Lucie Eddie Campbell-Williams – God’s Humble Composer, Educator, and Evangelist

Have you ever heard of classic African American hymns that your grandmother may have sung like "Something Within," "Touch Me Lord Jesus" and, "He'll Understand And Say Well Done" (1933)? Well, those classics that you hear almost every Sunday in some Black church were written by none other than one of Rust College’s most notable alumni, Lucie Campbell. In fact, it was in 1919 that Campbell published her first song, "Something Within", which was followed by more than one hun-dred others, including "The Lord is My Shepherd", "Heavenly Sunshine", "The King's Highway", and "He Understands". In brief, Lucie Eddie Campbell was an American composer and singer of hymns, as well as an edu-cator and advocate for social justice. She was the youngest of nine children, and born April 30, 1885

to Burrell and Isabella (Wilkerson) Campbell in Duck Hill, Mississippi. Her father, Burrell Campbell worked for the Mississippi Cen-tral Railroad (later the Illinois Central Railroad), and her mother, Isabella worked as a cook. Unfortunately, shortly after her birth, her father was killed in a train accident. Being the sole provider for and caretaker of her nine children, Isa-bella moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Lucie attended public school in Memphis and in 1899 she was graduated from Kortrecht High School (later Booker T. Washington) as valedictorian of her class and was awarded the highest prize for her Latin proficiency. Also, at age nineteen, Lucie organized a group of Beale Street musicians into the Music Club. Other members later were added to form a thousand-voice choir that performed at the Na-tional Baptist Convention. At the organizational meeting of the National Sunday and Baptist Training Union Congress held in Memphis in 1915, "Miss Lucie" was elected as Music Director. She penned songs for the Congress and wrote musical pageants exhorting the young to give their lives to Christian service. In addition to writing religious music for the Congress. She also wrote the Congress' study lessons, as well as other instructional materials. Even though a member of the famous Mount Nebo Baptist Church with Dr. Roy Love, Lucie could be found singing and preaching at revival meetings in local Baptist churches throughout the Black Memphis and Shelby County community. After completing high school, Lucie passed the teachers' exam and began her teaching career at Carnes Avenue Grammar School in 1911; however, the following year, she was transferred to Kortrecht High School (the same school that she graduated) and taught American history and English. Later, she earned the baccalaureate degree from historic Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, where the “Mother of Civil Rights and Social Justice in America,” Ida B. Wells, had attended earlier. Later, Lucie earned the master's degree from Tennes-see Agricultural and Industrial State College (today’s Tennessee State University) in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1919, while still teaching at Kortrecht High School, Lucie published her first song, "Something Within", which was followed by more than one hundred others, including "The Lord is My Shepherd", "Heavenly Sunshine", "The King's Highway", "Touch Me Lord Jesus", "He Understands" and "He'll Say Well Done", written in 1933. Campbell also introduced promising young musicians such as Marian Anderson and J. Robert Bradley to the world. "Miss Lucie" intro-duced Anderson to the National Baptist Convention and served as her accompanist. In 1955, Campbell's loyalty and dedication to the Baptist Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Congress was recognized when she was named as one of the principal lecturers dur-ing the 50th Anniversary Session held in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Campbell was an activist for civil rights and social justice. Much in the vein of Ida B. Wells, she too defied the Jim Crow streetcar laws when she refused to relinquish her seat in the section reserved for whites, and as president of the Negro Education Association, she struggled with governmental officials to redress the inequities in the pay scale and other benefits for Negro teachers. Prior to her death on January 3, 1963, in Nashville, Lucie married her lifelong companion, Reverend C. R. Williams, and expressed her love and respect for her friend, business partner, and companion, now her husband, by penning the song, "They That Wait Upon the Lord.”

OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS

Dr. Donald Cole, who retired in 2019 after more than 50 years at the University of Mississippi as a student, educator and administrator, has been hon-ored by having his name added to the university’s Student Services Center. The University of Missis-sippi recognizes Dr. Cole for being a tenacious ad-vocate for diversity and opportunity for all students. In addition to his roles as program director, grant writer, mentor and mathematics professor, Dr. Cole also served as a university administrator. We congratulate Dr. Cole for his years of service at the University of Mississippi and Rust College feels honored to have him on board as a Professor of Mathematics in the Division of Science and Mathe-matics. A celebration will be planned later to mark the re-naming of the building as the Martindale-Cole Stu-

dent Services Center. Larry Martindale, a former Ole Miss basketball player and longtime university supporter, asked for the change to reflect the university’s progress in diversity and opportunity for all students.

Rust College COVID-19

Task-Force Update Reminders

The Rust College COVID-19 Task Force is committed to the high-est standard of safety and protection for our institution's students, staff, and faculty. The task force relies on collaborative efforts from multiple departments across campus to ensure we recognize the lat-est standards of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Mississippi State Health Office, and the policies developed by our task force.

Since Rust College opened its door for hybrid learning for Fall 2020, no student has tested positive for COVID-19. We attribute this to the entire Rust College family's diligence of wearing their mask, observing social dis-tancing standards, and adhering to the Rust Colleges policies. Rust College has ordered over 7,000 COVID-19 Rapid Result Tests. When students, staff, and faculty return for the third module, Rust College plans to conduct mass testing to ensure we continue to remain safe during this difficult time. Until then, we want to remind employees, students, and visitors that they can reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 by taking the same steps to prevent infection from the flu and the common cold. Maintain physical distance of at least 6 feet from others; Wear face coverings as appropriate; Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If water is not available, use hand sanitizer

with at least 60% alcohol; Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands; Avoid contact with people who are sick; Stay home while sick and avoid close contact with others; Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and immediately dis-

pose of the used tissue; Utilize secondary handwashing or sanitizing stations that are set up with either hand sanitizer or wipes/

towelettes; and Avoid handshaking to reduce the spread of germs.
