page 1 Campus reception welcomes new administrators to Hartnell At a “Hello, Goodbye” reception on the morning of Jan. 27, a lively crowd of employees joined with me and Governing Board members to greet two new administrators to our college family and thank two other individuals. We welcomed Daniel Scott (pictured), who started as director of public safety/emergency management on Jan. 21, and Linda Wilczewski (will-CHESS-ski), who started on Jan. 27 as vice president of administrative services. Scott, who comes to us from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, said he looks forward to working with the entire college community to ensure the safety of all. Wilczewski (pictured), who previously worked in the San Jose/Evergreen College District, said that after earlier work in the private sector, higher education is her second career. “After I adopted my children, I wanted to come back into the workforce, and I wanted to find something meaningful to do,” she said. “When I examined my priorities and my passions, I felt that education was the place where I really wanted to focus my energy.” Joined by Board of Trustees President Aurelio Salazar Jr., Vice President Pat Donohue and trustees Candi DePauw and Manuel Osorio, I also thanked Rick Bennett for assisting Hartnell over the past four months as interim vice president of administrative services, as well as Al Munõz, who returned from retirement in that job to serve as interim last spring and summer. Bennett, who recently retired from the Santa Clara West Valley district, expressed his appreciation for Hartnell’s strong community partnerships. “When you come from a suburban type of college, to get industry to talk to you can be laborious, and here they’re opening their arms to you,” he said. Three students are semifinalists for prestigious Cooke scholarship We have received the exciting news that three of our current students are semifinalists for the highly selective Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship for high-achieving community college students. Hartnell’s 2020 candidates are Estefania Villicana, a graduate of North Salinas High School majoring in psychology and sociology; Kenya Burton, a graduate of Everett Alvarez High School majoring in communications; and Jenel Fraij, also a graduate of Everett Alvarez and majoring in applied mathematics. This year’s 456 semifinalists were chosen from a pool of nearly 1,500 applicants attending 311 community colleges in 45 states and the District of Columbia. California students count for 102 of the semifinalists. The recipients, announced in April, will receive financial support for up to three years, comprehensive advising and the chance to connect with fellow Cooke scholars. Last year, Hartnell had two semifinalists, and one of them, Mariluz Tejeda Leon, was selected. She is now a highly active junior at Yale University.

Coronavirus information will be shared as situation develops As has been widely reported in the media, a potentially deadly illness of the type known as a coronavirus has developed in China and spread on a limited basis to other countries, including the United States.

There have been two confirmed cases in Southern California, but none on the Central Coast. The U.S. government has issued an advisory against travel to China. Because the safety and health of Hartnell students and employees is always the top concern for our college, we will continue to monitor this situation and share information about the coronavirus as it affects our community.

Steps to minimize the risk of contracting the coronavirus are the same as those recommended to prevent the spread of all respiratory illnesses – and for general good health:

• Try to get sufficient sleep, exercise regularly, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious foods.

• Keep your hands clean and wash them frequently with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when you cannot wash your hands.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• Do not share cups, straws or anything else you put in your mouth. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Get a flu shot – it’s not too late – available at most pharmacies • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or sleeve. When you use a tissue, immediately put it in

the trash.

Please share any questions with Daniel Scott, director of public safety and emergency management, at (831) 770-7013 or by email to [email protected].

Progress on multiple fronts for Measure T construction Construction on projects funded by Measure T bonds continues to progress on our Main Campus in Salinas, as well as at the King City Education Center and the new Soledad Education Center. With recent good weather, Avila Construction has kept pouring cement for the new quad landscaping with the aim of restoring pedestrian travel to a near-normal condition as soon as possible. Also on the Main Campus, work in Building D is progressing, with installation of doors and drywall and preparation for wiring. On the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System Center for Nursing & Health Sciences, testing has been underway for auguring of building piles, as well as trenching for utilities. Grading is complete for both the King City expansion and the Soledad Center, and utility trenching has begun. One immediate note for the college community: A two-hour power shutdown in Building E after 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 31 will also affect internet servers and phones on all Hartnell campuses.

North County chamber presents community award to college At the North County Rec Center in Castroville, blocks from the future site of Hartnell’s new North Monterey County Education Center, Trustee Manuel Osorio and I were honored on Jan. 25 to accept the 2019 Community Recognition Award from the North Monterey County Chamber of Commerce. The occasion was the rec center’s annual Crab & Shrimp Boil, where the chamber also inducted its new board members. I invited everyone in the crowd at the entertaining fundraiser to join with Hartnell

Welcome Back Lunch culminates ASHC Week of Welcome events A Welcome Back Lunch & Club Rush on Jan. 29 in the Student Center concluded more than a week of activities organized by the Associated Students of Hartnell College, helping new and returning students get settled for the Spring 2020 semester.

Beginning on Jan. 21 with orientation support and instruction on using the HC GO app for student information, the events also included a Resource Fair on Jan. 22-23 and a Panther Swag Day & Club Rush on Jan. 24. The Jan. 29 lunch, accompanied by tabling by campus clubs (pictured), served 350 people on the Main Campus and 100 at the Alisal Campus. It will also be held at the King City Education Center during the week of Feb. 3. A chili verde meal was prepared by Dining Services

and funded through a Hunger-Free Campus grant.

Interest group seeks discussion on respect for diverse gender identity

The Hartnell College LGBTQIA+ Allies Interest Group is inviting members of the college community to meet at noon on Feb. 6 in Steinbeck Hall in the Student Center on the Main Campus to discuss how to foster inclusivity and support for LGBTQIA+ students and others at Hartnell. The group will present existing recommendations and share best practices from other community colleges across the state. Attendees will also be asked to participate in an activity to help determine which, if any, of the recommendations presented are feasible at Hartnell and also discuss shared priorities moving forward.

Everyone is welcome. RSVP optional/appreciated: http://bit.ly/ally220hc

ACCCA scholarship raffle nearing Feb. 13 deadline Michelle Peters, director of Department of Supportive Programs & Services at Hartnell, reminds all of us that a Feb. 13 entry deadline for the 2020 Student Scholarship Raffle organized by the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA) is fast approaching. Since 2002, ACCCA has raised more than $48,000 in scholarship money that directly benefited community college students in California. Peters is selling individual raffle tickets at the following prices: one for $5, three for $10 and seven for $20. “I hope you will join me in entering this raffle for the chance to bring home $500 in student scholarship money for Hartnell College!” she said. Tickets will also be sold at the ACCCA 45th annual conference in Riverside on Feb. 26-28. Winners will be notified in early March. Contact Peters at [email protected] or (831) 770-7012.

Seminar to explore background and objectives of the Blue Zones Project Hartnell’s School of Nursing & Allied Health will host a Feb. 25 Interprofessional Educational Seminar on the Blue Zones Project, a nationwide movement to promote healthy choices by shaping surroundings for the better. The greater Salinas area is the first community in Northern California to join the project. During the free, public program from 1-3 p.m. at the Mainstage Theater (Building K), Blue Zone representatives will present on “What is Blue Zone,” its history, why Monterey County was chosen and how individuals can play a role.

Before the Jan. 28 game, the teams observed a moment of silence in honor of longtime Orange Coast College Head Coach John Altobelli and eight others who were killed Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash, including Los Angeles Lakers basketball legend Kobe Bryant. “Our condolences go out to all of the families as we join the baseball community in mourning of him and their families,” Hartnell Baseball said in a statement. The team will play eight of its next 10 games at home, beginning Feb. 1 against Diablo Valley, starting at noon at the Tony Teresa Diamond.
