Grace Graziano, of Sodus, decided to attend Alfred State because she loved the little-town feel of Alfred, as well as the small class sizes and wide variety of two-year majors. Unsure of whether she wanted to enter the health field or become an event coordinator, Graziano decided to major in liberal arts and sciences: math and sciences.

“I was really considering going into the health field, maybe nutrition or something along those lines, but since I wasn’t sure, I thought the liberal arts program was the perfect stepping stone to that and it gave me a little time to think about it.”

A student ambassador and a member of the Alfred Programming Board and the Drama Club, Graziano said she loves how easy it is to get involved on campus. She encourages future students to step outside of their comfort zones, take risks, challenge themselves, and be open-minded.

“Those are the things that are going to help you succeed and go far.”

Orvis the Pioneer, the college’s mascot, is the biggest supporter of Alfred State. Standing at over 6’6”, Orvis is named after former college president Paul Orvis and was introduced during Homecoming 2012. Orvis’ favorite things include sitting by the campfire and eating hot dogs and s’mores. He also enjoys climbing the hills of campus to check out the amazing scenery, especially during the fall. He loves getting his picture taken and giving high fours to kids of all ages.

Meet Orvis! Jump in and be a part of things!A lot of your education happens outside the classroom.

That’s why Alfred State has about 100 clubs and

organizations to choose from. From drama to intramural

sports to equestrian, your interests can take you places

with employers, as well. They look for well-rounded

students who jump in and get involved. Explore what’s

right for you: www.alfredstate.edu > Student Life.

facilities for exercise or a quick game of

pick-up. Whether you want to compete

or just stay in shape, Alfred State has

something for all Pioneers.

Going Pro. Moments after the 2015 NFL Draft ended,

alumnus Rasheed Williams, ’14, of

Swedesboro, NJ, signed an undrafted free

agent contract with the Detroit Lions. Williams

joins elite Alfred State company with his

shot in the NFL. Rod Streater, ’10, will begin

his fourth season with the Oakland Raiders,

while LeRoy Collins, Jr., ’98, and Lyonel

Anderson, ’02, spent time in NFL camps and

on practice squads.

Engaged students are

READY to take on the world.

For instance, Ashley Ebel, a Business

Administration student, was named a 2015

recipient of the Newman Civic Fellows Award

from Campus Compact. Shocked by the high

level of infant mortality in Honduras, Ashley

teamed up with nonprofit Little Angels of

Honduras to raise money, build awareness,

travel with a team to Honduras, and start a new

student organization- Hope for Honduras.

Student organizations are active in civic

engagement. Since 2011, student groups have

supported and organized a Relay for Life event

raising a record-breaking $23,000.

Also, a Special Olympics Track & Field

Spectacular is held on campus each spring

- a track and field event providing a positive

competition for middle and high school students

with intellectual disabilities. Over 75 student

volunteers helped make this day a success and

the event continues to grow each year.

Get involved.Make a difference. Civic engagement involves using your time,

skills, and abilities, to contribute to your

community. This can involve volunteering

at an after school program, advocating

for change, raising money for a charitable

cause, and voting in elections. It provides

a pathway to channel your passion into

action, bring learning to life, and build

relationships that can make a difference.
