn’t so much what they did (making the Mandalas in sand) it was how they did it that was so awesome.”

I first came to Triform as an AmeriCorps volunteer in 2008, nineteen years old, fresh out of my first year of university and looking for meaningful work to fill a gap year. As is the nature of idealistic young adults, I thought I knew everything—this notion was quickly challenged by my work here, and [most days] I welcomed the challenge. I lived first in Tourmaline House with Keith and Teresa, then in Anatos with Meg and Martin, and met in the young people I worked with some of my greatest teachers to date. I stayed for a bit less than a year, and was so devastated to leave that I cried for three days before the big event. I returned to university on the other side of the country and couldn’t stop thinking about Triform. When I had the opportunity to go to a conference in New York City that fall, I naturally decided it was a good idea to skip a few days of school beforehand in order to visit Triform. It was a wonderful visit full of familiar faces that were happy to see me, but felt altogether too short. On that visit, I began to toy with the idea of returning to Triform, but I wasn’t sure how I’d be able to manage it, with two and a half years of university still left in front of me. I got lucky the following summer when Triform needed some extra help that coincided with my vacation time. I spent three blissful weeks milking cows, taking walks with my housemates, gardening, getting sunburned, reconnecting with long-term coworkers, finding creative new things to cook, and generally enjoying all that Triform had to offer. It was a perfect summer, and I cried again when I had to leave. I knew at the end of the three weeks that I would return the following summer, there was no other option—I couldn’t stay away.

I feel a profound connection to the youth guidance work that is being done in the community and to many of the young people and long-term coworkers. The work at Triform is critical for the lives of all of its residents, and somehow such a part of my heart that I feel strongly I must be a part of it. The joy I feel is overwhelming when I am working in home economics or the weavery or the farm with someone and I see that they have learned a new skill, or when one of the young people I’m living with freely offers me a smile, hug, or their help with a meal, or when I connect on a deeper level with a long-term coworker. The connections I have built are what keep me returning to Triform summer after summer. Though those connections are strong with many, some are particularly special to me. I have had the privilege of living with Sarah Stein each summer since her first year in Triform. Over time we have become great friends, and I have been able to help her develop new skills and see her

grow and mature. Getting to spend time with Sarah is one of the primary reasons I keep coming back each year. Another strong connection, one I have felt since shortly after arriving at Triform for the first time, is with Pierre Wilson. I lived with Pierre during my first few months in the community and came to understand very quickly what a special person he is. My life is turning down a new path, and I may not be able to return to Triform for such extended amounts of time in the future, but it is comforting to know that my second home, a place full of people I deeply care for, will be there for visits both long and short. Triform, in its life span, is on the brink of mid-life, almost 35 years old. In recent years Triform has developed and expanded in many ways: construction of three new residential houses, the purchase of land previously slated for a large housing development; construction of a walking path joining the new property with the old; construction of a hoop barn following the collapse of the old barn; and also the construction of a large all-weather greenhouse. But there is still more to be done. This past year brought a focus on how to maintain this infrastructure going forward and how to be best set for the future development of the community. A major development included the installation of a solar array with enough power to supply the entire community as well as the capacity to give back to the grid. This was made possible by the generosity of two donors and a loan from Triform Foundation. In the coming year the following large projects will be considered within the scope of the five year Master Plan: improvements to the farm buildings, with a view to enhancing the therapeutic and production elements, the replacement of Rowan house, a modular home over twenty years old; and retired co-worker housing. It is an important value that our land and buildings reflect our commitment to a place where attention is paid to the smallest detail and that harmonious therapeutic living requires a beautifully maintained environment to flourish.
